Thank you for this! I had my new 2-bay NAS set up on my desk temporarily while I copied files over to it, and I was planning on permanently moving it to a more discrete location later. Now I know how to safely shut it down before moving it.
I am currently running Firmware v04.05.00-342. This version has the "SHUT DOWN" button built into the web UI. All good there. Either way, thank you for this video!
I have restored/fixed many red/yellow flashing drives like this exact drive. Shutting down without powering down can and will corrupt the drive. It appears WD knew this, and still hid the button. Finally after years of disgruntled users they put it back in. You would think they would be wanting people to like their products, want to buy again and refer their friends, Instead they get frustrated customers who give up and move on to other products. Such a waste, because when it is working it's truly a superior product to all others. (when it's working)
Thank you for your comment :) It seems like there is not that much logical reasoning going on there or they simply neglect a product once it's out to focus on the next one. Unfortunately mine has broken down by now, it has the exact red flashing light that you mentioned. I managed to rescue the data but still find it unfortunate, this could have been avoided by just some simple quality control in both code and hardware. I imagine it would not be too difficult to install a button that sends a few lines of code to shut it down properly and it would not add any significant production costs. I was quite surprised that there is actually a WD Red drive installed, from what I read they seem to be very reliably so I assume it just the Data Management Software that broke down. From your experience, what exactly is the thing that breaks when the WD my Clouds stop working? How did you repair them? Anyway, I am looking forward to buying new NAS later this year :)
I have 2 of these drives. I bought the second one after a friend spilled a drink that dripped onto the first one. It had a red light on after that. Do you think it can be saved?
Just updated my 8tb ex2Ultra to OS 5, and there's STILL no "power button", technically. There's "hibernate", allowing network shares to access when needed, I guess. But, in some cases I want it OFF, like going out of town for a week, during storm season, etc. I literally hate the absence of a physical power button. Although, I'm guessing if it gets pushed during a write process, it can damage the hard drives, but it seems a little lackish not to be able to shut down in a straight forward manner.
Thanks for the update, that is just ridiculous on WDs side because people have been complaining about this missing feature for years (I found out by digging through forums while looking for a solution). But I guess as a small company that is not so much involved in the IT business we need to cut them some slack. Oh wait, they made 16 billion $ last year and couldn't fix this? I feel your pain... My new NAS has a power button and the way it works is that if you push it, it will start a shutdown sequence and close all processes in a safe way. It takes a while to turn off, like a normal PC shutdown. But after that it is completely off and I can unplug the power cord or switch off the outlet.
YUP! All that said, my MAIN issue is the inability to shut it down when there's storms and I'm having internet/network issues. Mostly network issues, and cannot get into the GUI of my router OR my NAS. I have literally NO recourse in those at least thrice yearly circumstances. Sadly, I've made chop suey out of 5 hard drives over the last 4 years. Frequent power outages during hurricanes, and not being able to shut the NAS down before the storms. Even carefully unplugging the ethernet cable when nothing was reading/writing, so there was no activity when pulling the power. I have had the ex2Ultra since 2018/2019, and no issues with the NAS itself, means it's a fairly decent machine, but the frequent failed HDDs suggest the NASes shortcomings.
That's so true... There is no power on or off button... And there is no option to even schedule the drive to switch on and off automatically.... Where I live we have 2 electricity supply on grid and off grid and everyday the morning and night power shuts down for 10 min to switch to the available power supply... And if the device switch off and on happens everyday the drive will die faster...
Wow that is actually a real problem, especially when it is two times per day. It will probably spend more time booting and repairing lost data than actually working :D
Hi. Thank you for your very helpful video. My question if you could answer it please is how do I prepare the NAS to receive a new HDD after one of two drives has failed? I put the EX2 drive into hibernation (I guess this means shutdown as well?) in readiness for the arrival of the new HDD (10TB) but after unplugging the NAS from the mains and ethernet cables, installing the new drive into bay 2 and plugging it in, after a few moments the red light on drive 2 was on! The NAS wasn't visible on the network either. I removed the new drive and all is well. Faulty drive I'm presuming? Thanks in anticipation of your help.
Thank you for this very informative video. Unfortunately, with the update to firmware 5.11.1112, the code has changed and there doesn't appear to be a hidden hibernation or shutdown option that can be forced into displaying itself (those words are nowhere to be found). I'll try to capture what I see for the reboot menu option: Reboot The only other option, above this, is the code for the logout command. Could the coders at WD have seen your video and effectively said "Hold my beer?" :-/ Thanks, again.
wow thanks so much for this, i wonder if there could be a chrome extension or something to automatically make the hibernate button visible whenever you load the page
The elephant in the room of course is WHY? Nothing to do with WD wanting access (all of the time) to their customer's data I don't suppose. This is not a mistake, it's cynical design. I had exactly the same problem with a so-called 'smart' TV I bought a few years ago: no 'off' switch. As with the NAS I translate 'smart' and the lack of hardware off switches as attempts in all cases to harvest data by all means possible (access to hard drives, microphones, cameras in all devices whether mobile, desktop or home entertainment. There is literally no other reason - nothing to do with energy conservation and convenience (in fact the reverse). In all cases I DEMAND the ability to turn off all devices - in the case of the TV I fitted a conveniently located switched mains socket. The irony is that in many ways I don't mind data collection; I just wish that industry would be more honest about it and not try to hide the fact that this is what they want to do all the time. Finally, 'hibernate' does not give me any confidence at all that the devices actually turns off stone-cold dead - I will do it but then will pull the power and LAN cables. If they mean 'shutdown' then it should say that in clear words: 'TURN OFF'!! Thanks for your video by the way - these are not complaints directed at you they are complaints aimed at designers/manufacturers!
Thank you for your comment, cynical design is a fitting word here. Either it's cynical or they have lost their touch with reality. They do have a professional market and it's okay if a big server doesn't have a switch anymore because it has to run 24/7 anyway and is managed by an IT guy, but this is an entry level consumer product, of course it should have a switch. It's not a lamp I'm pulling out of the socket, it's a fragile spinning disk with my data on it. I think you are absolutely right with demanding a real switch on all devices and in my opinion it should be integrated into legislation that even if the "real switch" is digital, in order to power things down correctly, every connection and data transfer should be stopped. I don't need my nightstand lamp (Philips Hue) to do an update in the middle of the night, just because it's always connected. I'm pretty sure right now a lot of products that are getting washed into the market are creating a digital web that no consumer can really track and sooner or later that's going to backfire. Headlines like "criminals hacked the dishwasher to access the door and just walked in" sound like a joke now but could become reality. Anyway, I switched to a true local NAS now (no internet access) and it runs stable AND it's got a power button :)
You can also use a simple App called SSH Button on your phone and then shutdown the NAS through these commands: For a first gen v4.x firmware single bay My Cloud the following command run via SSH will “shutdown” the My Cloud: /sbin/shutdown -h -P now On the v2.x firmware second gen single bay My Cloud models the following command run via SSH will “shutdown” the My Cloud (This also works on WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra): /usr/local/modules/script/shutdown.sh -h now (On firmware v2.x after the above shutdown command the NAS will still have power as will be seen with the glowing Ethernet connection lights so you will have to switch off the power switch of the plug).
Hi I have a 10TB WD my cloud os3 hard drive . With the support of remote access ending I can’t get a proper instruction from their help support on how to change it to a Lan device. As once change the device defeat the purpose for having a cloud drive. Any advice ? Please
@No Expert, if you're still around as it has been a while, how do we save the web browser changes? still very frustrating to have to inspect & alter the browser code every time you want to shutdown thanks for the original Vid, great information
Hey Shane, sure I check into the comments once in a while to stay in touch :) Unfortunately, I wasn't able to come up with a good and permanent solution for that and before I got to the point of frustration, my Mycloud broke down...Anyway I think I would try to solve it with a script or macro, because in the browser we can only see and read the output of the NAS but not directly access the core code. The easiest way would probably be recording the process of the web browser changes and then playing them back at a higher speed. You could try something like this: Microsoft: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/troubleshoot/winautomation/product-documentation/process-designer/macro-recorder Apple: support.apple.com/guide/automator/welcome/mac There are a lot of different tools out there that let you record mouse and keyboard inputs, they are generally called "macro recorders". I've done something similar before and it worked very well, as long as the task is simple and the location of the windows and elements it interacts with are always exactly the same (they should be in this case). With a little bit of trial and error you'll be able to create a .exe on your desktop that you just need to double-click and then watch how your pc makes the changes just as you recorded them but faster, within a few seconds. Depending on the tool you use, you can then tweak the commands to reduce the time it takes for the whole process to finish and the cool thing is that it's sort of like coding, but without having to learn a programming language because it is all visual. I hope that helps, let me know if it works or if you found a different solution that could help others as well :)
Noise was an issue for me also. Why not just install a SSD? I use WD red SSD's in my 2 bay MyCloud NAS and they work fine. Very quiet and very fast with very low power consumption. WD says the WD Red SSD's are not a supported drive, but they have been working fine for over 2+ years. Only issue I ever get is that the interface shows a periodic "under temperature" fault on the NAS, even in a climate controlled room at normal room temperature. As with any hard drive or SSD, they will eventually need to be replaced.
Aren't these devices supposed to go to sleep automatically and spin the disk down after a period of inactivity? While sleeping the blue light pulses and power consumption drops to less that a watt. Ok, there's still no excuse for not having a proper power down option for those rare occasions when you need it but for day to day use you're supposed to just leave it on and it will go into low power mode whenever it can and wake up when necessary.
Yes, you are right and this device did sometimes go into sleep mode - but never for a long period of time. Maybe for one or two hours at max. It constantly woke up and spun up the disk and then kept running again to do some random housekeeping tasks or whatever it was doing. I did not access it, didn't have any devices or apps connected to it, no active Backup Software and it slept, turned on, slept, turned on all night which in turn constantly woke me up (my bed was like 3 meters away from it in the same room). If it would have been quiet with just a pulsing light I wouldn't have made this video, but the constant, yet unpredictable noise during the night bothered me so I had to find a solution :D

Yes I feel the same, it just does not make sense. I wanted to get a NAS and hesitated to get one from Synology or QNAP because it seemed too expensive just for storing videos and photos. Don't have an almost full disk? I had a similar problem, the diagnostics were OK, but the red LED was still on. I only had 27 MB free out of 3 TB! After deleting part of the data, the LED lights up blue and everything seems to be OK.
deutsche Beharrlichkeit mit "Zug zum Tor", das gefällt mir :) ..nice video, however, as for me your charming solution doesn't work at all. When I push the upper right button I'm getting just the option between "hello admin", "neu starten" (reboot) and "abmelden" (log out browser interface). This ridiculous issue strikes me since years, as for me I solved it with a SSH client, which is of course annoying but it is as it is. "Quick" tutorial? Dude, the video is over 10 minutes 😱 So what we have here is a failure to communicate (the rest of this rant is directed at WD, not you). "Hibernate" does not mean the same as shut down. In the later version of the software (I have 5.21 issued March 2022) the Hibernate button is back - didn't stop me from spending hours looking for the shutdown button though did it. How was I supposed to know this was the only option? Find the 127-page manual from 5 years ago and read the whole thing? I have a feeling they don't tell you that in the manual anyway. Secondly, once you have "hibernated" the thing, there is no easy way to start it up again except *PULL THE POWER PLUG AND REINSERT IT AGAIN* 🤬🤬🤬 Sometimes I wonder about the nerds that work in places like WD. Don't these people have *_any_* connection to the real world?
It could have been shorter, that's true. I personally had the problem that at first I either did not understand short code-only solutions or was afraid to break something, thats why I chose a slower pace for this video. Anyway, thank you for the feedback, I put timestamps in the description now, hope that helps :)
I can't believe this... how incompetent can they be ?
Thanks for the video !
Thankyou, this problem has been bugging me for years, but I just left it running and the power has failed more often than I have unplugged it!
Thank you for this! I had my new 2-bay NAS set up on my desk temporarily while I copied files over to it, and I was planning on permanently moving it to a more discrete location later. Now I know how to safely shut it down before moving it.
Yes, thats what I did too - feels way better to do it the right way :)
You are a Star Man - I was fighting with that issue for a few years and you gave me the light. Cheers!!!
I am currently running Firmware v04.05.00-342.
This version has the "SHUT DOWN" button built into the web UI. All good there.
Either way, thank you for this video!
Stay with v04. I am one of the many people who regrets updating to OS5. It's inexcusably terrible.
Thanks man your videos helped me regain my data and safely shutting down my cloud in 2024

So what we have here is a failure to communicate (the rest of this rant is directed at WD, not you). Secondly, once you have "hibernated" the thing, there is no easy way to start it up again except *PULL THE POWER PLUG AND REINSERT IT AGAIN* 🤬🤬🤬
Sometimes I wonder about the nerds that work in places like WD. Don't these people have *_any_* connection to the real world?
It takes 10 minutes to tell us!!!!
It could have been shorter, that's true. I personally had the problem that at first I either did not understand short code-only solutions or was afraid to break something, thats why I chose a slower pace for this video. Anyway, thank you for the feedback, I put timestamps in the description now, hope that helps :)
