NBC was trying something different - bringing back Brinkley to team with Chancellor. The newscast was divided into four segments - a longer look at the day's main story, shorter stories on other items, "Segment 3" which was a longer, in depth report that (as shown here) could go over several days, and a lighter story to end the program. Nice idea of having "mirror" identical sets for Chancellor and Brinkley.
Classics from the past. I was only three in 1978. Wow,the legendary 1970's. Disco,8-track tapes,Tab Soda and so on. Man I miss them. The day's of my youth.
and this may have been one of the first time anchors acutally reporting standing up -- something Brokaw did a lot later. And that Mancini theme was great !!
I used to watch the NBC Nightly News with John Chancellor and David Brinkley in the late 1970s. I liked the opening music and I liked the air of professionalism of these two anchors. Today network news is annoying, the fake inflection in their voices, I think all these newbies go to the same broadcasting school to learn to speak a certain (annoying) way. And I HATE all the crap running along the bottom of the TV screen these days which is distracting from watching the broadcast.
@@ScoopNemeth Peter Jennings had quit smoking but after 9/11 he started again guess it was the horror of what happened that made him do it huh????>?!!!....even though it's been 5 years I hope you will reply to this
@Studio27 my mama smoked and when we would eat at Walgreen grill (this was a restaurant that was owned by Walgreens Drugs) in the mall we would sit by the window when she smoked so the smoked so the smoke would go out into the mall...I hope you will reply to this
Yeah, me too! That was weird. She lost the case, but they gave her the wrong baby??? Say WHAT??!! I wonder where the rest of this story can be found....
EricEbac22 Howard Reig, who, as an NBC staff announcer, did the opening voiceovers for NBC Nightly News until about 2008 (I could be wrong about the year though)

Your probably 45 or 44 now
@rooseveltdavis9559 I was older than you in 1978 I was 9 years old now in 2024 I 55 years old you must be 49 years old I hope you will reply to this
I like how in 1978 the news was about croissants. 40 years later it's about Stormy Daniels.
Now in 2024 they’re talking about her.
RIP!! John Chancellor & David Brinkley!!
I really like this version of the NBC Nightly News theme music by Henry Mancini.
and this may have been one of the first time anchors acutally reporting standing up -- something Brokaw did a lot later. And that Mancini theme was great !!
They had a nice little theme song written for their broadcast, I thought.
many times I did -- old enough to remember this ...

Indeed - VERY brief. I would have liked to have heard more about the croissant, though.
Note Brinkley putting out a cigarette at the very beginning.
Just like ANOTHER ABC newsman Peter Jennings. Both Jennings and Brinkley smoked! WOW!
People could smoke indoors in the 70s. I've lost relatives to smoking related illnesses.
Pat O’Brien has some interesting stories about being an intern for Brinkley.

I hope y'all will reply to this RIP John Chancellor and David Brinkley oh and I love croissants though I haven't had one in a long time
I like this format and really admired Chancellor and Brinkley. I think I would have watched them rather than Cronkite.
John?
I'm still stuck on the wrong baby story. Say what?

Who did the opening intro announcement?

+EricEbac22 It Was Bill Hanrahan.

This could've been a report from The Onion not necessarily the news.
That news theme is pathetic. That's why I used to watch other stuff as a kid at the time. ABC World News Tonight had the best on air look.
@jaworskjj it's not pathetic it was composed by the great Henry Mancini
I felt the same. Roone Arledge was a genius and he made something out of ABC news. NBC had Brinkley and Chancellor but a horrible set and music.
