I LOVED YOUR PRESENTATION! Excellent step by step examples of getting in the right space mentally for a successful follow through!!
Grace thanks so much for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Watch out for 2 more videos on rolling coming in a month or so... James
THANKS!!!
Sea kayak instructor here. I loved what you said about being comfortable in the water. Too many people are terrified of being upside down or swimming. Having the skills and experience to stay calm will save your life
Hey Malcolm thanks for that. Glad you liked it... watch out for the next installment...
James
Great video. Love being on the water kayaking. You probably don't realize, but the term E****o is actually derogatory and shouldn't be used
Hey there that's for watching the video and the feedback. You are right about the single word I used in the video I was not aware it was derogatory. My apologies.
I have cut the video to remove the word. It might take a while to pull through but that has been done.
Thanks for pointing that out and my apologies, I didn't know.
James.
@JamesFleming888 this is part of the problem with trying to learn today. Instead of a simple Eskimo roll we now have to filter through an endless amount of barrel, sweep, storm, backdeck, forward , Greenland, C 2 C... 😅
Thank you for that, the use of the paddle float to test and improve your hip flick is genius. Love all your ideas especially water confidence. Thanks for your help.
Thanks for that, glad you got a few tips. Practice, Practice and practice.
There's also a choice to be had about front deck vs back deck recovery, and thus when to rotate the head and shoulders and the sit up and drive forward stages. All good stuff.
Excellent clip James.
This was sent to me by my coaches (Ben & Mark at Turriff Kayaking Club). This is the one thing missing from my arsenal, a good solid roll. I've got no dramas with a boat capsizing it's just that I'd like to stay in the boat & get it upright again.
My problems normally arise once I'm upside down & my paddles out the water, a lot of it is probably muscle memory & timing related & occasionally position of the left blade (sometimes it slices into the water like a knife).
Will be watching it again before I get in the pool next Friday's club night.
Steven thanks for the feedback. Watch out for some more videos on rolling later this year. One will focus on the fine articles, like avoiding the slicing down of the blade and other tips to better a roll. Another one is the psychology - fight or flight. I'll talk through the fight or flight aspects of rolling and offer some tips to think about. Glad you got something from it.
James
This is absolutely brilliant, so much time must have gone into this.
Very helpful video, I'm also late to kayaking and trying to learn a roll. Thank you for posting this video!
Thanks for the feedback Felicia. I hope you have many happy times whilst boating.
Really enjoyed this vid James. Brand new to Kayaking so this is great to get some tips on how to become more confident and get the simple things right first. Thank you sir.
Hey Derrick, welcome to the sport! You will love it. I'm glad you ended the video, watch out for a couple more coming this year looking at different aspects of rolling in more detail.
Cheers.
James
@@JamesFleming888 Looking forward to it pal. Just subbed so that I can stay up to date. 👍
Some good pointers. Many thanks.
Excellent
Found this very helpful. Great tutorial. Thanx
Very easy to follow and understand, will try it out tomorrow
Let me know how you get on.
What a great video 👍
Thanks for that Robert... there will be a hand rolling video coming out in the next month. Watch for that dropping...
James
Thanks for the video as i'm currently learning to roll. It was very useful to have the slow motion footage together with the narration. Good work.
Thanks for the feedback Debrooker. Glad you got something from it.
This was so much fun to watch. I had a smile on my face the entire length of the video. I really enoyed your voice in the voice over. I liked how you took yourself thru the progression… comfort underwater, float with hip snap, and setting up the paddle. Your final roll in this video looked the most solid, the most organic, the hip snap was practically imperceptible as you were fully rotating, and the paddle really stayed on top of the water and swept away from the boat most effectively. Really great. I’ll watch it again sometime when I want to smile. Cheers from Santa Fe.
Hello to Santa Fe. Glad you had a smile! It made me smile to. I plan to make a sequel on the theory of 'Flight-or-Flight' when it comes to rolling, so watch out for that coming. Cheers, James
Excellent video very informative
Thanks for the feedback Shane.
You did a nice job of making a calming video about something that gives many people a lot of stress-well done. I would like to see a slow motion video, on both sides, from the paddler’s point of view. This would give us a good perspective on what we should be seeing/feeling through every step of the roll, eventually allowing us to pull it all together in one seamless motion.
(Also, I enjoy hearing your voice-it reminds me of my brief time at university in Stirling. 😊)
Thanks for your work! Cheers from the North Carolina coast.
Frank, thanks very much for that. Very kind. I have 2 more videos on rolling in the mix and they will come out later on in the year. One of them will have super slow mo as you have requested, watch out for it.
As for Stirling Uni, it's a couple of miles from me. Glad you had nice memories of Stirling.
James
Hi James, the pushing through of the paddle to strike the water just before the hip flick resonates with me. This makes the difference from a laboured roll to a strong one. I’m still struggling with the sweep roll technique though. Maybe I should just be happy I’ve found something that works. The acid test is in the whitewater when the water is air aireated.
Pete glad you found a tip in there. Yes, the aerated water can be challenging! I'm working on a new video to give further tips in rolling. Part of that will be aerated water. Watch out for that.
@@JamesFleming888 thanks James will do. I’m learning on grade 3 whitewater now, in the pool sessions my roll is almost bombproof, but in the whitewater more 50/50 lol
Great video
Thanks!
Try watching the blade as you sweep to encourage rotation.
Nice tip Gordon.
@@JamesFleming888 liked your Tay video!
I’m late to kayaking and rolling is proving to be difficult for me. I think you’ve help me understand that I need to try and gain confidence by getting into the water and be comfortable even when I’m not in the boat which is difficult for me as I’m not a particularly strong swimmer. Thank you for the pointers.
@@davidegan3650 get on a rescue course a really good fun way to gain confidence
@@paulward248 Thanks I’ll look into that.
Great video, definitely adding a new perspective. I'm impressed how flexible you are to get the paddle up out of the water. I try and look down the blade and have my ear on shoulder when I come up, but I notice it's only working well on one side at the moment although I still come up. Nice one Mr Fleming
I appreciate that!
N1!
Very nice Video. Greetings ronactive
Ron, thanks glad you liked it.
As a solo kayaker iv' never tried to roll, almost drownd a few times, at the hand of others, so rolling was not for me. but the other week kayaking doon the Clyde a big ship and 3 yot's nearly sunk me with the crossover wake. So my question is can you, me ,or anyone practice rolling solo?
Hey, yes individuals can self learn. I have heard tales of people doing this. It is better if you can work with someone such as a coach.
What's the float block your using?
Are they cheap/easily available?
Hey Philip, believe it or not... we have 2 chihuahuas and they had car seats... I know. They had an inflatable inner that I used for the video. That said, a dry bag blown up, swimming floats or other stuff like that would do. Hope this helps. James
I am 66 and want to start kayaking but flipping over and recovering concerns me for I have low back arthritis. Will that prevent me from being able to roll and recover before drowning?
Hey David, you probably want to check this out with your Doctor first 😀 see what they say.
Good luck.
@@JamesFleming888 They encourage me to be active and get exercise, but they knoew little about kayaking.
@@davidlyttle3139 hey, if you link in with a local club and take some lessons, a coach can help and advise you.
If you were to capsize you can also pull your spray deck/skirt to exit your boat. Your mates can then help you get back in from there.
Go along to a club to get more help and info.
Try it David. You don’t have to do whitewater where you will have to roll frequently especially when learning. Although it’s quite possible you may be able to. There’s also touring, where the chances of capsize are far less, and as long as you can exit, and with experienced buddies, there’s nothing to stop you enjoying kayaking. Look for a local club and have a go is my advice
@@MrPistolpete1234 Good advice!
