I love the game, but you're right. it does try to do too much. But Santa Monica had a decision to make. either spend 15 years trying to complete the norse saga or conclude the story with a sequel and honestly I dont really blame them for this. Game development take 5 years now and not to mention the budget of 200 to 300 million dollars. Im pretty satisfied with the final product tbh.
I think you described a lot of the missed opportunities pretty well. I definitely agree with the Ragnarok Battle and continuity stuff. I remember watching a bunch of videos on the mural and my head canon felt so much cooler than what actually happened lol. I did personally love Freya's involvement in the story though and her side quest were pretty great. Also what was your opinion on a certain character's death which came outta nowhere which leads another character down an emo arc 😅 (I haven't finished the video yet so you might touch on it later lol)
I do touch on it but I really liked it for the most part. I really hope we see Sindri again tho, part of me is fine with his ending being kinda tragic and more open ended but it would also be cool to see him get his conclusion
"Even if the newer games are more story and character foucs" I think that's one of many problems with Ragnarok. They absolutely could've done big Spectacle battles & kept focusing on characters. Devil May Cry 5, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, Elden Ring have found a great balance between both. Great vid as some who loves God Of War, I found Ragnarok to be highly overpraised & nothing special. The Valhalla DLC is WAY better story by a landslide.
Fantastic video man! I still think I prefer ragnarok over the 2018 god of war. But that's more down to its gameplay being just more fun with more enemies types and combat just feeling tighter! I do think the narrative is where it drops the ball quite a bit in places. I'm surprised you didn't mention how Sif convinced Thor to try murder arterus and then at ragnarok when you see her again she's like we're friends now😂 but even though there are a good few parts that feel rushed I still have to say the story overall still feels fantastic!
Thank you so much!! I have no idea how I forgot to mention that part of the Sif/Thor plotline though, but at the same time it's probably normal to not remember every single thing haha. But yeah when talking about the combat Ragnarok did expand on so many things that I can definitely see where you're coming from!
Thing is about the atreus thing. Earlier in the story while in Ironwood Angrboda says that the rest of the giants arent in the nine realms for all she knows. So i think the Atreus game wont be set in the Norse lands as the giants most likely have travelled far far away because well Odin only controls the nine realms. So i think maybe it might set up Atreus going to Egypt or whatever the next mythology is and being jammed in there by the Gods of that land causing Kratos to leave the Norse world to find Atreus because as of rn he doesnt have a reason to. Same with Sigrun, there wouldnt be an emotional moment saying goodbye to Atreus and Sigrun if they were only in the confines of the Norse world as Kratos has easy acess to 8/9 realms (Asgard is destroyed anyways so dont think anyone is going there)
That would be interesting but I'm not sure how to feel about that if that was the case. Right now I don't really like the idea of this saga and the next crossing over to the point that we're still dealing with Norse plotlines in Egypt for example. Having them more seperated gives each of them more of a chance to shine individually, but I guess it could work as a "transition plot" from one to the next so they could definitely pull it off if done right. I was personally thinking more in the lines of the Giants being hidden in some uncharted territory within the realms and there they would find a clue or a reason to explore another mythology. The realms are absolutely massive and all things considered we only explored a small part of them. But I can also see you're theory working considering what Angrboda said, it'll be interesting to see how it goes
Got to the OST part, I expect a segment talking about this again once you finish Xenoblade 3 and experience one of the most epic, catchy, and thematically relevant soundtracks to ever be scored to a piece of media.
I personally think the game is better than ever with the free Valhalla DLC that was released, and more developers should take note on doing something like that once in awhile. Also, I love your Tokyo Ghoul box set and poster man!! Kaneki is the best
That's true, it's insane that they gave it for free. Especially now when it feels like almost every other game is trying to take as much of your money as possible But thanks haha, I really love that manga!
I don't think inferior game mechanics should be praised , where's the swimming's , jumping , QTE kills , wall climbing is a dumb down version from the source material DLC is a glorified therapy session do we really need this? The character has been forgiven many times in the trilogy
@@mr.eternal4439 swimming, jumping, wall climbing... if those are the mechanics you are complaining about then you know the game is solid if not amazing because those are extremely minor game mechanics in the grand scheme of what this game is trying to accomplish. I also think the therapy-based DLC is exactly what the franchise needed and I couldn't be happier with what they did. It doesn't matter how many times someone in the series may tell Kratos they forgive him because what is important to him is that he be able to forgive and accept himself which was the process of this DLC. It was a beautiful character study, and it was free, so if you don't like it then just don't play it. You literally spent no money on this surprise free DLC, so it's not like you lost any money from your own wallet and you're free to stop playing whenever you like
@@Kleed44 Got to love free dlc , but the character seems like a coward blaming others instead of owning his actions , it would of been great if they explored the characters never ending nightmares ,the therapy session would make much more sense, unfortunately the cursed dreams are not a thing anymore in modern GOW , the dlc doesn't accomplish anything but tease the audience nostalgia and waste time The game as it stands now is dull , enhancing the gameplay would add more to it's mechanics , it's falling behind stellar blade , come on now
Honestly 2018 Atreus was okay. The relationship and such with him was alright. But ragnarok Atreus was completely insufferable. Never let me figure shit out. Always complaining. The attitude and back talk. Just the way he talks is annoying. They turned “God of War” into “watch me grow” and it was tough to get through. I get it he’s a teenager awkward phase blah blah blah but this is a GOD OF WAR game. They did too much with Atreus in my opinion.
God of war games used to be fun, now they just turned into another over the shoulder slog that's mostly about cutscenes and dialogue. If I wanted to watch some emo adventure movie, I'd watch that. When I want to game and have fun, I'd rather play one of the original 3.
I heavily disagree with your take on 2018 being “better” than ragnarok. I think that it’s just blatantly false. Saying 2018>Ragnarok is like saying rdr1>rdr2. It’s just objectively not true. Sure ragnarok has problems but 2018 has MORE problems such as the enemy variety, level design, inconsistent side quests and content. Ragnarok fixes all of that. You’re entitled to your opinion but just remember ragnarok is still the best, most critically acclaimed, and public favorite game of the franchise for a reason
@@Arkry_ and pretty much everything else it does better too. 2018 has better pacing. That’s literally it. But you got your own opinion that is a minority to a majority of the fanbase 🤷♂️

Ragnarok has highs that are really high but unlike 2018 Ragnarok actually HAS lows as well

maybe the god of war was the ragnarok we made along the way
