I find it very amusing how Lagertha says that Aslaug isn't fit to be queen, when it was Aslaug who ruled in Ragnar's long absence and Kattagat prospered greatly. And make no mistake, Aslaug was the one with the final say on all matters, not Bjorn.
N Slater Lagertha f*cked up when she killed Aslaug, that's for sure. She's smart enough to have known the consequences, but.. well, shitty writing, or maybe they intended to make her less likeable. As for Aslaug, I give her credit, but she was just as a "good" of a ruler as Ragnar in his last years, but at least she had some dignity left. I guess Bjorn was just never interested in ruling or making decisions for Kattegat, he always wanted to leave..
You are absolutely right about the writing. Not only have there been massive missed opportunities, but character motivations and loyalties have often shifted dramatically for no other reason than shock value or "suspense". The killing of Snake in the Eye in a perfect example of that.
Don't even get me started about missed opportunities... I was already disappointed with the second half of previous season, but this season has been a disaster so far. I get a feeling that writers do not know which way to go or how to develop story. Almost every character acts out of their character, most scenes seem forced, just thrown there out of nowhere. Like, what was that "tell her father I want to sleep with his daughter" scene and what purpose did that whats-her-name girl have at all (besides dying)? Sigurd's death was so unnecessary, he was one of the most famous sons of Ragnar and they just got rid of him. Lagertha and Bjorn have been one of my fave characters on the show , even though both have failed. Obviously, the throne of Kattegat is cursed, everybody ended up dead.
For me it was when Ecbert learned of Athelstan's death via vision. That just kills all suspense and tension, you know? "I just feel that he's dead". It's a cop out. Never mind that Ecbert's actions of destroying the viking settlement pushed Floki over the edge to kill Athelstan, which would've been a great scene to see the Wessex King realize how his greed and ambition killed a man he loved and how much that could've wrecked him. Instead we'll have Ecbert just...kinda...know it happened. And I'm getting sick of the Seer. He's there purely to create tension by teasing, and always has this excuse of "I'm not telling you anything else because (fill in the blank)." He's literally a walking plot spoiler that might as well play "DUM-DUM-DDUUUMMMMM!!!" on a loop. And that's just some of many issues I have.
Oh, and about the "tell her father I want his daughter" scene. That was because the Seer said Bjorn would marry a princess. Historically it was Sigurd who married a princess.
