This thing drove me nuts as a kid. Literally all Ariel and Eric had to do was say "kid, your half mermaid, and an evil witch wants to kill you, dont talk to octopus people who live underwater" and every problem is solved! Oy!
No no, the real solution is this: take the kid onto land, Trition goes to evil witch, freezes or kills evil witch, problem solved. Seriously he showed mercy the first time, and look how well that turned out.
Atte Timonen Yeah, that always stuck out for me. It was kind of boring and uncreative. When I first saw Ursula's sister (I don't even remember her name) as a kid I just thought she was a redesigned version of Ursula.
I remember liking the second movie a lot when I was a kid, but even when I was a kid and watched that, that part always stood out to me as extremely stupid and uncreative. I mean really? Couldn't think of anything better? I re watched the movie somewhat recently and saw that it wasn't even as good as I had previously remembered it.
Disney villains had quite a few vengeful siblings, curiously enough. Ursula's sister in Little Mermaid 2 Clayton's sister in Tarzan TV series. Jafar's sister in Aladdin PS1 game.
I thought Melody was a nice enough character. She had some decent lines and, as opposed to Ariel, she actually does play a big roll in fighting Morgana. She had a cute voice and the voice actress is clearly trying her hardest. That's actually Tara Strong as Melody, Voice-Acting Queen of the Bronies herself and, yeah, I think she really fits the role.
Tara Strong voiced a lot of characters. Timmy from Fairly OddParents, Raven from Teen Titans, Twilight Sparkle from MLP, Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls...
Tara Strong's my third favourite Harley Quinn, after Arleen Sorkin and Hynden Walch. It's good that she moved onto better work because she's grown into a legendary voice actress since this movie came out. I think she was ecstatic about having an opportunity to work with Jodi Benson though, so doing this movie wasn't a complete waste of her time.
Haha, made my day :D I even remember an audio book from the beginning of the 1990's that also was a sequel but more like the time between Ariel's wedding and the birth of potential kids: Ursula returns as the villain there! Everyone: We thought you died! And Ursula pretty much says: You all thought that but I'm still alive, ha ha! And at the end she just goes away like "until next time!".
Even when I was a kid and watching the movie the moment I heard Ursula's sister I was like what the heck? (Even though when I was younger I did really enjoy the second movie). Although I had just watched it a year ago or something and saw that it wasn't as good as I remembered it.
As a as a fan of the original, I was a sucker for anything mermaid-related as a kid. And, to be fair, it's not that horrible a movie. But you're right; there's still potential for an interesting story, even if it was just about Melody dealing with being half-mermaid.
I actually related to melody more, a longing for the sea and being lied to for all her life vs giving up everything, family friends ect, for a crush on a human
Okay, the one good scene in this movie is when Ariel runs across Flounder again, and he's actually a father with his own family. Ya gotta admit, that was kinda cute.
Laziness. They don't bother to write clever characters because they assume that most kids would be too dumb to understand logic, so they don't want to invest time and money in something that would likely go unnoticed by their target audience. *TL;DR - Money.*
Ariel's daughter, Melody, is all fangasming over a different world other than her own? She then meets a witch that casts a spell allowing her to enter said world? Melody then proceeds to betray her loved ones and give Triton's trident to said witch? Gee, I wonder where I've heard THAT story before?
To be fair, Ariel never gave Ursula the trident. Ursula just took it when Triton wanted to take Ariel's place to become a weird greyish goopy creature plant thing.
To be fair for Melody - Melody was much younger than Ariel and from her perspective, this nice sea witch just turned her into a mermaid and then gives her a quest to make said state permanent. To Her, this is her Fairy Water Godmother whereas her own mom, like an evil stepmother, kept her from the one thing she loved, as well as lied to her all her life. Mel's old enough to feel teenage indignation yet young and naive enough to not look beyond it, question it -- Ariel at 16 really should've known better.
@@sonadowfangirl30869 That and she never really betrayed her family. Despite going along with it, she was hesitant at the idea of not seeing them again for the sake of living on land.
Has anyone noticed in Disney films especially how in angry scenes when two characters are arguing the parent says deliberately? It's a little odd that I've caught onto this...
I remember when I watched this in VHS as a kid. The only scene that caught my attention (even then) was when Ariel walked up to the small lake near the castle and took off her shoes just to feel the seawater on her skin once again. I still find this scene beautiful to this day...
@@cpotisch Melody is an improvement on Ariel because she actually does grow as a character and her motivations are better shown. Everything else is a step backwards.
You're never too old for mainstream Disney. The "Disney Sequels" ARE for the most part targeted at little kids. There's nothing wrong in admitting that much.
Puremindgames Oh yeah, you CAN watch them, as in you're allowed. Anyone's allowed to watch whatever they want, Doug just meant at the time these movies came out he felt too old for them, which makes complete sense.
Ariel (first movie): "Bet you on land, they understand, bet they don't reprimand their daughters." Ariel (second movie): Spends literally the whole movie reprimanding her daughter
Actually, I think Doug made a mistake at one part of this review. He talks about the party and how Sebastian trashes it and everyone is laughing and Melody leaves crying thinking that it's her fault when it really isn't. However, what he somehow missed was that right when Melody checks on Sebastian asking him if he's okay one girl is like, "Who is she talking too?" And then another guy laughs and says, "She's talking to a crab." Then that's when everyone laughs at her and it's because they are laughing at the fact that she talked to a crab and Melody gets humiliated and runs off crying. I'm not saying that it was Melody's fault I'm just saying that that's the reason why she left upset. So yeah she had a reason to be upset to leave the party. I'm pretty surprised he missed out on that.
Yeeeees, you clearly like the movie! It's so refreshing to find others who like it, cause everyone just constantly hates on it, but I think it's one of the best Disney movies of all time.
I think Doug tuned out when he decided he didn't like it. Because there's so much missing from this review. It's actually a really good movie, one of the best of the Disney sequels. Okay, not better than King of Thieves or Simba's Pride, but it's still one of the better ones.
I thought the dance party scene was to set up character. You know, she can't dance because she's uncoordinated on land instead of in water. She's upset at Sebastian because her friend was an embarrassment and knocked the party off course. She's nervous around the boy because she not socialized and the dance is important. It seemed very spelled out for me.
It's not always about quality: It can also be the experience she has working with the studio, her mood at the time as well as just a role that she feels really comfortable doing. Billy West, despite Stimpy being a big part of what made him a great voice actor, hated doing the scene's where Stimpy was SCREAMING because it almost literally ruined his voice.
I'd be interested to hear his opinion on the Halloween Town movies. The first two I thought were pretty good (although it's been forever since I saw them), the third was outright boring, and the fourth was...meh.
Loved the concept and love the films in general but hate the behavior of the mother in the first two movies. That was out right abusive for the sake of "Normal."
As this was my FAVORITE DISNEY SEQUEL (Next to Return to Neverland) I feel I must address and defend some of Critics complaints and concerns. Even as a kid when I first seen this movie, I was in love. I understood everything that was happening, why it happened and the songs we're so catchy to me that TO THIS DAY I sing them from time to time. Melody is a fish out of water kinda girl. She's feels more comfortable around the sea and its people than around people and Ariel knows this. This is why she's crossing her fingers at the ball hoping for the best; that her daughter will have a good time and everyone will like her. Melody finds a cute boy at the party that offers her to dance, which by looking at her feet as she does she's probably never dances like that before. (Ballroom dancing) The crab (I cant speak his name) accidentally ruins the party and sends cake flying over Melody. Everyone laughs and Melody feels humiliated, so she runs away crying. Ariel later tries to comfort her daughter but Melody finds a locket proving that her mother has been hiding a secret from her. This gets them both into ANOTHER disagreement. (which you can tell they have by there chemistry in earlier parts of the movie) Eric sees that once again they gotten into another disagreement and believes now is the time to tell Melody the truth, so he goes to Ariel to tell her to come clean as it was her idea to hide the truth from Melody. (FAST FOWARDING MOVIE DETAILS) Eric dosent go with Ariel into the sea bcuz Ariel knows the sea best and he instead chooses to search for his daughter ABOVE land using his ship while Ariel searches below the water. Later Melody is told King Triton stolen the tritan from Morgana, and why wouldnt she belive that story? Melody is an impressionable 12 yr old child that has just found out that her own mother has been lying and hiding secrets from her without much reason. And the only woman that has gave her what she wanted it a seemingly kind sea witch. Just like ARIEL shouldnt have known better than to trust Ursala the obviously evil sea witch to give her what she wanted in the first movie. Ariel was 16 yrs old and clearly old enough to make her better choices but bcuz of her overprotective father she went with someone who would help her. (So if you wanna call Melody dumb for that, then blame her mother first.) lol _______________________________________________________ OVERALL the Animation is abit flat but atleast they tried and I actually like the look of the movie. Its WAY better than those god aweful Tarzan sequel. Not all the music is memorable but I cherish these songs. I understand that wont be the same with everyone. lol The movie isnt perfect but nor was the FIRST movie in my opinion. Hopefully if anyone reads all this, they will have better understanding of why things happened. xD
I hate to dignify this movie with in-depth analysis, but here I go. Why did they have to keep the truth from Melody in the first place? And when Ariel finds Melody, why can't she just be like "yeah, sorry I lied, but that's an evil witch right there who lied to you"? Also, the dialogue is atrocious (e.g., "Ursula's crazy sister!"). Plus, it's an incredibly obvious and predictable plot, used in so many other lazy sequels. The villain from the first movie died, so now we're dealing with her crazy sister (played by the same actress), and the protagonist of the first one wanted a new life, so now her daughter wants to go back to the old one. You just know they spent no more than five minutes writing the plot. Also, when you say you "cant speak his name," do you literally mean that you don't know his name is Sebastian? It's mentioned a thousand times. If you're so passionate about these movies, how would you not know that?
I never saw the movie, so I don't know the context of the situation, but "crossing your fingers" is an old Good Luck charm. So I would guess that is the reason she was doing it.
okay i though of some options: A - They doing the thing form Swan princess, make her be interrested about a boy , years later make a wedding and 2 kingdoms dont go to war ( thou who would fuck with a kingdom wich is alied to one that can control the oceans? ) B - Maybe the party was of an important political matter - its similar to A but its without squedule wedding (Its mediaval-ish times, i think that was the goal) C - The Daugther never went to one of this partys and Ariel is hoping this will draw her attentio from the ocean.. Thats about all i could think of it... asides just being there for... reason?
Constant human faces..............Lady and the Tramp actually sing..................recycled adventure...............catch phrases..................Good luck Doug. On the plus side it's not Hunchback 2.
Lady and the Tramp 2 was my childhood Disney sequel along with Simba's Pride - I had it memorized, including all the songs. I haven't seen it in forever now though, I wonder if I still like it... Yeah, the story's pretty generic. I still love the songs though (like Family and I Didn't Know That I Could Feel This Way)
I actually really loved the songs as a kid, especially "For A Moment". I even taught it to myself on piano from a book of Disney sheet music when I was about 12. I just always felt like the chords were telling her feelings even more than the lyrics, and that was what always grabbed me when I heard it.
I kinda liked Cinderella 3. The one where the godmather steals the wand. I thought it was pretty good with a really good plot. They even give the prince a personality! it seems as if he specifically wanted her and not just the woman who would fit that shoe I think you should do that next critic!
@@brackthomasfischer6139 Plotwise, she is a passive character. She doesn't *make* things happen most of the time, things happen *to* her. The third movie had her *doing* things instead of having things be *done* to her.
@@VNightmoon She’s the one who tried getting out of her room. She bangs and screams on the door, demanding to be let out unlike in the 2015 remake when she doesn’t even try to get out. She’s the one who tells her bird friends to go and get her dog Bruno to scare away Lucifer. She’s the one who defies Lady Tremaine and tries on her glass slipper. “But you see I have the other slipper!” That’s the issue I take with people saying “Oh she’s so much more badass in the 3rd movie which completely disregards her abuse and inner strength in the first movie. She remains hopeful and kind. Her happily ever after was deserved in the first movie as well!! Her quick wit and kindness is what saved her and her kindness made her animal friends want to help her in her time of need. People don’t realize by saying “She’s weak” they are victim blaming her. I recommend watching this video on defending Cinderella. ruclips.net/video/huLSdm6IH0g/видео.html
Director: So who's gonna be the villain of the movie? Producer: We have to think really hard about this.. Samuel E. Wright (Sebastian's V.A): URSULA'S CRAZY SISTER! Writer: That's so good I'm using that exact quote in the script! Heck, I've already recorded it!
Would've been really funny if Ariel had a secret meeting with her father and told him how headstrong and curious Melody is and he said, "Gee, I wonder where she got THAT from!"
I actually liked this one as a kid. I can relate to Melody. I like how she's not a perfect and proper princess. Also, I went to a panel at Phoenix Comic-con a few years ago and Tara Strong (Melody) talked about how much she loved getting to meet Jodi Benson and it was adorable.
Another annoying thing was Ariel's "adult" design. They changed the eyes. And that's ALL. Ariel's eyes were almost constantly open in the original Little Mermaid, but in this they're always semi-lidded, as if she's been popping Ambien all through the movie.
MasterHappychipmunk Moana was basically The Little Mermaid II done right. The sequel had a lot of potential but sadly squandered. I wonder what John Lasseter thinks of this movie?
@@burningexeter4365 John Lasseter hated this movie so much, and cited this film as the reason why DisneyToon Studios should permanently end the practice of direct-to-video sequels as of 2008 after The Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's Beginning.
To be fair, Ariel is already 30+ years old in the movie, plus she has been living in the human world for 10+. So it's no surprise she isn't acting all "ooooh, aaaaah" like in the first movie.
In the prequel she's 15, in the Little Mermaid she's 16, in this movie she's 17 at the beginning and 29 at the end of the movie. Ariel is the only Disney princess that's allowed to age and have a canon child. She a mom.
Also it makes sense that her emotions would be toned down now that she's 12+ years older and a mother figure. I thought the animation showed how mature she had gotten.
I'm going to get a lot of comments on this, but I like this movie a lot. Not because The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney films, but because I love the character of Melody. Yeah the story is the same as the first movie, but I just can't see myself fully hating it. I also like how Ariel and Melody's relationship is. Sure it's flawed (and so is the whole movie I'll admit), but I do like how both were able to realize their mistakes towards the third act and to be fair, Ariel thought (key word being thought) she was doing the right choice by protecting her daughter from something she considered dangerous. She just wanted her daughter safe, but once she realized her mistake, she did what she had to do to correct it. In short, yes the movie is not perfect nor are Melody and Ariel, but as a huge TLM fan, I cannot hate this movie whatsoever. Plus, Tara Strong is Melody. That is all I need to say. And yes, I even liked Ariel's Beginning.
For me, this movie is kind of a mixed bag. I really enjoyed it when I was younger and it does have that nostalgic quality to it, but I did start to notice some of the problems as I got older. What's really funny is that this video has actually exposed new problems that I never even noticed. Still, this movie has a special place for me for a few reasons. For one thing, this was a historic movie in the sense that it's the first (and only) time that a Disney Princess has been shown becoming a mother and, since Ariel has always been my favorite out of the Disney Princesses, it makes it all the more special. Another thing is that the character of Melody was voiced by Tara Strong. Hello!!! It's Tara Freakin Strong!!! She is a literal goddess among voice actors, who can do no wrong IMO. And with that said, like Doug mentioned, she can be an interesting character at times when she's not suffering from bad character writing. When it comes to the songs, the funny thing is that songs in the Disney direct-to-DVD sequels have one of several effects on me. Sometimes I remember them and like them, sometimes I remember them and don't care much for them, sometimes I remember them and they're a mixed bag for me, and sometimes they're just totally forgotten. For example, I can't remember any songs from The Return Of Jafar or Belle's Magical World, but I do remember songs from Aladdin And The King Of Thieves, The Lion King II, and this movie. While most of the songs in The Little Mermaid II aren't anything special, I do genuinely enjoy the song "For A Moment" because of, among other things, the fact that it showed Tara Strong can actually sing and sing well (though, if that's the case, it's got me wondering why in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic she only voices the character of Twilight Sparkle, but someone else does her singing voice, but I digress). Apparently, Morgana had a song that was going to be included in this movie, but it was cut because, sadly, Pat Carroll's singing voice had deteriorated badly. With that said, I'm not going to act like this movie doesn't have problems. "Timon and Pumba of the ocean" aren't really funny, the majority of the characters suffer from bad writing, I just realized how Disney was doing the "Frozen" solution to a problem over a decade before it even came out, and, most importantly, the story was wasted for what it could've been. To paraphrase a favorite guilty pleasure of mine, "It had such potential, such promise, but they squandered their gifts." This is a movie that I'd probably watch for nostalgia's sake and still enjoy somewhat, but it's not one that I'd go out of my way to watch.
1) Before Frozen 2) Sebastion is complaining because Melody is impossible (just like Ariel and he's sick of the job) 3) she's been TRYING for TWELVE years to fix the shark and keeps failing and the shark doesn't think she'll ever manage it cause her magic is weak 4) Melody does consider talking to fish weird and mentions that to Sebastion 5) is incredibly awkward and KNOWS she's incredible awkward and a klutz on top of that 6) has made a fool of herself before so people are scared she'd do it again 7) Melody was upset that everyone was LAUGHING at her (princess of disaster) 8) Ariel had been lying to her her entire life and Melody's basically a teenager what do you expect 9) Morgana gave Melody all she ever wanted for free and Melody still feels betrayed by her parents so yes she believes the incredibly nice random stranger 10) ERIC WAS SEARCHING IN HIS SHIP and "directing the search on land." They even mention that! 11) Melody DOES hesitate about the entire betrayal AND stealing the trident (he doesn't look evil, etc)- she gave it to Morgana out of SPITE because Ariel was a mermaid and REALLY had been lying to her big time; and she immediately regrets it. Doug, did you WATCH the damn film?! If you're going to criticize the film, make sure your criticisms are VALID. There are stupid things in the film and Ariel and Melody both act really dumb at times (Ariel should have known better than to act EXACTLY LIKE HER FATHER and Melody should have known that nobody is THAT nice) but all of your questions HAVE explanations in the film itself.
I agree with both of you. The movie may not have done a good job of going into depth with the characters, but a lot of Doug's criticisms were invalid. And I can DEFINITELY agree on the whole 'looking after kids' thing. I don't have any, but I have babysat before. Parental/authority figures are expected to get frustrated when the child/children they're looking after are difficult to deal with. I especially am familliar with difficult kids. For about a year, I babysat four brothers of different ages weekly for four hours at a time. Lord know's there was rarely a dull moment with them.
I love the fact that Ariel is the only official Disney Princess to have a baby, and that child growing and becoming a princess as well XD I always thought that was cool! :3 the movie i think is... okay i dunno i found it interesting when i was a kid XD but i guess it is pretty stupid anyways
I hate to break it to ya, but this is one of Tara Strong's favorite roles. Well, at least it's one of her favorite voice acting experiences. Because she LOVED the first Little Mermaid and adored Jodi Benson as Ariel. So to be in a sequel of Little Mermaid movie voicing the daughter of Ariel, that was just a total win for her.
That was Tara? Great!!! I just saw it again after so long and I really like this performance, even thou the character herself was not quite well written.
Ben Wasserman Neither did I. I figured that out watching some interviews and convention panels she attended and she mentioned that because she was asked what was her favorite role or experience.
Based off her interviews, her personal top 3 she's referred to are: Melody from here, Toot Braunstein from Drawn Together (she actually said while doing that show it was the most fun role she's ever done and that she really loved how vulgar and offensive she got to be as her), and Raven of Teen Titans (explaining how she loved the process of creating the voice for the character and also thank god she wasn't referring to Go)
ToonReel001 What'd you expect? The PPG reboot shunned her, Fairly Odd Parents is running on fumes, everyone knows how much Teen Titans Go sucks camel dick, when was the last time Harley Quinn was in a Batman story? Twilight Sparkle is really her signature role, and she still nails it.
Patrick Kelmer You probably didn't know that Clara was voiced by Tara Strong while she voiced herself as a parody Disney princess of Princess Clara in "Drawn Together." Wow, she does make fun of every Disney princess cliches and probably makes out with that Foxxy's black chick tongue.
I liked it as a kid. Now.... yeah the characters getting angry at each other are forced. Like Ariel getting mad at Melody for going through the wall seems too mean spirited, even if she does have a reason to worry. If anything, the parents were awful. But this indeed could have been a legit good sequel. But no disagreeing that it was rushed and half-assed.
I remember this being one of my favourite movies when I was little. I loved it more than the first little mermaid. I really liked Melody, her appearance, her songs, her dream to be a mermaid like many little girls like me and I just loved her name! I remember also love the Arctic setting, it was something new from the first movie. I haven't watched it in ages but I can still hum every song. I'm not sure if I want to keep the memory fuzzy in order to save my nostalgia...
How can you miss this spoken fact, Doug: When Ariel returned to the sea to look for Melody, they DID say that Eric was going to take his ship and see if he can find their daughter on the surface of the sea. "Eric did nothing"? He did DO something! This mess-up is as bad as you believing that "the Butler from the Aristocats was going to inherent the cats, and he wanted to get rid of them because he hates cats" when really: the money was going to go to the cats and once they're gone, the riches would go to the Butler! I hate it when people say characters don't do anything when they clearly do!
It's a shame; as someone who's talked to Tara Strong, she said that this is both her favorite role and a dream come true after she saw the original Little Mermaid as a teen.
My guess? Subpar animators that don't know how to draw kids as kids. You see it a ton in comics where teenagers are just scaled down adult proportions, etc.
This was my favorite of the Disney sequels, I think. Is it perfect? No, but to be fair, there's no such thing as perfect. Regardless, I freakin' love it! Doug was clearly not paying attention, though, because there was plenty of things to answer all his "we don't know why"-isms in those scenes. And those that aren't are easy to pick up on knowing how we act in these scenarios in real life. Ariel crosses her fingers - because Melody is the kind of kid who's a klutz on land. Melody's afraid to dance - because she's a teenage girl who's just noticing boys for the first time. Melody glances down at her feet - again, klutz. Nobody blaming Melody for ruining the party - Uh, NO! They were making fun of her for talking to Sebastian, which you literally just addressed. Look, start paying attention if you're going to be doing reviews like this. If you hated it, fine, whatever, but at least get the fucking details right.
Like a lot of sequels they disregard the logic of the 1st film. Like in the 1st one Ursula was banished for some unspecified crime. So what about Morgana? Was she also banished? Also why would Arial not warn her daughter of Morgana so that she can recognise a threat when she sees it? Since they bang on and on about how Morgana's magic is weaker than Ursula's and they defeated her, why worry about Morgana? Especially since the humans and mermaids are now on the same side so are stronger than before? Its almost like the writers wrote this in a week or something.
That being said i think this could of been good if they did some rewrites andd had more time to work on it. Its certainly one of the better looking ones like just compere it to the Aladdin Lion King Atlantis and Hunchback sequels which are of a lesser quality than world war 2 propaganda cartoons.
I'm surprised that he actually kind of liked Melody and Morgana. I thought he would rip them apart! Sure he doesn't love them, but I guess he kind of likes them, which is better than hate or disliking them. I do agree that this movie is flawed but I still love it! Does that mean that I think it's good? No, it's mediocre at best! But I like the songs, the animation is pretty, Melody is a fantastic and well-written character, and Morgana is cool (though nothing fantastic). I do think this is a great concept and, while this sounds dumb, I hope to work at Disney someday and actually remake these sequels to have better plots and writing. We are shown Melody's fascination with the sea during the song For A Moment but, yeah, it is just "for a moment." The only thing about this movie I will ALWAYS 100% defend is Melody being an awesome character! It's flawed and mediocre but I love it for nostalgic reasons, so it's a guilty pleasure.
I remember watching this with a couple of neighborhood kids to get them to like me... LOL ... I felt the exact same way as you said.... I love the way it was going, but it was just not doing it for me...
If you think about it, sea Timon and Pumbaa, despite having some pretty obvious similarities, were actually polar opposites in terms of what they were trying to achieve. Timon and Pumbaa's goal was to live life as carefree hobos, and they were pretty successful at it. Tip and Dash's goal was to go out and risk their necks as heroes, yet throughout most of the movie they suck at it. Also, their song is a guilty pleasure of mine. Best thing to come out of this movie. And Max Casella's voice is always a joy to hear. Jak and Daxter fans will find that penguin sounding awfully familiar...
Okay, I *love* this movie!! I've always been obsessed with Ariel and this sequel totally works for me. I like Melody as a character, I love the songs, I like the movie's message, I like the plot and Morgana is a decent villain.
I loved Melody in this. Something about her personality and energy was adorable to me from the start. Morgana, Ursula's sister, though... she felt kinda weak compared to her sister who was really bold and amazing.
Is Ariel still considered a princess even if she is married to a prince, rules a kingdom and has a daughter? isn't that the definition of a queen? i've never heard anyone call her "queen ariel" tho
She's not Atlantida heir and no one never adressed Eric as king, so maybe they aren't the rulers? Maybe Eric has an older sibling who's the king/queen or his parents are still alive.
Could be like England's royal line. The ruling monarch has to give you a title. Queen Elizabeth's husband is a prince, as she never named him as king. In fact, England won't have a king until she passes, then there will be a coronation for Charles.
Personally, I think the only thing this movie had going for it was Tara Strong as Melody. Also, please do The Tigger Movie this year. I've been asking for this LITERALLY since Disneycember Year 1.
I was quite young when this came out and actually loved it even more than the first one. I found Melody very relatable, and Ariel is a much better character as an adult and I think having to go through the same things her father did is very clever. I loved the new villain and the side kicks and the songs are so catchy and sometimes very touching. Also so glad about the expressions being dulled down, it was way to much in the first one, like a tv show or something, this was so much better.
I watched the original as a kid and fell in love with it. Truly a great film. I remember seeing ads for this and never saw it as a kid and really wanted to. I'm sure if I got to see it I would have enjoyed it.
"The songs are forgettable" TITANIC TIP AND DARING DASH ADVENTURERS SLASH EXPLORERS TITANIC TIP AND DARING DASH ADVENTURERS SLASH EXPLORERS THEY'LL SAVE THE DAY AND SOMETHING SOMETHING TITANIC TIP AND DARING DASH. When I get this song stuck in my head, it's stuck for fucking years at a time. Dammit, it's back.
as a little kid, this was my absolute favorite and I actually understood Melody and connected with her a lot more than I ever even will with Ariel in the first movie. It's really just because of their reasonings, Melody longed for the sea and was completely denied it and not to forget she was 12 during the main events, Ariel on the other hand completely gave up her entire life including all her family and friends just because she had a crush on a human? these are really the one thing that the sequel has over the original, but considering it's a sequel made to get kids to sit in front of the tv it's an aspect that's really big, and for 6-year-old me, was the reason I kept on going back to that movie. In fact, the movies I watched most was those two, Quest for Camelot, and The Prince of Egypt... yeah that last fact wasn't really needed but this entire comment wasn't also.
For the whole month, it's gonna consist of: It sucked. It's not good, it's not awful. It's middle of the road. It was kind of okay. Ehhhh..... Awful. Bland.
And with the sequel reviews over, he actually....had a fair amount he could say good things about. A few even sounded more positive than some of the original Disney films (he seemed quite fond of Tarzan II and 101 Dalmatians 2, while Bambi II and Cinderella III got the 'flawed but impressive' ranking).
Let's just pray and hope that Disney doesn't get the idea of remaking this movie into live-action, that is....*IF* they intend to remake the Little Mermaid into live-action. *shivers!!!!*
I like this movie. I am glad that Ariel and Eric has a daughter. It is great to see her daughter turn into mermaid. Ursula's sister is okay, but Ursula is one of great villains in Disney animation movies, even Ursula's song (Poor Unfortunate Souls) is in the Disney legacy collection CD (The Little Mermaid).
Does it even matter at this point?! They're both terrible, it's just that they both suck in different ways. With TLM II, it's bland, uninspiring and pretty much a shameful rehashing of the original movie, but this time, Melody wants to be a mermaid and there's no male love interest or anything at stake here. TLM: Ariel's Beginning is just....."meh!", and the animation isn't really all that great, plus, the villain is kind of forgettable. But at least it has an original plot?!
Ursula vs Jafar: The Big Showdown; Lion King V: the Quickening; Pocahontas' Bizarre Adventures; Seven Dwarfs go Hawaiin; Frozen Rising 2: Revengeance; Snow white: the She-Wolf of Magical Kingdom; Great Mouse Detective from Outer Space
I really love Jodi Benson's voice, she's the voice of Ariel after all. Ariel is my most favorite character mermaid princess. I also love her singing she has a very beautiful singing voice. Thank You Jodi Benson for bringing your character and my favorite mermaid princess character to life. I really love Ariel a lot. God Bless Her.
This thing drove me nuts as a kid. Literally all Ariel and Eric had to do was say "kid, your half mermaid, and an evil witch wants to kill you, dont talk to octopus people who live underwater" and every problem is solved! Oy!

Aaaand I'm done.
Atte Timonen Yeah, that always stuck out for me. It was kind of boring and uncreative. When I first saw Ursula's sister (I don't even remember her name) as a kid I just thought she was a redesigned version of Ursula.
Lindsay Ellis was particularly brutal about it in her review
yarpen26 maybe it was an excuse to take over?
I remember liking the second movie a lot when I was a kid, but even when I was a kid and watched that, that part always stood out to me as extremely stupid and uncreative. I mean really? Couldn't think of anything better? I re watched the movie somewhat recently and saw that it wasn't even as good as I had previously remembered it.
The only thing I remember about her is that I liked her name, Morgana

Henrique Carballo Aranha well she said that as a 16-year-old and now she's 30/40something

Tara Strong is so awesome ❤️
Tara Strong voiced a lot of characters. Timmy from Fairly OddParents, Raven from Teen Titans, Twilight Sparkle from MLP, Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls...
Tara Strong's my third favourite Harley Quinn, after Arleen Sorkin and Hynden Walch. It's good that she moved onto better work because she's grown into a legendary voice actress since this movie came out. I think she was ecstatic about having an opportunity to work with Jodi Benson though, so doing this movie wasn't a complete waste of her time.

I even remember an audio book from the beginning of the 1990's that also was a sequel but more like the time between Ariel's wedding and the birth of potential kids: Ursula returns as the villain there! Everyone: We thought you died! And Ursula pretty much says: You all thought that but I'm still alive, ha ha! And at the end she just goes away like "until next time!".
I remember Nostalgia chick talking about it and her only reaction was writing Lazy on a piece of paper and showing it to the camera.
I hate Bowser Jr. but at least he was established better and it didn't seem like he just spawned into existence out of nowhere.
Even when I was a kid and watching the movie the moment I heard Ursula's sister I was like what the heck? (Even though when I was younger I did really enjoy the second movie). Although I had just watched it a year ago or something and saw that it wasn't as good as I remembered it.
3:38 "[The sound of a man who is dead inside]"
These captions are great.
IKR?
It had so much potential!
And it would've been nice to have Melody be more conflicted over who she really is.
I agree so much. I really like Melody too.
Okay, the one good scene in this movie is when Ariel runs across Flounder again, and he's actually a father with his own family. Ya gotta admit, that was kinda cute.
Why are most kids movies so damn bad at writing kid characters? It's really not that hard.
Laziness. They don't bother to write clever characters because they assume that most kids would be too dumb to understand logic, so they don't want to invest time and money in something that would likely go unnoticed by their target audience.
*TL;DR - Money.*
How was your kids characters?
Hollywood just wants to make money, but don’t wanna actually...try
Mel's old enough to feel teenage indignation yet young and naive enough to not look beyond it, question it -- Ariel at 16 really should've known better.
true, true.

Ariel (first movie): "Bet you on land, they understand, bet they don't reprimand their daughters."
Ariel (second movie): Spends literally the whole movie reprimanding her daughter
Why is that? Care to elaborate?
Yeah even with that explanation, it's still a pretty dumb setup.
I think Doug tuned out when he decided he didn't like it. Because there's so much missing from this review. It's actually a really good movie, one of the best of the Disney sequels. Okay, not better than King of Thieves or Simba's Pride, but it's still one of the better ones.
@@welcometothemetaverse2523 It's dumb that she'd be upset because people make fun of her for going against society's idea of normalcy?
I thought the dance party scene was to set up character. You know, she can't dance because she's uncoordinated on land instead of in water. She's upset at Sebastian because her friend was an embarrassment and knocked the party off course. She's nervous around the boy because she not socialized and the dance is important. It seemed very spelled out for me.
Fun fact: Melody is Tara Strong's favorite role she's ever done. Odd pick, right?
I can imagine her liking the role but her favorite? Not Twilight Sparkle, Bubbles, Harley Quinn or my personal favorite, Raven from Teen Titans?
It's not always about quality: It can also be the experience she has working with the studio, her mood at the time as well as just a role that she feels really comfortable doing. Billy West, despite Stimpy being a big part of what made him a great voice actor, hated doing the scene's where Stimpy was SCREAMING because it almost literally ruined his voice.
I thought her favourite role was Twilight Sparkle nowadays.
Didn't she once say it was the characters she voiced in Drawn Together?

Next December, Disney channel original movies. Some of those are really good.
That's...actually a good idea (like the first two High School Musical movies, he only reviewed the third one because it had a theatrical release)
I'd be interested to hear his opinion on the Halloween Town movies. The first two I thought were pretty good (although it's been forever since I saw them), the third was outright boring, and the fourth was...meh.
I've thought that for awhile. I want to see him talk about some of the early ones that really did have a message to them.
Loved the concept and love the films in general but hate the behavior of the mother in the first two movies. That was out right abusive for the sake of "Normal."
I never saw Holes, but I heard it doesn't suck. Pretty sure it was one of Shia Labeouf's early roles, too.
(Ballroom dancing)
The crab (I cant speak his name) accidentally ruins the party and sends cake flying over Melody. Everyone laughs and Melody feels humiliated, so she runs away crying. Ariel later tries to comfort her daughter but Melody finds a locket proving that her mother has been hiding a secret from her. This gets them both into ANOTHER disagreement. (which you can tell they have by there chemistry in earlier parts of the movie)
Eric sees that once again they gotten into another disagreement and believes now is the time to tell Melody the truth, so he goes to Ariel to tell her to come clean as it was her idea to hide the truth from Melody.
(FAST FOWARDING MOVIE DETAILS)
Eric dosent go with Ariel into the sea bcuz Ariel knows the sea best and he instead chooses to search for his daughter ABOVE land using his ship while Ariel searches below the water.
(So if you wanna call Melody dumb for that, then blame her mother first.) lol

Hopefully if anyone reads all this, they will have better understanding of why things happened. xD
YO ViViO That's a good point. Eric was never a Merman so how would he be able to help look for Melody when she's UNDERWATER
"For me this definitely flounders" Just had to end it on a pun, didn't you Critic.
But forreal though...why did Ariel cross her fingers?
I never saw the movie, so I don't know the context of the situation, but "crossing your fingers" is an old Good Luck charm. So I would guess that is the reason she was doing it.
okay i though of some options:
A - They doing the thing form Swan princess, make her be interrested about a boy , years later make a wedding and 2 kingdoms dont go to war ( thou who would fuck with a kingdom wich is alied to one that can control the oceans? )
B - Maybe the party was of an important political matter - its similar to A but its without squedule wedding (Its mediaval-ish times, i think that was the goal)
C - The Daugther never went to one of this partys and Ariel is hoping this will draw her attentio from the ocean..
Thats about all i could think of it... asides just being there for... reason?
TaiTai even as a child I asked that question
Or just the simplest answer of all: Ariel hoped that Melody's birthday party would go well.
I always thought she was signaling to the composer to play a specific song to help melody dance or something like that

To be fair, Ariel is already 30+ years old in the movie, plus she has been living in the human world for 10+. So it's no surprise she isn't acting all "ooooh, aaaaah" like in the first movie.
It's not Ariel he's concerned about, it's Melody.
He compares Ariel's expressions at one point
Love your Maria Torres pic 👌. That's one of my fav games btw.
The voice actor for Tip the penguin previously played Timon in The Lion King on Broadway. I don't think this was a coincidence. xD
I love the fact that Ariel is the only official Disney Princess to have a baby, and that child growing and becoming a princess as well XD I always thought that was cool! :3
the movie i think is... okay
i dunno
i found it interesting when i was a kid XD but i guess it is pretty stupid anyways
i think she is. Cant remember any other that had a daughter or son :/ maybe im wrong tho
Esmeralda is the only other human female character to have a kid in a sequel, so Ariel is the only princess.
Lance Clearman Unless you count Nala, Ariel is the only princess to have a child in general. No one else has had a kid.
Lance Clearman Anna .ight get one in the sequals
***** i said maybe she might get one, shes married theres sequals coming,so it might happen,.
All I could think during this movie was "poor Tara Strong"
I hate to break it to ya, but this is one of Tara Strong's favorite roles. Well, at least it's one of her favorite voice acting experiences. Because she LOVED the first Little Mermaid and adored Jodi Benson as Ariel. So to be in a sequel of Little Mermaid movie voicing the daughter of Ariel, that was just a total win for her.
The Animated Freak Huh.... well I did not see that coming
That was Tara? Great!!! I just saw it again after so long and I really like this performance, even thou the character herself was not quite well written.
Ben Wasserman Neither did I. I figured that out watching some interviews and convention panels she attended and she mentioned that because she was asked what was her favorite role or experience.
Oh, shut up you self-centered ass.
fun fact: Melody is one of Tara Strong's favorite roles
Drew Myself So The Voice of Twilight Sparkle voiced a mermaid? Interesting......
How about Sari Sumdac, from Transformers Animated? Is she at least among Tara's favs?
Based off her interviews, her personal top 3 she's referred to are: Melody from here, Toot Braunstein from Drawn Together (she actually said while doing that show it was the most fun role she's ever done and that she really loved how vulgar and offensive she got to be as her), and Raven of Teen Titans (explaining how she loved the process of creating the voice for the character and also thank god she wasn't referring to Go)
Surprised Twilight Sparkle isn't one of her top ones, it's becoming more and more her signature role (though maybe that IS the reason why).

ASIAN MERMAID BOY?
fucking weeaboo
cannonfodder4000 He's Chinese to make the sea communist.
does he still eat sushi?
cannonfodder4000 Ariel had an Indian (i think) freind who was deaf and used real ASL @❤
Yes!!
Regarding the animation: Ariel looks like Clara from Drawn Together here!
Patrick Kelmer
How ironic
She really does.
FR 87 Tara Strong also plays Toot, batgirl, harley and timmy turner
"And... yeah, it sucked" Any suprises there?
One can only imagine the "talk" Eric had to give Ariel on human sex...
Boy, that'd have been a night to remember.
I actually liked this movie as a little girl...
same here, honestly. though i was maybe 4-6 at the time.
Next up should be Lady and tramp 2, followed by Cinderella 2.
They're reviewing them in release order
So those will be the next 2
Electric Skittles Doug skipped Pooh's Grand Adventure and Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas
i think Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas will be covered on Christmas.
Jkop l day and the tramp 2 is good.
WiiGuy2014 ty!!!
Don't forget Cinderella.
Plus Eric saved Melody from Undertow in the beginning of the movie and was just overall a very supportive husband to Ariel.
Well good news, Disney just made a movie about a princess being called to the ocean…
It's called Moana
Mauricio Vasquez and it's FANTASTIC
Mauricio Vasquez haven't seen it
Disney: You're welcome 😉
Airista Harns I see what you did there 😂
Also the recent animated film Song Of The Sea.
Selkies > Mermaids
I did have a crush on Melody when I was younger
I myself used to have a crush on Ariel.
Crisdean Mackinnon I have a crush on Ariel
It's a shame; as someone who's talked to Tara Strong, she said that this is both her favorite role and a dream come true after she saw the original Little Mermaid as a teen.
5:39 - 5:42 Jesus these kids are in killer shape.
Chris Montgomery It's just all the drugs that get flushed into the sea.
...what exactly were the animators going for in this scene? lol :P
My guess? Subpar animators that don't know how to draw kids as kids. You see it a ton in comics where teenagers are just scaled down adult proportions, etc.
ARE YOU DOING LION KING 1 1/2? I FREAKING LOVE THAT MOVIE, IT'S HILARIOUS.
Thank you ☝☝☝☝
You know that's Tara Strong's all time favorite role she was excited to meet Ariel and work with her Doug 👍❤️
The sea people probably paid for the wall too lol
DarthAlphaTheGreat lmfao
This was my favourite Disney sequel when I was young.
I have no idea why????
I can't wait till you review Lady and the Tramp 2, featuring Disney's only pediphilic villain......
???
I watched that movie and don't remember it that well. Which villain is this? lol
losnf jslefn Buster (the ADULT villain) is romantically pursuing a puppy.
9TheMiddleMan9 Oh yeah! Now I remember rofl! Yeah, that was pretty bad :P
You liar, Scar isn't in that movie.
"That's my girl ;3"
The part where Eric does not give a shit about his daughter always makes me speechless.
Okay, I *love* this movie!! I've always been obsessed with Ariel and this sequel totally works for me. I like Melody as a character, I love the songs, I like the movie's message, I like the plot and Morgana is a decent villain.
Eric’s grand idea to protect his daughter: “We will build a wall and make the merpeople pay for it!”
I loved Melody in this. Something about her personality and energy was adorable to me from the start. Morgana, Ursula's sister, though... she felt kinda weak compared to her sister who was really bold and amazing.
URSULA'S CRAZY SISTAH!
Is Ariel still considered a princess even if she is married to a prince, rules a kingdom and has a daughter? isn't that the definition of a queen? i've never heard anyone call her "queen ariel" tho
In some countries the main chief if a prince, not a king. Look Monaco, for example
She's not Atlantida heir and no one never adressed Eric as king, so maybe they aren't the rulers? Maybe Eric has an older sibling who's the king/queen or his parents are still alive.
I think with Disney it's you are female and have are royal/have a royal connection = princess
"The songs are forgettable"
TITANIC TIP AND DARING DASH ADVENTURERS SLASH EXPLORERS TITANIC TIP AND DARING DASH ADVENTURERS SLASH EXPLORERS THEY'LL SAVE THE DAY AND SOMETHING SOMETHING TITANIC TIP AND DARING DASH.
When I get this song stuck in my head, it's stuck for fucking years at a time. Dammit, it's back.
Yeah I disagree that the songs are forgettable. I still remember most of them to this day.
Where does this take place? Why are there penguins and walruses and ice?
I never thought about that...It's supposed to be Denmark, I believe.
@@eswan8900 Probably cos the original tale was first written in Denmark
I have always liked Melody more than Ariel. I understand her plight and her reason for leaving. She had a legitimate reason. Ariel didn't.
as a little kid, this was my absolute favorite and I actually understood Melody and connected with her a lot more than I ever even will with Ariel in the first movie.
“ Ursula’s crazy sister” should definitely be a term to describe any OC added to sequels that weren’t ever established in the first film .
For the whole month, it's gonna consist of:
It sucked.
It's not good, it's not awful.
It's middle of the road.
It was kind of okay.
Ehhhh.....
Awful.
Bland.
Jean-Pierre Moreno
Pretty Much.
People asked for it.
(They were so focused on whether or not Doug could, but never stopped to think if he should.)
I was kind of surprised with the ones he didn't absolutely hate. But I agree with him most on Return to Neverland (easily the best one).
You not know how MUCH I STILL LOVE this movie
Raquel Rivera me to
***** well, I'm so sorry my bad english. but I`m Mexican fyi you rude racist .l.
For me, The Little Mermaid II is amazing.
Let's just pray and hope that Disney doesn't get the idea of remaking this movie into live-action, that is....*IF* they intend to remake the Little Mermaid into live-action. *shivers!!!!*
They already are. Chloe Grace Moretz is playing Ariel.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I liked it even more than the original.
That's not Disney though, that one's supposed to be more like the original fairy tale.
They are making one with the songrwriter from Moana.
I like this movie. I am glad that Ariel and Eric has a daughter. It is great to see her daughter turn into mermaid. Ursula's sister is okay, but Ursula is one of great villains in Disney animation movies, even Ursula's song (Poor Unfortunate Souls) is in the Disney legacy collection CD (The Little Mermaid).
and no one addressed the cavern of treasures! that was BLOWN UP!!!! what's it doing all "normal" and filled with things?????
Now I don't know which one is Worse The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea or The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning?
nikosafer1 yeah that was the worst
nikosafer1 Ariel's Beginning besides the prologue is for me BORING.
Easy. Little Mermaid 1 is worse than both.
Goku VS Usagi Tsukino no not really
Little Mermaid II: Deep Sea Boogaloo
Ursula vs Jafar: The Big Showdown; Lion King V: the Quickening; Pocahontas' Bizarre Adventures; Seven Dwarfs go Hawaiin; Frozen Rising 2: Revengeance; Snow white: the She-Wolf of Magical Kingdom; Great Mouse Detective from Outer Space
I know it's just an animated movie. But how the shit is Sebastian still alive after 12 years??
I really love Jodi Benson's voice, she's the voice of Ariel after all. Ariel is my most favorite character mermaid princess.
I also love her singing she has a very beautiful singing voice.
Thank You Jodi Benson for bringing your character and my favorite mermaid princess character to life. I really love Ariel a lot.
God Bless Her.
Seeing this gave me such nostalgia (no pun intended). I used to watch this all the time. I can still remember the songs.
