  • Hi there railfans.
Todays video shows all the daily passenger trains to/from Anchorage Downtown Depot.
There are two more trains that are not in this video. First and most important reason is that I had to call it a day due to an early start at work the next morning. Second, and almost as important, the missing trains are the same equipment that left earlier in the morning.
First departure of the day is the Coastal Classic train to Seward. This train is one of the two that is not in the video for its return to Anchorage. This journey takes almost 5 hrs with a stop at Girdwood.
Second is the Denali Star towards Fairbanks. This journey will take almost 12 hrs and has stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali.
Third departure is the McKinley Explorer. This train is operated by Holland America Line and Princess Cruises and does not show up in the schedule on the Alaska Railroad website. ARR just supplies the engine to pull the train to where it needs to go, in this case the train goes to Denali and back the next day with a second train going the opposite direction. This train also has a different start and end location, just next door to the Anchorage Depot.
Last departure of the day will be the Glacier Discovery train. This train goes to Grandview and takes about 5.5hrs to get there with stops in Girdwood, Whittier, Portage and Spencer. This is the second trains you won't see return to Anchorage in this video.
First arrival is the McKinley Explorer followed a few hours later by the Denali Star.
The Glacier Discovery will normally return at 9pm and the Coastal Classic at 10:15pm.
Here are the engines in order of appearance:
    4328, EMD SD70MAC
    3014, EMD GP40-2
    4320, 4326 and 4317, EMD SD70MAC
    3011, EMD GP40-2
    4323, 4327 and 4324, EMD SD70MAC
That's all for today. Thanks for watching and have an awesome rest of your day.

It sure is beautiful there. So far this summer I’m not lucky with the weather, rain every time I’m there. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏻

Have you ever wondered how they got the locomotives and freight cars to Alaska? The tracks dont connect to any rail lines in North America. Anyways keep up the great work!

A boat goes a long way I guess. But yeah, never really thought about it. 👍🏻
