I've found it pretty fun so far. It gives me heavy minecraft vibes and I'm loving it. Gives me that same sense of discovery I felt when I first played minecraft xbox 360. Different blocks have unique attributes such as diamonds acting as spike blocks, which hurt you, or massive trees which grow when they react with water. Very unique but I'm interested to see where this will go. Its nothing like roblox.
It wouldn’t be the first time. Their entire mobile line-up is afflicted with it and I’d make a bold argument to say that Amiibos are a type of microtransaction. Both of those have turned to disuse in recent years, it’s a shame though not unexpected that they’ve returned to the practice.

But 20 years ago, sure - for quite a few years World of Warcraft was nothing more than buying the game and having a subscription (to be clear, the subscription was just for access to the game, no other perks). Guild Wars started as a game you just bought, and they made their money on regular expansion packs. There were also a few other MMOs that went one of those ways. I don't know where those games are now as I no longer play MMOs, but there was a time when even the always-online MMOs didn't have microtransactions. Sadly, it sounds like those days are gone, even with Nintendo.
I think this is supposed to be the alpha or beta version of the actual game that will come out eventually. They are just doing a online stress test first in order to fix any issues.
It's still going to be this same game, just more fleshed out. There's no way they went this in depth & programmed all this as a test for a completely different game.

On the topic of Microtransactions, I would like to remind the court of how Nintendo have offered odds and ends for rewards for Online subscribers. I literally pulled up the eShop to verify, you can download a special rug and a Switch Lite furniture item in Animal Crossing, 3000 SP and 30 large snacks in Smash Ultimate, and 100 Gem Apples for Super Kirby Clash. The last of these being important since that is a Nintendo home console game that did have Micros. The other two were small rewards that are just cosmetic things that realistically you could still obtain without an NSO subscription. But Kirby is a game that did have micros, and was a game released on consoles. So I don’t think we need to sound any alarm bells that Nintendo are going to poorly monetize every game moving forward. This game has Microtransactions, from what we outsiders not in the play test can tell. But I don’t think Nintendo are going down some dark road, this is very likely another small one off thing and not the new norm. I mostly say this because I know how people react to these things- everyone freaks out and assumes the worst without even stopping to calmly consider anything else.
So it sounds like every player is on one gigantic planet? I think it would be cool if each player can get their own planet and play with their friends like a Minecraft world. Please let me know if I'm wrong about that.
It's actually mindblowing to see nintendo is making not only a masive multiplayer game but adding a microtransaction system to their main games. Sounds like a whole new step or a making a different path in other direction. Honestly it feels really out of the zone and personally makes me feel excited of what will come.
I can just imagine this being a miiverse 2 of some type, but it’s a game that is actively receiving income. The idea that we could play with other people in a world of other dedicated Nintendo fans seems so interesting to me, especially if it’s a literal game versus just message boards. But who knows, we’ll just have to wait for now I suppose.

I’m 41 years old and have been gaming since the early 80s. But Minecraft and Roblox are not games that interest me in the slightest. This project is disappointing

I don't think the proximity chat will be something that Nintendo will add. Maybe private game chat but not public one. Just the question test had players spamming emotes so maybe proximity voicechat would be way more chaotic; by not saying in general Nintendo really wants to keep a really deep moderation for the safety of minors.
The more gameplay I see the more I want to play this, feels like I'm missing out. I also get annoyed seeing other people who can play it not really like or care for it.
I saw a screenshot and it looked kinda unfinished. But understandable it’s just a play test. I think there’s more to this and we might get a much better looking final product

To be honest I hated it, it has an awful tutorial and very confusing and messy UI. Obviously it's not finished and on a fundamental level it's not a bad idea for a game, but I'm baffled that Nintendo let players see it in this state. Also not happy about the micro transactions, especially since paid online is required unlike fortnite and other F2P games. If microtransactions are just in this game then whatever but if it sets a precedent thats worrying. At least the online is surprisingly robust, it didnt have any significant problems which is promising for the future. I'll give the game another try this weekend and hopefully it clicks a bit more.
