Having said all of this I would caution against underestimating any enemy, especially a nuclear-armed enemy who may feel cornered.

We should not think that when the "elite" within Russia is complaining that this is pro-ethics. No the complaints are mostly about why Ukraine is not being defeated. So even if Putin is removed or whatever, the policy against Ukraine will remain and might even be escalated. We often love to think that the complains increase in favor of a reasonable solution while in reality only a handful of people in Russia are on the good and ethical side of things.
