IS'T PART OF THE STORY OF THIS FIGHT THAT CHARLEY GREEN CAME OUT OF THE CROWD BECAUSE THE SUPPOSED OPPONENT DIDN'T SHOW UP
Good memory but you have the fights confused. This happened the previous year, when Charley fought Jose Torres at MSG. Jose was a big favorite, coming back but last-minute Green dropped him cold in the first and dropped him again, almost KOing him! Then Jose KOed him to suddenly end it in the second round. There was some mention afterwards that Charley might have gotten the signal from ringstide that it was "not his night" (see Marlon Brando), but I wouldn't swear to it. Jose has a different account of it, just as weird. When the opponent didn't show, Jose offered Green, a buddy and sparring partner, an unexpected $3500 payday to get in the ring with him, promising not to hurt him. But Green couldn't resist taking a shot at winning, and Jose reluctantly "went back" on his promise. As for Floyd in this bout, this was also a comeback (2 years after a bad decision loss to Jimmy Eliis) and though he was rusty at first, he was thrilled to hear how much the crowd still loved him. Poor, insecure Floyd!
