    So like, I get not wanting to be too strict with track limits - constant arguments about track limit penalties for a car putting half a tire width over a white line by 0.3mm is utterly tedious. But like...surely there's a better solution than 'no track limits altogether'? Turn 1 can just be taken as wide and flat out as you like, making it even more difficult to pass there, and what's the point in having the barriers set that far back from the track, presumably for safety reasons so cars don't just slam flat out into the wall, only for the cars to run out right up against it on corner exit anyway? Surely that just negates any safety benefit? Like, this isn't even a track limits thing anymore, it's just running an entirely different layout of the track. Which sucks, given Watkins Glen is such a good track as is, and NASCAR there has consistently been awesome for many many years. Like, even if there's just a rule in place that says you can't put all four wheels completely outside the white lines or outside the rumble strips on the corner exits, that still gives drivers an actual track limit to adhere to without being so strict that people get pinged over the tiniest infringements.
    I get that paving the runoff areas has its benefits over gravel traps, but in the same way that Darlington designed the banking as a safety feature only for it to become the preferred racing line for drivers as it was faster, drivers are going to take advantage of anything they feel like will give them extra pace around the lap. And if that means inventing a whole new track layout because there's nothing stopping them doing so, so be it. If you want another example of what I mean, check out the 2020 Spa 24 Hours pole lap - track limits were relaxed for qualifying, and the combination of that and paved runoff areas meant the lap was basically run on an entirely different layout of Spa xD It was a farce, and the track limits were reinstated for the race.

  • @roycevegaracing
    @roycevegaracing Год назад +3

    Why are they allowed to go over the run off on turn 1 so far out?
    I know you can carry way more speed that way but
    What’s the point of having the curves there ?

    • @jamesburroughs4709
      @jamesburroughs4709 Год назад

      Because back in the day it was a gravel runoff. In today's NASCAR world, if they had left the track the old way, every race would have lasted 1 lap, because all the cars would be in one giant hump of twisted metal at the bottom of the hill in turn one. Back in the day, before the "driving thru any and everyone to gain a spot" mentality, that gravel was not an issue and they have had to keep modifying the runoff to accommodate the increased Road Rage scenarios. Hope that helps explain.
