This is an incredible rock band that came together in 2013 through fate and circumstance. The difference you were wrestling with -- the cute costumes vs. the hard music -- is what they call the "gap", and it's meant to surprise people. Maid cafes are a cultural phenomenon in Japan, and one of the members (Miku, rhythm guitarist, backing vocals) worked in one before forming Band-Maid. Band-Maid's talent, compositional skills, and consistency are unmatched. Roger, You're the man! The Band-Maid look versus their sound is what they call the "gap". What you see is not the music you get. These five young Japanese females ROCK! If you have heard of the rock band Motorhead, Band-Maid has two songs that are reminiscent of their sound, "Moratorium" and "Clang". Since you are into the occult and "horror?", one Band-Maid song would probably be interesting to you. That song is "Rinne" (reincarnation). The video for the song was shot in black and white through an 8mm camera lens. Saiki, the group's lead vocalist is a fan of Japanese horror films and the premise behind the shoot was of a serial killer who filmed his victims as they died to capture their souls leaving their bodies. The music of "Rinne" is hard-core punk but the maid outfits belie their sound. Band-Maid is always fun to listen to and their music is NEVER boring. For great hard-rock song and for a display of the bandmember's talent and technical skills, "Hate?", the official live video, is a must watch. The concept - cute girls in maid outfits playing hard rock - was a gimmick thought up by the founder / vocalist / rhythm guitarist / band spokespigeon (it's a long story) Miku Kobato. The idea was that "the gap" between what you're looking at and what you're hearing would help you remember the band, thus giving them a leg up to success. It works, clearly, but it only goes so far. If they'd been bad singers or lackluster musicians, it wouldn't have meant much. They've become accomplished singers, incredible musicians, and the lead guitarist, Kanami Tono, has an uncanny ability to feed into our rock sensibilities in surprising, yet extremely catchy, ways. As a musical craftswoman building with song structures, she's an absolute master. So while the outfits are cute, don't let them fool you. This is a serious group of ladies set on one thing: World Domination.
The weirdness of the cute maids playing hard music is the point for them. They went for opposites to show you can be cute and still rock! In Japan they don’t seem care about stereotypes. Just because you rock hard doesn’t mean you dress like a slob or leather and chains, etc. Band-Maid is my top band but other bands that sort of follow the same feel are Lovebites (wearing beautiful dresses with power metal), Hanabie (Hanna-bee-eh) are very cute and very hard metal.

They are fantastic musicians and a great band with tons of great music. However, these gals (Miku Kobato is the founder and primary lyricist) skillfully rhyme English and Japanese, and even use double-entendre. Don't let the maid outfits sway you. this was the very first song that they wrote themselves and it's pretty old now. They are not a corporate act they are an organically formed band and now they are in our view the best band in the world today. They are life changing. While they don't class themselves as a metal band, they don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. THE best Hard Rock band in the universe. And in any parallel ones. This was the first song that they wrote themselves that was released. Prior to that, they'd had songs written for them. They've never released anything since that's not 100% theirs. Kanami on lead is the composer and Miku on rhythm guitar is the lyricist. They are at their best live so would recommend something like HATE? live from Yokohama, from their YT channel. No Minnie Mouse headresses here! They are maid headbands with a red rose (miku on rhythm guitar) or blue rose (Saiki on vocals) on them.
The maid costumes are a take-off from the Maid Cafes in Japan. The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing, demure maids vs what you are hearing Hard Rock. They have bees touring Europe and the US and Mexico since 2016. Suggestion: "Hate?" and/or "Domination" both live.

I've always thought the lead riff of Alone was uncanny too. I didn't really think too much of it until a friend of mine had the same reaction. We both concluded that it must have been something from one of the Tony Hawk games but the best answer we could come up with is a distorted memory of the riff from Papa Roach - Last Resort. These women have such a broad range of bands they draw influence from though, so it really could be anything. I'm a bit biased but I really do think these ladies deserve to be in the conversation for best actively touring band.

This is an incredible rock band that came together in 2013 through fate and circumstance. The difference you were wrestling with -- the cute costumes vs. the hard music -- is what they call the "gap", and it's meant to surprise people. Maid cafes are a cultural phenomenon in Japan, and one of the members (Miku, rhythm guitarist, backing vocals) worked in one before forming Band-Maid. Band-Maid's talent, compositional skills, and consistency are unmatched. As for next stop, it almost doesn't matter, but maybe for a little something interesting/creepy, try the Dice MV or Rinne (has a reincarnation theme, among other topics).

Roger, You're the man! The Band-Maid look versus their sound is what they call the "gap". What you see is not the music you get. These five young Japanese females ROCK! If you have heard of the rock band Motorhead, Band-Maid has two songs that are reminiscent of their sound, "Moratorium" and "Clang". Since you are into the occult and "horror?", one Band-Maid song would probably be interesting to you. That song is "Rinne" (reincarnation). The video for the song was shot in black and white through an 8mm camera lens. Saiki, the group's lead vocalist is a fan of Japanese horror films and the premise behind the shoot was of a serial killer who filmed his victims as they died to capture their souls leaving their bodies. The music of "Rinne" is hard-core punk but the maid outfits belie their sound. Band-Maid is always fun to listen to and their music is NEVER boring.
For great hard-rock song and for a display of the bandmember's talent and technical skills, "Hate?", the official live video, is a must watch. Make sure you have the closed captioned lyrics in English on. They are brutal but funny.

The concept - cute girls in maid outfits playing hard rock - was a gimmick thought up by the founder / vocalist / rhythm guitarist / band spokespigeon (it's a long story) Miku Kobato. The idea was that "the gap" between what you're looking at and what you're hearing would help you remember the band, thus giving them a leg up to success. It works, clearly, but it only goes so far. If they'd been bad singers or lackluster musicians, it wouldn't have meant much. They've become accomplished singers, incredible musicians, and the lead guitarist, Kanami Tono, has an uncanny ability to feed into our rock sensibilities in surprising, yet extremely catchy, ways. As a musical craftswoman building with song structures, she's an absolute master. So while the outfits are cute, don't let them fool you. This is a serious group of ladies set on one thing: World Domination.
If you do more BAND MAID then you'll often find yourself saying: "This reminds me of something" - they are very good at doing that.

The weirdness of the cute maids playing hard music is the point for them. They went for opposites to show you can be cute and still rock! In Japan they don’t seem care about stereotypes. Just because you rock hard doesn’t mean you dress like a slob or leather and chains, etc. Band-Maid is my top band but other bands that sort of follow the same feel are Lovebites (wearing beautiful dresses with power metal), Hanabie (Hanna-bee-eh) are very cute and very hard metal.

Don't let the maid outfits sway you. this was the very first song that they wrote themselves and it's pretty old now. They are not a corporate act they are an organically formed band and now they are in our view the best band in the world today. They are life changing. While they don't class themselves as a metal band, they don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog mayhem to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. And a thing about the maid outfits, Wyllow: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid calls the contrast between their cutesy maid costumes and their hard rock sound "the gap". They enjoy seeing the confused looks on people's faces when they walk on stage and the reaction when they start playing their heavy music.

THE best Hard Rock band in the universe. And in any parallel ones. This was the first song that they wrote themselves that was released. Prior to that, they'd had songs written for them. They've never released anything since that's not 100% theirs. Kanami on lead is the composer and Miku on rhythm guitar is the lyricist. They are at their best live so would recommend something like HATE? live from Yokohama, from their YT channel. No Minnie Mouse headresses here! They are maid headbands with a red rose (miku on rhythm guitar) or blue rose (Saiki on vocals) on them.

The maid costumes are a take-off from the Maid Cafes in Japan. The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing, demure maids vs what you are hearing Hard Rock. They have bees touring Europe and the US and Mexico since 2016.

I've always thought the lead riff of Alone was uncanny too. I didn't really think too much of it until a friend of mine had the same reaction. We both concluded that it must have been something from one of the Tony Hawk games but the best answer we could come up with is a distorted memory of the riff from Papa Roach - Last Resort. These women have such a broad range of bands they draw influence from though, so it really could be anything.
I'm a bit biased but I really do think these ladies deserve to be in the conversation for best actively touring band.
