First night in care for the twin flying-foxes: Velcro and Klingon

- Somehow I forgot to upload this video in sequence. This was Velcro and Klingon on their first night in care.
Velcro and Klingon are Grey-Headed Flying-Fox twins who came into care when their mum hit her head and knocked herself silly.
Mum Riki is in care and doing well but is unable to care for her babies so they've been removed till she is well enough to take them back.
Riki is improving so we're hoping the reunion can occur in a few days.
Velcro is very young but doing amazingly well.
Klingon is doing well and growing on schedule.
Twins aren't common in rescues. We don't know how common twin births are in the wild. We do occasionally see mums with a baby under each wing in the early part of the season, but they can't fly with growing babies who will weigh up to half their bodyweight by the time the babies are thermoregulating and able to be left in the colony overnight.
Generally the weaker twin drops off leaving mum with a single baby she can manage to raise.
I often wonder if some of the scrawny babies we find on the ground in the absence of a dead or injured mum bat around, are the weaker of twins who have dropped off.
UPDATE 5 days later:
The twins' mum Riki was improving enough that her twins were reunited with her. Sometimes this is a tricky process where the baby may not want mum or the mum may not want her baby back, but Riki just took the twins back and the babies went straight onto her like they'd only been away a few minutes.
Further Update: Mum Riki didn't seem to be able to manage and feed both her babies and after about a week a decision was made to take the smaller and more vulnerable twin, Velcro, and hand raise her.
Riki is now coping with Klingon well and her head injury is slowly improving. In care, Velcro is gaining weight and growing and thriving.
Another happy ending though not the ending for which we were hoping.
I think it's actually very fortunate that the twins came into your care, Meg. I can't imagine mum being able to fly around with TWO babies attached and both of them surviving in the long run.
Look at that tiny little bottle for that little little girl!
Awww wittle wittle
Teensy-weensy!
It's amazing what you do for these tiny creatures. They are so special and you show them such love. I've learned so much about them by watching your channel. Thank you!
I feel the same.
you took these words out of my mouth! I think there is a special place in heaven for caring people like her
You are so sweet! I agree.
Mumbat Riki is so lucky she survived & that her babies Velcro & Klingon, were in your EXCELLENT care!!💕 I love when you extend their wings against the light, so intricate, fragile & lovely! Those awful Maggots!😠 Thank you Meg for their beautiful care on the way to all being survivors!!!🦇🦇🦇💕💕💕
They each look so tiny until you put them right aside each other...then Klingon looks like the mighty man he truly is. So pleased to see little Velcro attack her bottle with such gusto!
Go away evil maggots! :)
Little Klingon was so patient and silent during that procedure. Good boy!
Oh how I wish I lived by you I would love to help with these beautiful animals
Me too🦇🦇♥️♥️
Oh gosh, me too!! I would LOVE to devote my life to animal rescue! I’m so thankful for you and the job you do!! Thanks again!!
There are bat rescues all over the place! Go for it!
me to
Valerie Pagendarm I’d be surprised to find Bat Rescues in U.S. but ours don’t have cute fox faces
She's Velcro all right, I'm stuck on her💜. Precious duo. Thanks Meg 🌸
It's amazing how Velcro responds to the carer's affectionate stroking on her head. She doesn't know where she is, so it's wonderful that these innocent critters ended up being cared for so that they'll live their lives.
Restores my faith in humanity which is presently much needed. Thank goodness there are people like you in the world who know to treat living creatures with respect. I was just fascinated watching you handle all 3 - their little wings, their feet. Velcro (Vel) and Klingon 😆 Thank you for sharing with us their progress! I wish them happy lives.
Hi Rebekah
Velcro and Klingon were returned to their mum Riki a few days later, but she wasn't able to manage the very stressy and poor feeding baby Velcro, who was moved to a human carer who renamed her Ruby Tuesday.
Further vids can be found by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/Velcro/Klingon/Ruby Tuesday.
Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
@@Megabattie going there now. ❤️
The exact second Velcro goes from 'stop putting things in my face' to 'MALK' is my favorite part
The twins are adorable. Miss Velcro is a chatterbox and Mister Klington is so layed back. I hope there isn't anymore maggots on Klington
Klingon. Like the Star Trek warrior race Klingons.
Because he was clinging on.
And Velcro is Vulcan invention :)
@@Megabattie I was wondering if Klington's name was from Star Trek. Every time I saw it I thought of Star trek
@@missybecka8989 It was because he was a cling-on clinging onto his mum. And then the warrior aliens from Star Trek - he needed a good fighting name.
@@Megabattie Worf would be proud
It is such a privilege and pleasure to watch how gentle and caring you are with these baby bats. They are so lucky to have you and other bat caretakers to love and help them grow.
Blessings to you for the good work you do.
Best wishes,
Dianna
So nice to hear that all three are coming along well.
Thank you Meg for all your love and care.
OMG the tiniest bottle ever! Thank you for rescuing this little family. Doing God’s work ❤️
This is amazing. I have never seen anything like this. There is a place in heaven for this woman. She is a caretaker of the Earth's wildlife. . . So knowledgeable! ❤
Beautiful babies! Hope the get reunited with mum 🦇🦇🦇
They do and the mom takes them back but she is only able to raise Klingon so Velcro is taken away to be hand raised!!!🦇♥️
When it realized the milk was in the bottle, that was so damn adorable!
How magical that this poor mum was found with two babies under her wings. It is wonderful that you saved three bats, and that you were able to reunite their mum with them both, albeit briefly, before she raised her stronger son. A great job Meg, you should be very proud!
Tiny baby bats with tiny baby bottles...... It's too pure 😭😭😭
Tiny bottles. So adorable. Super Woman. Knows her stuff about this critter. God Bless you Bat Moma
The moment when the little baby batty realized there was milk in the bottle was so like the juice moment, or the first fruit! 💖o💖
How much does everyone adore the batsifier? I can't stand how cute that is. Such sweet little creatures deserve a guardian like this wonderful lady ♥️
They've got such bony fingers/toes. And their little heads and faces are so cute.
Bats are adorable, in an odd way. 💕
Argh...!!! When the baby girl has her bottle----adorable...!!! Poor Mama, hope she recovers.... This woman is GREAT...!!!
Nature is cruel at times, that's just the way it is ‐ it makes me mad at times. Meg, your voice calms these sweet babies, you and Maggie are super gifted. I thank the Lord for you. Take care, sweet lady
You are the most wonderful human being I’ve ever seen.
It’s now over a year later, I hope velcro, Klingon and mom are doing ok.
I love people who help animals. Thanks for this it was a pleasure watching
I swear the cuteness is too freaking much!!😍😍😍😍
I love the trilling sound the babe’s make! Onward bound to the next video! God abundantly bless you, Meg!
She put her little head under your hand so gratefully, when you started stroking her. Her one ear still curled is so touching.
Oh i am in love !!! i've never much liked bats ,but this little baby is just darling !! And her brother is also ! Velcro and Klingon.. perfect names !! I admire this " bat lady " so much ! 💞😊💞
They are super cute.
I never thought of bats being beautiful.....but these guys are. Even the adults.
I like seeing the different techniques of swaddling baby bats - you give them a little momma pillow to cling to and swaddle them up - other people I saw crossing their wings and wrapping them like little burritos
I use both - when you have a lot of babies it's easier if they're not as bulky to hold and put in your sookie.
MEG, YOU TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF THE FLYING FOX ❤❤❤LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ❤❤❤
Awwwww pink and blue bottles and dummy’s that is just too cute, your a wonderful loving lady.
Maggots are such horrible creatures! They feed on animals that are living and defenseless. They are both so beautiful. I especially love little Velcro. She's just so tiny and delicate ❤️
Maggots are alive creatures and they need to feed as well.
@@geraldclay6685 They actually eat up dead decaying animals The problem is they work too well sometimes and eat up living animals too.
@@geraldclay6685 It's true. Many would say similar things about these babies. At the same time, the reaction to both of them is almost animalistic survival instinct. Sigh.
Velcro: Die, human!
Klingon: *rolls eyes at his sister's antics*
I love how dedicated you are to these special little souls. Makes me happy even on my worsed days.
You are one of Earths ANGELS if there were more people like you on this earth it would be a much better place thank you so much
I prefer fairy godmother - there is nothing angelic about me.
They pack an awful lot of cuteness in their tiny bodies!
They are so sweet and the teeny bottles make me giggle.
I like the gentle way you treat these wonderful creatures. Your love and care is heartwarming.
It's not hard to treat them gently - they're gorgeous little creatures
Not all heroes (heroines) wear capes! You are an amazing woman, a credit to humanity. Thank you for all that you do for the bats! 💚
What tremendous love you show. You gentle ways and loving touch I'm certain is nuturing to them. Thank you for your compassion
They're so incredibly delicate. I don't know why, but I really enjoy watching these wonderful lady caregivers give such intricate and thorough TLC to the pitiful things. I am so glad that someone looks after these very misunderstood but real smart animals. They have feelings just like us.
We love doing it.
@@Megabattie I can understand why. I have never seen a creature so in need of human attention. There's something enchanting about bats. Especially their babies. I know they're devoted mothers. And I bet most of them in the wild have had to make some hard choices. And I don't doubt for a minute that they didn't pay an emotional price for their choice of survival for one or another.
Those bottles are way too darling. 🥰🥰🥰
They're used IV drug bottles. I get them from the hospital and vets, soak off the labels and pull off the caps. They come in all different sizes.
@@Megabattie oh my gosh, now I recognize them!! Lol!!! Oh my gosh that's too perfect!!!
You, sweet lady, are surely an angel 😇 Bat pacifiers!?!? I've never seen anything so darn precious or cute in my life (except for my human son of course lol) But good Lord I can't get enough of these tiny creatures or of this womans voice!
Bats are so fascinating and so beautiful. Bravo and thank you for the patience and love you give them. Amitiés from France.😊
So delicate and beautiful wish everyone appreciated more!!! They go right 2 my heart!!
Thank you so much for taking care of and helping these amazing animals!
I really like doing it - and baby season every year is both tragic and delightful. Tragic because the mums have to die before the orphans need to be raised. And delightful because they are enchanting little charmers to raise.
Awesome lady 😀👍💪 bless you ❤️
This is so fascinating to watch a rescue of bats. You are so knowledgeable about them.
The babies have their mother's quiet disposition, so adorable
The babies are babies, but mum has knocked herself silly and has no idea which way is even up. She didn't protest me taking the babies away from her, which is a sign of how badly she's hit her head.
Babies are babies and are always fairly trusting - they might initially protest being taken off their mum because they don't have experience of it and they know it's not right, but if you feed them, tend them, cuddle and love them, they will transfer their love to you and let you be their mum.
Velcro, the youngest baby, was very stressy and mum Riki wasn't able to care for her, but Riki did manage to raise Klingon into a fat and sassy baby. Please look at the description for further information on what was happening and updates on their time in care.
Welcome to Megabattie, Photini.

What a wonderful, caring woman.
Just discovered this channel. Thanks for putting updates in the description since this is a few years old. Thank you for all you do for the bats.
Aww....quite a lot of work getting these two babies settled in for the night. Thank you again for your efforts to save these magnificent creatures
they are so helpless. so glad you found them, Megabattie.
and glad you're getting them maggot free. nasty creatures.
De-maggoting is a matter of just picking them all off and going back again and again to make sure no eggs have hatched or maggots have crawled out from tiny crevices since the last time I checked.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful creatures with us.
Beautiful.
I hope you are well Meg!❤
They have such expressive faces! 😍
You are wonderful! in the sense of the word, Wonder Full! Your attention to every detail and the love you lavish on these little creatures! Thank you for sharing!
I’m presently going through the same issues with maggots on a juvenile bird I found in our backyard. It’s crazy how they seem to appear from nowhere after I think I have got them all. It brings to mind how people, and even physicians, use to believe that maggots and other carrion crawlers were manifested in/by bad smells. It’s no wonder when they seem to just appear from the aether.
Fabulous job with the beautiful bat family 🙂👍
And I have people telling me that maggots only eat dead flesh. Over and over people correct me and tell me I'm wrong.
Megabattie I’ve had the same discussion with folks. The larvae definitely prefer rotten waste, carrion, and such, but will eat what’s available rather than expire. I remember watching an episode of the old show “Dr. Quin Medicine Women” where she treated a severe ear infection by putting maggots into his ear to eat the infection. I believe that was when I learned they will also eat live tissue. Although I’m not sure if that is actually a factual treatment that was used by early Doctors/settlers. It seems, to me at least, it could turn extremely ugly if they were left in to long. ✌️🙂
@@ScooBdont Not all fly maggots eat live tissue. Most of them just eat dead tissue.
Amazing!! Totally 💯 AMAZING!!! I wish I was one of your bats!!🤣😂🤣😂💯❤️
Such cuties! Grow strong little Velcro and Klingon!
You are an amazing human being, these beautiful creatures are so lucky to have someone like you to care for them - we can all learn so much from you!
My my, she is so cute! Just tiny then. ❤
Big brother is very cute as well❤

Simply precious. I enjoy all your videos but there's something special about these 2. I'm glad they were successfully reunited with their mom and everyone had a happy ending. Thank you for all you do for these magnificent creatures.
Further Update: Mum Riki didn't seem to be able to manage and feed both her babies and after about a week a decision was made to take the smaller and more vulnerable twin, Velcro, and hand raise her.

Thank you so much for the update. You had said previously that you surmised in the wild the small twin may drop off and mom takes care of the larger, more viable twin. I suppose this is nature taking its course, as cruel as we may perceive it to be. Velcro is lucky she's already in such good hands. I'm sure she'll thrive with your loving, expert care. Will another reunion with Riki and Klingon be attempted down the road, or will to much time have passed by then?
Merci infiniment aux soignants de prendre autant soin de ces petites merveilles 😍😍😍😙😙😙💞💞💞💞

THANKYOU for your tireless efforts and just as importantly, your educational videos showing us the nonstop work these precious creatures receive in your care, they are so important to our world...
Incredible story of these twin beauty’s. I’m so glad you found that mum couldn’t care for them both while still in your care and you were able to take the smaller baby. It’s great to learn they all did well. Such tiny pups! ❤️
Both of them were reasonably sized pups - Klingon was a booffy healthy boy. Little Velcro was a lot smaller and had probably been born a week or 2 premmie.
It is a credit to Riki that she was able to raise her for so long till her accident.
The accident may have been because she was too heavy to fly well and to manage to find enough food to support herself and both babies.
Velcro's velcro has served her well up to this point!
This was lovely to watch ... the care I mean .. but also made me bit emotional.
Ooooh! They're so precious, aren't they? I hope their mum's going to be okay! I haven't gotten that far, yet.
Gorgeous twins v horrible maggots . Gorgeous twins win! Hoorah!
God bless you truly 💐💞🐾
