The beauty of this song.. the reason to me that it is as clever as it is.. is because it treads the line of having both meanings.. literally pot (the plant) or pot (as in the one that called the kettle black), and high (as in high horse) or high (as in being on drugs). The whole thing is a double entendre woven with so many idioms surrounding the main theme of hypocrisy. I do not think I can come up with another song that is as clever as this without seriously reflecting on decades of music to find one.
Thanks! I record directly off the headphone audio, so it’s usually pretty good quality on most of my reactions. I mix in my mic audio on a separate track, so it keeps the video audio cleaner.
I always thought it referenced George W Bush and the invasion of Afghanistan looking for Bin Larsen as an excuse to get the OIL POWER.. Guess I was wrong
the song was about a friend of Maynards who was arrested in Arizona years ago, on Marijuana possession charges, something minor. Turns out, some time later on that year, the judge who presided over the case was arrested on Solicitation and Methamphetamine charges.
I never heard of this I always thought it was about Jimmy Page and his hypocrisy on how all new music is just copied from older music. While he was accused of the same hence the reference to Muddy Waters
@chrisragona3945 I've actually seen a bunch of other people reference this story about the judge also. I'm pretty sure it was in Maricopa County, Arizona but I wasn't 100% sure about the location, so I just put Arizona
@chrisragona3945 all the references to Kangaroo court, liar/lawyer, and even at the end, (Ganja please) refer back to that court case and the hypocrisy that went with it
Haha I could tell they were based around the same theme, so using those context clues made it easier to understand. Can’t believe I couldn’t remember the teapot calling the kettle black saying though.
I’m sure the lawyer was about their lawsuits. Kangaroo is about kangaroo court. And the glasshouse im sure when they played in the glass room at the Scientology place in LA when the opening act was kicked and security went up to Maynard, brandished his weapon and asked Maynard if they were going to have a problem. Maynard ask him if he really wanted to shoot through a glass house then go ahead.
Here for TOOL 🔧 Greatest band ever. Not a single bad song. 🌀 This album released after they had just finished a long court battle with their original label. It's just another idiom as you said. You must have been high...to think or do that.
Remember this song was written back in 2006. At that time, pot was largely illegal in the US. This song is about hypocrisy on that issue from those making / enforcing the laws - lawyers and law makers all used it, but would lock up those of poorer classes for doing the same thing. Ganja please! - You must have been out your mind!
I have not heard a bad song from them. Radio won't touch them, but don't need, since they sellout arenas all over the world and I read each member has net worth in millions. Some good songs I like are The Grudge, The Patient, Eulogy, H, Right in two, 46 and 2, Sober, Undertow, Lateralus, No Quarter cover, Pushit (Salival), any really, imo
@@hecticreaction thanks for the response. There’s a bunch of TOOL songs to discover. Another to add to your list is Right In Two. Another thought provoking song that is also sonically pleasing.
The band puts the music before the lyrics of their songs, which is why they record the vocals lower & seemingly behind the instruments so I know that they would think you're HIGH to keep pausing their songs to analyze the bloody lyrics 😢 They would prefer that be done after enjoying the instrumentation and vibe of the song whole not broken up.
Got it! I will keep that in mind next time. When I listen to it on my own it’s not broken up, but people tend to prefer that for reactions so you can give input throughout.

For sure, great lyrics and concept!
Glad you're here. You've only scratched the surface of many layers. Lateralus and Fear Inoculum LPs go DEEP!
Thank you! I will check them out!
Wow…. You nailed it on this one 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 many reactions miss the actual meaning !!!
“Spiral Out Keep Going “
🔧🌀🌀🌀👁🌀🌀🌀🔧
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Will keep going soon!
This is by far the best audio on a youtube reaction video of this song iv'e heard yet.

I always thought it referenced George W Bush and the invasion of Afghanistan looking for Bin Larsen as an excuse to get the OIL POWER.. Guess I was wrong
Well I think it could be open to many interpretations, only Tool can answer this!
W Bush? He was fighting his daddy’s war. Shit, a few others as well
the song was about a friend of Maynards who was arrested in Arizona years ago, on Marijuana possession charges, something minor. Turns out, some time later on that year, the judge who presided over the case was arrested on Solicitation and Methamphetamine charges.
Wow the irony is crazy
Probably still a judge .. smh

Everyone should be listening to Tool.
I listened to this in the car on the way to work today and it had me in the zone
I’m impressed you understand the meaning of some of the phrases being referenced without actually knowing the phrases.
Haha I could tell they were based around the same theme, so using those context clues made it easier to understand. Can’t believe I couldn’t remember the teapot calling the kettle black saying though.
The pot calling the kettle black represents hypocrisy. That’s the old saying you were searching for ✌️
Thanks! I looked it up after I finished the reaction because it was bothering me that I couldn’t remember 😂
@@hecticreaction This song is from the perspective of the "kettle", talking to the "pot"
Tool. My little secret for years❤
I need to check out more soon!

The 'stank face' at 9:50ish tells the tale.
Hearing this in a car is a whole different vibe, I was zoning to this driving to work on the highway. The instruments just take you there.
@@hecticreaction give Pushit or Right in Two a listen with good headphones.

Got itttt! I guess it can have many meanings, but that’s a good one, specially with the recurring high theme. Thanks for sharing that!
That's just a story useless stoners make up.
This song is about hypocrisy. The laws surrounding the use of pot, while also an area of hypocrisy, is not the specific focus of this song.

Great reaction. The next 2 should be TEMPEST and DESCENDING.
Thank you! I will add Descending to my list, I had Tempest in my queue!

Decending is way better than 7empest IMHO
@@Soljarag5 either one will be a great tune for a newbie to try out for a first time.

Subbed for more Tool please
Will do! Thanks for the sub!
Good job!
Thank you for watching!
Or, people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones😄
Always better 2nd time
That’s pretty much with every tool song. The 10th or 20th time are even better.
💯 their songs are a lot to take in first listen for sure, specially in a reaction. When I jam out to it later, it’s a different vibe.
Great artists/bands can do that! First listen barely scratched the surface.
tool=goat
Their songs are a vibe in the car
Who are you to judge me? Man you must be high.
I can relate 😂
different analogies, it's a way of describing two things that are different but have something in common...
