  • September 29, 2006 - Fresh off the factory floor in Southern Brazil, a sleek $25 million Legacy business jet is being delivered to its new owner in New York. An hour into the flight the plane is powering through the skies over the Amazon Rain Forest. Suddenly a violent jolt sends shock waves through the plane.
    Investigators suspect that events on the Legacy and the crash of the GOL flight are related, but how?
    From Season 5 Episode 10 "Phantom Strike": Passengers look out the window and are horrified to see that part of the plane’s wing has been sheared off. The jet has become hard to control, and the damage to the wing is getting worse. The crew must land. Below them, a dense jungle stretches as far as the eye can see. Luckily the crew spots an Army base with a runway long enough for their plane. But with the damage to their wing, they know it could be a rough landing. They come in fast but manage to bring the plane to a stop before the end of the runway. That’s when a whole new problem develops. The passengers and crew are detained and interrogated by police. Another plane, a Boeing 737 with 154 people on board crashed nearby. Everyone on board GOL Flight 1907 was killed.

      this is insane, these pilots in the Legacy are 2 idiots and their license should be revoked for life, how did they not realize that they are putting their foot on top of the flight instruments???? how did they not noticed their transponder was turned off??? if their flight plan required them to descend to 36K after passing Brasilia why didn't they enquire the flight controller about it????Do you really need somebody to tell you that stepping on the instrument can affect their configuration????? this so much dumb sh1t, it's insane.......

    I really admire Mr. Rodrigues. As a representative of the Brazilian ATC Association, many would expect him to immediately jump to the defense of the controllers, like the Pilot's Associations tend to do with regard to pilots. The fact is, he was honest, and showed tremendous character by stating FACTS....(that is sure a novel idea in this day and age). He made a point of defending the pilots (who were from another country, as well), by reminding everyone that pilots are never to change altitude without ATC clearance to do so, save for emergencies/Mayday situations. He certainly has my respect.

      I've done maintenance on these planes, in general you need to be able to isolate systems in the event of an emergency or failure, for instance if TCAS is producing bad data it'll do more harm to have it on. Etc

      @@thegoldenatlas753 exactly. All systems can be isolated in a plane via software and electronic. If the software gets corrupted it may spread to other systems. Think of the Pitot tube for example, a ratty pitot tube can alter the autopilot. So isolating the software is good, it's the same reason why planes have an option for inertial reference on their IMU. They use GPS, but if that gets ratty data the plane is able to fly using itself as a reference. It has a stable member used as a fix point reference. This disables practically EVERY flight safety measure such as TCAS. But is extremely important to have in case of a GPS failure. It is important to electrically separate systems too incase of a short. A fire in an airplane is catastrophic, and smoke can not be filtered by the canisters which are either Activated Carbon or Lithium Hydroxide. Either way, terrible thing to happen. So the breakers can be pulled. It's very important for these things.

      I would think it would have more to do with not being used while parked at a gate. While sitting at a gate an aircraft would receive near constant warnings at larger airports, and on ground radar it would create a lot of clutter from aircraft that aren't moving. They don't receive RAs though because there would be no way to climb or descend while on the ground. There is also the issue of power loading. Everything can be pretty much turned on/off, and it would be bad if everything came on as soon as the battery switch was turned on.

    The way the plane spun at 18:04 and again at 45:09 was enough to turn my stomach. I can't even imagine being a passenger on that flight while it was happening. I admit, I don't know much about g-forces and the like, but I hope they were unconscious as they fell. It would be terrifying to endure that.

      Passengers don't understand anything. They think pilots are just sky Uber drivers. I'm a pilot, believe me the amount of hours, knowledge, skill, experience needed to be an airline pilot is a lot, and there are so many flight rules, when something happens that you lose control of your plane, it's even a worse feeling for the pilots, than the passengers, who probably still think their "sky Uber drivers" will save them any moment, while the pilots know they're fuked and they KNOW they're done. While passengers just scream as usual, even with some minor bumps in turbulence. So being a pilot in this situation is worse

    Seems like it might be an even better idea to have a VOICE come on and state "TCAS IS OFF" or some such in the event it is accidentally (or otherwise) shut off, rather than just an alarm buzzer, since this is so critical of a system. (Same regarding the manual switch off of automatic interior air pressure, the switching off of which killed another plane full of passengers and crew, ie the air got so thin as the plane reached high altitude that everyone aboard, including the pilots, fell unconscious...all because one tiny switch was turned off).

    Wow, I never knew that these winglets were that strong?!
    I was on the MD11 design team and I never would have thought the winglets would chop off a wing of a 737.

      The forces become more understandable when you look at "stuff that happens in violent tornadoes". The airplanes' combined speed was far greater than the wind speed in an EF-5 tornado which is known for making various objects & materials do things you'd never think was possible.

    Another thought, on the technology involved in this: If my $35 Midland NOAA weather radio can flash its lights and annoy me with chirps because it hasn't received a "required weekly test" from the National Weather Service in over 10 days, then aviation radar can be made to flash & yell when it hasn't heard from a plane's transponder in a while.

      It should be triple redundant like other instruments, and be active as long as there is power to the plane, be that from the engines, the APU, or battery.

    My theory on why the 737 made no mayday contact.
    1. Things went wrong far too fast the pilots were focused on regaining control and figuring out what happened.
    2. In the first few spins the pilots may have been unable to gain control to the sudden movements.
    3. Gloc. In 11 spins it may have only taken 2 or 3 spins and they are unconscious at increasing speed and g forces.
    Conclusion its sad but hopefully due to gs most may have been unconscious

      you can't control the plane if 3/4 of your wings are off. The side of the plane that has its wing cut will suddenly drop putting you in a 90 degree bank and then will pick down and start spinning in a nose dive. There Is NO POSSIBILITY to recover. NONE. It's not a car. Your trying to compare a car with planes, and car driving vs pilots..it's not the same at all. How long of driving training does it normally take until you get your license? At most 5-6 hours maybe 10 at most? To get into a major airline, you will have at least 2500-3500 flight hours before you can fly major airlines, and 1500 hours minimum for regional airlines. Pilots arent just sky Ubers. And you don't become a pilot with zero flight hours by applying at an airline and getting on the job training for a month or so in a jet and boom your a pilot. You have to become a pilot yourself, get an instrument rating, multi engine rating, get your commercial pilot license. Get crew experience..become a flight instructor, and then instruct others how to fly until 1500 hrs. It's not simple. And you need to have a LOT of knowledge and skill about aviation and flying to be a pilot.

      @@davidt8087 sir i know you cannot recover but in the moment and speed at which things happened they will try to control the plane. I have friends who are pilots and have been for many years. One was a commercial airline pilot. I asked them on their opinion on this incident. We all know its impossible to gain control you are correct.

    The controller has been on duty for only a year. ??? I would think that a year of experience should be sufficient. If they had said a week, I could perhaps understand.

    Dude...I been spam watching these videos and all I can say is I am VERY glad I do not fly. I would have a heart attack if I did and something happened. People say it is safer than driving, but with driving I am already on the ground. just to scary for me.

    One thing you never hear about is the other unsung hero in all of this is polar air cargo (polar 71). The ones that actually studied this incident or listened to the actual cvr know what I mean.

    I love how you guys find 20 different ways and 5 different people to say "The planes ran into each other". It really makes it interesting when not only the narrator, but an ATC agent, the flight investigator, the narrator again, the flight investigator (but fancier this time), and then some random guy on the street. Just in case I really didn't understand that the wing tip hit the other plane's wing. Really understand it now, thanks guys :)

    It amazes me how shockingly accurate these altimeters are. Unfortunately, both planes were exactly right on the mark at 37,000 ft

    There is absolutely no reason for the crew to be able to turn off the transponder. NONE. Malaysian 370 could not have gone missing if the pilot had not turned off the transponder. This collision occurred because the transponder was off. Quit worshiping pilots and make that thing always on. Fuses, inaccessible to pilots, would do just fine.

      There should be an alarm on that very important system. And the air traffic control should of had better training to know what the 2 numbers mean and should also know what the z means. If they knew any of that they could of prevented it but the people trained them are the problem.

    Here’s another aspect not mentioned. Modern technology makes for more precise automatic guidance. When planes are flying the same route at the same altitude in opposite directions, they will be on a collision course. A prudent rule would be to fly to the right of the center of the course by at least half the wingspan of the aircraft. If such a rule were built into all the autopilots, collisions for this reason would be avoided.

      They make documentaries about plane crashes.... They are based on actual plane crashes... Would you like more planes to crash so they can make more episodes? There have only been a specific number of plane crashes hence there being a specific amount of episodes which yes they do recirculate from time to time.

    What I can't get past is why a north bound jet was approved to fly in at a south bound flight level. It seems to me that the person who ultimately caused the accident was person who approved their flight plan. Why did that person not catch that they were planning to fly in the wrong lane? Catching that would have prevented the accident from happening regardless of the problems with ATC.

    This could be solved with the same thing Apple did with the computer world: Make the display graphics human-friendly. Have the assigned altitude displayed as a "speed limit sign" (black letters on white) and the actual altitude displayed as white letters on a background of green or red depending on how well it conforms to "assigned." Then "the big picture" would be pretty hard for a controller to miss. You'd have slogans like they teach in flight school ("White over red, pilot is dead") except it would be "A happy screen is all white and green, but white next to red will make someone dead." Same kind of graphics you get on GPS driving apps that tell you what the speed limit is and whether or not you're obeying.

      All electrical components in an airplane must able to be manually turned off incase of failure, not being able to do this could result in fire.

    It may be unjust that the smaller plane survived while the larger plane did not, but so long as both planes were at their assigned altitude, this crash is a result of an ATC error, not an error on any of the pilots.
    World wide it is well established what a pilot flying IFR (ATC is responsible for separation) if radio contact is lost, the pilot should continue following the flight plan as filed. This is what controllers will expect.

      It would have been impossible to see in time to do anything because of the speed they were both traveling and because of the curvature of the earth. (EDIT: the curvature of the earth would have made the 737 look to be at a different altitude until the very last few seconds)

      @@dazedgal Can you direct me to the time stamp? The only reason I can think of is because the plane had crashed. There was nothing malfunctioning with the 737s transponder and as far as I know the 737s equipment had absolutely nothing to do with this incident.

      The ATC could see the 737. The issue was they thought the Embrauer was at a different altitude because it was showing the altitude of the flight plan instead of the actual altitude due to the transponder being off.

      @@tommym321 TS 12:00. Op is right, they make it sound like the ATC never picked up the 737 and have no idea where it is, despite the fact they were tracking the much smaller business jet that hit it. Likely poor writing/editing on the show's part, imo.

      I get it, but how could you reasonably expect the AVERAGE person to willingly incriminate themselves. Maybe what we could do is if someone takes the 5th some type of immunity could be offered so at least the mistake could be uncovered and learned from to keep others safe. It does suck that it would effectively means that those involved in these incidents would never face punishment, but if that was gonna happen anyway by them refusing to speak then at least we can find out what happen and try to keep others from the same fate.

    My question is how could the controller mistake a planned altitude for the actual altitude? And shouldn't there be a difference?
    Also I am wondering, could it be that the pilot couldn't figure out how to turn the tcas on without the transponder being on? He said he was having trouble figuring things out. 🤔

      it sounds like TCAS requires the transponder to be on in order to function. and as for the controller, that's just poor training and overwork. two numbers right next to each other, he probably just swapped them in his mind. a lot of UI/UX work seems to have been needed to make things clearer.

      ​@@acolytetojippityCorrect! Tcas requires the transponder. Tcas works for a feature called Mode S, which is part of the transponder. Without it, the TCAS can't "see" other aircraft and therefore can't perform any of its functions

    Never seen a plane brought down by a damaged winglet before. Even if the fragments went through an engine (unlikely from that far out on the wing), could still fly just fine.

      Only takes one plane crashing from a problem never seen before to change the history books, If the pilots thought they might crash, they could have been right, it didn't show the extent of the internal damage caused by the crash, a collision of 1600 kph could have caused significant damage to the wing that could not be seen in this re-enactment, remember the wing tip cut the 737's wing in two, the impact was huge. I was not there neither were you, since the plane didn't crash we will never know if it would have or not if they had flown it farther. Your comment is mute no way of knowing either way just your opinion.
      As for "flying just fine" even if one of the engines were damaged. Personally I have flown a number of times, never had a plane with one or more engines not working. Hope it never happens, yes the pilots are trained how to deal with situations where they lose the use of an engine, but It is far from ideal and not without risk, the likelihood of a crash goes up considerably. If faulty engines were no issue maintenance would not be critical on airplanes.

      @@gojewla It is true, winglets are not necessary, and some were added after the original design, however this winglet cut the 737's wing in half, imagine the forces exerted on the wing that hit the 737, the internal damage to that wings structural members was undoubtedly huge, one should not underestimate how that could cause the jet to crash shortly after the collision if the wing broke in two, or deformed and stopped, functioning properly, one should consider the aftermath of such a failure.

    “The radar shows it flying up and down dangerously.” No, it wasn’t. The planes transponder was off, and was being tracked by primary radar only. This is purely a result of the fact that primary radar gets less and less accurate as distance increases. So it appears to be showing variations in altitude when the actual target is not.

    34:58 I don't know, a year on the job seems adequate to me had he prior necessary training. I can see how difficult this job is ~ to maintain such disciplined concentration to every detail every minute...numbers after numbers "flying by" on radar. It seems they would change some of these numbers to letters or symbols where possible ~ like made a code word for a plane's name ~ that would be at least a few less numbers in action.

      Apparently, when in the air, planes are moving so fast that they can't see one another, especially when going in opposite directions. On its face, it doesn't really make sense, but I've heard it before, from people who are actually involved in the industry, so I suspect it's true.

    The pilots of private knew they were flying at 37 when they were supposed to be at 36...this should have been questioned and confirmed multiple times...knowing human error is a daily factor you must check check check yourself and those controlling you...Bad communication....pilots who have no sense of urgency or priority to safety....pilots who do not know how to control their flight plan...they were not able to maintain communication...

THIS is an obvious and important contradiction of facts given by the lead investigator. Can't wait to hear how these investigators do their investigating and what they report.

      The plane itself didn't hit very hard because it disintegrated before striking the ground. The CVR, however, was presumably separated from the majority of the aircraft and struck the ground hard enough to come apart _by itself._

      ...Because it wasn't just the TCAS disabled, it was the entire transponder system, which the TCAS uses. With the Legacy's transponder not functioning, the 737's TCAS system literally could not see the smaller jet getting dangerously close, and most passenger jets don't have radar that can see other aircraft. As far as I know, the only actual onboard radar system most jets that aren't military have is their weather radar set.

      Because the (older tech) radar was only accurate to within 2-3k feet. With the plane's TCAS off, it was not broadcasting its own altitude readings, so the ATC system recorded the planes altitude based solely on the radar readings. So with each rotation of the radar, their altitude was recorded as actual plus/minus whatever the error margin happened to be that time.

    Lessons learned do not buy a cheap plain in Brazil or get a Brazilian plastic surgery in Brazil you may get more than you bargain for, that plane remain there over a year and two pilots in prison for months with loss wage, any income on using that suppose new 20million plane ended up costing way more lawyers fees, investment interest losses, those cheap plastic surgery kills and have live long problems that journalists came out good he had way more stories to tell

    No matter how much money and technology you throw at aviation, it's a risk. While tech and procedural ergonomics can minimize accidents, they end up being the back drop against which pilot error plays out. As our technology improves at second guessing human nature, safety will be enhanced; but flying will never be risk free.

    Love how the pigs have to hound the private jet pilots instead of just checking if the private jet's flight data recorder indicates any erratic flying. Also that the key part of the most important black box in the plane is just missing. Yeah sure.
    Gotta pad your hours I guess when the tax payer is footing the bill for your doughnuts and coffee.
