Worked great with my Linksys E1200v2. Your video perfect. I failed to connect with at least 4 other videos. The key details yet be patient with this thing up and and follow your steps step by step. Thanks again
I can`t understand those negative comments below. I appreciate this thorough explanation very much. It helped me through the process to establish a repeater function with a finger snip of time. And that`s what obviously the intention was. THX
I want to thank you. I watched and read like tonnes of different videos and how to's and I finnally got it to work with your video.I personally appreciate your in depth how too vid.
Nice video, Jacob. I get a lot of questions from DD-WRT users about doing this with Tomato firmware. The main difference is that Tomato doesn't currently offer a "repeater" mode like DD-WRT. But you can still bridge the connection between two (or more) routers with WDS mode and extend your WiFi coverage that way. Whenever possible, I'll use the 5GHz band in WDS mode and use the 2.4GHz band in AP mode for wireless clients. This way, you can take advantage of the 5GHz throughput between the two routers and reduce latency during the hop to the wireless clients on either end. It works out pretty nice and makes for a solid connection.
@ Jacob Foster: Thanks for a excellent tutorial, it was much needed. Especially when one considers that DD-WRT.com is inundated with antiquated write-ups, conflicting recommendations & so much data, till it's quite the task arriving at anything useful, well without blowing a brain-spring anyway ! That & the fact that the Mods & Senior-Users are burnt to where a guy's basically on his own. So yeah your video was met with a sigh of relief, because after reading DD-WRT's 'Rules/Guidelines to Posting' write-up, then 'The Peacock Thread' & all 'Thee Announcements' & the write-up on 'CFE Backups' & on & on & on with the "Required Reading". Till I was NOT anticipating searching through that mess for another 36 hours, all in hopes of finding something half as precise as your video. However, one point did arise. After I renamed & changed the IP of my repeater, then waiting a full 4 mins, I noticed I was unable to log in at the new or old IP & I had been connected via Cat-5 from jump. So I opened a Win-7 'Elevated Command Prompt' & typed ipconfig /flushdns & I was good to go. Thanks for the upload/share(you made it clear & easy). PS: Now I'm not hating I'm just stating, it's too bad some Super-Mod over at DD-WRT or its WIKI wouldn't consider stickin this video up their sticky section. X
Thanks for the video brother. I was following some other webpage but it needed some other component and not stand alone, followed your video and now I get full bars anywhere I go. Thanks Again!
Thanks! This still works. Only problem I had was after ending set up I couldn't get internet thru the repeater. Just changed the encryption type (WPA Algorythms under the wireless security tab) on the repeater to AES to match the original access point and voila! It was fixed.
Wow your the Greatest!!! I must of watched over 20 videos on this subject to no avail? And read countless forums. But you explained it so well I finally got it and it WORKS! Thanks again:)
Thanks for this video. This worked for me. My dd-wrt is the micro and its on a WRT-54G ver 6. I didn't have the Site Survey screen or the screen that lets me see mac and connection quality as you show it near the end of your video. I'm glad I kept this old router however the wireless is slow compared to my ASUS RT-N66U. Now that's it configured I should only have to make small changes based on what I am trying to repeat. Thanks
You are very welcome buddy! I feel like I blabbed alot but I just wanted to cover the things I had to figure out on my own because I was never able to find a tutorial that was in depth enough haha! But thanks glad I could help!
Make sure you go into the admin tab and restore defaults before doing this! I spent hours trying to get it to work and it wouldn't until I reset to factory settings! best /easy way to do this is to do Status>Wireless > Site Survey > Then click join on the side of the wireless connection you want to connect to... wait for the screen to say continue then it will bring you to a new screen... change it from client to repeater.. and add your virtual network!
@ Jeremy Green Since "Mixed Data" from both bin files are stored in NVRAM during the flash procedure, It's required that we always do a '30-30-30 Hard Reset' before & after every Flash. Omitting this step leaves mixed data from both the new & original bin files stored within the routers NVRAM & is the reason for many a N00Bs problems. Bottom-Line: 'Always do a 30-30-30 Hard Reset before & after all Flash procedures'.
All these fucksticks giving you crap, but I bet most of them set-up their router to your video. I thought it was very well done, and I'd like to thank you for taking the time to put this up as it was very helpful.
Just open networks and sharing center. Open change adapter settings. right click local area connection. Click on properties double click (TCP/IPV4). Click on use the following ip addresse. Make the ip addresse the same as you router subnet mask should set it's self when you click on it. Use tftp.exe to upgrade dd-wrt. Watch the video and do what he says. I hope this helps alot of people😁
Great video, very informative. I don't recall if it was mentioned in the video but making sure the ap router and repeater are broadcasting same signal.....my ap router was sending b/g/n and my repeater is b/g only. After several days and a huge hammer later I switched my ap to b/g only and VIOLA....my daughter can play xbox in her room :) (don't have any n devices at the moment anyway....cross that bridge when we get there). Huge thanks again.
This is great. I have a old router and it is capable. Now I can plug my repeater router anywhere away from the host router? Like I have my host on a second floor, so I can plug the repeater on the main floor. Because my basement struggles for signal.
great stuff bud, finally i can use old wifi to get stronger/repeated signal from my home to my garage. But 13:30 whats the difference between wireless mode Repeater / Repeater Bridged and those 2 selections of Unbridged or Bridged beneath SSID and AP? Finally someone explains all this properly, but my booboo was not using EXACT password authentication as WPA2 personal TKIP+AES, I'm using as Repeater Bridge successfully finally. My WAN IP shows Disabled, but none the less, seems its all working fine now. So will it only work with ethernet cable, or will it actually work with stronger/repeated wifi signal now?
difference between repeater . .and repeater-bridge is that with repeater, you will continue to use the (repeater router) 's ip address/ gateway.. . with the repeater-bridge mode, it will turn off hte "repeater routers" dhcp server, and you will be bridged to the target router .. and recive its Ip address, and be bridged to that network.
He is right about the repeater and bridge being the same thing because I'm just useing repeater with the Ethernet plugged into my pc.and it's easier to update too dd-wrt if you use tftp.exe to install it.
Outstanding video. Thanks a ton for it. Everything seems to be working perfectly as long as Main Router and Repeater are physically connected. As soon as i disconnect them from each other I cannot access the repeater nor connect any devices to it. Can't find the answer on the web. What am i doing wrong please? I have removed all security. The phone i am using to connect with, will connect when they are connected. But will not when the repeater and router are not connected. Thanks again.
Best detailed explanation.what if I use external biquad antenna with one of the router's antenna to grab my neighbors open wifi and can the other antenna redistribute the signal to my devices ?thank you for your explanation
Loved this How To. I have a question i would like to use an old Samsung S4 as a hot spot and a Linksys WRT 3200 ACM as wireless for the whole house, would you use access point instead of repeater? can anyone help?
Thanks for the video man!! My only problem is, on my D-Link 615 when I complete the process it won't let me search for wifi. Site survey says that i need to enable wireless network. WHat am I doing wrong?
Thanks so much! I was able to configure the router as a repeater. Next step is to set it up as a repeater bridge so I can use the ethernet ports as direct connections (printer). For some reason, the WAN showed as "disabled" (instead of an IP address or 0.0.0.0) when I set it as a repeater bridge instead of just repeater. Was anyone successful in setting up a repeater bridge using this tutorial? If so, what physical interface settings did you use? Tip for those using this tutorial to connect a router to a jetpack: I had to change the wireless network mode to "G-Only." Mixed network mode would not work. Thanks again!
I used your tutorial and changed my Linksys WRT310N router to a repeater. The issue I am having is that if I put wireless security on the repeater it will not work. My network is on WPA2-PSK I used WPA2 personal for the repeater. Any ideas on how I can make this repeater work with security? By the way your tutorial is very good. Thanks
You can't, as you have to have the credentials for the original router, the second shouldn't let you connect anyways. Use no security on repeater (that's what I understand)
....sorry a little bit of additional information. if I run my mouse over the repeater icon when looking at wireless networks it shows the security as WEP.
Hey, great video, really helpful. But whenever my router reboots it stops giving off a wireless signal, and I can't get into the configuration page through the ethernet cable either. I have to do the 30/30/30 hard reset to make it work and when I do it resets all my settings. Suggestions please?
On setup up tab, basic setup section, don't we need to provide the IP for Access Point (AP) router as a gateway and also don't we need to make sure the subnet mask matches with the AP router's subnet ? Plus do we need to disable the DHCP server on DD-WRT enabled router? Is there any way to if a device or client is connect to Internet using the original connection (through AP router) or through repeater ? Sorry for too many questions :) just wanted to clarify myself.
Awesome video! But Im using an e4200v1 that shoots a dual band. So when I go to set up the repeater I have 2 physical wifis to configure?? Solution?? should i just set up one? One is 2.4, the other(on bottom) is 2.4/5ghz
I so appreciate your step by step instructions. I was half way through my setup and ready to add the virtual Interface and then got a message this webpage is not available and the dd-wrt doesn't show on my network and sharing center. I named it the same as LinksysE2000 the same name as my main linksys router, which maybe where I went wrong. Now I can't get back into the 198.168.69.1 to make changes. I know you're not a help desk but any tips would be greatly appreciated.
on the antennas, when you choose left or right does that mean only the single antenna will be working? If so is left or right determined by looking at the router from the front?
Hey dude! Great video!! I read through the comments and didn't see anyone having this issue. Followed all the steps in the video, and as long as my laptop is hardwired to my repeater, I have full internet access. When I remove the ethernet cable, and try to connect via wifi, the laptop connects, but I get the "no internet" yellow yield sign. I have the full bars icon, but it just won't pass internet. My tablet also hangs on the "connecting" phase. I've disabled security on the repeater just to try and connect. Any ideas?
Unregard Sir! My primary router is the Comcast modem/router. The default security setting is WPAWPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES), which is not an option in the dd-wrt drop downs. I set both the primary and repeater to WPA2-PSK (AES), had to "forget" the connections on my tablet and laptop, reconnect to the primary and the repeater, and all is well. XBox 360 acts as it always did, Netflix, Xbox live, and streaming media files from my laptop. My Android tablet even connects to my laptop, via ES File Explorer, through the repeater, to the primary router, to the laptop. Pretty slick set up Bro! Thanks again the the great video!!
Accessing DD-WRT remotely. I am trying to access the DD-WRT and some devices attached to it's ports remotely. Originally my main router was a Linksys WRT546 and I found by setting up port forwarding on the WRT54G to point all incoming messages to 192.168.1.23 (ie. 8080 to 23, 8090 to 23)and then setting up port forwarding on the DD-WRT to point to the specific ip address of the connected device (ie 8080 to 250 and 8090 to 245) I got the desired result. Then I shifted to a Cisco RV082 Dual Wan router and everything fell apart. I have set up port forwarding and access rules on the RV082 without any luck. Any thoughts? I have set the DD-WRT as a reapter, maybe I need to switch it to a repeater bridge? Thanks
Ok so it is repeating my router signal but I want to give it its own ssid which it looks like you can with the virtual interface. But is it broadcasting the gateway ssid and the virtual ssid simultaneously?
wow thanks for the video, im facepalming so hard because i just set up my first repeater on ddwrt and i made the mistake of not matching the wireless security in the security section, i was making the mistake of setting my own password on the virtual interface.
Hallo I have question please I sheared a signal from my phon and the router connected to the phon but I did not find the wirles from the phon and no internet in the router Thank you
I'm using a DIR-825. And there is no option for "Repeater" or "Repeater Bridge." Where yours says that, mine says "WDS Station" and "WDS AP." Suggestions?
I wasn't sure of the original ssid of the router so I put in what I thought was the original, then when I applied settings, the router doesn't show up anymore for wifi access.
Check that.... I get the new IP address with an ethernet cable between the computer and the router, but not wirelessly from the host router. Maybe I misunderstood your sequence of events.
Well now I am truly flummoxed. I connected to the internet again to review your video and I had an idea about where I may have deviated from your instruction. But now even with ethernet connected directly to the Linksys I cannot reconnect to the intended repeater with the new IP address at all.
I have done this set up so many times. And I finaly got an IP address when im olugged in to the router thru Ethernet. But once I unplug the cord my computer will not connect to it Wireless. Keeps saying can not connect to network and than when I check with my phones wifi it doesn't even show up?? Any Solutions?
Hey, do you need both routers to be the same model/company? I have a linksys wrt110 which is giving out the signal and i have a wrt54g V8 that i want to receive the signal. I have set up the "client" or the ddwrt router to have the same information as the wrt110. If you can help me, I would really appreciate it! message me if you can help (:
Hello Jacob, i recently used an openwrt configuration with client mode, as a repeater. My girlfriend have a linksys wrt 54 gl. I want setup it. Can i using dhcp server? My main router is an huawey 5377 mobile wifi router. This router can manage max 5 dhcp clients. Thanks, Zoltan
Hi I messed with it yesterday, whenever I change the routers ip address OR when I switch from AP to repeater thats when I notice the IP address goes to 0.0.0.0 in the upper right corner, right now im just running it as a secondary booster so I can get wifi on the other side of house Thanx
SMOOTH J Anytime you apply settings you will see the IP in the corner revert to 0.0.0.0 this is normal, just give it a moment and you will notice your IP will come back but only if your router has an internet connection be it as a repeater or AP etc..
Jacob Foster ok i hear ya but it doesnt come back at all..sorry to be a pain but u know how us noobs are lol....when i apply settings it just disappears n never comes back...I have to go back n change everything back to have an ip address...its a wrt150n if that makes a difference
I still don't know what file download, I got a Linksys E1200 V.2, so I want to flash it so I can use it as a repeater, but don't understand which file I've to download, please somebody help, I appreciate.
I watched 3 other videos and nothing worked till i found your site, THX much...

All these fucksticks giving you crap, but I bet most of them set-up their router to your video. I thought it was very well done, and I'd like to thank you for taking the time to put this up as it was very helpful.

Don't forget to set the security mode to WPA or WPA2 on the repeater side, you can't let it decide. Has to match the router!
Thank you Jacob just followed your steps and rest remains history.. :) One more Thank you
Perfect! just what I was looking for! Thanks a bunch!
It's good to me, some tutoring go too fast, I can't catch up, Thanks for upload
difference between repeater . .and repeater-bridge

very nice video it helped me out with my old wrt54g v6

I have removed all security. The phone i am using to connect with, will connect when they are connected. But will not when the repeater and router are not connected.

Thank you this work but took me a few tries now to unplug and take it downstairs to see if it still works lol

Dont you have to change Disable the WAN on the basic setup page? I read that somewhere and i did it and mine seems to be working
thanks dude, you are awesome
this is great! thanks!
I got my linksys router at a goodwill to!
awesome!
Just curious if we can setup 3+ wireless repeaters one for each floor in a motel environment?
Does the repeater bridge just extend to the ports or does it also do wireless as well?

Hi can you explain what the advantage of overclocking to 240mhz was?
I would also like some clarification on that if you don't mind.
Guys, skip to the 6 min mark to finally start the video. Wow
Thanks
Try the bridge, sounds like you have it correct
Ok so it is repeating my router signal but I want to give it its own ssid which it looks like you can with the virtual interface. But is it broadcasting the gateway ssid and the virtual ssid simultaneously?
great instructional, thanks! ~kat
no problem glad it helped!
Can I setup LInksys WRT54G in Repeater Mode but with Login and pass different from the main router? Please help me!
I followed your instructions....it has boosted the wifi signal of the main router. But the is no internet. Could you tell me what the problem is?
I followed the instructions. It works, but even with 100% signal strength It is SUPER slow. Any clue?
5:30 before you even open the browser. I hope this gets more informative...
wow thanks for the video, im facepalming so hard because i just set up my first repeater on ddwrt and i made the mistake of not matching the wireless security in the security section, i was making the mistake of setting my own password on the virtual interface.
Thank U mate :)
I followed your tutorial but I cant log onto the virtual interface. However all the wired connections on the 2nd router are receiving internet.
Hi! Do I need to keep the repeater pugged in with Eth in order to be able to ping it?
so if a repeater bridge only repeats the signal through the lan ports..then what's a client bridge for?
Hallo
I have question please
I sheared a signal from my phon and the router connected to the phon but I did not find the wirles from the phon and no internet in the router
Thank you
I'm using a DIR-825. And there is no option for "Repeater" or "Repeater Bridge." Where yours says that, mine says "WDS Station" and "WDS AP." Suggestions?
My router tl-wr471nd has no Repeater and Repeater Bridge. What should I do?
Any Solutions?
hi I wanna ask how to active 5ghz .I was trying to find it but I couldn't
My DD-WRT setup doesnt seem to include WIRELESS as an option, what should i do?
I'm able to get it set up, but I can't get internet connection via the LAN ports
If you don't need both ( which I don't know why you would ) Then I would just configure one of them and call it good!
Thanks, Zoltan
hi followed directions AND when i get to wireless security and apply settings i dont get a WAN IP address like u do.....ANY IDEAS ON WHY..??...THANX
are you setting up security correctly? make sure you have it set to AES or whatever the original ap is set to
Hi I messed with it yesterday, whenever I change the routers ip address OR when I switch from AP to repeater thats when I notice the IP address goes to 0.0.0.0 in the upper right corner, right now im just running it as a secondary booster so I can get wifi on the other side of house
Thanx
SMOOTH J Anytime you apply settings you will see the IP in the corner revert to 0.0.0.0 this is normal, just give it a moment and you will notice your IP will come back but only if your router has an internet connection be it as a repeater or AP etc..

ok i hear ya but it doesnt come back at all..sorry to be a pain but u know how us noobs are lol....when i apply settings it just disappears n never comes back...I have to go back n change everything back to have an ip address...its a wrt150n if that makes a difference

I still don't know what file download, I got a Linksys E1200 V.2, so I want to flash it so I can use it as a repeater, but don't understand which file I've to download, please somebody help, I appreciate.
doesn't using repeater mode cut your internet speed in half? - I prefer wireless bridge.
I've done it and it works but I have no internet connection. Like I cannot load a page. Help please.
I had no luck changing the router IP address, after I apply the changes and wait like 3 minutes I try going to
