"It seemed like a good idea at the time. But soon, the world was overrun. A technological singularity caused by infinitely self-replicating Christmas ornaments."
but they get infinitely small
This sounds like a really dumb SCP

day 27: the air now has plastic in it.
America, in attempts to solve the problem, nuked as many ornaments as they could, killing themselves and Canada in the process from suffocation
ANYONE ELS THINK THE TITLE WAS JUST CLICK BAIT ??? I did but I was happily WRONG this is absolutely amazing !!! U are a genius ! Absolutely amazed u pulled it off! Keep up the amazing work!
I've heard this a few times now. I wonder if a lot of people think its click bait and then they don't watch the video!
I hope not! Lol I guess that’s what happens when ur building unthinkable things! It sounds too good to be true lol the thumbnail def helped me click cuz u clearly see a reasonable size 3d print , I kinda thought it was just click bait cuz when I read 3d printer I immediately thought of FDM printing cuz Iv never herd of anyone building a sla printer , I thought it is impossible to build a fdm printer that small lol
I didn't get much sleep the last two days, but it works! I'm going to keep working away on this project but in a different form factor.
All my best to you Sean!
Worth it !! Thank you very much!
I don't get much sleep either. Not that I do anything productive though.
@@aredditchanneltopissoffapa6940 Why do you feel that you're not doing anything productive? Are you bored or just going through one of those phases? I'm genuinely curious and interested. I hope you will reply.
@@mccc4559 Holy, didn't expect a response. Haha, thanks a bunch for your concern, but don't worry I'm alright. Just an angsty genZ boi bored on holiday. Nothing beyond normal moods. :)
Dude. This is the best project I have seen all year! I hope you get some good traction from this, you deserve it! I can't wait to try to make a DIY SLA printer, let along a friggin tree hanging one! :D
I would have thought more tech sites would have written posts about it! But it’s still going well on it’s own.
@@SeanHodgins seems like a no brainier for hackaday and the like. Either way, this project is all I have been thinking about you this morning. Can't wait to try my hand as my own SLA. Haha. Best of luck good sir.
Geeksmithing haha thanks! Hackaday did cover it, they’re good about that, one of the firsts!
Hackster.io also covered it :) I saw it first on there and then found it on RUclips
W.I.C.K.E.D Sean! Simply an amazing feat in just 2 weeks and having never seen, touched or used an SLA printer before. Super inspiring!
Thanks! Its a good starting point for the actual printer I want to design. I'm glad I didn't have to call this one a fail.
My mind was continuously blown throughout the duration of this video. Subbed.
W.I.C.K.E.D. = World in catastrophe, killzone experiment department
Duuude...this is some next level stuff even for you! Thank you and Happy Holidays!
I can not describe how badly I want one of these !!
Suggestion. try CLEAR resin. its a lot easier to cure with short weak bursts of light!
That makes sense! I wanted A Christmas color but I’ll definitely try that now. Thanks for the tip.
I've been into 3d printing for a few years now, even built a few of my own. I'm far from an expert, but I've become a bit jaded - not many of these " I 3d printed whatever" kind of videos impress me anymore.
This video impressed me. A lot. Nice job my friend, nice job indeed.
Thank you! I don't like doing large 3D printed projects because they tent to take a long time when there are issues with printing(had a few myself), but this one managed to work out in the end.
This should have ten million views.
Share it with all of your friends and family!
Haha. I could tell you were really surprised and proud of yourself when it actually worked, as you should be. That's awesome. I wish you put out more videos regularly because I love little project videos like yours. But, at the same time, I'm glad you don't because when you do put out a video, they're always something really cool. Quality>quantity. Probably 1/3 of my "I really want to make this, but will probably never have time to. But I'll save it anyway just in case" project list are things you've made on your channel.
Thanks! I was really surprised when the prints starter sticking to the build plate. I wish I could put out more! I think I put out more projects this year than any others though.
Wow. What a concept.
My brain conjures up some weird things on occasion.
I COULD USE A LITTLE FUEL MYSELF AND WE COULD ALL USE A LITTLE CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGE
Wow
Seriously considering becoming one of the patreons! This was the first of your vids I saw! You've earned my subscription!
Your projects really keep impressing me and wanting me to make stuff like this as well. You're one of the only youtubers that creates projects and really finishes it with all details needed, not just on a breadboard (you almost always 3D print, create a PCB, etc) and I really love that! Keep going Sean!
Thank you! I try to incorporate all of the tools I have at my disposal, brings the project together much better.
Incredible project to work on Sean! Amazing work!!! Can't wait to see where you go with this!
Thanks Stephen!
one of the best channels on youtube! you deserve more subs
Thank you!
Cool project! You did a great job, especially considering this is just the first pass! I am looking forward to seeing the future iterations. Subscribed.
Thank you. Now that this worked I’m really motivated to get working on a more robust design.
Great job on the build !
Totally awesome work! Hyped to see what you make of the open source sla printers. I may have to make one for myself
Wow! That's super killer! You built a miniature 3D printer that works! :-) great job dude! Happy holidays to you and yours! :-)
I can't believe it myself! Thank you!
you should make this in a box, and put it up on Kickstarter, as world's smallest 3d PRINTER! !!
Just wait. ;)
A junkyard SLA setup, don't see that every day
It'd be cool to see a follow up to this next year with an updated design
The next design will likely be out of aluminum, and not in the shape of an ornament. :D
Dude, great job! This is one of the cooler projects I've seen.
This was mind-blowingly-awesome!
This is amazing! You're an amazing badass! I just learned SO much about SLA printers. THANK YOU!
Nicely done, really cool idea
'Wait there's only one stepper?' 'Oh.....it's SLA...?!?'
Bro, you are awesome! Hello from Russia. Even here heard about your great invention.
Hello from Canada! Great to see it reaching all over.
Wow you must be so smart, love the video and idea !
Dude that's so cool, well done man!
This has been so inspiring, I'm subbing!
Really cool! I might attempt at making a sla printer now
I agree, amazing!
There is hope! This is actually a really cool idea. Love it!
Very cool project! I may have misunderstood, but it seemed like you would run the build plate down until the stepper stalled and then move up a couple steps and repeated for every layer. If the motor truly is a stepper you should only have to "Crash-Home" on the first layer. Regular 3D printers don't touch off on the endstops, you shouldn't need to in this case either. Hopefully this helps the squishing. As for prints failing because they stick too well to the bed, a lot of the higher end machines have tilt/slide/wipe mechanisms to help gradually break the connection between the screen and the print. Perhaps you could make your resin vat hinged so that as the build plate lifts, the vat tips slightly to break the adhesion from one edge towards the other.
You’re not wrong about the stepper. That was the original plan, to have it just count up x steps then down x-1 steps. However when it came to reality some prints would hold on strong enough that it would skip steps on the bed lifting and peeling process, so it would lose its position, so like I said in the video “had to get creative” with it haha - I have plans for a tiny bed tilt operation that I need to work out.
I Rarely post on RUclips, but I had too on this one. I must say, that is an amazing job you have done with this SLA attempt! I have been in the FDM world for a few years and I actually don't want a commercially available SLA printer. I just keep designing parts and upgrades for FDM. But SLA does intrigue me greatly! As per usual I watch one of these types of videos and start thinking about what parts to buy/get so I can make one. But since Christmas was yesterday I will hold off until another form factor is presented (by you, lol). Amazing job! I will more than likely build one of these just to learn. Sub'd to your channel as well. Thank you for sharing this with the world!
Thanks for your comment! I’m fairly motivated to make an improved version now that I know I can do it. So expect to see some things surface soon.
This is such an awesome idea. You've done such a great job and I can't wait to see what comes next.
SUBBED!!
That’s genius, well done!
dude, this channel is gonna explode if you keep this up
I don’t know if the next couple of projects will be this awesome, but we’ll see!
Merry Christmas! Awesome Job! Really looking forward to seeing more SLA progress. P.S. what is that space you we're working out of? Looks really cool
Former employer's awesome workshop. They just moved in to that place recently though.
Jesus... That's the first impressive thing I have ever seen that incorporates a 3D printer... Damn good job man!
Thanks! I’m glad it didn’t end up being a waste of two weeks of my time.
@@SeanHodgins Oh no, 11/10.
I'm an aerospace engineer, and this blew my freakin' mind.
Such an underrated chanel !!!!
Yup. Amazing. Absolutely amazing. Great job man!!!
That is so uh, uh,...............It's just just............Ok I don't have words to properly express how totally awesome this is. Great job!!!!!
Lol. This is awesome. Nice work and merry Xmas!
Thanks!
Im not entirely sure, but i think i know how you can increase your z axis resolution. Between the screen and the reservoir, insert 2 polarising lenses, like in sunglasses. Make sure the direction of polarization in the lenses are perpendicular, and that should only allow light to go through in a uniform direction, instead of scattered like they are now. Think laser vs floodlight.
Dude that's really cool!
Absolutely incredible
Absolutely ingenious! I'm so amazed -- congratulations, you rock! Just subbed! Thanks for the vid and happy new year!
dude you are a genius
Love it!
Thanks John!
That's crazy dude :) Good Job!
Thanks!
You sir. Are amazing, I've subscribed keep it up
I love this. I have an old 3d printer controller based on the 1284p and I have been hacking away today to make my own firmware for a variation on this. Just got it to read some bitmaps from the onboard SD slot and display it on a 1.8" tft and tomorrow I'll get some steppers moving for the z axis and maybe a vat wiper, add a 2004lcd controller and hope it works ok. if it's fun enough I might do something with a 14" 1080p monitor and a raspberry pi I have kicking around the junk drawer
Sounds like a fun project!
This is super impressive. Great job!
Thank you!
In a word WOW----- subscription earned!!!!! AMAZING!!!!
This is amazing!
Holy freaking crap! That's so cool!!! Well done!
Brilliant
That's brilliant, Sean! Masterfully executed, as always. Thanks for sharing this cool project, and I can't wait to follow along as you develop the "real" SLA printer!!
Thanks, may take a few days to relax first! :)
You are a genius
Thats sooooo cool i want to make one now but BIGGER!!!!
6:10 to see the thing actually working
Now for a full version!
Working on it!
Dude. You are a fucking genius. How in the world did you come up with the LED and UV backlight combination???
I'm really impressed by this - I think the mechanisms used for the DLP printing was really cool with the LCD screen masking and the overall concept. I'm impressed it works - feels really original.
Good job! Merry Christmas as well
Lots of the low cost SLA printers use this technique I believe. I think its being called MSLA. When I discovered it, I didn't think it was possible to make it work so well. As bad as my prints were, there is so much room for improvement, which I love.
Okay that was cool! And ya know there is always the Christmas miracle. So that's how your cool lil printer worked. Merry Christmas and Happy new year.
Haha I hope It wasn’t wasted on this! Thank you!
@@SeanHodgins Your welccome, and it was cool. So I think it wasn't wasted.
What did you use for the build platform? Is that just a small piece of aluminum? Love the build, I'm planning a scaled up version because why not, hence the question
Yeah I forgot to mention it in the video I think, I super glued on a piece of 1/8” aluminum flat bar that I just cut to length, onto the bottom of the PLA build plate I printed. Drilled a few holes in it to allow the fluid to flow easier.
@@SeanHodgins Excellent, I've always wondered if this would work but I've just never taken the time to design and print everything, now at least i know it's not impossible! In fact it's damn easy, lol, thanks for the great build
you can then create A Christmas Ornament that 3D Prints Christmas Ornaments which can print 3D Printed things!
Thats version 2!
I saw many genius thinks but this is at the top building a 3d printer out of scrap
You are a seriously underrated youtuber!
*Ornamentception* Illuminati confirmed 😂
I’ve been using this as a hashtag on twitter!
@@SeanHodgins Hahaha! yay! love it 😂
Fantastic!
Thanks!
So you're the first guy i've ever seen use a dvd drive to make a 3d printer and it's fucking SLA
you got a sub from me man i plan too see about playing with that idea that looks fun.
It is fun, not overly complicated if you give yourself more than a couple weeks to finish haha
@@SeanHodgins it seems rather strait forward and verry true . i was thinking maby i could wind up make one using my old 5$ monitors i found at good willl too make the display for making the prints with.
Mate, this and you are super cute 😂 freakin' loved it. Really fun, well done.
Holy Cow Sean! Do you ever sleep?! Between the collab with Mark Rober, building stuff for Tindie and your Kickstarters, you've SUCCESSFULLY build your own SLA printer!? Color me impressed.
The last two days has me questioning the sleep thing. But I'm usually pretty good about it. Thank you!
RUclips threw this up on my homepage... Already subscribed prior. Sean, every time I open one of your videos, blown away. This was just OUT THERE! LOL, the icing on the cake is you just as excited as the idea unfolds in your head and in reality. Great stuff man. Great stuff.
Too cool! Also, good call on the low expectations. If you aim for the horizon, you can still end up in orbit
Totally floored man! That was nerd beast mode my man. Stand tall, I've seen multi million dollar careers spring from MUCH less, and seen RUclipsr channels go from 0 mph to C² over videos like this.
Sean, this is awesome. Check out my 1 of 3 videos I posted ages ago on a 3d printer. I made using a CD laser tray. Pretty amazing job on the printer dude. Amazing.
Watching this on Xmas morning in New Zealand!
Midnight Christmas Eve exactly at the time of writing this!
You look amazingly proud of yourself...and you should be. That's god damn ridiculously amazing. Well done.
Best “meta” ever.
I've got a anycubic resin 3d printer and with how many issues I've had with it I'm damned impressed. Btw idk what resin ur using but the resin my anycubic uses is "toxic" and they suggest wearing gloves
This is amazing, absolutely incredible, I subbed and I'll definitely be around, keep up the brilliance!
Bro this is amazing! Have u uploaded it to Thingiverse yet? I do the featured best of the week collections or BOW and I would love for this thing to be in there. Message me on Thingiverse and I’ll see what I can do to get this in the featured spotlight on the top of the page as well!
Technology is upgrading itself...
Don’t say I didn’t warn you
Saw this on instructables lol
Nice!
You built a Santa clause machine
i would actually love if you could get some traction with the community in getting this open source sla thing to work? maybe have some of the bigger guys help you in some way if that was possible ? ill see what i can do if you dont mind, and happy holidays
Great presentation; now I don’t have to wonder how small these machines can be built, Thanks!
Does anyone else have their mind blown when you realize that there are actually truly smart and creative people out there? Awesome and interesting video👏🏽
Hi, i really like your videos and i'm wondering, wich code 'languages' do you speak?
Very cool! Now you need a 3d printed death star 3d printer :-) got a sub from me on this one.
Ah, that is a stellar idea, hold on while I email Disney. A Death Star that 3D prints storm troopers.
I think you're a true genius and i think you should work for Elon musk he needs someone like you. that's if you like Elon
Its actually a DLP printer. Sla uses 2 lasers, which is ehere thr stereo in sla comes from.
At first I was like "how the fuck is he going to fit an FDM in that?", as soon as i saw one motor and an LCD i knew what you were up to.
Alot of people argue that LCD printers are not DLP, but what is an LCD screen doing? Its projecting digital light.
I’m fairly certain all laser based SLA printers have a single laser. I’ve heard this type (using the lcd) is being referred to as MSLA, as in masking stereolithography printing. If I had to guess, the stereo comes from the fact it’s in the 3rd dimension, instead of just “lithograph” which is a two dimensional print. But lithography does not pertain to lasers at all. In fact lithography is just about printing in a way that involves stopping the ink (or whatever your printing) from going to certain areas, whether that is using chemicals to stop the ink from spreading, or using a mask(like in etching PCBs) to stop UV light from affecting certain parts.
I like the term MSLA, it’s the most to the point for this type of printing.
you might want to add a diffusion layer behind the screen, or else you'll get spots that are more illuminated than the rest.
That’s so cool man! I wish I could make something like that. Can’t wait to see more!
You should put a small weak piston with a sharp top edge to dispense the printed ornaments, also very impressive
That so dope
Another great vid! I want to go make an SLA printer now! 😊
