I really appreciate this explanation of the movie. I watched it many many years ago but didn't understand it at all. Probably because I'm not a woman, not Chinese so I had trouble making sense of it. That and there were a lot of shocking scenes that overwhelmed me when I saw it. So much trauma. Mental health issues are very hard to understand if you've someone who never had that experience. As a child I had no emotional or mental issues what so ever and so It's no surprise I couldn't relate to what these women were going through, but as an adult I've had my fair share and I think it's only now that I can truly understand some of what people like this are going through.

I cried so much throughout the film. Nowadays there are criticisms of the storytellling, but I think there is so much to take away from this story, criticisms aside. The complex mother and daughter relationships are also very relatable. Now that I’m older, I tend to empathize with the mothers and their hardships. They sacrificed so much to provide an “easier” life for their daughters. Meanwhile the daughters have their modern day struggles, much of which is their relationship with their mothers.

well said! I'd be curious to know what the criticisms of the film are. thank u for watching!

The most important relationship, however, is with the Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross to reconcile us back to the Father. Repent & make Him the undisputed Lord of your life. Live according to His Word, and inculcate a 1 on 1 relationship with Him.

Thank you for this presentation. Well done.
I saw this movie in the 90s and it ended about 3 am. I called my grandma and she answered on the first ring.
My daughter was legally kidnapped and when she was redeemed a random woman assigned to care for her had her watch white oleander as a mother/daughter reference. I dont speak to my daughter. I was never in prison. Ive found my daughter is just like the others who only want to run me thru. Ive still probs got 40 or more years on earth and my soul cant take any more.

Just watched it on a plane this last weekend. Man, that was super sad 😢 I'm not even a lady. I don't think I'll ever have the strength to ask my mom to really tell me everything she's been through

Awesome breakdown. At the end we need to realize we all have our own journey. Our souls choose what family to be born into, and what karma we want to rid of. Love and light!

I wish my mother and Sister would’ve watched this movie back in the 90’s. Maybe things would’ve went differently, your right daughter’s of immigrants and life of immigrants are hard.

speedrunning the book for my english final so thank you!
not sure if it’s different in the movie but doesn’t rose end up divorcing her husband and going to therapy?
also, i thought the swan feather was in the little excerpt of text at the beginning of each set of stories, and that suyuan gave her daughter a jade necklace instead? am i remembering correctly?
