Jon is one of my favorites new actors. From Walking Dead to Wolf Of Wall Street. His performances are raw and captivating. So glad he finally got on JRE.
There was one point where every second movie I watched had Jon Bernthal in it, and I was very okay with that, unlike Tom Hanks.

This is so true. When I think about my life and the things I did in my life, and how pathetic of a person I was when I was younger, its actually a miracle that I came out of it even relatively unscathed. For so long thinking I was cool selling coke 100 miles an hour doing drugs, partying, getting into fights with other crews and people... All it would have taken was for me to get busted back then for my life to have potentially gone down a road that it would have been nearly impossible to come back from. Instead, I ended up with an assault causing bodily harm charge and 6 months house arrest... and thankfully I was able to climb out of that life and realize there was no future where I was going.... I look at how many of my friends died from overdose and I think about the drugs I have done and the states I have been in. I could have been just another statistic.
Instead, I am now at the absolute pinnacle of my field as a computer storage architect. I travel all over the world and am the lead architect at one of the fastest growing compute and storage companies in the world. I was able to go back to university, get my computer science degree and begin absolutely thriving and blazing a trail because it is something that I truly love. It is astounding at how good you can be at something, and how far and how fast you can go when it is your passion.
For anyone that might be struggling, in a terrible position where it looks like there might be no way out, I promise you there is a path. I'm not going to sugarcoat it and say everyone will be able to do it, because it's just not true... but you owe it to yourself to try.

Idk. I guess it depends what part of what you think is so true. Everyone i know who had parents that had them in there 40s or when they were older and well off, most of those kids cant relate to there parents, and there parents are essentially grandparent age by the time there like 20, by the time they have kids they might not even be alive. Everyone i know whose closest with there parents, those kids parents had them when they were young. I live in new york and ive seen it quite a bit. Kids are naive, they might assume joe's hard working is what every dad is like. They might not realize how unique and probably dont honestly, realize how unique of a position joe has. Most guys his age arent like hitting there peak in income, rogan started blowing up when he started making youtube videos. Most guys his age are like, getting ready or are already retired lol. Yeah what hes saying is true but, hes like the .00000001% in certain ways with how he did that

"Having a healthy relationship with violence, having an understanding of it..." probably one of the most important points in this segment, and a desperately needed teaching point for an increasingly agitated and fractured American culture. Such a mind state is not an advocacy for, or acceptance of, psychopathic behavior, but neither is it a denial of human nature; it is an evolutionarily necessary function when understood in context and used properly. For us to be here watching this, for those two men to have had their discussion--violence has driven us forward as a species just as much as peace, making our world possible; it is not an act or series of actions to be taken lightly, and should only be used with the utmost respect for what it has done, can-and-will do. Those who over-identify with one extreme socio-political view or another (some war-mongering MAGAt, or bleeding-heart leftie) fail to understand this completely.
The lefties and the Maga’s are one in the same…
It’s important to remember that violence is apart of human nature ( whether we admit it or not). But don’t let it control you, control that part of you. It’s better to be a warrior in a garden instead of a Gardner in a war.

Seeing this side of Jon, makes me appreciate his ability as an actor. Some of the rolls I've seen him in, couldn't be any further from the man before me now. Lol. It's really quite incredible!
Acting is really hard. But at the same time, I can't trust anyone who's good at it. Jon was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Dude is a rich as they come. Yet he's been able to craft this "working man" persona. Hollywood is incredible. When he talks about inequality here, he's talking about the opportunities and second chances he had, that others don't.

Now that you all mention it, that does seem to be a theme for his parenting. How to challenge his children to overcome privilege. I didn't know he was so well off all his life. He definitely has that "working man" could care less persona down in his characters.
I’ll admit it, my biggest failure is self discipline. I’m thirty one and I’ve been an iron worker for 10 years. Single, no children, no responsibility outside of my career. So what do I do? Drink, party, hunt and do nothing for my future. Working on it daily, yet I admit I fail often.

I think it’s easy to talk about things while sounding intelligent but people need resources. The orphans, people who had abusive upbringings. The problem with our society is the fact that there isn’t free solutions. Everything costs money. People, especially men can spiral so far down into negativity and there’s help but it doesn’t usually change minds unless we can connect with people and not feel ashamed or alienated. Personally I’m fearless but I beat myself so much for how I act or what I say. I try to be mindful yet sometimes it’s hard af to break out of a downward spiral. Thanks for reading if you do. Love
I grew up in a violent gang and drug type neighborhood. For me combat sports 100% kept me from going a bad route like some of the other neighborhood kids who got killed or ended up in jail. Serious work and discipline needed and taught, lack of ego, strong male role models. Did it cost money? Sure, but go into any boxing or MMA gym and tell them you're poor but really want to train and they'll work something out with you. Obviously you can't solve every kid's problem this way and also obvious that there are other resources out there.

Go ask to poor countries, how 95% of jobs that USA has doesnt even exist since no one needs them like "Solid Food Terapeut for kids". Everything he said about the differences and the major one sidedness of what we as a country put our funds into and support is something ill totally agree with. As someone who has mostly always been the provider in my relationships ( as a women), and also having been with abusive men, both physically and verbally, ill tell you that having some kind of outlet definitely is something that is needed. Especially when it comes to building back up your self esteem and self worth after the fact. Friends and close community groups, or even therapy has always been something that has made dealing with the trauma a little less painful, plus being around other people that have been through similar situations makes you not feel so lonely -isolated.

I wrestled for 12 years. My household was loving but it wasn’t ideal. I didn’t live with mom and dad. I lived with whoever needed the check that month, if that makes sense. I got in trouble. But that discipline you (L)earn from an individual sport is something you either comprehend or you don’t. When you can shake the hand of the: people, place, or thing, that beatt you? Means you have it. But there comes a flaw. Not having fear is more detrimental than anything.
I have been saying this for years. I came from a tough area and develpoed drug addictions spent half my life in jail. And now when i look back they do nothing for these types of areas. All that needs done is education from a young age about the situation that they are in and give them statistics of where there life is going to lead if they follow a certain path.
Problem is a lot of young people don’t listen, you tell them that gang violence and drugs etc etc is not the way and there like “yeah ok what about my favourite rapper”. Add together that and playing GTA for years then being put out in the world.
When I was younger at high school ( uk) we had someone come to the school to talk to us about drugs. We made a mockery and laughed and joked at what he was saying. He was pounding his fists on the floor telling stories if people he knew who had gone down bad paths from drugs and all we did was joke and say yeah never me etc etc, I now feel so bad for acting that way but life lessons are the best kind ( not encouraging any young people to try bad things but sadly most people only learn the hard way)

Kanye has talked recently about certain images and sounds being heavily promoted in those areas, and it fits in line with what Derek wrote. Not only are they not investing in those areas, what they promote within those communities leads to the very outcome that those communities are known for, and they establish cultural trends based around mocking good behaviour.
@@billywashere6965 yes too true, the uk is a lot different from the USA as we don’t have as easy access to weapons but it’s getting worse here for sure. We really need a cultural change world wide though I just don’t see what triggers it at this point. The fact we can have these conversations and they seem to come up more and more is likely a positive step towards change.

The biggest problem is that these conversations never happen in town squares because elected civil servants will get hit with "isms" and "ists" by the usual suspects. And on platforms like this, it's impossible to talk about the issues and solutions because half the terms are prohibited from being used.
I grew up in a loving supporting family, but when i got to junior high, i was exposed to wanna-be gangsters, typical bullies, racists and assholes. Definitely a harsh time, but it forced me to learn to push back when needed.
I love listening to Jon just whispering “that’s right” every few seconds whenever anyone else is talking. I know he’s actually listening to the person talking to him but it’s still funny once you notice it.
There is such a thing as to much struggle. Overcoming, is over achieving.

As a man at the age of 33 I'm just realizing so many things. I have made it through more shit than most and feel Im a good man because of it. Kinda like they said on the podcast, I was one who was forged as a good one thankfully. But the shit ive seen and gone through I'd wish on no one. But i finally realize that's what makes me strong not weak.. it's what we've gone through that defines who we are. So overcoming obstacles constantly is who I am now. I just wish I had more guidance, now and when I was younger.
My first major career move was without credentials, but the man looked at me after the interview and asked, "Did you play sports at a high level as a youth"? I just smiled back. Discipline was bred into me young, many kids fell off in sports with participation ribbon attitude, which was one way of looking at it. I was taught you earn your spot on the line-up/team. Hockey training was intense, small town Canadian hockey involved carrying your bag halfway across town in minus 15-30 celsius, but the love of the game made the harhness sweet.
Y’know, you don’t have the proper education or any of the skills required to be a surgeon. However, I can’t shake this feeling that you dominated a bunch of suburban kids at youth sports. Fuck it, you carved up the ice in hockey!! How much harder could a human be, YOUR HIRED.

Joe Rogan is a hell of a lot wiser than people give him credit for. His take on the value proposition of teaching children the importance of discipline at a young age cannot be overstated.
Overcoming adversity in a consistent way is an ability that comes with hard work, persistence, and practice.
What Joe gets wrong: He’s going based on the assumption the throwing more money at poor neighborhoods will automatically equate to them being more prosperous

His point about “having a healthy relationship relationship with violence” is literally taken right out of Jordan Peterson’s book. “Men should be monsters but have the discipline to control those tendencies. It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a Gardner in a war. How else would one be able to protect his loved ones when it comes down to it?”
I agree with it but I hope you’re not suggesting Jon got that from Jordan. I think you’ll find Jon got that from life experience and perhaps even reading some of the great philosophers.

I think the initial statement that Joe makes about his children seeing him at his most disciplined stage of life is HUGE. I’m lucky to have grown up with my parents who mainly had their shit together. But I’ve seen friends and now that I’m older more people my age, having children in times when they aren’t at their best. I think that makes such a big difference. I know it’s not realistic for 100% of couples, but when he said that it really made me pause and think about it

So many good points crammed into this bit but my favourite was when Joe says that some people succumb to adversity. That's profoundly true, but it's not "some people." Sooner or later the majority does, and it's being broadcast to us every day.
What do you expect when we do not give guidance to everyone on how to handle adversity? Sure the athletes or artists learn how to deal with strife, in their wins and losses, but what about the average kid who has no talent, no interests, and just mindlessly drifts through life playing video games and doing the bare minimum in everything? Those people are the majority, and they get no education in even dealing with the world socially.
The majority aren't the ones doing nothing, but I liked many of your points nonetheless.
Through God's grace I made it through Iraq, losing my Brother, almost losing my left leg, breaking and having my right hip replaced, ended up homeless and ended up in Kensington. I turned it around I had to learn the hard way the best thing that could happen in the future is if I can help someone else. I had to accept responsibility for where I was in life. Anyone can change it requires temporary pain the births growth and permanent peace of mind.

I've only seen Bernthal in Sicario and I thought he made a huge impression for such a small role. These interviews with him sincerely make me feel like I need to watch all of his work he seems like a very interesting human being

Much of what is characterized as "toxic masculinity", by modern feminists, are traits like aggression, competiveness, the subduing of emotions to get a goal accomplished. When put under the proper constraints, these things are not "toxic". Rather, these traits are the very bedrock upon which innovations and civilization grew. Its these very traits that led to the very comfortable world that allowed women to thrive.
But that's the cue. If these urges are put on a leash... If not... They are what toxic masculinity is. Subduing emotions continuously to get anything done causes repression and pent up anger and resentment... Really bad for ur mental health and it's scientifically proven. Any feminist would suggest think of a better approach... Which is letting that current of emotion flow and when the mind is clear... Then take the next step. It also helps us harness our emotions better. Subduing emotions only makes us their slaves in the long run.
Most of our lives now we don't have use for agression... We can still harness it but if we don't put it on a leash... It will destroy us and make us an angry and abusive asshole.
Competitiveness is good... But flowing in it without thinking about stepping back or searching for an alternative... Is again perfect recipe for disaster. Proven time and time again.
Society thrived when these traits are used properly rather than letting them be uncontrollable. And trust me... Most men don't have control over these basic traits.
So yes. Toxic masculinity is real... And it harms us men as much as it harms those around us.

I was born and raised in the projects in NYC. I HAVE 20 years law enforcement experience. I was able to do the right thing in the midst of living in a crime ridden neighborhood. There’s NO EXCUSE.

As an Appalachian Ohioan who made it out, I can attest to how growing up there really limits your possibilities. What you see is all there is. You never leave your hometown. Most everyone is poor (by American standards). There’s nothing to inspire or drive you.
You can’t even see your own limits because they’ve been there your whole life. You inherit them, and you hand them on in an ugly cycle of limited possibilities.
Outsiders sometimes want to help, but Appalachians are suspicious. Why not? We’re exploited for our valuable resources (coal/oil) and watch them looted by big companies who laugh all the way to the bank… poisoning our people on the way.
People back home don’t need handouts. They need hands-up. They need INVESTMENT. They work exceptionally hard, but the jobs are low paying. They ARE disciplined, but they aren’t exposed to ideas that give them the ability dream up a better way.
It’s not all bad. You want to talk about people with love and integrity? Talk to us country folks. You want your kids to grow up with kindness, empathy, and understanding of grit? Send them to live with a Southeastern Ohio family for the summer. Then send them again. And again!
It’s not quite like when I was growing up, but everyone needs to experience the hardship and happiness of low income living, in a slow, sleepy small town. Everyone needs to experience the good and bad of “if-y”cell phone signal and sometimes non-existent Internet service. Everyone needs to experience the isolation and QUIET of the country. Everyone needs to see the “ripple-ly” farmlands and rolling green hills scattered with horses and cows. Everyone needs the belonging and love of a small community. Even adults need it. (So go visit and see what it’s like for yourself.)
My parents did an amazing job raising me. And luckily, I was a reader, so long before I ever saw a different part of the country, I’d already traveled the world! That’s why I made it out. But I’m soooo glad I grew up where I did, it made me the good human being that I am!

The most important thing a person needs to succeed in this life is accountability for your own decisions and a desire to do better. Saying they don’t know any better is a cop out to me. Now, don’t get me wrong, some kids have to hit the streets to take care of their families, but most of them idolize gang culture and want the easiest way to make a lot of money

The only thing I think of when I think of Toxic Masculinity is guys who think being an asshole, and acting like a teenage bully is what represents masculinity.
I think both sides misuse the term.
Many on the left think being a classic man is toxic. Many on the right think that a classical man is being some kind of over the top tough guy who’s an asshole to those he perceives to be below him, or who don’t threaten him.
It’s been so difficult to shift into a disciplined person throughout the years. I will not raise my children the same way.

I think they need to look up what toxic masculity is. It is the notion that emotions or being vulenerable is weak or something to be made fun of. Being uncomfortable sharing anything deeper than sports or hugging each other or saying i love you without the bro. The egging on or calling someone a pussy for not jumping off a cliff or whatever
The problem comes from the fact that it's too broad a term for something too complex, that being psychology. By using that term, you are assuming that people who have those traits are without emotional depth themselves. Granted, there are people out there I'd be willing to say are basically just walking sea sponges, but other people simply may not experience emotion the same way as us. Slapping a loaded label onto human interaction creates division and sides.
Not to mention that it always seems to encompass the types of people you'd really only be meeting if you were an unpopular high school kid, trying to join a frat, working on a crappy construction crew or going to shitty young people parties. When I meet people who would probably qualify as having a lot of "toxic masculinity," I just don't have them in my life. It just seems like the kind of phrase that is used when someone has some personal baggage they haven't resolved within themselves.

Toxic masculinity is belittling others to show off masculine traits. What ppl don’t understand is those actions are traditionally masculine in nature however show a vast amount of insecurity which isn’t masculine. In reality, if someone shows off using toxic behavior against a strong advisory they crumble. People highly respect a person that doesn’t downgrade or trash others to show their own importance or value. Respect/integrity is the highest form of being perceived as masculine, you never question the masculinity of a person you respect

Toxic behavior is done in an way that is designed to make others feel belittled. I think the defined definition is a behavior done that is harmful or unpleasant l in an insidious manner. People can be toxic, however masculinity is traits people want to see in men. I very much doubt youd want young boys to be taught behave in a insidious manner. Being affronted of the idea that masculinity can not be corrupted by some isnt well thought. Toxic men beat their spouses and significant others.
