- In this video I show some real-life testing of the Surface Pro 3 pen , which is the N-trig digitizer. I show writing in OneNote and drawing in the fresh paint app. For a more technical discussion regarding N-trig vs Wacom digitizers, see these links:

Enjoy the video!! Note - I'm also posting the Yoshi drawing video separately so that it's easier to share.
Finally, Thank you. I've been looking for a writing demo. I'm thinking about getting it for school.
It's prefect for school, I keep my first gen surface pro with me everywhere on campus. Its especially great for note taking, I even have my entire calc 2 notebook written with on my surface pro with it's pen. This new version of the pro would be even better
I just got one. Traded in my Surface Pro 2 to get it. Anything you can with with a normal pc, you can do with this. I recently found a way to use all my normal Google apps on the SP3. So essentially, I can do everything that a tablet and a pc can do. Love it!!
Honestly, if your just going to use it for note taking than I would recommend for you to check out the Boogie Board 9.7. It's not perfect, but it is a fraction of the price compared to the SP3 (also a pro if your just using it for notes). Good way to go green.
Dear!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the stylus on the surface pro 3 has a huge potential that hasn't been shown off on any channel on youtube!
For example, may we take a photo from the back camera that can be posted on onenote, and then we can take notes on the picture?
Can you show us how you could open a PDF and take notes on that? maybe you can combine the above action with the cloud sharing to another device.
Can you show us how elegant the processes can be?
Maybe those processes can be done much better on surface pro 3, which can trigger the attention of all the others who haven't noticed this awesome device!
Show us more possible methods of using the stylus in a more daily life way!
PLEASE!
Thanks again Sean for your insightful Surface videos. This makes me much more confident in the SP3 capabilities.
Great video! Especially loved that you drew Yoshi and Baby Mario! Yoshi is the best!
Thank you for your super fast & careful response.
this is what I really wanted! great. I think this clip is the most detailed movie all over the youtube. Good job~
Excellent review, Sean, as you are always very informative in a practical way! Once again, because you are also excellent in your other two videos on the Surface Pro 3 that I have seen.
Thanks for the insightful video! Would it be possible to conduct another drawing test video but on Photoshop? And possibly with a larger document size say, a 13 by 19 inch document size with 360 DPI? And then with the opacity and brush size set to adjust with pressure sensitivity? A few experimental brush strokes would really help in seeing how the lower 256 levels (compared to past 1024 levels with wacom) handles the light to dark and thick to thins, especially on a rather large document size.
I'm an artist looking at the surface pro 3 as a serious portable art station but the switch from wacom to ntrig has left me worried, please help!
Here's the easy solution - get one, try it out and see it it works out for you. If not - you can return it during 14 days for full 100% refund.
Just awesome videos, really great job. Think I watched Surface video of yours before and learnt some nice tricks n tips. Keep up the good work.
Great video, I'm not a huge fan of handwritten notes (terrible handwriting being the reason :D), but there are times when that would be handy. I currently sport a first gen RT and I really love it and will definitely buy a new Surface one day. This thing looks perfect for my needs, but is quite a bit out of my budget. But perhaps when I graduate and move back to work life I'll look into getting something along these lines. My Surface RT does quite nicely for now for my job and studies, but it's clear that it's getting dated, although it's physical build and feel is just phenomenal.
EXCELLENT! The pin point percission is a GAME CHANGER if its as good as it looks here. Can you try one extra test, get a trial of either Manga Studio or Sketchbook, do a rough drawing and then put a new layer over and try to trace ink in some lines and line up each end point.
One of the most annoying things in wacom screen tablets has been expected continuous line work with several passes and undos. Making for some long tricky sessions.
You demo is awesome !!! Thank you so much.
which surface pro 3 do you use? i3, i5, or i7? 4gb or 8gb ram?
Basically it's the same pen used in the Sony Vaio 13. You have to use a little more pressure than a UC-logic pen or Wacom just to make the thinnest line on any app that has pressure sensitivity.
Thanks a lot for the info, there is a lot of debate about n-trig vs wacom, and with a good reason, if the S3 wants to be considered as an artists device, the digitizer system needs to be comfortable to use, and I think the minimum pressure (not the pressure levels) is what may make me discard this otherwise nice tablet. I, like others, have the opinion after many years using Wacom devices, that it's almost impossible to practically tell the difference between 256 levels of pressure and 1024 or more, but the minimum force required to make a brushstroke is ultra important, more when you use the pen over a glass surface. I currently have 3 wacom penabled pens (apart from my Cintiq ones) and one of them requieres more force than the others, so of course I almost never use it. It's a pity because I loved the 12" and 3:2 ratio of the new Surface, and I also like how n-trigs seem too get rid of the corner problems of Wacom technology, but for me is more important to have an excellent experience on the center of the screen than a just a "good" one over the whole surface. Anyhow, I want to see more reviews, and I hope that N-trig technology keeps improving; it's good for us that Wacom begins to have competitors, but at the same time it's a pity that we can't choose one technology or another for the same device.

awesome drawing! lol
this is a very good device need to get one
YOU ARE KING!!!! Thank you man.
Very nice, helpful video.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for the great video!! It would be even better if you can demo palm rejection on the SP3.
Hi Sean, Enjoyed your impressive video list which makes me want to run out and buy a Microsoft Surface. Is there anything you can't or don't do?! Serious note, I learned the Surface has come a long way and is extremely versatile. Cheers!
Thanks Christal!
Is there any pressure sensitivity in the Photoshop or Corel Painter?
NICE! u know i like drawing and coloring but sometimes i can't do that when i am in the car or when pencils need to be sharpened. This is perfect for me, THANK YOU> YOU ARE AMAZING. Also, can u show some gaming in the surface 3 and what does the buttons do on the pen. GREAT!
Nice drawing !
Your video is very helpful ....
I have one question.
Is that surface pro3 can be used only for pen mode? Actually if there is problem to take note without touching surface then it will be very uneasy to write fast.
Please answer...
Thanks, really informative video and great drawing.
Gave a like for the Amazing Drawing!
Hello Sean, great vid! I was wondering: when you are writting or drawing, do you have to be carefull not to touch the screen with your hand? or can you enable the apps so the only writting it gets comes directly from the pen and not your hands.
Thks!
I'm getting kind of used to the feel of the capacitive stylus on my Surface RT. I am not an artist, but I LOVE pen input for these devices. Do you think getting this expensive machine is worthwhile for us non-artists who like the pen input for notes and writing? Is there enough there to make the upgrade worthwhile?
@Sean Ong
Hello, could you tell me who the nib/tip of the pen feels. Is it more soft or rather hard? I heard from the support that you cant change the nib :( (I would prefere a pen with a soft nib, because to write down long textes is a lot more comfortable in my opinion..) Maybe there are other N-Trig pens with a soft nib, if its no a soft in the pen of the surface pro 3
Nice. Could you show it with Photoshop? The first two Surface came with Wacom technology, this doesn't. What do you think of that? Thanks!
Thanks for the video, which surface pro 3 do you use? i3, i5, or i7? 4gb or 8gb ram?
Nice drawing :D Thank you very much for this video ;)
Hi Sean! I think I asked this in the last video, but can this tablet run Wacom drivers and use a Wacom pen instead of the N-trig?
Nice video....Great.! What is the app that used for drawing? Photoshop?
It's Fresh Paint, which is an app in the Store.
Hi, i read from zdnet.com that the surface pro 3 pen uses a single AAAA battery and 2 tiny 319 coin cell batteries,so this pen uses 3 batteries inside or can choose either 1 AAAA or 2 "319 coin batteries"? sony vaio active pen also uses AAAA battery and claims 18 months battery life, how about this surface pro 3's battery life?
Hey Sean great videos. With one note, if you have written down some hand written notes, is there functionality to convert it to text?
I don't know about this video. I get the feeling there may be some bias behind the review maybe not. But when your testing the sensitivity along the edges, the scribbling is clearly skipping around. Also, you didn't touch on the palm rejection when writing on the surface. The palm rejection is such a key element in reviewing the digitizer. Personally, I had a bad experience with the palm rejection when using the surface pro 3 and I can't help but wonder if you left it out on purpose.
Noticed that too.
Well a lot of reviewers are given devices for free and in some cases are compensated. I don't mean to offend anybody but this review seemed to be influenced by either bias or incentives. However, its entirely possible that palm rejection and the like was overlooked.
Très bonne vidéo Sean !!!
Are you using sketchbook pro for tablets or are do the surface pro 3 use the desktop version. I currently draw on my Note8 and would love to make the leap to a desktop version and also Utilize the full Adobe Photoshop from CS6 or above.
so what about the palm rejection feature? Does it work? Also, I've heard some complaints about accidentally hitting the windows button while drawing.. Did that happen to you?
Hey, little bit of a question here. You seem to be using the pen without triggering any touch from your skin on the screen. Are you actually hovering your hand or does windows have the option of disabling touch while still allowing the pen to work?
+ProgramGamer
It disables sensitivity to skin, so, while pen is being used, you can support your hand on the screen without affecting the drawing
+brunografia Have you found any difficulty, glitches or marks by anything other than the pen while its in use since youve made this video?
+karooyomitoheagato I haven't made this video...
I didn't really understand your question, but, if I did, I'd say that no, I never found any marks on the computer screen, either from the pen or anything else. As for glitches.....
I can't quite see from the video, but is it possible to draw with the pen whilst resting your hand on the surface? (as you would writing on paper)
Thanks for the video. How's the palm rejection? I see a lot of spots on the right hand side of the drawing where your palm was resting. Second, how's the performance in the corners? On the sp2 which i have, the cursor drifted away from the tip of the pen tremendously. How's it on the sp3? Thanks!
muitosabao The "light" dots you see were probably a results of my palm. The thicker lines and ink were due to me trying to pinch-to-zoom but the Fresh Paint not picking it up and painting instead. I didn't notice any of the "dots" when using my palm in OneNote - so I'm not sure if the Fresh Paint app is more sensitive. So I'd say palm blocking works great in OneNote but causes undesired "dots" in Fresh Paint. Not sure about other apps. As for corners - I've not noticed any strange behavior.
Thank you, helpful video !
I have question. Does the fan turn on when you are taking note or drawing,
or annotating pdf (so, in principle, not cycles hungry activities) ?
i'm a phd, reading and annotating pdf is a good part of
my job. I own an small ipad now and it is great with iAnnotate, the problem
is there is no "realistic" stylus, so i'm consideriing the Surface 3.
Thank you in advance for your comment!
And another thing; would you recommend this for digital art programs like Photoshop and MangaOne?
Does the Surface Pro 3 have the option to recognize the stylus only? so you can rest your hand on the screen and not have it interfere with the drawing?
How did you erase everything so quickly at the beginning of the video? Can you assign a button to be the eraser?
What determines the pressure sensitivity, The N-trig pen or the digitizer on the screen? as N-trig uses a different approach to Wacom hence the required battery and Bluetooth I'm asking as it would be cool if Microsoft were able to release different pens perhaps with more levels of pressure sensitivity?
Just one question. How does it feel writing, browsing, reading books and things alike in Portrait?
I'm asking this because I really disliked using SP2 in portrait mode for these kinds of things. Yet in my iPad feels natural and much better.
lol! He said iPad go away with your toy! Haha smh iPad is a toy not a PC! Fact
Nuno Lopes Feels MUCH better. I have the Surface 2 (not pro) but the screen size was the same as the Surface Pro 2 and I never used it in portrait mode. It was too long and felt strange. But I've been using the Surface Pro 3 in portrait and I must say that it feels natural, like a notepad or piece of paper.
Nuno Lopes you are lying if you say it feels more natural WRITING on an iPad with a capacitive stylus over a Surface Pro 2 with a Wacom digitiser and fine-tipped active stylus. Same goes for sketching.
Some people are just FOS.
Hi Sean ! I have a question for you :) I currently have a surface 2 and one of the biggest issue for me is that the camera is lacking Auto Focus. When I want to take a picture of my notes with one notes. It result in blurry pictures. So does the new camera has autofocus ?
Hi I just want to know if you can use the pen to make notes on Digital textbooks or is it just on PDF files
Awww. that drawing is soo cute. Nice review though.
I heard handwritten text in OneNote is convertible to digital text which can be copied to MS Word processing. Could the same be done in Cyrillic or any other font?
I'm curious about something. Can the eraser button be changed to open something else? Like, could I set the button to open Photoshop instead? Because that would be really useful since part of my main reason for buying a Surface Pro 3 would be for drawing.
That seems quite sensitive - out of curiosity, is that the i3, i5, or i7?
ntrig does a way better job with calibration than wacom :D Too bad their activation distance blows which causes huge issues with what people refer to as "palm block". If they would just boost the activation distance they would completely overtake wacom.
Amazing! Impressive!
Excellent video, however it did not show if his writings were converted to text !
When I double click the pen to try and take a screen shot, it does not allow me to take a clip nor does it show a superimposed image of my screen shot. Is there a setting that I need to change? I and not familiar at all with this, new to it all. What am I doing wrong? Can you please help me?
Can you still use the top of the stylist as an eraser in onenote?
Great video, I consider buying a surface pro 3 for my photo editing on the road, when I would do that I'd have my hand on the screen all the time, is there a way to turn off touchscreen so the hand dosn't mess up the touch and make it so it only recognizes the pen? thanks
I the point of the Surface Pro 3 stylus pen a rubber tip or a plastic tip?
HI Sean,
How do you change the point size in PowerPoint when you are actually in slideshow mode? The beginning size is toooo small. Thanks, Rod
Can I use the pro pen 3 on any other windows tablet, will it work on other windows tablets like it works on the microsoft surface?
Does Ntrig pen is compatible with applications like Zbrush or mudbox ?
This demo is awesome!! I was wondering if the Ntrig pen is compatible with applications like Sketchbook Pro, Illustrator, and Zbrush. Does anyone know?
im thinking about getting i3 for my school. all i do is watch movie sometimes and take a note with one note. do u think its good idea to get i3? or i5?
would there be lagg on i3?
hello
did u use one note installer in ur surface pro 3 or use onenote in office2013 ?
Which version is it please? As in i3, i5 or i7 because it performs very smothly!
I am going to buy a new laptop for design. I hope to know that is surface pro 3 suitable for 3D models design (SolidWorks,Rhino) ? Or Macbook air/pro is a better choice? Thanks!
What happens when you touch the screen with the finger while you are writung? At my Note 10.1 nothing, so you dont have the Problem, that you wash away the written words.
Wow this guy is like a real life Jason from "Home Movies" -- except holy * that talent at drawing.
So you feel that the Ntriq stylus is better than the wacom stylus for the Surface Pro and Pro 2?
Yeah. I mighy skip out on the pro 3 for now. I have the original pro. It lacks it many ways but does everything I need it to do for school. Really digging the form factor of the Pro 3 though. I think that the 3:2 aspect ratio is the biggest temptation for me (combined with the larger screen size and thinner device)
Nice, but, I am still unable to write with it, I did pair my pen with bluetooth. I have the tablet and pen since 2015.
Why couldn't you do that with a surface pro 2? I'm thinking of getting a 2 to save money, and draw web comics with it, people say the pro 2's pen was better. Also does anyone know if you can use a Wacom pen with a pro 3?
When you look for a wacom feel tablet, it says it works only with 1 & 2. I got surface pro 1 to save money & for the wacom pen. Don't regret it (only thing better is a wacom companion )
can you make a video about the normal boot time?
Hi there, what app was you using to do your Yoshi and Mario drawing on
+AIDEN Hughes The app is called "Fresh Paint" and it comes pre-installed free on all surface devices.
Thank you
when i hold the pen in one spot on the screen it does a right click, how do i turn that off
How do you insert space between words on the on screen keyboard. Everytime I write the keyboard just mashes all my handwritten words together
I think you use the space bar
"I couldn't have done this (really) on the surface pro 2". Really? Of course you could --sp2 has an excellent wacom implementation. Also--this drawing does very little to show off pressure sensitivity. And--not to bash--a video on the pen with no mention of the quality of palm rejection? Still--i think this helped a lot of buyers.
Which Surface Pro 3 version are you using?? @Sean Ong #Sean Ong
How does the SP3 work with Sketchable?
You drew a Mario character.
*NOW PREPARE YOUR BUTT FOR THE LAWSUIT FROM NINTENDO.*
Because they're dumb like that - lol.
Good review by the way.
is there palm rejection?
does it only work in the surface? because I also got one and it does not work in my sony-vaio
Yes, it only works with the surface pro 3 specifically. There may be pens that can work with the sony-vaio but you'd have to look into that and check the comparability. Wacom has a bamboo line of pen styli that may be what you're looking for.
Hey. I'm heading off to college very soon and I'm debating on whether to buy a Mac Book or the Surface 3. My major is pre-engineering and i want a laptop that will help me get through college. Any ideas or any suggestions?
First of all if you don't have a Windows PC or Laptop of some kind, you should definitely get the Surface. Because of the Programs which are used in engineering (i mean in college) you will need windows at some point. A friend of mine made the mistake of buying a Macbook, than she had to go buy a cheaper (but not really cheap because of the program running requirements) Windows laptop as extra, because the Macbook couldn't run the program, although she took it to the IT department etc.
Anyone know what program he used for drawing Yoshi? Also, what song was it?
Looks like he just used the windows 8 app Fresh paint. Shazam says that the song is---- Traditional: Sur lLe Pon D'avignon, Hoppel Hoppel Rhythm Club---
what about writing in MS word with pen?
How is the batterylife of the pen?
I'm thinking about getting a surface 2 and i was wondering if the keyboard comes with it for free. can anyone help me?
I'd really like to know if you can draw on any page? For example if I'm just browsing google can I draw a picture on there? Is there maybe an app that would allow such a thing? Or are we only allowed to draw in certain apps?
If you're browsing the web or doing anything, you only have to double click your pen's top button on the Surface Pro 3 and then it will take a snap shot. You then select which portion you want to save and it sends it to OneNote for you to mess with.
Download a free piece of software called Epic Pen. I have it installed on my Surface pro 2 and it is amazing. You can write everywhere on the desktop. Write on a RUclips video while it is playing, or in Google Earth. Works great.
Do one with the pro 4 please
+moni salinas What would you like to see? Any special requests for when I do this for the SP4?
to write straight, does it has any templates?
+Sean Ong I would love to see more total app reviews. I could not find a decent one of Fresh Paint anywhere before I bought by SP4.
It's is good for an student
I don't speck english
Thanks
how is writing for a leftie?
How do I use the pen to sign a PDF?
+Liz Kiener It's amazing how dumb is the fact that we now have a pen to use with our Windows computer, but can mostly only use it through OneNote. What you have to do is to install the full version of OneNote, launch it, then open your PDF, hit "print" and, when selecting a printer, click on "send to OneNote". The app will now open your document, you can sign it, and then, again, hit "print" and export it as a PDF.
OneNote is not easy to use, or very intuitive. It is actually quite annoying, but as you face the difficulties, you Google your questions and find the workarounds.
how about photoshop?
5:11 DAMN.
2:19
What a lie! You can draw just as good with pen on the previous gen surface. And that drawing was pointless. He used none of the pressure sensitivity, all he did was scratch the lines in.
"What a lie!"
wow
so hatred
very grudge
wow
Actually, dirkit, he said "surface 2," not "surface PRO 2." If that wasn't enough, he also mentioned a "rubberized tip" stylus, which, when you put two and two together, doesn't make sense for the SP2, as it has a regular Surface Pen, while the S2 doesn't support a pen and needs a third party (usually rubber-tip) stylus. In conclusion, don't make yourself look silly by not listening well enough :) P.S. mad respect goes out for the drawing, someone who says otherwise clearly didn't have a childhood.
Aman Partap Aman Partap nah, don't make YOURSELF look silly by telling me something I already know. I'm not saying the tablet sucks, I want one. I'm saying you can draw just as good with the surface pro (which I have)
dirkit247 Stop being stubborn. Surface 2 is and the surface Pro 2 are NOT THE SAME. he said he couldnt do the same on the Surface WITHOUT the PRO because the non pro surface only has capacitive touch.
Baby Mario e Yoshi (Y)
pen too slow
