  • YanksAtShea brings you the New York Yankees most notorious moment of their two season sub-tenancy at Shea Stadium. John Chancellor of NBC News tells us of the Yankees salute to the 200th Anniversary of the Army which got a little out of hand on a June night in 1975. The Army's cannons fired their 21 gun pre-game salute a little too close to those green, wooden Shea fences and...well, you'll see. Walter also gives the final scores. Shea Stadium never looked better. If only Bonds could have provided the same firepower for the Yankees that season.

I was in the Army Band. The fence was burning after the 3rd volley, but the FA kept firing through the full 21.

This was six months before I got to the band. I played three opening days for the Mets and one for the Yankees at Shea with no damage to the stadium.

As productive as Bonds was, the trade for Figeuroa and Rivers was a steal. The off-season of 1975 was maybe the best trading period the Yanks have ever had in their history. In 3 separate deals they got Mickey, Figgy, Willie, Dock Ellis, Ken Brett and Oscar Gamble. Gabe Paul was a shrewd GM.

Sparky Lyle mentions this moment in his book the "Bronx Zoo". He says it was surreal. They just kept firing the cannons like nothing was happening. It's a little unfair to pick on Bonds cause after he got hurt in June in Chicago he was never the same with the Yanks. He kept playing but Rudy May said he played "on one good leg". He still hit 32 homers. What's interesting is that if hadn't feuded with Billy Martin he might've stayed. And then we wouldn't have gotten Figgy and Rivers.

I saw this game on tv with my uncle. I was a 15 year old Yankee fan. Crazy.

Hey, I remember seeing this on TV when it happened! And for the next ten years it never looked like they fixed that fence right. It always looked like it was gonna fall back down. By this time, Shea Stadium was only 11 years old and already it was a dirty dump. I know coz I went to about a hundred games, Mets and Yankees, those few years.

There is something very 1970s about this story. Don't ask me to explain that remark; either you get it or you don't.

A screwup at Shea, and we can't blame this one on the most incompetent organization in baseball history! The Mets had nothing to do with it!
