This is an ant keeping hobbyist's dream! The ant farm in this video is something I have absolutely fantasized about having as a kid! In this vlog, we explore the incredible, mind-blowing Atta sp. exhibit of the Espace pour la vie Montreal Insectarium. The exhibit houses a 7 yr old colony of leafcutter ants living in acrylic containers and a network of branches, flowers, and plants.
What makes the exhibit so amazing is that the setup allows for the display of the leafcutter ant workers' foraging behaviours, where they seek out plat matter, cut up the selected leaves and flowers, and carry these huge plants pieces back to the nest where they proceed to chew them up and cultivate the most impressive fungus gardens, which nourish the entire ant colony. We explore in this video just how spectacular these ants and this setup are! Hope you enjoy an epic ant geeking out session!

I love how when he calls the ants the "most technologically advanced and species" two ants bonked into each other XD
And your point is nothing bonks into each other every once in a while?
"Technologically advanced"
I'm sure two scientist have bumped into each other in the middle of a busy day
@@ndot3886 its just a funny thing. Nothing to get so serious about.
Big Country Yeah seriously, I agree. Dude needs to chill😎
I have a question: How do the people in the insectarium deal with things, when the leafcutter ants have their mating flights?
LOL? I don't think the ants would have their nuptial flight because they're indoors
Some ants don't have nuptail flights
LOL? Oh Jesus
This guy is a legend. He makes all of his videos so interesting. Keep up the great work! 😁
Anthony Vivona I agree they are so informative. I love his videos. Makes me think why are people hitting the thumbs down..You know what you are getting into before you even start watching the videos. I guess some people are just have to be negative all the time while they sit back on that big comfy sofa
Thank you. I appreciate the support and feedback!
Its Mikes Bustos from thr Philippines. the owner of the channel
I agree 10000000000000x
Plot twist the sky owns a museum about ants 🐜 uwu
It makes sense why they would build a nest in a sewer. It will be moist and humid so ideal fungus growing environments
Leaf cutter ants are truly a scientific wonders of the world. Just amazing!

Greetings from Canada, AC Family! Thanks for watching! It would mean a lot to me if you could LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, & SUBSCRIBE if you enjoyed this video so I can keep making more ant videos for you every week! Ant love forever! So what did you guys think of this setup?
The answer to the AC question is They help to decompose waste on the ground.
AntsCanada it was great
I WANT MORE VIDEOS PER WEEK!!! ONE IS NOT ENOUGH!!!
Hi
AntsCanada can you make a video of your fish pls
“I can literally watch this for hours how bout you guys”
Me binge watching this channel for the past 5 hours ... uhhhh
Me too!

How do they keep alates from escaping?
Joe Higashi I totally forgot to ask Dominic. I will find out! I was also wondering this.
I’m down to watch that 24 hr surveillance
There is a leafcutter ant colony behind my house, i thought they ate the leaves and grass, its nice to know that they actually are feeding a fungus that they can eat later.
Yeah but they still destroy our plants lol still cool to watch tho 👌
Fungus is required for some plants to thrive
where do you live?!
*can i come over*
Lucky
I suppose because they’re relatively big, most people in Brazil have seen them carrying leaves to their colony. Occasionally we come across on legions of them making huge lines like a traffic jam carrying cut leaves before the rain season in the northeast.
They are about the size of big carpenter ants.
Do a new colony! This is a really cool setup, and plz livestream yourself building the setup and livestream that new colony! Love the vids! Keep it up ❤️
orimis islanzadi Noted! Thanks for watching!
OMG YOU REPLIED THAT MADE MY DAY ❤️❤️❤️
ANT CANADA
When he said they all depend on each other, that was deep
AntCanada: What do you feed your ants?

AntCanada: thats boring i feed mine moniter lizards
r u taking about the fire nation!?
They are collecting food for the grasshoppers
I'm so proud of myself for getting the reference XD

It still shocks me how many people think A Bug's Life was just an "okay" Pixar film.

Oh my gosh these ants are frickin amazing
I'm not sure how I got here or why I'm still here but this seems to be interesting enough to keep my attention.

I hope you start a weaver ant colony and they escape into your place! Haha!

Why are you talking to yourself 😂 😂 😂
Hello Mikey a.k.a. AntsCanada
You wish! If they do I hope they bite you in the night!
I couldn't tell you why RUclips recommendations popped this in front of me, but thank you, AC, for allowing me to find newfound appreciation for these magnificent animals
You should give us an update on the mantis!
Oh please do!
i am a watermelon now eat me yes
Yeah. I almost forgot about the mantis.
I used to have that exact picture of a watermelon as my Facebook profile picture
Lemme eat you!!!!
All these people complaining about a late video, it's a lot of work to make high quality videos. Give him a break.
Owen Prescott Agreed. The camera quality is already amazing, besides he could've just half assed the whole video, but nope, he made it the best he could, yet people are still complaining.
Ikr he does surch a great job it’s hard to look after ants letalone video them for RUclips it takes time if people are going to complain mabye they should try.
ikr. and ants dont do things on request.
Cry babies
Owen Prescott yea, be he glad he got it out, dont be a downer
But, how did the fungous start? Every queen of this species takes a small piece of fungous with it, and they keep it alive as long as they live. But my question is, how did it start?
Ties We don't know. It happened millions and millions of yrs ago. Amazing!
Ties they probably found it growing on some rotten bark probably as a normal edible fungus, and then evolved together into a niche species of ants and fungus. (My best guess)
i think they leave the leafs in a place and the Fungous start to grow on his own when the conditions are right
Ties maybe once 2000000 years they found the fungus an then start to feed them
Ties Ties
Personally, I would actually want to see all of the ant farms...they all have so many different personalities...do you think it's possible to make a series with the 24 hour streams? Every week, a different colony!!
I still wonder how that museum keeps tropical temperature and humidity in a visited room.. xD
Nordic Ants XD LMAO im subscribed to u
lights
I don't know about this one but I've been in some museums that make the entire room a tropical temperature and humidity. I was dying in there, too humid to stay comfortable.
I was in a zoo in Germany that did it in the middle of freaking winter with a bunch of guests. I dunno how, but it's possible.
Nordic Ants
how is the spreading prevented in the antarium? Don't leafcutter ants have nuptial flights?
R Won I was wondering this as well but completely forgot to ask Dominic about it. I will find out!
It is probably because they don't get environmental signals like high humidity
Don't these kind of places have areas where you are checked for anything trying to hitch a ride and escape?

RedHead Productions nah you’re stupid
The yellow crazy ants. Guys upvote this so he sees. That tank has the most diversity and would probably be waaaaay more eventful then any of his other tanks
This is so cool. I was just recently at the cologne zoo where they have a leafcutter setup as well and I explained to my mom how they grew fungi which I only knew because I watch your awesome channel :D She totally didn't believe it until she read it there at the zoo. Ants are so awesome!!!
+Jojo of Faraway You're an ant genius!
try raising leaf cutter ant with weed plant I would like to see how their hive look like
The marijuana plant leaves do not contain much THC (the psycho active thing in weed) even then unprepared marijuana does not affect the human body. You have to put it through a process called de carbing. Basically you heat it so you are able to digest it. Smoking marijuana heats it as it turns into smoke so you do not have to “cook it”. Even then I do not know much about ants or how they digest anything but if I had to put money on it I would say they would look the same.
@@JarvisPatterson01 you're saying that about a human however, ants are much smaller and would as so require a much smaller dosage to be effective.
not really mate.
ants are tiny in comparison to us.
also: the leaves are in fact processed... by the fungus... where the reaction does in fact resolve in the needed reaction to trigger the effect.
the fungus that the ants eat would have much higher THC levels than e.g. a simple joint.
They also would need to have the right receptors to be affected, which insects unfortunately do not have. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11447587
i'm pretty sure it's called a cannabis plant tho...
For a sec I thought u actually got those leaf cutter ants but still great video
Fl4mingSpartan If I ever live in South America I definitely will have a colony of these!
AntsCanada I live in Singapore and I have never found a queen ant 😭
I am an ant keeper too! I live in the Singapore. I have been there too
Steven Fidenato which part of Singapore? I usually try to find them in East Coast Park and Yishun Park. Lots of fire ants but no sign of the queens. I found a queen ant once but it was unfertilized so I released it
Live in the downtown core
Extra notes: Just found out that this particular leafcutter ant species is Atta texana, and is actually also found in Texas and Louisiana, as well as the Northeastern states of Mexico! This is great news for those of you who might be from those areas because it means you can catch the queens and keep this species!
AntsCanada do you recomed this kind of ant for mi first antfarm? Im from México, great Chanel by the way.
YEAH TEXAS

I was about to say, I've seen this type of ant in texas when I grew up, it surprised me when they said it was from south america. But we also had fire ants... and those are NO joke.

If there is an ant that eventually takes over the world, I hope it's leaf cutters
But leaf cutter bites are extremely painful and they can find a weak spot on u
Not really. They'd probably use humans as leaves. I don't want fungus growing out of my brain...
ants have intelligence, but not enough cennection with each other to tacticly kill whole species like humans
I wasn't thinking an ant vs human thing, more like a planet that is dominated by an ant species or millions of years after humans go extinct and leaf cutter ants have evolved into the dominate species.
too late fire ants already did that.
Nice vídeo! Here in Brazil those ants are called "saúvas" and their queen is called "tanajura". From october to december they reproduct and you can find a lot of tanajuras in the streets. They can cause a lot of damage in farms and even destroy concrete.
Dude you've made me love ants. I used to breed leopard geckos as a youngin, you're making me want to do hours and hours of research and beginning to think about potentially raising a colony in the future. Also, VERY great channel. You do an amazing job!
What does the Insectarium do when there are leafcutter alates? Won't they be able to fly out? This is probably a stupid question haha
+Rookspirit I actually don't know!

I remember when I was a kid, i made a little “ant hill” in a pot of plant that we have and I even made a flag so they know there’s ants in it. And everyday I would give them peanuts. And then one day, a storm came and my ant hill was destroyed. I was so sad. I felt like I was their mother. Or should I say ant queen? :D Now I wish I could build an ant colony when I finally finish college.
vivien figuro good idea
Yooo same thing bro I use to stir up some dirt and offer food out until one day a queen actually set up there and I had my own bull ant farm I had them for a for awhile then this special ant appeared. You see most of these ants wrre2 dark red in color and there were 3 kinds the queens the workers and the guards (the ones with the huge jaws) and a bright orange guard appeared one day he was humongous and there was no other like him. Me and my brother called him Sun god. Eventually a hurricane here down in florida hit and they were still there until we stopped seeing sungod and they died out
I made something like that too. Aside from yours i destroyed them by myself because they start to bite me when i accidentally step them lol

Your fire ant colony is so huge it would thrive in a set up like this. I don't know if you'd be able to keep them in during their mating flight though. You might be able to put 2 tanks together to increase the height and have a side entrance for cleaning and feeding. Or open top and use a ladder lol. Just a thought

Omg! Hi mikey! Im feom Montreal and seing this video took me many years back when i was a kid my father took me to the insectarium and i remember the exact set up. See, this colony might be seven years old but the set up it way older! I think i was 7 years old myself when i forst saw this (and it was like a new installation for the insectarium, witch was thereason of our visit) so if my math is correct, the installation will be 15 years old this summer! It was much smaller back then, there was only 2 or 3 acrilic fongus farms! How facinating to be brought back in time like that!
Wait, what happend to this channel? Last time i watched was quite a while back, but holy hell! Hd camera with proper focus? Check. Social media platform links? Check. Very good editing and soundwork? Check. Narration recorded with high quality microphone? Check.
