  • TOKYO. Just that one word is enough to excite anyone who loves to eat. In this Tokyo series we’re taking you along to LOCAL SPOTS where the food is amazing and which you won’t see in other RUclips videos. In this video we eat Japan’s most beloved fast food- oden, drink a sake cocktail for breakfast and eat unagi- freshwater eel, a Japanese obsession. Make sure you’re subscribed to our channel goo.gl/9rfeRS so you don’t miss out on heaps more food videos!

    One of Japan's most beloved fast foods, oden, a bubbling hot pot of vegetables, tofu and fishcakes can be found everywhere from the most exclusive of restaurants to the ubiquitous konbini (convenience stores). Our first stop is Maruken Suisan a family run oden eatery where the fishcakes are all made in house and where diners lean on communal tables snacking on dashi drenched daikon and fluffy fishcakes whilst sipping on sake.
    Order a cup of sake and drink three quarters of it before asking for dashiwari where the staff will top up the rest of your sake cup with oden broth and a sprinkle of shichimi (Japanese spice mix). Savoury, spicy and a warming burn from the sake- it makes for a unique end to your oden feast.
    Our next stop is to a local unagi restaurant for a lunch of mouthwatering freshwater eel. Eel is a Japanese obsession and unagi is famous not only for its buttery flesh and beautiful flavour but the belief that it is stamina inducing. We eat a simple unagi-don (eel on rice) set lunch with soup and pickles. It’s perfection!
    Where we ate:
    Oden at Maruken Suisan, Japan, 〒115-0045 Tokyo, Kita, 赤羽1丁目22−8. Open 10:00am to 9:00pm. Closed 3rd Wednesday of each month.
    Unagi at Manmaru Ikebukuro, 2 Chome-13-8 Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tōkyō-to 171-0014, Japan. Open 11:00am to 3:00pm and 5:00pm to 10:30pm. Closed Sunday.

    Yaaay Oden ohhmyy, I'm so addicted to this dish and everytime I see it my heart beats fast haha. Don't know why but it's the perfection of comfort food to me. But I don't see it that often in food vlogs, maybe it's not that exciting looking like other dishes, hmm. My heart(or stomach;P) sees the real beauty in it haha XD this wasn't just fan-service or viewer-service, it was "only-me-Plejades-service" thank you sooo so much, like all your videos a treasure of amazing sights, lovely charming moderartion as always, and just a complete box full of feel good.
    Ohh, and sake mixed with broth sounds deliiicious, like a good start in the day ;) send you lovely greetings and hope you have a wonderful day ^^/

      😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 "only- me -Plejades -service" happy to oblige Pelajade!! This oden was amazing- I hope you get the opportunity to try it one day. Every time I eat oden I think to myself "why don't you eat this more often- it is incredible!" I'm really glad we got to visit this local spot for it. Thanks for watching and commenting and hope you're having a great week mate. Cheers, Sheena

    Hahaha, Sheena is such a Japanese food connoisseur for ordering daikon & egg from oden. FYI, Akabane is famous for getting hammered in the morning as they have many izakayas that are open early in the morning hence everyone is drinking sake & beer already. BTW, did they not serve you sansho pepper at the unagi restaurant? It's a must have seasoning when eating unagi, as it cuts through the richness.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 лет назад

      😝😝😝😝😝😝 what a compliment オオシマジュン hahahah daikon and egg are a must I reckon! Thanks so much for the background on Akabane- it was such a cool area- I'd love to head back there and explore more! Ahh yes we filmed a segment with the sansho pepper but Thomas deemed it too boring to include 😂 so we did eat it and enjoy the unagi with the sansho pepper but just didn't include it in the video 😝 Hope you enjoyed this video and thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena

      We hope so too mate! Is Nikkei cuisine quite popular where you live in Lima? We’d love to try it one day! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one. Cheers, Sheena

      @@ChasingaPlate According to your question, Nikkei food is good, even though we prefer Chifa food, which is the fusion between Chinese and Peruvian food. That was due to the influence of Chinese people (specifically from Canton region) who came to Peru many years ago. One more thing: Spanish is the dominant language, even though there are many other languages spoken here, like Quechua and Aymara. Good luck with that information. Bye.
      PD: Speak some Spanish when you come here soon.

    I'm beginning to think Sheena is a genius in researching!!- you just never see these types of foods on any other show (in most of your videos something is EXTREMELY rare/unique!!) today's example being the fish cakes, etc... in the hot broth... You'll NEVER find that anywhere here in Vancouver, and I've never seen it on any other channel here on RUclips!! THUMBS UP guys!!!!!!

I wonder if they're called Stamina Balls because of their mix of ingredients- sesame seeds, carrot, spring onion, fish paste- so they're like "power balls"?
