So for Strangers of Paradise, not sure when dlc came out but on that gilgamesh difficulty shit is already difficult af, there is still the max difficulty lufenia also and this guy saying it was easy made me think he probably just beat the story on normal or even hard which is still easy, probably did chaos with extra mode too. Another thing he said about gear system in SoP is that you can just click OPTIMIZE GEAR and it will equip you highest level loot but it doesn't mean that that gear is better than some of your other ones you can do a customized build 16:03 and have so many combinations woth different classes and sifferent playstyles it's crazy and labyrinth stuff is pretty difficult but fun too, I feel like this rundown of SoP was before dlc or idk because it doesn't make sense otherwise, definitely better than Nioh 1 at least in my opinion, didn't care for story in either but gameplay feels more fun with SoP

It's obvious that Wolong did not do very well in the vertical integration, maybe because of the budgets, maybe because it's something else like the actual faculties that directs the game. Whatever the reason it is, the game itself can be viewed as a product opening to market, with a huge subtraction on the combat system and with a better guidance. And it indeed listens to the feedback from the community. I agree that Ronin project should be the exclusive spot to focus on.

Talking about Stranger of Paradise : "Combat is not as extensive and in depth, as, say, Dark Souls or even Nioh". Could you please elaborate on that? I just can't see how Stranger's combat with fully customizable movesets for every weapon, including equipable enemy abilities on post-game gear, and a plethora of defensive and offensive options for any play-style can be described as more shallow than that of Dark Souls.

About wo long: "The spells are too slow." I gotta be the comment guy that says that you likely didn't quite do it right. Try weaving spells in after your deflects and you'll realize how much more interesting combat can be when all of your abilities get to work together.

    • @CosmicChris
      @CosmicChris Год назад +1

As somebody who is playing Wolong, I disagree with OP.
The magic just doesn't feel as satisfying as utilitarian as it is. And then the 5 phases is just. "I don't care, outside of niche situations. You just parry most things anyways. Wizardry just feels so at odds with it's gameplay loop in already pretty easy game."
Don't get me wrong, I think Wo Long is a fantastic game. But it doesn't exist in isolation from these other games. It also doesn't help that the Morale system is pretty much required for most of the useful skills, and even without caring about the Wizardry skills... they don't offer much outside of slightly situational buffs or debilitations. And compare that to Nioh 1 and 2, the magic system of Wo Long is fundamentally worse in every way. Like, fullstop. The magic system is just bad in Wo Long. The Parry system and Martial Arts system is too useful by comparison to ever want to waste time using Wizardry, even when in advantage. There is rarely ever a time you'll want it past debuffing or buffing before a fight, or applying things like poison. Wizardry feels... more like a co-op thing you coordinate with your friends. To be useful in situations without throwing a fight or encounter... when the game just doesn't play in a way where you will practically need Wizardry. It just doesn't feel good to use either even when you can argue you may find SOME use for it.
(What that use will be, I really could not tell you. The game is just that generally much easier to use deflect into Martial arts lol.)
The fact you can brute force more efficiently, versus finding a situation where you need it past removing field effects or buffs... is really telling. Where in games like Nioh 1 and 2. "I need to apply as many debuffs as I can, so I can go back to doing my long ass combos." really does say a lot about the balance differences. You also just feel generally more rewarded for exploiting weaknesses with Omniyo and Ninpo Magics. Granted, Nioh 1 and 2 generally reward you getting the most out of options for your builds. Kinda feels like a real time Shin Megami Tensei type affair if I am honest, and it's just really satisfying because it feels like you earn victories. In Wo Long, kinda feels handed to you with how... simple the mechanics are by comparison.

It would totally enhance your experience if you read and had knowledge of it. A good example of it is in the Nioh 2, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was the one who unified Japan at that period and in the game they added a twist where there are 2 people who makes up the identity of the Persona Hideyoshi. The magic in Wo Long is most effective for crowd control and when it's used to exploit the weakness of an enemy. Each element has a weakness to another so it helps to know which one you are fighting and which one to use against it. For example, when are fighting an enemy that lights their weapon on fire, you can use a water spell like ice to douse it to prevent the extra damage you could take from the fire. You can also make an enemy stagger faster using spells of their elemental weakness.

Stranger of Paradise isn't bad honestly, if fact I think it's the best modern Final Fantasy game because of how good the game design is and that's saying something considering Final Fantasy (or JRPGS in general) and actual good game design rarely go hand in hand with me. It's the only action-based FF I found myself enjoying because there's little BS in it's gameplay and level design (Only real complaint is the lack of a map system and having to exit missions to adjust gear stats), the job system, along with the affinity system, is freaking good and can be surprisingly helping if you know what you are doing (Pressing the optimize gear option will NOT help you on the higher difficulties). The only REAL issue this game suffers from is on the technical side of things as the game is poorly optimized, like I was surprised it ran and looked as good as it did on my PS5 after finding out much data most of the game's assets have (Clearly a Square issue like with FFXIV 1.0).
If we're talking story, Nioh 1 and 2 are far worse than Stranger in this category because not only do they require you to have knowledge of actual Japanese history, but the way they're told with the cutscenes being almost unrelated to each other and characters sometimes being introduced in the very last mission with no explanation at all makes me wonder what the hell is even going on. Even the Assassin's Creed games told their stories better and those games took place in historical periods I initially knew nothing about. Stranger's on the other hand, while not told perfectly, is at least understandable and if you wish to no more about the lore, it's in the files. Sure, the story is a bit cliched and at first glance sounds like Nomura's signature Kingdom Hearts writing, but Kingdom Hearts got most of it's dumb writing from Final Fantasy, the light vs darkness thing with special guest time travel was what Final Fantasy 1 was all about, so it makes sense that it's prequel/spin-off, Stranger of Paradise, would be about the same thing as well.

I only played part of Nioh one and story was nice, though subtle. It DOES rely on knowing a but about Sengoku Japan at least from other games, movies and whatnot. Final Fantasy games OTOH were always known as separate as in you don't need to know ANYTHING before jumping into one.

For Wo Long what I've gotten out of the wizardry spells is that they are more for status effects than damage. Unless it's the big spells. The status effects are pretty nasty. Like shock is a spirit DOT and toxic makes any other status ailments remain at full duration until the toxic wears off. Add any other "bla bla" effect on "bla bla" action skill on some gear and you can just cancer your enemies to death and it's funny especially on invaders.

Also, burst counters in Nioh 2 were great. One thing I can say about Nioh 1 I liked better was the Abyss. Reason being is it had the absolute best gear you could get at 900+ floor Abyss. It gave you an edge in power most players weren't determined enough to achieve.
Nioh to stopped it at floor 108 with the Underworld and then depths of the Underworld but it just wasn't quite the same

IMO: Nioh 2 > SoP > Wo Long > Nioh
I don't know how you can say SoP doesn't have combat as indepth as Dark Souls games. The combat is pretty customizable and offers a lot of variety.
Not surprising Nioh 2 is top dog, but my issue with Nioh 1 is that it plays and feels like a tech demo at times. It's clear it has many rough edges. Wo Long is good, but it also lacks polish when it came out and it's combat is simple.

The combo and class system and especially customisation in FFO is also one of the best from team ninja, only behind Nioh 2 as its stance system allows for even more depth.

Things I hope will happen in Nioh 3 (or other similar games from TN):
    1) take Nioh 2 as a baseline, since that's the best combat system of any action-rpg game
    2) improve the loot system: more quality over quantity, or at least increase the inventory space, and improve the search options (filtering)
    3) 2 Picture Scrolls can be equipped ... because why not? :D
    4) I see this Interim as a sort of proof of concept for a hub => maybe they want to make Nioh 3 more open world, it could be nice instead of using the main map
    5) add a jump button, but make sure not to overdo it like Wo Long, if it's like Ninja Gaiden Black then great (doesn't jump very high + can be used for great platforming action)
    6) bring the roll back again from Nioh 1 instead of just temper
    7) last but not least: make the game harder. Way of the Nioh and the Underworld are too easy once you have reached level 750
    8) edit: forgot but it's crucial: get rid of that yokai shift

Very nice and interesting video, here, good sir ! I did not play FFSP, except for the demo but I did finish Wolong (although not played the extensions, coz I did not dig it so much), Nioh 1 and Nioh 2.
For those last two ones, I grinded them till the bone : finished the 999 levels of Nioh's abyss and stone of penance nine'd the Nioh 2's depth of the underworld (till floor 30). So I can definitely agree with your opinion about those games !
Regarding WL, I would be less enthusiastic, the gameplay fellt very shallow, expecially being released for so long after Nioh 2 ...
For me Nioh 2 will probably never be beaten and will forever rank #1 in action games category (and I have played almost all of these games for the last 20+ years : Ninja gaiden, Devil may cry, Bazonetta ...) and it's also definitely in my top 10 games ever, knowing I have been playing video games for over 40 years now ...

For SoP, just selecting optimizate equipment would get you killed way too quickly in the DLCs. You actually have to craft a solid build based on your weapon type and class to reliably do well (and if you put some more effort, you could absolutely be a monster too.)
I can't agree with you saying that optimize equipment trivializes the loot system unless you only went through the story once and avoided Chaos Mode. I do agree that most of the loot does end up being trash tho.
Occasionally they'll have some good effects that you can fuse onto other armor but for the most part yea.

Nioh 2 got nice story, nice combat and overall its KFC tier top of the line. I just want to go and have a taste even if I already go there once, cuz its that good. The story is good too, Its like story book where you only know the part of people story that you have partaken in or they told you about their goals and dream directly during the spirit sharing, they didnt drag out the cutscene and only give you what you need to know and thats professional. The story is weird in some places like how does that happen? but once you piece it together doing main and sidequest or just continue listening, its really awesome. They really like to tell story that was base on your character prespective, you only know what you see or heard but mostly seen type of stuff and there also lore if you absorb enouf knowledge from the soul core of yokai you absorb, its just a lot of reading thats all.
I like to focus on the story even when its spars, the combat is nice too, very fast pace and speedy unlike soul game so I don't get the "soulslike" thing unless they comparing the difficulty but I got stuck fighting boss like hundred of time in elden ring and DS but here only took me like two digit to get the ground in Nioh 2 cuz we have Nuclear option and the evade timing is very generous too.
The weapon is like Bloodborne level or maybe better, cuz the stand mechanic.
    90/100 very cool game.

Nioh 2 is a goddamn masterpiece, my second favorite "souls / soulslike" game, after Dark Souls 3, in 2023 I'm still playing Nioh 2, more or less several times a week. that's how addictive this game is, and I can still playing for a couple of years more, but I played Wu Long at the beginning of the year with a high hype, it was fun, ok, cool, but that's it, it feels like a game without soul, very empty, and when I finished everything I put it away and continued with more Nioh 2.

Combat is WAY more challenging since you also have 2 weapons you can switch on the fly, but each one has 3 stances and customizable combos for each stance with a ton of stuff you unlock over the course of the game. You also get Guardian Spirits like in Wo Long but instead of a few spell choices not only do you have Onmyo magic and Ninjutsu tools you also get to set 3 Yokai cores that kind of work like special attacks/summons on top of everything else you can upgrade and customize...

I really liked playing Nioh 2 using the Switchglaive but just the longer I played having to be on top of a map choosing whether I play the side quest or the new main quest just annoyed me. I'm typically someone who wants to do everything and so every time I did the side quest in the same map I just ran from my main quest I just got too annoyed.
The combat is pretty cool, I think both Nioh games I just felt like because of how fast you move you can easily engage and disengage without getting hit. But I did not do some of the final bosses in Nioh 2 but I doubt the game goes from easy to suddenly really hard only at the final part of the game. I feel like I figured out the combat in those games pretty well.
Most annoying fights were for sure those gank fights where you enter that realm effect (sorry it's been awhile since I played and my memory is dog shit) where it's all greyish and you just have to do battle after battle after battle until you killed them all and restore it. I just much rather fight 1 really strong enemy than fight many that still includes 1 strong guy.
Maybe I replay Nioh 2 some day and skip side quests though idk how much harder the game would become doing so.
For that reason Wo Long so far is my favorite game of theirs also because Sekiro is top 5 games of all time for me and it got the absolute perfect combat that any game who tries to mimic that is fire in my book. Their newest title seems to have a lot of Sekiro inspiration as well and seems to have a more open vibe to it so I'm hoping Rise of the Ronin will be my favorite title of theirs.

Let me tell you please. After years of denial I decided that I just had to finish Nioh 2, I bought the remaster on PS5 and I went through half of it already. The game is pretty difficult but you can make it easier by either do all the side quests and level up or play online and summon either offline characters of other players or even invite them to join you in real time. Not only that made it just way more achievable for me but I swear to God Nioh 2 is beyond description just spectacular, the combat is one of the most enjoyable that I have ever seen. There's so much content, so many different weapons, so many different enemies, bosses, armors, just so many different playstyles it's just unbelievable.

When I played Nioh 1 for the first time oh man that game showed me how hard it can be. Then I learned to be a master of sword. When I played Nioh 2 i felt in love from the first minute of it. If someone asked me what game would you like to see and play right now i would say please give me Nioh 3 with nioh 2 mechanics and even maybe something even more deeper. Nioh 2 will always be my NO1 in souls game cause the gameplay is beyond satisfying experience. No other souls game gave me that feeling like Nioh 2 did when i learned to be a master of it.

I'm a Team ninja fan as well (as well as souls player) and I loved SoP, especially once all of its DLC was out, but saying the combat system/mechanics are not as in-depth as a souls game is the dumbest thing I have ever heard (sorry to sound so harsh). Also I disagree as classifying any of these games as "souls-likes" even if their marketing is based around the term. this is because they take much more from their Ninja Gaiden games (especially Nioh) then mechanics that Fromsoft popularized.
Most souls games have a very simple combat system consisting of light attack , heavy attack , magic spells, shield parry, I-frame rolls, bows, some weapon skills and that about sums up combat depth in souls games. Souls games have one mechanic that make everything trivial, the I-frame rolls.
Games like SoP on the other hand have a parry/absorb mechanic, a dual class system with customizable moves of all weapon classes (10-13 total), 35-36 jobs to make builds around, active abilities along with weapon skills (all can be customized and swapped out at any time), passive combat buffs, a DMC style devil trigger mode (3 types once you beat the game and get to the DLC), a job cancel mechanic that adds ton to combat depth and cool combos, fully customizable NPC allies (or you could play solo) and as the cherry on top you have the diablo/looter RPG mechanics/stats that add a ton of repeatability and endgame. Souls games are not even in the same league as SoP and Nioh in terms of combat depth.
People seriously underestimate how deep SoP really is and while its not as mechanically technical as Nioh 2 it has just as much depth in its RPG mechanics and build diversity.
As far as my top modern TN games I would put Wo Long last because it was the most basic and watered down version of their past games (enjoyed the game but doesn't hold a candle to their past games), then Nioh 1, SoP is 2nd, and lastly the king is obviously Nioh 2.

I highly recommend playing with a friend, or waiting for coop partners; n first playthrough of Nioh 2, that and a omnyo build with switchgliave should help make things easier. It feels impossible otherwise. Also another tip, dodge away and wait for an opening to attack, it's not like souls where you dodge and counter.

I find Nioh 2 grossly overrated. So many folks say it improves absolutely everything from 1 but that's untrue. In fact some aspects are straight downgrades. Most people didn't even play 1 or barely touched it. That said I do think 2 is superior, but not by much. SOP however, is easily my favorite. I already loved Final Fantasy so being able to experience it with Team Ninja's immaculate action game design was amazing. I love how they made the job system and iconic FF abilities translate so well into the gameplay and build crafting is so damn fun too (so fun that I spend as much time theorycrafting, fusing, etc as playing the damn game lol). I really hope we get a sequel, which is why I bought multiple copies for my friends and encouraged others to get it.

Yokai burst counters and yokai cores limited the core gameplay loop by forcing the player to use them over and over. Ki pulsing is way easier as well, which lowers the skill ceiling. Living weapon is also dogshit. They removed things like sign of the cross spam etc.

They should have hit this game off solid day 1 if they just kept the same qualities of nioh and improved on them rather than changing a lot of what didn't need to be changed. I get they were trying to make a new IP and deter from Nioh but they really missed the mark on so many levels. Like basic ass things with menu management. Especially after dlc 3 the depth of the game went to another level and the amount of builds you were able to play are insane and gearing is also pretty fun. imo, if you have the patience to get through the frist 3 difficulties and hit endgame you got a gem in strangers, but it took me sure a while to get the motivation.

    My own list:
    1. Nioh 2 - I put thousands of hours in this game. The end game content was just a 10/10 for me
    2. Wo Long - I personally like the combat approach in this game. I was able to see the game as not a Nioh 3 and enjoyed the combat. The deflection itself isnt “deep” like Sekiro’s multiple parry types (like the Mikiri and Jumping) but the other stuff like Wizardry and Build building makes up for it. Satisfied botu my Nioh and Sekiro itch. Plus, it’s really satisfying.
    3. Nioh 1 - nothing really to say. It’s the “less” polished version of Nioh 2 combat. Living weapon was great but if I’m gonna play a Nioh game, I rather play the second one. Still good tho
    4. SoP - never played it but I am eyeing it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that Nioh2 is going to be first on the list.
Edit: I am indeed correct :P
Personally i think Wo long is an actual good game, the problem where this much disappointment is coming from is only two places:
    1. PC players who got arguably one of the worst ports of the decade - i do play on the PC, however i use controller so it's not AS BAD as some people's experiences with it :)
    2. People (like myself) who played Nioh2 and Sekiro (finished like 50 times) and we have the bad habit of comparing it to both games since it's supposed to be a combination of the two. And unfortunately it's not as good as either of them (but still a very good game) but that's only coming from veteran soul/nioh player like myself.
If i played this game before any soulslike i'm sure i would enjoy it MUCH MORE, however it's hard not to compare to their previous game (which i love) and probably my favourite game of all time (Sekiro, and this coming from someone that has played almost all fantasy or medieval themed games on PC's since the 90s)
I think i will save my steam review(not reviewed it) after all 3 DLCs come out, i would like to review the actual finished full product. For Nioh2 at least, my grade jumped from 8 to a 9/10 when including all DLCs.
