    Sekiro Shadows Die Twice has been out for over a month, and with a couple of Sekiro playthroughs under my belt, I'm finally ready for a Sekiro review. Or at least I was. There was a decent constructive (and not so constructive) pushback to my recent 10 Things I Hate: Sekiro video, so today we'll take a look at each section and respond to some comments.
    I'll still be doing a video for all the things I love about Sekiro, so look forward to that.
    I hope you enjoy the video, and if you do, be sure to subscribe for the second half of my Sekiro review, check out my Sekiro boss rankings, and other great gaming content!

    I enjoyed the story telling, particularly with respect to characters. At first, Owl seemed like a generic villain with a simple motive. The details in the memories and dialogue (after delivering the final death blows) makes me respect him so much more. Owl is a man who wants to rule Japan, but much more wants to see his adopted son grow. He desires intense battles with Sekiro and has done everything to nurture a fierce rivalry. His priorities come first, but he doesn’t mind losing if it is his son that gets the better of him. I would love to be able to explore this relationship further. I have no complaints with subtle story telling and leaving things to the imagination.

      People understand what they want to understand when it comes to the types of comments he mentions at the beginning in the video. It’s akin to selective listening, in my opinion.
      For example, someone who didn’t struggle at all with the terror mechanic may hear perfectly reasonable critiques of the terror mechanic, but all they get out of it is “The terror mechanic sucks because I died a lot to it”, so they feel the need to put in their pride-full two-cents regarding how they had no trouble with this mechanic and how ‘easy’ it is to deal with.

    • @littlemoth4956
      @littlemoth4956 4 года назад +2

      @@Benjo9991 That's because most people will obviously want to remove things they find difficult. Not just in games, but in life. I think the same is the case here, were Dmod hates terror and grabs, which stops he flow of combat. However, these are put in place so that the combat isn't ended in half a minute, and you can't just wail and deflect enemies for that entire time.

    *Grabs:* Dodging, then smacking the opponent with your sword is a direct counter to grabs. That said, I understand your opinion and don't have strong feelings either way.
    *Terror:* I'd love to see the Headless' terror build-up reduced by a bit, but I think Terror itself shouldn't be removed. Even on subsequent playthroughs facing off against a Headless still makes me feel terrified, which is great!
    *Spirit Emblems:* I'm one of the people that has 999 SEs; don't think I did anything special to get that much.
    SEs in the outer world are mostly used as markers, so removing them isn't an option, and making you auto-gain them on 'resting' contradicts their lore, though, so idk, make them drop more often?
    *Tutorial Pop-ups:* Ability to disable them during first playthrough is no good, there's gonna be a lot more confused people that way. They don't pop up during subsequent playthroughs, except for item pop-ups. An option to disable item pop-ups after finishing the game would be nice, I guess.
    *Sounds:* If you make every single sound controllable, then maybe make the brightness of every location controllable, or be able to set graphical settings for each location. This can go on forever, so where do we stop? I feel like making every sound controllable is a bit overboard, and those that _do_ want to change them can poke the modding community, they're usually happy to help. Also I think saying that the sound mod is popular because it's in the top 50 is disingenuous. It barely has any views and DLs compared to the popular ones, and is outclassed even by multiple meme, and niche mods.
    *Story:* Saying that it is hard to get the story from sake because you need to search for it, while at the same time complementing previous FromSoft games in which you needed to search for things that were hard to get to learn any story at all... Not sure I can accept that point.
    I feel like the addition of cinematics may have confuddled you a bit. It's still the same formula: if you don't pay attention, and read descriptions you'll miss a lot of the story. And that's not a good/bad thing, it's just a way of storytelling.
    When compared to previous FromSoft titles, I feel like there's less "off topic" descriptions. Nearly everything is directly related to you, your quest, and/or those that you meet on it. I think that's not a good/bad thing, either. Having scoured every bit of text and dialogue, like I have in previous FromSoft games, I can say that my enjoyment is around the same level. After we get some DLCs, depending on their quality, Sekiro may actually become my favorite FromSoft game, in terms of how much I like the lore.

    This sounds weird, but I kinda wish Terror was revamped where instead of instakilling you, it stuns you and you can't attack and you move slowly for like 10 or so seconds, leaving you vulnerable to painful attacks. That would make the stat feel more threatening compared to the potential doom of losing a Resurrection.

      @honestysrevival1 5 лет назад +7

      That would make it feel more like terror and make it a status effect that directly broke up how combat works by disabling your deflects and forcing you to play passively for a while, which is much better than an instant-kill bullshit status any day of the week.
      Terror isn't a status. It's a second health bar. It's like how in Star Ocean games characters can die if they run out of HP or MP and you have to keep track of both, but much less well-implemented.
      Make my character feel terrified if you're gonna call it terror. Make them move more slowly toward enemies, make my block less effective because my character's technique is getting sloppy, make my attack windups either slower or have awkward animations, do something to convey to me that my character is scared with the mechanics, don't just instantly murder me. Hell, even making the enemies seem bigger or alternating the rhythm of their attacks/giving their attacks stuttery after images because our character is too scared to pay proper attention would make sense.
      If they wanted to convey something like "terror is the death of the soul" or whatever they're going for here, then it shouldn't be called terror. Make it a "soul" bar or tie it to dragonrot somehow. Maybe your ability to resurrect is removed if your soul falters and that's what they're attacking. Maybe terror is a magical status that is simply bringing you back down to what you really are - a small, scared man who is in over his head and should have died many times over by this point.
      There are plenty of ways that terror could have been made to be more terrifying other than "it gon kil u".

    • @Sam-cu3fn
      @Sam-cu3fn 5 лет назад +2

      Ethan Honestly anything that the player can see only while terrified would make more sense to me than how it’s currently implemented, even if it were to add thick fog where you can’t see the enemy until he’s like within a 5-10 meter radius or something makes more sense.

  • @DarthFennec

    If you're running too low on spirit emblems, one option you always have is the Ceremonial Tanto. Gives you five emblems and takes half your health, which you can replenish with an estus, which is free unless you really need it later. This isn't ideal, but it can be helpful in certain situations, and it doesn't require any kind of farming or use of "true" consumables (only the estus, which regenerates upon rest).

      This item came in clutch for both Guardian Ape fights. The umbrella was my best counter to the scream, allowing me to use it to position myself right behind dat ass, and sacrificing half a healthbar in a game that allows you to resurrect was a small price for those spirit emblems.

    About grabs: you can actually use the mist raven feather to dodge them easier, "block" them with any of the loaded umbrellas (which is my favourite way to deal with them), or you can even cancel them with firecrackers if you're fast enough. I'm sure there are more prosthetics or even combat arts that let you deal with grabs too.

    I personally wish Spirit Emblems worked more like Estus/Gourds. Basically you have an infinite pool of them in "Storage" but can only have 20 on your person at a time. So resting gives you 20 to use as you progress, but can always get those 20 back by popping a squat at the idol. This way you get to keep the limited uses of the prosthetic tools without basically taking them away until the player farms.

    Personal theory about why Spirit Emblems are consumable. You aren't meant to run out of them, UNLESS, you rely on ninjas tools and special moves for EVERYTHING. Giving you a cap limits your exploration, but prevents you from just getting 500 and killing the demon of hatred with kunai alone, but it would also make them something you couldn't really use during exploration, except that roughly 60% of enemies will drop 1 or more. I think its meant to allow you to rely on them as a tool in exploration, without giving you the option to crutch them in boss battles.

    I actually really like some aspects of terror, primarily in the design of the headless. While I find it extremely annoying that headless require 2 items to even attempt fighting them, with one being one of the most useful items in the game, the way you have to play when fighting them is absolutely perfect. Headless are terrifying, both visually and in gameplay. Their slowing effect forces you to move frantically, their unique difficult to predict attacks shatter any shred of confidence you may otherwise have, terror means that while deflecting is an option you are constantly forced to mix it up, and their insta kill grab means you can never truly feel safe. Certainly not mechanics you would want to have permeating a game, but fighting them is totally unique and immersing and I was glad to see it several times throughout the game. On the other hand, I can say almost nothing positive about the shichimen warriors they're just awful. Like why, this is a rhythm game not a bullet hell. I guess being able to deflect the spooky laser is kinda cool but that's it. they're not even that scary just annoying.

    first off. sekiro is in my top alltime favorite games along with Fromsoft's other games regardless of my below response.
    Sound - would love to be able to change the sound levels. or even if they would patch the sounds to be more normalized with the rest of the game. sword sounds are awesome. but the deathblows are loud. my wife complains about the noise of them when im playing i also have ear problems which prevent me from wearing headphones(or anything that touches my ears or inserted) for any amount of time. having a slider that i could turn those down would be great.
    Story - im torn on the story. it feels inconsistent stuck between cinematic and bread crumbs like past Fromsoft games. for me it removed the mystery of the game somewhat...not totally but i am way less interested in the story of sekiro. yet i still play soulsborne games just to run around and find objects or locations i have not yet read or really put thought into. and every playthrough feels like a new adventure. unless im going for a specific challenge or run, i really don't know what my character is going to turn into by the end. Sekiro i know when i start im going to be fighting a losing battle(hand chop) no matter how good i am because...predetermined story. i know pretty much what equipment and items(with some exceptions) i will have before fighting each boss...regardless of my path through the game.
    Dragonrot - Cool for the story. gives consequences to your failures. however i don't like the implementation. can't tell you how i would fix it(i did kinda like your idea) my first playthrough i made it well past the half point of the game(didnt know at the time of course) with no dragonrot despite dieing many times.. 2nd playthrough felt like npc's were getting sick after every death. but even with that...i didnt care. someone gets dragonrot? oh well...don't have to worry about them anymore until i want to do their quest. once you figure out that there is really no consequences then it just becomes an annoyance to deal with occasionally which is the worst sort of "punishment"
    Grabs - grabs suck. it's not about dodging. or jumping back 3 times. or any such thing. sometimes you get grabbed even when you dodge perfectly. i have in multiple occasions dodged successfully, even behind the enemy. yet ill teleport 10 feet back into the grab somehow. my first playthrough was super painful trying to fight the ogre. ultimately i figure out i could simply jump up and it would miss even though it looks like a better grab. beside dashing to the side or trying to get behind him. but it felt cheaty to me. i didn't feel like i was fighting fair. i felt like i found a weakness in the AI and was exploiting it. having a counter. even if it takes precise inputs and skill would be great. cause at the moment when a grab is about to happen. it's just panic mode to try and get away and pray that you don't get teleported.
    Items - im sure this is not the norm for most people. but for me i am notoriously bad at using consumables. i never remember them. and if i do remember i have something that would help with a fight. makes me not want to use it that much more because i want to try and beat it without using it. i usually try and collect every shiny i see. but i almost never use the items i pick up. for me picking up the 100th ash or ceramic shard gets old.
    Spirit Emblems - i had a similar experience to you. first played through most of the game conserving my spirit emblems because they felt so rare. buying them felt like a waste of money. and very often i would run out. even worst after a few attempts at lady butterfly i had ran out completely and had to go farming for them and money to buy them to then go back and attempt again. eventually i gave up on the farming and just fought her directly. which was fun in the end and i eventually took her down after many attempts. after that i just gave up on using my prosthetics unless i felt really confident that it would not be wasted.
    2nd playthrough knowing they were hard to come by. i would buy them with any extra money i had after purchasing any large items. had a large pile of them by lady butterfly...she went down much easier that time though since i already knew how to beat her without using shurikens.
    Ledge Mechanics/Grapple Points - maybe im just bad at grabbing ledges. but there are many locations where sekiro will just not grab the ledge sometimes. most notable place for me is the shrine before the ogre. i have more trouble getting up there sometimes than any other place in the game. big dangerous jumps seem fine. but simple jumps seam to be iffy sometimes(not always). as well as grappling to some branches when jumping. i have fallen quite a few times while leaping to a grapple point because the node just never activates even though im well within range and should be a simple jump.
    im sure if i sat here i could think of other points. but this has gotten way longer than i expected :D
    thanks for the videos!

  • @rohiogerv22
    @rohiogerv22 4 года назад +1

    What even is the point of grabs in FromSoftware games' combat? An attack where the hitbox never looks right, most conventional means of reaction don't work, if it touches you you're probably OHKO (especially in Souls games) or severely damaged without recourse, and the actual damage is delayed for some enemy showboating.
    There's not a single thing that makes me feel like I'm wasting my time playing a FromSoftware game more than being grabbed. I don't care if they're avoidable, or EZ, or fair. They're not fun. Successfully avoiding them isn't fun, it's just a baseline for not succumbing to rage. Just add more OHKO attacks with accurate hitboxes and get rid of the grabs. For real.

    The reason for why Spirit Emblems are consumable is this:
    You have a set ammount to work with between idols, if you spam things that uses them you run out, but if you are crowd hunting, instead of bossing, you get some of them back with each kill, so you can continue using them, the idea is that you have to ration them to keep up with the feedback of killing enemies but when you are bossing you just run out so you cant spam tools that may break the fight. That's called Strategy

    I keep hearing, that you an counter grabs. Just not block. Like the blue attacks in God of War. So there is a way of dealing with grabs and it's a consistent theme with piercing and sweeping attacks: All three of them show a warning. All three can't be blocked. So you need to identify which one of the three it is to either Mikiri a pierce, jump over a sweep or parry a grab. However, parrying the grab is the only one which requires perfect timing. Which is also harder to make out for grab-animations. So I always just run or dodge away from grabs. (Jumping isn't consistent enough)
    So I haven't tried it for every type of enemy yet, to confirm that myself.

    In response to terror and grabs being an issue because you have to run away: it’s fundamentally true in martialism or martial arts that sometimes it’s necessary to retreat where no aggression, counter, or stalwart defense will suffice in its place. Old sensei used to say, “if you don’t want to get hit, don’t be there.”
    That said, it’s a video game, running away isn’t much fun. Understood. But it does increase difficulty and add a break in rhythm which this particularly rhythmic game may have needed.
    Ultimately, I agree that the mechanic of terror could be improved, instant death is a steep punishment for status build-up. But, I honestly believe that when it comes to grabs, the answer is git gud.

    The Terror mechanic is a way of encouraging you to deflect instead of holding the block button. If you deflect a terror attack, you won't get the terror. In the video where you fought the Shichimen warrior, you can deflect his long-range beam to negate the terror as well as the damage.
    As for the grabs, the person who commented saying that grab counter should be an ability deep in the Senpou martial arts tree made an interesting point. Although I'm not sure how I feel about Sekiro becoming a judo expert :)

    Fyi, Praying Strikes: Exorcism is the counter to grabs. It can blast through hyper armor but if you time it poorly it can backfire. Luckily, it's way faster than a grab so the main issue is your own reaction time, and the fact that it's a combat art rather than a latent/passive skill like mikiri counter. It works for charge up attacks like Genichiro's mortal draw and Isshin's dragon slash as well.

    they should have made attacking normally counter the grab. then the three major combat techniques would have been used: Dashing for thrusts, jumps for swipes and attacks for grabs. currently attacking doesnt actually do too much against the enemy directly (aside from actually damaging them)

    I’m currently dealing with an issue that I hadn’t noticed before. If you obey the Iron Code for your first run, then your 2nd run is WAY harder.
    It has to do with not having as many boss memories under your belt as the game expects. And you don’t get a chance to get all pieces of the dragon mask if you obey the Iron Code.
    It had me soft-locked for a while, being stuck between the raging bull and lady butterfly.

    On the spirit emblems, I ended the game with like around 999. But that was because the scarcity in the beginning conditioned me to mostly save their usage to bosses. In the beginning, when I didn't have many I did run out, even when I just used them on bosses (since I died a lot). But by the end of the game, when I had mostly learned how to deal with enemies without needing to use tools, and was running through some areas to get some money/items/xp for some end game prep, I eventually ended with way too many. It's kind of how the early scarcity made a seemingly limited resource kinda grow into an overbabnundant one, kind of similar to have many players end JRPGs with an overanundance of high level healing items.
    So yeah, I agree on that they should have just been a resource you get back all uses of when you rest

    Honestly when it comes to annoyances in the game the biggest ones for me are 1) For most of the playthrough you can't buy any of actually useful items and need to farm for them, they either aren't sold, sold in limited stock, or Anayama dies and takes your sugars with him. 2) the load times when you die to a boss, it makes it tedious to refight them if you're stuck on a difficult one like the Ape or Isshin because it takes a minute or so for everything to reset even though resting to reset enemies goes by almost instantly. 3) That revives are consumed after use, this does nothing to increase the difficulty it just means that if you die after reviving to the boss you now need to go spend 5 minutes grinding. 2 of these just exist to make the game grindy without even the benefit of normal Souls leveling where you could increase your stats to give some feeling of worth to it and all of them just useless drag out the game's run time longer than it needs to be.

    Just had a great idea for the terror mechanic.... What if if the terror bar fills up, the Parry timing changes?
    For example u have to initiate the parry a moment before u usually would, because ur character is so terrified that he reacts slower to ur inputs.
    This would mean that in a fight with headless, u would have to change between normal parry timing and terror parry timing on the flow, making it more mechanically challenging Instead of the cheap attempt at difficulty it currently is.
    This is similar to the thing that owl does where he bans u from using ur Gourd.... That was a great mechanic...

    fun fact for the Headless Ape's AOE Scream, well it worked for me when i tested it multiple times, the scream has a range dependent on the direction you are facing the Ape. Ex. If he starts his scream and you are head up with him, directly in front you and you run directly back to escape you still take massive terror status damage, and health. But, if you cut to the side and run directly away from either of his arms it lessens, and then lessens even more when you run directly behind him and away. Like i said idk if this is full proof but in my runs it worked for me.

    My #1 complaint is that there are so few endings to the game and I think there should be more. For example one where kuro AND wolf survive and the divine heir requests that wolf accompanies him on one journey to return the dragons heritage to the west and kuro gets the second mortal blade.
    And #2, I know this is tiny but there should be a different version to the divine dragon fight where after you massacre the little ones you can speak with the dragon and there are two lines of dialogue. One line will lead to a fight and the other will lead to the dragon giving his tears willingly and each option has its on benefits. Getting his tears willingly will give you a 5% higher chance for unseen aid as well as a resource that you can use on any one of the prosthetic tools for a final upgrade. Whilst the fight will give you a prayer bead necklace and memory.

    grabs' counter is basically just dodge and attack. They're usually one of the few opportunities to get vitality damage in, which is rather valuable as most lategame bosses will nearly always block and deflect.

      Very good point I didn't mention in the video. The "punish" I'm asking for does exist because most of the time you can hit their back for vitality damage. I still want a direct counter, but what's there does work

    • @BigDBrian
      @BigDBrian 5 лет назад

      @@theDeModcracy Yeah I get what you'd like, personally I don't mind grabs in this game, and don't think they really disturb the flow of combat enough to justify a direct, special counter.
      At most I would like to have a skill that increases vitality damage when you hit an enemy during their grab attack recovery.
      Something like double damage for one hit. It wouldn't change any mechanics, just settle into the player's mind that that's what they should be doing and slightly reward it.
      The game could use more diverse skills in its skill trees to begin with. Most of the interesting ones aren't important, and most of the important ones aren't interesting. The only exception is mikiri counter, which I'm pretty sure they put into a skill tree just so they wouldn't overwhelm players with options early.

    I think it's worth noting that Genichiro's grab attack *can* actually be countered, which is *highly* unusual. Most enemies will gain MASSIVE hyper armor during the startup animation for their grab, able to tank several attacks with their face without flinching. Genichiro (and most enemies with grabs, for that matter) *puts his weapon away* to perform his grab attack, which leaves him wide open. If you attack him as he runs towards you, he'll be forced to draw his weapon suddenly to defend himself, which knocks him off balance. There's even a unique animation for it, and it's really nice looking.
    This *alone* is enough to fix a large majority of the grabs in the game. Players will run away from grabs while learning the animation, but as they become more familiar with the fight, will come to realize that these grab attacks are massive openings in the enemy's defense, providing a perfect opportunity for a counter attack that leaves them scrambling to recover their positioning. I'm not sure why this mechanic wasn't echoed in Emma or Isshin's grab attacks.

    3 years late as I'm just getting into the "souls-like" series because of Elden Ring but accessibility settings like audio mixing in video games should definitely be considered. But there are so many things game devs are still testing. Hopefully one day we'll be there.

    I agree with terror being an unneccessary nuisance 100%, it's completely out of place. In my current playthrough I wanted to see how far I could get without triggering Resurrection to activate, and I made it pretty far until a Shichimen Warrior terror killed me through a wall. I was so mad

    What would be great for Dragon Rot is making it to it only shows up if you die after reviving. and to counter the fact that the chance of that happening is largely decreased you can make the chance of dragon rot showing up when you die increase.

    I discovered you through your DS Boss rankings, and enjoyed your style. Even if I haven't played any Myazaki games, I find them really interesting, and people have always a lot to say about them, which is, in itself, even more interesting. But this video made me suscribe to you, I really enjoy the nuances and the thought process you're showing, conviction but with self-awareness.
