    Coyote ventures deep into the heart of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula to get up close with one of the most complex, coordinated, and physically strong insect species on the planet... the leafcutter ant. These incredibly intelligent creatures and work in perfect harmony to achieve a common goal: farming fungus, which plays a critical role in the rainforest ecosystem. Unfortunately for Coyote and his hand, he learns a hard lesson about what happens when the soldiers of the colony encounter a perceived threat!
    Special thanks to Jim Cordoba for hosting the Brave Wilderness Team and leading this expedition into the world of leafcutter ants. Might have to check them out next, Coyote. lol

    • @LobyDobster
      @LobyDobster 3 месяца назад

      They're definitely worth looking at, but they're in no way stronger than a soldier leaf cutter. I don't know if you've seen them in person I can say they're a lot more powerful than they seem even after seeing that one hold the wallet. Army ants are scary for other reasons though.

    • @WackyModder84

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Army Ant mandibles so strong that you can literally use them for makeshift staples for surgical procedures? I remember reading something about that in the past that once those guys latch on with those giant pincers, they ain't letting go AT ALL. What I will definitely agree with, however, is that Leaf Cutter Ant Soldiers have sharper jaws than Army Ants, as they specialize in cutting, whereas Army Ants specialize in piercing / stabbing with their jaws.

    • @anthonygrate9065
      @anthonygrate9065 3 месяца назад +2

      @@WackyModder84hello wacky! The soldiers of the leaf cutter ant were used by the Mayans in the way you described. The soldiers of the leaf cutter ant have their jaws wired shut 24/7. The only thing that opens them are the huge muscles on its head. Therefore once the main body is ripped off and the ant dies. The jaws remain wired shut ! A makeshift stitching! I wonder if the ants you mentioned have the same method? Let me tell you from experience, the leaf cutter ant soldier will slice through your skin like butter.

    • @WackyModder84

      OH! I thought it was Army Ant Soldiers that were used for that, not Leaf Cutter Ant Soldiers. Either way, thanks for the clarification!

    • @LobyDobster
      @LobyDobster 3 месяца назад

      @@WackyModder84 I believe you can also use leaf cutters for that. I once stepped on one of those ants barefoot (ouch) and remember seeing its bodyless head embedded in my foot latching on as if it were still alive. I don't know too much about army ants either though. I just know that there are several species and that they have blind soldiers that guard their massive migration paths while eating everything they find (even chickens).

      I was sitting outside of church the other day, and a little ant crawled up this metal box next to the bench I was sitting on and it dropped off a dead one. I was taken aback because ants place there dead in the same spot, like a mass grave, but this one didn't do that. I like to think it had a special bond with that other one, and it wanted it to be someplace special, so it let me know that it died so I could pray for it. So I did. It then walked back to wherever it came from. I thought it was pretty cool.

    Cant you make an ant sized robot with a live camera and go find the queen

    • @hydra9627
      @hydra9627 3 месяца назад

      No, you can’t. Ants would attack it since it’d lack the pheromones of the colony
      Edit: With Black Crazy Ants the idea might work.

    • @nxsus5653
      @nxsus5653 3 месяца назад

      @@hydra9627 perhaps build it out of diamond or something so the ants can't harm it, or somehow add the pheromone to the robot. Idk lol I'm not a scientist or an engineer

    Ive seen a video of someone showing how they used ants to close up a cut. Let them bite, pulling the wound together. Then pulling the body off. The head remains with the jaws shut still. Holding the wound closed to heal
