Would have taken longer, but you could have built the fireplace out of rock and mud that led up and out of the shelter. Just enough to allow the smoke to vent out.
Couldn't have a big enough fire to do any good for heat with that pile of kindling all around you and the drafty build. Maybe a clay layer inside would be enough to both insulate it and allow a bigger fire
