A: Adobe Flash CS6 for the animation itself, but I added all SFX, music, dialogue, video effects, cropping ETC in Sony Vegas Pro 14. Also, all music except Interstellar Retribution was made in FL Studio 12.3.

So, since no one reads the description, I feel like I should write this here.
I've assembled a team that are helping me turn this animation into a playable game!
We've rebranded a bit, and went from "Disbelief Papyrus" to "Undertale: Disbelief", to make it clearer its an Undertale fangame.

This game will be almost identical to the animation, but you'll be able to choose whether you want to fight or spare, and there are several endings.
It's also filled with easter eggs, places to explore outside of the fighting arena, and bonus AU crossover modes, like Underswap: Disbelief.

What I especially love about this fight is phase 3, when he summons Sans and Undyne. We've all watched it, we know Papyrus made them, and throughout the phase there is so many hints of it.
Papyrus's impression that Undyne is unbeatable leads you to do 1 damage. Undyne lets you have a turn, which is unlike her, so that may have been Pap speaking. Sans falling asleep, when in genocide he takes it very seriously. All thse little details make this fight so amazing. An incredible fight even 4 years later.
Notice how undynes spears become bones at the end, he knows they aren't alive anymore, maybe the rest of those spears thrown at the player were just him seeing his bone attacks in the same light as an illusion

I like how Papyrus’s eye glows orange, symbolizing bravery, mirroring Sans’s eyes which glow cyan and yellow for patience and justice. It’s a cool little detail that connects the two even more.
And by phase 3, when he bops his head his eyes flicker yellow to blue like sans has, it's real interesting actually

Even now, this is still one of the best Undertale fancreations I've ever seen. One of the most brilliant showings of Papyrus' infinitely deep and touching personality. It's impossible to not feel for the guy, it really feels like Papyrus is the only one that could rack up so much emotion from a person. Everything in the animation still hits me hard to this day, especially the ending. The ending's a true gutwrencher.

I mean, enough people freak out when they accidentally kill Toriel. Apparently a lot of people get upset when/if they kill Papyrus. Can you imagine the amount of people who might turn back at the very end of Genocide run if they get hit with THIS? San is annoying, he frustrates you with difficulty and you CELEBRATE when you beat him before suffering through the ending. But this? This is a one-two of difficulty and EMOTION!
When sans and papyrus forgot fighting and just started playing ping pong together, that was the moment I felt would fit perfectly in Undertale.
Adorable and heartbreaking. I genuinely wish we could have seen Pap and Sans battle side by side.

The saddest part for me is that you can tell the undyne and and aren't real, because their personalities aren't the real them but the personas they wear around papyrus because they want to protect him. Damn..
That could also just be a misunderstanding of their characters given the characterization of Papyrus as well as Sans in the opening
I honestly think that he's actually this strong canonically, but he's so good hearted he holds 99.9% of it back all the time, kinda like sans, exept sans dosent fight at all unless its to go all out

The reason why sans never fights you earlier is because he made a promise to Toriel to never hurt the Human. He says that he never likes making promises but he did it just for Toriel. But that promise ended up with the Human killing everyone and then Sans having to break his promise. Basically in this AU, he breaks his promise to fight the Human but fails. So if Sans never made a promise, the next fight after Toriel would have been Sans which I think is really cool to think about.

The fight is pretty much the five stages of grief
Phase 1 - Denial
Phase 2 - Anger
Phase 3 - Bargaining (Struggling to find reasoning and tries to find a compromise, like increasing your health and hallucinating what his friends would do)
Phase 4 - Depression
Ending - Acceptance (Even as you kill him he's accepting you)
if there was a canon Disbelief Phase 5, it would be him just accepting it, and instead of trying to spare you or kill you, just goes back to capture you
Interesting theory! I do have one nitpick, though:
I feel that Backbone (Phase 3) contains both bargaining (Creating false versions of his friends, does dab some denial in there too) *and* depression, as at the end of the phase Papyrus admits that the bargaining is useless and drops the remaining anger and denial.
He seems much more accepting in the final phase - accepting of his friends’ deaths and of what most likely will be his own, but still hopeful that he can change you.

That first game text line of "Papyrus no longer believes in you" is so strangely and subtlely touching.
Papyrus's memories of Sans and Undyne are very well written, and definitely show how Papyrus thought of them before they died. They are both caricatures of themselves.
The memory of Sans is much lazier than the real deal. He forgets to take his turn, falls asleep during attacks, loves ketchup to a comical extreme, and is noticeably weaker than his real counterpart. It's possible that Papyrus did not know of his brother's strength, or that Papyrus is underplaying Sans to allow himself to be the star of his own fantasy.
Another interesting thing to note is that Sans' left eye does not glow during attacks as it does in the game, only doing so when he picks up the ketchup. Perhaps Papyrus remembers him doing something similar, and doesn't know the extent of the power?
The memory of Undyne is the opposite case. She takes 1 damage from an attack that should have dealt thousands. Her spears move so fast that they'd be impossible to block. She is chivalrous, allowing the human to take the first turn despite being able to go first should she want to.
Papyrus believes Undyne to be the strongest monster ever. Stronger than even him, and his memory of her shows that. While Sans is injured from the wound that the human killed him with, Undyne's shining armor remains un-broken. Papyrus's memory of Undyne is absurdly strong. She is unconquerable by anyone.
Absolutely jaw-dropping animation. The only thing I question is Chara's little =) moment there, but it's not bad. Just odd.
I can't stress enough how great this is.

Thats a really deep look into the animation, I really didnt realize all these things.
The easy answer is Determination. Monsters can innately have it as Undyne shows, but I doubt this is the case because Papyrus says "UNDYNE ONCE TOLD ME THAT HUMANS WERE DETERMINED. HOW CUTE! HOWEVER... I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS DO NOT REQUIRE THAT." at 9:57.
The more likely possibility is some sort of unexplained Gaster magic, since his sprite and some Wingdings appear at 10:47. If you think Gaster's followers and Goner Kid are Gaster's creations, and not their own entities, then these "memories" would fall under the same category.

I really admire the animation. The heart and attacks move like actual gameplay. It makes it seem like you're watching a playthrough instead of an animation. They must've taken so long just to get this right, and I feel to it.
this shows the stages of grief pretty well
1) Shock and denial:
after sans first died, papyrus was really shocked and sad, all the way until you fight him
2) Anger
phase 2. he gets angry. not only at you because you refused his mercy and kept attacking, but also at himself for not being able to protect sans or anyone else
3) Depression
for him, it was quite short, but it's at 8:57, in between phases 2&3. he feels helpless and unable to do anything. of coue, the great papyrus quickly picks himself up and keeps fighting
4) Bargaining
he "brings back" sans and undyne, or at least his memories of them (i say that because like, that's how he sees them, not what they really are. sans is lazy, falling asleep in the middle of battle and although not completely being weak, still not being as aggressive as when you fight him normally. it's strange how his eye only glows blue and yellow once, instead of every time he throws you against a wall. and undyne, he saw her as the strongest monster in the underground, powerful with crazy attacks, yet still fair, letting you make the first move.). he's "reaching out to others" although those others are dead people that he misses, but they're still helping him. he's also "struggle[ing] to find the meaning for what happened" as he's still somewhat confused and wants to deny the deaths of his brother and his best friend, and is also shown when sans is going to "talk to [you] about what [you] did," he falls asleep, as papyrus doesn't want to think about what he's doing.
5) Acceptance
he finally accepts that sans and undyne are dead, and "explores new options" and gets "a new plan and pace," going back to the fairness he used to have, and realizing that fighting you to the death was not the way to go, he just has to get you to give up.
great job, flames, you made a really intricate fight with a lot of little details and on-point [papyrus] personality, anyone could think that this is a real part of undertale!

I love how from 7:29 to 7:35 Papyrus keeps almost letting his anger get the best of him, he keeps wanting to kill you, and then he ends up breaking and letting you out because he really can't bring himself to do it
What I find interesting about phase 3 specifically is how strangely _friendly_ Undyne and Sans are; in that Sans jokes around almost as much as he does in other routes, and even Undyne lets you have your turn first.
Since they aren't truly them, and are more or less formed from Papyrus' own magic, I believe these versions of them replicate how Papyrus knows them. Undyne spars with Papyrus, so she's fair and playful whilst still being fun and ruthless. Sans is less like in Pacifist, but is still much less serious compared to the base game's murder run.
It's possible Papyrus has never seen these darker, serious halves of his friends, and his interpretation of how they'd act are reflected by how he sees them when they aren't acting like such; which is why they act pretty strange in this context. I thought that was interesting.
That is interesting but I’m pretty sure he knows sans would have just ended you regardless so he preferred to think of him as his usual laid back self rather than someone who’d kill without a second thought

I just noticed that in the original sans fight, his eye glows yellow and cyan, those colors represent Justice and Patience, two traits that represent his personality. For this instead, Papyrus has a eye that glows green and orange representing Kindness and Bravery, the two things that he is showing you.

I love how this represents the stages of grief
Phase 1: sadness

This shows how much Papyrus cared about his friends, but also the human. He’s willing to put his life on the line to avenge Sans, but doesn’t have the will sometimes to hurt you. As he said, “EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE.”

I like that the legendary hero gives plus 4 attack. Most people just ignore that in fangames and animations. Even with no actual bonus it still feels better like that. Amazing animation.
It's nice coming back to the classics every once and a while. For all the shade people tend to give it now, Disbelief Papyrus is still one of the coolest AUs and animations I've ever seen.

Disbelief, the classic alternate timeline of all. Still is the coolest, while not as flashy as those dusttrust fangame with their powerpoint screens lol. It is a revolutionary concept of mechanics, using both the story and the game mechanics being implemented with new things. Moving box, battle menu, and even a minigame was implemented cleverly.
I believe that Disbelief is the start of the whole crazy fangame golden age, despite itself being only an animation. Games like dusttrust is a ton of crazy stuff that is inspired by disbelief. Disbelief is the pump to the fandom, making more and more crazier cool stuffs. I'm thankful that disbelief exists.

I think disbelief has the most accurate representation to papyrus, more than any other fan game, comic, or animation.
If you look at the misconceptions about papyrus, like him hating puns, being naive to what death is, and having no capabilities in fighting this game represents how all of those are false. Example, in undertale papyrus makes about 14 different puns as to sans' 6, he mentions thst you killed his friends and that he know what death is, unlike how some thing of his knowledge of death is minimal to none, and shows that he is capable of fighting well. Another thing this does right is show that papyrus can use gaster blaster without issue as shown if you spare him in the genocide run and go on a date where he says thst his special attack would have "blasted you away"
In short disbelief is one of, if not the most accurate representation of papyrus' character.

Also something I thought was funny to think about is that this is probably also the most canon possible representation of how chara would fight, since they're an expert on killing it'd make sense they'd be able to dodge new/unfamiliar attacks at a speed a person probably wouldn't be able to keep up with.
Also, I remember someone pointing out that Papyrus sprites in the fight are not moving at all, and the more monster wants to kill you the more they move. This perfectly fits Papyrus's pacifistic nature, but also this video, where Papyrus was moving the most during phase 2, where he seriously tried to kill you.

@@Kymopika no... first off just because they didn't die in the video doesn't mean they haven't died to him, also the name in the bottom left being chara isn't the player characters name. If you select the name chara at the start of the game, you aren't playing as chara, you play as frisk. Have you actually played undertale?
Plus, chara isn't evil, and doesn't inherently want to kill people, all they want if dor the player to face consequences for their actions, there is very few times you can argue chara wants you to kill people, or is event at all evil

it hurts so much to watch Papyrus ,the kindest Character in Undertale die with "i still believe in you" as his last words. He always forgives you, NO matter what you do.

I love this so much. the soundtrack is amazing, the animations great, and this will forever hold a place in my heart as one of if not the most iconic undertale fancreation. As much as this goes against papyrus' character, I love this and will always remember it.
I think it's actually quite accurate to how papyrus would likely behave in this scenario
Watching this again after so long, I really love how this Fight still has the “Undertale” essence, witty humor, iconic moments, unexpected turns, while being really serious at times, this is most likely my favorite Undertale fan animation, the fact that I was sucker for the concept of Disbelief papyrus really helps

Nobody is gonna see this, but I honestly think this animation is the perfect depiction of Papyrus as a character. Throughout the entire last 10 minutes of the animation, I felt so sorry for Papyrus. The fact that he had to go through this horrible time. And I think that's what Papyrus is supposed to be, a character we feel sorry for. He's the good man in a world built on hate. This and Handplates go hand in hand with the fact that Papyrus only wants to see the good in people, and that's all he'll ever see. That's why Sans and he are good opposites, even in beliefs. Judgment versus belief, guilty until proven innocent versus innocent until proven guilty. I think Papyrus also brings out the emotion in people because of the way he acts. He's like a child. The racecar bed, the cool dude swagger, in his final attack I felt like I was about to watch a 12-year-old die. Someone so happy and innocent murdered like nothing. "I still believe in you." Overall, this animation and the game that came after are amazing and I feel as if even though they're seen as holy within the Undertale fandom, outside of it, I think it's underrated. Amazing job!

Deltalab clearly Papyrus survived two strikes, although since most of the strength was transferred into that bone, it would have cushioned. Although,if Papyrus was in his psychotic 3rd phase he would have brushed the attack off

Coming back to this, I've realized something. Pacifist is a good ending and all, it shows everyone Thier true colors and beings out thier own characters. Well, everyone, except for one person. Papyrus. He still is a cool dude, warming up to the human in the end. But he never learned anything from it. That is what Disbelief changes. Disbelief is Papyrus' true ending. Of course, if you don't kill him. In phase 1 Papyrus is simply in shock. Finally coping with the fact that the human was indeed the one who killed everyone he loved. It's simply too big for his big heart. Phase 2 shows Papyrus finally snapping, trying to get revenge for everyone. Phase 3 is Papyrus simply going crazy trying to kill the human by summoning his friends, learning that he cannot do it, but Papyrus learns something. Not even they would want to kill the human. They simply were doing it for the good of others. He finally lets his friends go, and this is the climax of the Genocide route. Papyrus learns who he really is. He, in the final phase, learns not to be a toughie, like Undyne and Sans programmed him to. He learns to be himself. The skeleton he truly wanted to be from the beginning. He doesn't care about the royal guard crap anymore, because he learned what he truly missed. Being liked. Having friends. With this gone, Papyrus has nothing else. He simply doesn't need to accomplish that goal anymore. He only has four people left. The player, the human, himself, and his heart. He follows his heart, and tries to give the player (you) a heart. Tries to stop this nonsense. This is why Papyrus was the one soul who your heart would break to kill, along with Toriel. No monster actively wants violence, so he changes. Unfortunately, this leads to his canon demise, but at least he has his friends now.

To this day this soundtrack is one of the most emotionally affecting pieces of music I have ever consumed. The transition from “but the earth grew a spine” to backbone will always give me goosebumps and phase 2’s remix of megalo strikes back never fails to elevate my energy. Undertale AUs get memed on, but this is a piece of media that continues to emotionally affect me to this day.
I also appreciate the detail that at the beginning of each phase papyrus heals you, which is played off as sadism on his part, but by the end we realise that he’s really doing it because he sincerely does not want to kill the human.

To be completely honest, I doubt his special attack was him going full out, he just wanted to look intimidating to ward you off (this is what I think anyways). I doubt that was his actual special attack since he really wouldn't have wanted to go all out and possibly kill you
