I think people thought this was going to be a miniature Triumph - but it isn't! It is a full sized bike with a cc that is comparable to many other bikes. The power is adequate and the styling is very good. I saw it at the unveiling in Denver and it is very nice. I would put this up against any other bike in the segment. Thanks for making this video and giving us all a riding experience! 👍

One of the best looking bikes i have ever seen , not so sure if the electrons are reliable. I've heard many horror stories. I wish Triumph would have actually manufactured this machine.

Triumph have a winner on there hands 400cc with 40bhp, sorry RE you really need to find some more power in the 350's or I guess they will have to use the new 450 Himalayan engine in some of their road bikes, maybe a Hunter 450 would be good competition to the Triumph 400 speed. Hopefully RE are already looking to make it.
For the money, it's very, very good really like it but had my leg over a royal Enfield 650cc meteor at north Cornwall motorcycles ( new £6495 ) so for£900 more could have one of them, but saying that for a triumph got to be good as the speed is £4995.
What a splendiferous review of the 400X just as it's about to break into the market. As you're aware I put in a very early note of interest in this bike in this exact colour. I expressed to the dealer to transfer a deposit I'd had on an Africa twin ( which they sold as I waited to make a final decision ). I got no invitation to view the bikes when they were doing the rounds and have heard nothing since. Needless to say I'll be paying them a visit to give them what's what 😟
excellent little bike.in fact it weighs 100lbs less than the 650 goldstar,so the power to weight ration is better!.i had an old dr400s years ago and im sure i done more miles on that than any other bike ive owned.also cheap as chips to run too.makes sense.
Nice looking little bike, always think headlight protectors are a bit gimmicky. If I was going off road I might consider one but that would be all. I’ve been biking over 40 years and never had a broken headlight or even a damaged headlight. People often say especially with higher end bikes the cost of a new headlight can be really high, I get that, however at one time I had a high end Mercedes and think the headlights that were much lower to the ground so more in the stone damage danger zone cost around £2k to £3k to replace, never crossed my mind to put some kind of protection on them.
It's a great looking bike TAYM, and sounds like a beefy version of my missus' Zontes GK125, especially as it's a revvy motor as well 😉. I fancy a test ride just to try one , but I'll be keeping my Classic 350 and just fit some K60 scout tyres for my mucky lanes riding, aka Coastrider , he's shown how good the bike and those tyre's are . Seriously though they're totally different bikes, the Classic is a true thumper , the Triumph is a bit of a buzz bomb, but it looks well 👌, Triumph have done a good job . Cheers Mel 🍻
Great little machine i do like it...i thought the gold forks would grow on me and they did for a while only a short while tho...old school me gotta be black and chrome😊. Great little Triumph tho. Thanks TAYM.
I reckon the x version be popular easier to pick up on those back country roads if dropped & easy to handle on the gravel, dry dirt roads & down at the river.Lot's of fun.
Hi useful comments though i have yet to come across a review thst gives me s feel for how either of the 400s would perform as a commuter bike where mpg comfort and servicing might be up the list of priorities.
Another on my list that i want to test ride. Its a good looking bike, the looks appeal to me much more than the new Himi, or the Honda CL500. Not even seen one in the flesh yet.
@@TAYM Was in Taunton today, so dropped into Total Triumph to see the 400X. Very impressed with the fit & finish of it and it looked really good. I'll deffo be getting a test ride sometime. I can see this bike selling really well at its price.
Great little bike same power as the old 2 strokes from the past, seems to pick its feet up well, a lot quicker than the RE 411s, would be great to see how it will do against the RE 450 Himi has you said. Ride safe and keep them videos coming 😊
Morning Mr TAYM. Well done on getting an early ride on this wee beastie. Yes, a comparison against the Himi will be interesting. I would think the Himi has more low down, but the 400X is higher revving (just my thoughts). It would definitely make the perfect winter bike……but so might the Himi 450. 🤔.
Thanks Mr TAYM, perhaps the video is deceptive but that seems very quick for a 400cc bike. Definitely has the Triumph look and I can't understand why they didn't call it a Cub, maybe there'll be a retro Cub version later. Very tempting but is it worth nearly £2k more than a Hunter? I'll have to ride both to find out. Cheers, Mick
Hi, any idea when the triumph 400 speed master is being released here in the UK. And will you be reviewing it? The bike looks good from the pics I've seen so far !
Fabulous review, and I wouldn't have considered this but you've convinced me it would be a great option for a winter bike and a lot of fun in poor (or any) conditions throughout the year. 55kg lighter than my big bike! I might wait for a secondhand one - can I be first in the queue when you sell yours please? Although I might not be able to wait that long! I will take a good look at one at Triumph Suffolk or the MCN Excel show - are you going?
I like it. Bit too tall for me and Diddy Dave. I could just get the "Speed 400" instead but these look much nicer. It's a different kind of motorcycling than the Classic 350. You'll be playing with an entirely different rev band. I'll bet it'll be very similar experience to the CB300R I had a few year's ago. For this reason, it'll not work for me as I love short-shifting the J-series plodder. My time with revvy bikes has passed. But for everyone else, isn't it great that there's so much choice for us in the lower capacity market these days ?😊 Edit: You briefly found the "600 mpg" mode. Leave it in that mode, then there'll be no need for those awful EV bikes that they will insist on forcing down our fat necks 👍
I think that we are spoiled for choice in the lower mid size range. The 400X is a good option for taller people. The 19" front wheel should deal with the pot holes nicely. Sounds like a 125 🤣🤣😂😂. The scrambler looks great! Thanks for the review 👍👍.
Hi Taym, interested in this because my first bike after my 2 stroke 250s was a cb360 twin then a cb550 4. I really loved the cb360 In lime green and first bike I took a pillion on was 39 bhp the same as this. Had the honda twin clocks and plenty of chrome which I liked. I remember thinking 40bhp is great with the weight of the bike. Went up to the 550 which was around 55bhp but 4 growl. I’d love. Ride on one of these but really think the clocks are woeful like RE and some Guzzis. All the TFT etc are nowhere near as good looking as say your bonneville and thruxton clocks. From your cockpit point of view they are just gorgeous. Still wouldn’t buy just yet give it some development time. I think these smaller cc bikes are brilliant. RE too slow for me but think the new himmy is very good looking
Like this one TAYM it's a very good looking bike I note they seem to have taken note of the CCM tank putting what looks like dents to allow the forks to turn, but what is that cable running along the swinging arm by the brake pipe ?.The silencer looks really nice in comparison to most these days TAYM but I note you say about the throttle being a bit lurchy I am surprised Triumph haven't sorted that out since it seems to be a bit of a thing with them .On the whole though perty damned good 👌👍
Thanks Crumb 😁 yes, strangely the speed version was perfectly smooth 🤔 I wonder if they have fuelled them differently or if it was just the scrambler I rode🤔
For us shorty's the seat height seems a strange decision bearing in mind Triumph have seen the light and just brought out the lower 1200 X Scrambler model ... It means the only 400 Scrambler model on offer has a much taller seat than both the 900 and 1200 range has available. It sort of pitches the 400 as a "serious" off-road bike but without the usual components such as spoked wheels ? I think the way Honda offer a taller seat option on the CL500 is a much better way to cater for taller people on a bike that will mostly be used on roads. Great review TAYM as always ..I hope to get out again myself once my health is back on track👍
The Roads that you rode it on are exactly what it's made for, and inner city comuits. 40bhp is usable, 20 bhp ! Not so much. Its going to sell very well I think. I'd have one as a second bike. Royal Enfield are going to have to up there game again.
@@TAYM ...it's interesting, Triumph have taken design cues from the BSA Rocket 3 on the tank of the new Trident 660 and, honestly, the silencers and r/h side panel of the Triumph 400 Scrambler remind me of the Triumph Hurricane. I am afraid that I'm old enough to have owned and ridden one of the last Triumph Trident T160 Triple 750's to have come out of the factory. So, I am very familiar with the TRIUMPH and BSA Triples of that era. ( By the way, my Trident T160 was very well run-in and ran as smooth as silk on a long run, the handling was beautifully old school via Girling shock absorbers and Dunlop TT100's ).
Black Jacks were four for a penny in the fifties. That would be 960 for a £1 Anyhow another good video TAYM. 400 Scrambler is a bit too tall for me but it looks great up close ( and no daft spokes Yaaaay). Have you looked at the 900 Speed twin ? I think its even lower that the Speed 400!
is it me or are BlackJacks not the same texture as they used to be? They are quite soft and granular these days! Used to love a bag of fruit salads and black jacks 😁-- oh yeah the bike.... Well I'm a bit of a fan and think it's great to see something else entering the RE stomping ground. I'm looking forward to see if one of our nearest and dearest vloggers gets one!
I'll have to try one of these, they look great. I am conscious that I can get a V7 stone for £6,999 though, that's only £1,400 extra isn't it? Heavier though.
Looks like a great bike and I can see them selling loads (unless Royal Enfield bring out a Scram 450 fairly quickly ). Only thing with it is I've seen a few of the Indian reviews that say they are very thirsty. I suppose we need one of the UK moto bloggers to have one long term and report back.
Possibly the reviewers in India are comparing its consumption with a classic 350? I reckon most motorcycles will seem thirsty in comparison. Agree once some of the Independent reviewers can get some time with one, the real figures will be revealed.
They were comparing it with the new 450 Himalayan. The Triumph was getting 50 to 65 ish mpg and the Himalayan was getting high 60s to nearly 80 mpg. This was with the same rider who had each one for a week and rode the same routes.
Im picking mine up in the olive green shade next week. Have the Enfields 500( in city) and the 650 for touring, so diddn really need another, but just fell in love with that quintessential English design. Had also test ridden the Hardly Davidson 440 thats available here in India and thats a peach of a machine..robust and willing... Anyway il be enjoying my Triumph as the ultimate good looking bike. But hold on...the Norton 500 in its Indian avtar..TVS Norton ..will probably be unveiled in 2025
What is the weight limit on the Triumph Scram 400x ?! I am always confused about the full load weight! Do they count the total weight of the bike + how much on the top or only the load weight without the bike?! Thanx ✌️😎
Dear TAYM, I’m downsizing and like both the ninja 400 and this scrambler x. Both very different bikes but I wonder which would be a better single bike to live with year round in the UK? I think the Ninja has a better all round engine but this scrambler when I tried it was a lot of fun on small and rough roads. Just curious which you would choose between the two? Eventually I hope to have both, maybe one day 😊 Thanks for all your videos I do enjoy them. Happy Friday 😁
Both very good bikes but like you say, very different 😁 I loved the ninja when I tried it and would definitely have one. The Triumph is perhaps not so generic but it’s early days for it and then there are the triumph service costs and parts prices to consider🤔 I am not sure 🤔 if it was my only bike that I had to do everything on I might go the ninja route. But then again I do like the Triumph 🤔 sorry not much help 😂😂😂 thanks KT 😁
It is but feels smaller and of course has styling that is an acquired taste 😁 I did like riding the 390 and without a doubt it is a better bike for off roading 😁 thanks U 😁
@@TAYM found this out. There's power for an indicated 100 mph top speed and enough torque for making safe overtakes-a solid achievement for a small single. Even on a UK motorway the 400 held its own and remained comfortable cruising at the legal limit of 70 mph
Shame Triumph have given up on Uk manufacturing. Still think it could be viable will the right investment. Once you have lost the knowledge it is not really possible to start again. We could really regret not having any manufacturing, in the future.
I quite agree but people say that, if this was manufactured in Britain, it would be twice the price. Fortunately, the design talents from Triumph have not been lost, they’ve gone to Royal Enfield.
It won’t be long before there are some nice aftermarket pipes available for it. I never understood one cylinder, into one pipe, with two silencers?! What’s that for? Ballast?
Handguards & the bar pad with Triumph looks great too.The 400x is gana be popular & fills a gap in the market for small to mid cc Scrambler for country lanes & gravel exploring.70mph is great NZ 🇳🇿 national speed limit is only 62mph(100kmh) ride out on main road to do some back Country exploring.

A really good video, and it does sound good . But I think you’ve just over stepped the line when you try to suggest that a black jack is better than a fruit salad.😊

Great bike! But that speedo/LCD is a like a cockroach on your fish 'n chips. Such a pity since Triumph put so much work into the bike's good looks. It's the one thing you look at most often when riding and Triumph normally has stunning instruments.
For years I’ve been saying that I wish bike manufacturers would make their smaller capacity bikes physically bigger. Well done Triumph!
Thanks PR 😁 yes, even back in the 70/80s as a tall teenager I wanted a bigger bike, always felt too big on the 250 and even the 550s 😁

Thanks MP 😁 it was certainly fun to ride 😁
Definitely the better looking of the two 400 Triumphs. Inevitably going to be compared with the nice Himalayan but they are very different bikes.
Thanks SB 😁 exactly 😁
Looks a cracking bike, I do like the smaller displacement bikes, price is also very un-Triumph like :)
Thanks Shardlake 😁 let’s hope they do the same with the servicing costs 😁
Triumph have a winner on there hands 400cc with 40bhp, sorry RE you really need to find some more power in the 350's or I guess they will have to use the new 450 Himalayan engine in some of their road bikes, maybe a Hunter 450 would be good competition to the Triumph 400 speed. Hopefully RE are already looking to make it.
I think you maybe on the money there🤔 thanks PC 😁
For the money, it's very, very good really like it but had my leg over a royal Enfield 650cc meteor at north Cornwall motorcycles ( new £6495 ) so for£900 more could have one of them, but saying that for a triumph got to be good as the speed is £4995.
Thanks AW 😁 yes, a lot of options on that £5 - £7 k budget 😁 which can only be good for us consumers 😁
Nice review, for a "small" bike it is a winner.
Thanks JP 😁
What a splendiferous review of the 400X just as it's about to break into the market. As you're aware I put in a very early note of interest in this bike in this exact colour. I expressed to the dealer to transfer a deposit I'd had on an Africa twin ( which they sold as I waited to make a final decision ). I got no invitation to view the bikes when they were doing the rounds and have heard nothing since. Needless to say I'll be paying them a visit to give them what's what 😟
Thanks GW 😁 disgraceful behaviour for a dealer 😁
@@TAYM Don't worry, they'll do right by me or they'll never hear the end of it 😀

excellent little bike.in fact it weighs 100lbs less than the 650 goldstar,so the power to weight ration is better!.i had an old dr400s years ago and im sure i done more miles on that than any other bike ive owned.also cheap as chips to run too.makes sense.
Thanks B 😁 yes, a lot of sense 😁
Nice looking little bike, always think headlight protectors are a bit gimmicky. If I was going off road I might consider one but that would be all. I’ve been biking over 40 years and never had a broken headlight or even a damaged headlight. People often say especially with higher end bikes the cost of a new headlight can be really high, I get that, however at one time I had a high end Mercedes and think the headlights that were much lower to the ground so more in the stone damage danger zone cost around £2k to £3k to replace, never crossed my mind to put some kind of protection on them.
True..never had a broken headlamp from flying debris..
Though a fast trajectory chipped stone took out my speedo cable in Ladakh 2016
Thanks SW 😁 very interesting point 🤔
😂😂😂 incredible 😁 thanks SS 😁
You are spot on 😁 thanks Mel 😁
Great little machine i do like it...i thought the gold forks would grow on me and they did for a while only a short while tho...old school me gotta be black and chrome😊. Great little Triumph tho. Thanks TAYM.
I reckon the x version be popular easier to pick up on those back country roads if dropped & easy to handle on the gravel, dry dirt roads & down at the river.Lot's of fun.
Thanks DT 😁
Definitely 😁
Hi useful comments though i have yet to come across a review thst gives me s feel for how either of the 400s would perform as a commuter bike where mpg comfort and servicing might be up the list of priorities.
Thanks AB 😁
Another on my list that i want to test ride. Its a good looking bike, the looks appeal to me much more than the new Himi, or the Honda CL500. Not even seen one in the flesh yet.
Thanks MJ 😁 hopefully you get to see them soon 😁
@@TAYM Was in Taunton today, so dropped into Total Triumph to see the 400X. Very impressed with the fit & finish of it and it looked really good. I'll deffo be getting a test ride sometime. I can see this bike selling really well at its price.

Cracking review, nice bike, but would need a step-ladder to get on it unfortunately 😢. (Black-jacks and bag-pipes 😂). Keep 'em coming, mucho ta. K

Great little bike same power as the old 2 strokes from the past, seems to pick its feet up well, a lot quicker than the RE 411s, would be great to see how it will do against the RE 450 Himi has you said.
Ride safe and keep them videos coming 😊
Thanks SS 😁
Morning Mr TAYM. Well done on getting an early ride on this wee beastie. Yes, a comparison against the Himi will be interesting. I would think the Himi has more low down, but the 400X is higher revving (just my thoughts). It would definitely make the perfect winter bike……but so might the Himi 450. 🤔.
Yes, it’s going to be interesting to compare the two 😁 thanks Ian 😁
Ha! First today.
Been interested in these. Thanks for another great video.
Almost JT 😁
Great Bike Big surprise how great it is
Only time will truly tell 😁thanks SM 😁
Thanks Mr TAYM, perhaps the video is deceptive but that seems very quick for a 400cc bike. Definitely has the Triumph look and I can't understand why they didn't call it a Cub, maybe there'll be a retro Cub version later. Very tempting but is it worth nearly £2k more than a Hunter? I'll have to ride both to find out. Cheers, Mick
I think it is trademark reasons🤔 not sure though 😁 thanks Mick 😁
Hi, any idea when the triumph 400 speed master is being released here in the UK. And will you be reviewing it? The bike looks good from the pics I've seen so far !
That sounds exciting😁 never even knew there was one in the pipeline 😁 I shall have a look for that 😁 thanks Brian 😁
😂😂😂 thanks AS 😁 I hope to go to the Excel but it depends on work load 😁
But for everyone else, isn't it great that there's so much choice for us in the lower capacity market these days ?😊
Edit: You briefly found the "600 mpg" mode. Leave it in that mode, then there'll be no need for those awful EV bikes that they will insist on forcing down our fat necks 👍
600mpg 🤣
😂😂😂 yes, very much like the old school 250/350s 😁 thanks PGB 😁
I think that we are spoiled for choice in the lower mid size range. The 400X is a good option for taller people. The 19" front wheel should deal with the pot holes nicely. Sounds like a 125 🤣🤣😂😂. The scrambler looks great! Thanks for the review 👍👍.
Thanks GBD 😁
Thanks Volt 😁 it does remind me of those 70/80s 250/350 bikes 😁 good fun 😁
Like this one TAYM it's a very good looking bike I note they seem to have taken note of the CCM tank putting what looks like dents to allow the forks to turn, but what is that cable running along the swinging arm by the brake pipe ?.The silencer looks really nice in comparison to most these days TAYM but I note you say about the throttle being a bit lurchy I am surprised Triumph haven't sorted that out since it seems to be a bit of a thing with them .On the whole though perty damned good 👌👍
Right on.
Only gripe is how thirsty that little motor is. 60mpg is the same as my Intercptr 650 which is far more capable as a power plant
Thanks Crumb 😁 yes, strangely the speed version was perfectly smooth 🤔 I wonder if they have fuelled them differently or if it was just the scrambler I rode🤔
I think it’s probably been ragged everywhere as a demo 😁
The seat has suspension settings that can make it sit lower when you're in it
Thanks DJ 😁 hope you are feeling better soon 😁
The Roads that you rode it on are exactly what it's made for, and inner city comuits. 40bhp is usable, 20 bhp ! Not so much. Its going to sell very well I think. I'd have one as a second bike. Royal Enfield are going to have to up there game again.
Thanks RM 😁 absolutely agree 😁
Sounds like true love, Coulter SV650 be leaving the garage to manometer room?????
😂😂😂 thanks ST 😁 would love one 😁
I like the split seat...I'm sure you could find a nice tail tidy for it too..bit tall for the average rider though..
Thanks Bill 😁 yes, even taller than the 900🤔
Something of the original Triumph 'Hurricane' about the r/h side panel and the silencers, in the side profile shot.
Thanks CC 😁 will have to check those out 🤔
@@TAYM ...it's interesting, Triumph have taken design cues from the BSA Rocket 3 on the tank of the new Trident 660 and, honestly, the silencers and r/h side panel of the Triumph 400 Scrambler remind me of the Triumph Hurricane.
Thanks B 😁 I have indeed 😁 it was riding the 900 that made me try the T100 😁 loved it 😁
is it me or are BlackJacks not the same texture as they used to be? They are quite soft and granular these days! Used to love a bag of fruit salads and black jacks 😁-- oh yeah the bike.... Well I'm a bit of a fan and think it's great to see something else entering the RE stomping ground. I'm looking forward to see if one of our nearest and dearest vloggers gets one!
Definitely not as hard as they used to be and they don’t make your tongue anywhere near as black 🤔😂😂😂 thanks Ice 😁
I'll have to try one of these, they look great. I am conscious that I can get a V7 stone for £6,999 though, that's only £1,400 extra isn't it? Heavier though.
Totally agree 😁 I think though that you need both 😁 keep the V7 for summer 😁 thanks SOTR😁

Well, that does make it seem thirsty. I get better mpg from my Interceptor than that.
Thanks AD 😁 interesting 😁
I suspect it’s more to do with the way it has been ridden 😁 it does encourage the you to go on a bit 👹 and will go on to a ton 😁
Morning taym seems a nice bike definitely got to be quicker than a scram or himmy 👍
Thanks Derek 😁 definitely, by about 30mph 😁
@@TAYM faster than the scram
@@SOLOMOTOUK what did you get out of the scram?
Im picking mine up in the olive green shade next week. Have the Enfields 500( in city) and the 650 for touring, so diddn really need another, but just fell in love with that quintessential English design. Had also test ridden the Hardly Davidson 440 thats available here in India and thats a peach of a machine..robust and willing...

What is the weight limit on the Triumph Scram 400x ?! I am always confused about the full load weight! Do they count the total weight of the bike + how much on the top or only the load weight without the bike?! Thanx ✌️😎
I don’t know 🤔 I guess it can only be dependent on the weakest component 🤔 good question 😁 thanks SV😁
Eventually I hope to have both, maybe one day 😊
Thanks for all your videos I do enjoy them.
Nice review how were the vibrations at 70mph?
Thanks D 😁 not too bad and not as bad as a 250 Vstrom I had a few years ago but it definitely gets buzzy at speeds in excess of 75 😁
Is it ok for a beginner?
I don’t see why not 😁 assuming they have passed all the statutory requirements 😁 thanks TR 😁

It is but feels smaller and of course has styling that is an acquired taste 😁 I did like riding the 390 and without a doubt it is a better bike for off roading 😁 thanks U 😁

Let’s hope they keep some manufacturing here 😁
