I just bought a beautiful almost mint 1990 YJ a few weeks ago with only 102k miles with hard top and doors. Soft tops and soft doors and nice after market parts with every original peice also and sweet rims and tires. I have a few things I want to do to it and so far out of 100s of channels yours is by far the best.
Even though I dont use spark plugs anymore, love how detail oriented you are in keeping things organized and using precision & cleanliness in your work. Great to watch in the background while doing homework! Hope you're doin well Dale!
I haven't put 30,000 miles on my TJ for 5 years . I don't drive it very much . Looking forward to your stroker build , I have been pondering the idea of doing that to my TJ . Good video as always Dale . Take care and be safe .
30,000 miles is recommended for copper spark plugs which I always use because their so easy to get at on the 4.0, brass dist. cap. also & rotor. I'll give you a tip before changing your plugs, NOW'S THE TIME TOO CLEAN OUT YOUR THROTTLE BODY. Use T.B. Cleaner, SeaFoam what ever, spray it in or through a vacuum line, this way you won't screw up your new spark plugs. 1 thing I noticed on these Distributor Caps ( THE TERMINALS INSIDE SOME ARE VERY CROOKED ) ? I use a pair of pliers too straighten them out by turning the terminals where the boot clicks on then epoxy the terminal to the cap so it stays straight, just a little bit of epoxy. The epoxy I use is Devcon plastic steel in the twin tubes. I also tried super glue but it did not seem too hold up. If you really want to clean your T.B. GOOD, TAKE IT OFF THE INTAKE but for a through the engine cleaning do it before changing plugs. Like using SeaFoam or something else ?
@@JeepSolid Was that the whole Accel kit that comes with all that stuff ? How many MM's are the plug wires, 8MM ? I used NGK wires & plugs this time around also with Accel Cap & Rotor right before winter here in PA.
Thanks a ton for your videos!! I Replaced my distributor in my 95 2.5L it was set to TDC. It runs great at idle but it runs rough when under load. Any ideas?
The YJ used a 2.5 L AMC 150 I4 or optional 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 until 1990. Starting in 1991, a fuel-injected 180 hp (134 kW) 4.0 L AMC 242 variant replaced the 112 hp (84 kW) 4.2 L 258 CID straight-6. The NP207 transfer case was used only for 1987 and replaced by the NP231
I've owned my 91 yj for 30 yrs and it has always been reliable. It over heated this past week and I replaced the water pump. Now, it starts (when its cold) and runs well for 5 mins then dies. Then won't start until I leave it alone for a while. What do you think it could be. Being it runs, its getting spark (I replaced the coil). What would be affected by it overheating like this?
Here's the question the internet can not answer and you may be the only source of wisdom: how do you reset the maint interval light? Ugh! Please tell me you know, lol! And thanks for all the sweet vids!
I have a 93 with a 4.0. When I have an empty trailer behind me, I always have to down shift to get over a hill. Which do you and the viewers say would help? A gear change or a turbo kit?
Hey! This jeep does not have ac. No compressor. They do have the same alt mounting bracket. That’s where ac would mount. So there’s 2 different size belts. 1 for ‘with ac’ and 1 without
Sounds like a mild version of death wobble. Are your tie rods, ball joints in good shape? I was getting some mild wobble on my project Fungus at 20mph or so. Then it would smooth out when I picked up speed. Made a video on it you can check out. Replace Tie rods and it was fixed!
@@JeepSolid maybe so, the main reason it caught my ear is because everyone and their mother with a small block has those plastic clip thingies that keep all the wires in the same place moving together. then again there was a time that doctors told people to smoke cigarettes. Anyways me and my 89 yj love to watch your vids, keep it up
@@JeepSolid Dale you are correct as crossing wires are better then running them in parallel, they have less chance of cross firing especially with JUNK, CHEAP OR OLD WIRES. Todays wires are pretty good with a lot of insulation. Changing them at 30,00 miles also is a BIG HELP keeping them pretty fresh on the 4.0. I bought lifetime wires so I'll see how long they last ?

Awesome video! And very informative and organized for even a new Jeep owner to be able to change the plugs and wires and cap and rotor!! Thank u

Love your channel dude. Quick tip: Use feeler gauges for more accurate spark plug gaps. It's impossible to get them right with those cheap gappers.
Getting better at the hat toss there Dale!!
Haha! Yep
Tx. Excellent info, especially on FI non adjustable timing. Good video

I love this channel.
Thx!!
Not all pre 92s are carbed. I have an 87 with a 2.5L and it has throttle body injection. 😊
My 91 2.5 is a throttle body as well.
Thanks a ton for your videos!! I Replaced my distributor in my 95 2.5L it was set to TDC. It runs great at idle but it runs rough when under load. Any ideas?
Even though it runs good at idle, timing could be off a bit making it rough at higher rpm.
91 YJ was the first year of fuel injection. 87 to 90 YJ was carbureted.
I'm betting the 91s will be the next future collectible.
Actually the 2.5L was throttle bottle injected
I have an 88 YJ with the 2.5 four cylinder. It has throttle body fuel injection. So Tom Green if you don’t know don’t contribute.

How often do you recommend replacing the coil?
Hearing your engine crank, it sounded like it maybe has a burnt valve. Have you done a compression check? God bless, stay well.
Is there a recommended brand or type of spark plug for my 94yj 4.0?
What torque wrench do you use?
Always look forward to each video... Why is there always at least 1 person that clicks the thumbs down?
Thank you! Who knows 🤷♂️

How do you like the Accel tune up kit? Going to need to do a tune up in a few months on my 97 TJ and was curious about it, I’ve heard good things
I noticed that you removed the AC compressor. What belt do you use?

Is there a similar kit for the 4cyl?
i got a 4 cyl too, not alot of videos or answers for our comments
helpful, thanks!
How do you know you are tightening to 27 pounds?
Use a torque wrench
Hey brother, My 95 yj 4l feels like a dog shaking its tail when I get to 3rd gear. Have ever had that problem or any guess why it does that?
Just 3rd gear? Not at a particular speed?

Could be a bad u-joint on rear driveshaft or out of balance tire but very hard to diagnose without a test drive.

i've never heard that plug wires shouldn't run parallel with eachother
Yeah, don't remember where I heard that, but I do remember it. Maybe some electrical engineer on here will correct us. Haha!

Yeah, I had the same though on the little plastic clips. but the clips also keep them slightly separated as well.

I think they switched over mid 91 sometime

Yes, true, but this video is geared toward new DIY folks. People who don't understand the lingo yet.
yours is easy the 1987 yj you cant get your hand in to much emmisions crap
you took off ait contitioning compresser to get a spark plug; bad you not to show that we see empty brackets and hose , ''a pox on you, gertrude''
This vehicle did not have air conditioning. Some models like this don’t. You should know what you’re talking about before you make a rude comment.
