My own mom was like this mom. When I was growing up my mom expected so much from me up until my 30s. She wanted me to have the perfect husband, the nicest house that we could afford ,my dreams for a career, etc. All the way back to my hair color in high school even. Some things she would say hurt me bad and I swore I'd never treat my daughter the same way! Well years later it came true. Except I am not the same way as my mom. I do understand why my mom was that way, but I take a different approach with my own kids. I still have my rules but I'd like them to find themselves more. 😁

I just don't understand why parents mistreat their children. I find it so bizarre. It's so inhumane.

When you have a mother like this, literally, anything you do, anything you say or achieve in life is not enough ... You can have the biggest bank account, the nicest homes the greatest man you've ever met in your life, but somehow, someway, your mother will find fault in your life and in you. She doesn't even have to say it, just one look.... Just One Look !!

My grandmother was like her mom, so my mother had a lot of resentment. If I showed her this film, maybe she will see things more clearly.

"I saw what I had been fighting for: It was for me, a scared child, who had run away a long time ago to what I had imagined was a safer place. And hiding, behind my invisible barriers, I knew what lay on the other side: Her side attacks. Her secret weapons. Her uncanny ability to find my weakest spots. But in the brief instant that I had peered over the barriers I could finally see what was really there: an old woman, a wok for her armor, a knitting needle for her sword, getting a little crabby as she waited patiently for her daughter to invite her in."

It is a different communication. So Weberly is saying nothing is enough for you, nothing i do. In Lindos mind it means my daughter thinks i am such a good mother nothing is good enough for me, she thinks i am so superior nothing can come close. Because in Lindos mind nothing is good enough for her daughter because she is such a perfect daughter. Nothing could be so perfect for her

Right, as an Asian Mom, I hear the conversations differently. We want to have that number one spot in the child's life, and we are proud of how the children turned out like Waverly.

One of the best films. It's absolutely beautiful to have a cinematic glimpse into Asian culture and families in this film but it really is super relatable to family dynamics in general...

I think the point in this scene is lost without the scene before it. Lindo was speaking about how she hung on to her mother's every word as a child because she so valued her input in the scene before. She is crying because she doesn't feel like Waverly values her opinions the same. And when she hears how much her opinions matter to Waverly, how much she wants to please her, it makes her feel good.

Her mother did like his boyfriend, because he was nothing like the first guy that her mother had an arranged marriage with. Her daughter is having a better life than she had back in China. She is happy for her, so happy she has to contain it, because thats how parent's can be sometimes
