Kiwi, you treat your customers cars with the kind of care a fella would give if he was putting his actual Granny behind the wheel. You care about making sure they're safe as they can be and that extra bit of concern shows in your videos. It's a nice thing to see.

I'm glad you got Granny's pickup properly sorted, Kiwi, and I understand why she digs it, because the '56 Buick on the rack in the background made me drool and my heartbeat spiked. I'm 79 now and I've owned a lot of cars through the years, but the one car I'd give my left nut to have back is the gunmetal gray, black and white tri-tone '56 with a red and black interior that I drove through high school and beyond. Alas, I'm not a rich man, so I've reluctantly abandoned all hope of ever owning another, but I can't give up the memories and love for the car. Rock on.

Not mentioned, but noticeable in the background are the bungees keeping the battery in place. And yep, I would do that 👍, at least until I could source a proper hold-down, or given the age, have a shop source/make a new battery tray & tie down. Still, it's s a very nice truck, and I hope she has many more years of fun with it.

A lot of those old cars/trucks had small alternators only 40amps.
In time those fail and the get upgraded to a more modern 100amp alternator. A smart move.
But those old vehicles also had dubious wiring, only just able to take the amps of the standard electrical equipment. The wiring was basically undersized from new.
That little wire from the alternator output probably only just did the job when new but now with years of corrosion of connections and the extra resistance that causes and a few new parts eg: the new alternator, the wiring is just not up to the job.
Great work putting in extra thick power cables!

I used the 1 wire 100 amp on my 66 F 100 Kiwi. Did the upgrade while installing the American Auto wire classic up grade harness kit. Great kit, it worked fantastic! If truck has a single cluster speedo with all the gauges included here's some helpful info for you if you ever need a new gas gauge to install. The F 100 with that style I searched high and low for gas gauge. No one had it on their books when I was looking. What I found is that the Bronco of that era with the single cluster has the exact same setup. Gas gauge replacement is listed under the Bronco only. Unless it's been updated the last 8 years or so. All the big name suppliers didn't have it when I was looking.

FYI, 6 gauge wire has a resistance of .004 ohms per foot. So at a stiff charging rate of 50 amps, with about 6 feet of wire, the voltage drop would be 6x.004x50=1.2 volts, and there'd be 50x50x6x.004 =60 watts of heat generated in the wire. 240watts at 100 amps. So, good call upgrading from 10 gauge! :)

Use to have a 1965 Ford F-100 shot bed step side that looked just like that truck, and had the 240 inline 6 with 3 speed on the tree. Thing had a top speed of 36 mph, and wouldn’t pull it’s self in 3rd gear. Those trucks, that had an inline 6 in them had a spacer that went behind the alternator that the bolt passed through to stop the flex. If that spacer was not there, it would shuck that fan belt after chewing it to pieces.

Speaking of electrical wires and fires , reminds me of a time years ago, when, for some reason the battery cable on my Monaro all of a sudden started to get very hot and the plastic casing was melting off it right before my very eyes, I knew Id better do something and fast , so I grabbed the hot cable and yanked on it really hard , hard enough to pull it out of the battery clamp , and disaster was averted , I had slightly burned fingers , and a fast beating heart. Ive often thought that pulling a cable out of its clamp must take a fair bit of force , its amazing what you can do with enough adrenalin. I cant remember why that happened but I hadn't owned the car very long , and there were some dodgy things to fix up on it. By the way , how did you get on with that rough running fire truck?
