Looking into Time's unreleased songs

  • There are several songs that were cut from ELO's Time when it made the transition from being a double album to a single album. Some of the songs made their way to the public as B-sides on singles, and were later included on the CD rerelease of the album. However, there are two cut songs that have never been heard - in this video, I discuss what we know about them.
thanks to the ELO subreddit for helping me out here!
    background music used:
Space Junk Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy
    World 3 - Super Mario Galaxy 2

I never knew some ELO fans dislike this album. To me, this album is on the same level as "Out Of The Blue".
It sucks that Time could've been a lot more fleshed out and more jam packed.
Alas! Maybe we'll get these songs in 2095.

"Time" and "Out of the Blue" are both easily in my top favorite albums of all time list, while OotB is probably slightly higher on my list, 21st Century Man is my favorite single track from ELO.

There's been an update on Sad Affair! The person who originally posted the lyrics on was Brendan Higgs, who _is_ mentioned in the "thank you"s of Time's inner sleeve, meaning what he said WAS true. However - the owner of Time's 5-20-81 acetates confirmed there is no track that fits the description shown in the post, so it's likely that Sad Affair was a song demoed by Jeff in 1981, and NOT track B3.

@@roobenn I feel you will enjoy Daicon IV. It uses Prologue and Twilight, and became a highly referenced part of Japanese animation culture -- invoked even in Five Star Stories, and Densha Otoko. It was made by 12 students as a love-letter asking, "what if we put aside our petty arguments and cooperate? Can something beautiful come of that?" and the lead animator, Hideki Anno (who would go on to do Evangelion) is a very big ELO fan, having essentially made a music video for the two tracks as an opening video for a live convention, which was only finished 45 minutes before the event.
I remember having it on a grainy VHS tape. Showing a family member this, they put the LP of time onto a cassette for me. When the tape broke, I got another. It was the very first album I brought for myself when I was old enough. We still regularly sing the whole song when travelling back from the airport when I visit them, even though now I'm decades older. It has simply become tradition.
Time is a magical album, and it led me to the rest of ELO. A magical time to be sure.

Hi there! I met Brendan Higgs a couple of times through a friend. He came to my wedding in 1996 and gave me as a wedding gift 2 tapes containing 2 unreleased songs, knowing I was a huge ELO fan. One of the tapes contained Sad Affair. It definitely sounds like a track from the Time sessions. It might have been me that posted the lyrics on that website. I was searching for another copy of the song because sadly, I had let someone borrow the tape to dub it back in the late 90s and it was lost. I was (and am) a member of the Showdown ELO fan club and I think that’s where I posted the lyrics that I remembered. I still remember Joe the song goes, too. But it exists only in my head until I can get another copy. It’s not that great of a song, to be honest. Jeff made the right call to leave it off the album. If you’d like to know the melody and how it goes, contact me and we can set something up.

One thing I don’t hear people bring up is the interludes between tracks, which are often sourced from other tracks on the album (such as the isolated strings and backing vocals from the chorus of “21st Century Man” or the isolated strings of “Rain is Falling” being sped up and reversed as the intro to “The Way Life’s Meant to Be”). At the end of “Twilight,” just as the sampled pinball machine noises lead into “Yours Truly, 2095,” there’s a reversed string section that sounds like nothing else on the album (or the released bonus tracks). My best bet is that this is sourced from one of the two cut tracks (most likely “Time Transporter”).

When Time Stood Still is an interesting song. What event caused time to stand still? Does it refer to the Time Traveller in some way? There are suggestions that it refers to the death of John Lennon. And that's what made 'time stand still'. Some words in the lyrics could be hinting at this. 'Submarine' is the most obvious one. 'Plastic flowers' from 'Lucy in the Sky'. Other words are obscure. 'Art' references could point to trained artist Yoko. 'Marble Halls' was where they lived in New York. The whole tone of the lyrics is gloomy, so that fits. But do the dates of Lennon’s death, December 1980, fit with the record? It was recorded in early 1981, so yes, it was possible, but it’s more likely the song had been written some time before December 1980. Has Jeff ever given a clue about its meaning, I wonder.

When I immersed myself in ELO's TIME in the 80's, it immediately conjured up a sense of nostalgia for the era I was actually living in... making me APPRECIATE the decade I was growing up in (knowing the future would soon catch up with the relative simplicity of present day life)... now, 40 years later, I still appreciate how rich, vibrant, innocent and hopeful the 80's were... as compared to the fast pace, dehumanizing technology and the lack of actual depth we currently face as we race onwards in a rush to erase history and pretend to create "something better".

Some of these lyrics seem a bit Beatles-y, mentioning submarines and plastic flowers. People failed to realise that bands evolve; Jeff just moved ELO in a direction no-one expected, but given that electronic music started to rule the charts from '81, Jeff was at the leading edge of the wave.
If you put "When Time Stood Still" after "Yours Truly; 2095" and "Julie Don't Live Here" at the very end of the album, it suddenly becomes a very dark album indeed (watch the film "Interstellar" if you don't know what I mean and bear in mind this album was released over thirty years BEFORE that film).
As far as "Bouncer" goes, it feels like it belongs more to "Secret Messages" than "Time" because of it's sound

ELO stopped being good after Secret Messages (1983) and after they binned the orchestra for good. Balance of Power (1985) was ehh and Zoom (2001) just didn't sound like ELO.
But Time stands out as unique. A complete break from everything that came before, and also after. It sounds nothing like either Secret Messages or Discovery (1979), and is their only work to tell a cohesive end-to-end story.
Also, if you hadn't heard Time in its entirety and then tried to listen to ELO's greatest hits compilation you'd find it made absolutely no sense out of context. You wouldn't understand the reference to 1981 in The Way Life's Meant To Be, for example.
