One of the best movie going experiences ever. I came out of the theater feeling like I'd been on vacation for a month. ~~~ The World would be a lot more mellow if there were more like this.
Yes. One of my all time favorites. It used to air on HBO every Saturday in the early morning. I watched it more times than I can remember. ...and the theme song... WOW!
Maybe my favorite film of all time. I saw a documentary once (maybe BBC?) about the making of the film. A quote there from David Puttnam, the executive producer, said about the film stays with me: "The spirit in which that film was made. If you could bottle that... aw Jesus the world would be a better place".
Saw this at the movies in 83 with my new bride and fell in love with it. 40 years later I’m sitting up watching it alone having just lost my lady to cancer and I feel her next to me holding my hand and still loving the story.
This movie was the most awful thing I have ever seen. It made no sense whatsoever and made my brain hurt lol what is even happening
I don't get it. And why do they always rehash the same actors.

I was 8 when that happened. I grew up, and still live, in a wee village on the NW coast of Scotland….5 minutes drive from the castle in Highlander. I’m desperate to go to the USA now that I’ve raised my 3 kids. I want to go to Massachusetts and work as a nanny or a maternity nurse. I need some time away from the lochs and hills!
It all true. I lived many years in the west highlands. Walked many of those places. If there is a god, or some force. Then in western Scotland he or it can sometimes reach out onto a mountain or shore and touch you directly. I have seen the Aurora there on a mountain one night and it was breathtaking. Seen strange electrical storms coming from the atlantic. When I think back those are the memories from there that haunt me now I am far away.

agree. i lived away 35yrs, been there a couple of times since both on bicycle, . magical place. something hard to pinpoint why..
but it not setin Western Scotland ! Bens beach is; beach and dune system extends for several miles between Arisaig and Mallaig. The final shot of the helicopter flying Mac back to Houston was filmed above Loch Eilt, between Lochailort and Glenfinnan.

What a hidden gem this movie is. It's an old favorite.
Shot in Mallaig in the Highlands of Scotland. It really is the most beautiful place. And the villagers are just like this. Bit mad but very close to one another!

I once wrote a column for a Dutch magazine called The Local Hero pyramid where I explained that Local Hero is the movie all other movies aspire to. It is the best movie I have ever seen. I haven't seen all movies ever made, so I can't say it is the best movie ever made. However, I suspect it is.
Still one of the best trailers I’ve seen in my life. The music sells it especially. The best part of this film’s beautiful soundtrack.
The sound track is worth the purchase. I've listened to it hundreds of times.

Watched this movie because of the incredible Mark Knopfler. Ends up being in my top 3 of all time.

Local Hero would have to be in my Top Ten favourite films. We watched it as a family last night and I still Ioved it, after all these years, as did our son. But our daughter was extremely underwhelmed: “nothing happened!”

The current generation need a billion things happening at once. As a teacher, I watch what young kids in Thailand watch on you tube - mindless fast paced madness. Few today GET IT...life, beauty, nature, simplistic bliss SAD ey
@@ButtonPhonics I am Thai !! I am 19 and come from the province of Nakhon Sri Thammarat. I got introduced to this movie through Mark Knopfler and Newcastle which is the club I support. I have three movies that I always recommend to people (Snatch, Reservoir Dogs and Groundhog Day) but my favourite movie actually is Local Hero.. It's hard to recommend to people here in Thailand.. especially people in my age range. It's true that children here in Thailand nowadays are raised with endless amounts of fast paced n flashy videos on RUclips which is a shame really.. These young kids will grow up and even if they watch gems like this movie, I am sure they won't find the enjoyment and value in it at all.

Saw this as a 7/8 year old kid when it played on cable the year after it came out. For some reason this movie got to me even as a kid, it was the handful of sand scene that did it. Even to this day, this 47 year old cynical Yank loves the absolute joy and brilliance of this movie.
Same. I've seen it as a kid but some scenes just stuck with me and I have no idea why. I doubt I understood what the movie was about back then.

It shows you how a slick oil company rep found himself falling in love with the place but the locals who's place it was couldn't sell it quick enough . Ps I'm sitting here within a mile of where the beach scenes were filmed

I disagree. I think it’s one of the best trailers I’ve ever seen. Sure, the narration is a bit hokey, but the music is the saving grace.
I agree. This trailer is awful. An obvious sign the studio had no idea how to sell this film. In no way does it give any sense of its brilliant, quirky sense of humor. They're selling it like a drama or some kind of bizarre mystery.

Classical theatre would rate it a comedy. from the greeks on there was comedy, tragedy and historical
It’s life… comedy, beauty, sad, thought provoking, profound. Mark Knopler’s soundtrack brings it all together so beautifully. One of my favorite films.
Iv been going to where this was filmed since 1995 . Now it's full of fucking wizards because Harry fucking potter train was filmed around there . Every nationality you can think invades this place.

I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. This was the most awful movie! Plot holes, dialogue that is pointless and goes no where. It was hilarious to make fun of… lol we hated it!
