In our penultimate debate of the term, we are looking at the legacies of new labour, and its impact on British politics today. With the benefit of hindsight, we will judge Blairism and whether or not it actually saved Britain.

Proposition
1. Katie Heggs
Katie is a second-year undergraduate student reading History and Politics at Churchill College. She won the right to speak through open audition.
2. Coco Huggins
Coco is a second-year PhD student in Geography at Pembroke College. Her research evalutes UK Welfare Reform and policy responses to the 2008 financial crisis. She is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is about to commence a research post at the Department for Work and Pensions. She won the right to speak through open audition.
3. Lord Chris Smith
Chris Smith, Lord Smith of Finsbury, is a former Mamber of Parliament for Islington South and Finsbury and served as the Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport from 1997 to 2001. While at university, he was President of our Society, and is chair of the CUS Board of Trustees.
Opposition
1. Benjamin Rudd
Benjamin is a first-year PhD student in Education at Darwin College. He won the right to speak through open audition.
2. Simon Baynes MP
Simon Baynes has been the Members of Parliament for Clywd South since 2019. He is currnetly Parliamentary Private Secretary to DCMS and was formerly Minister for Justice and Tackling Illegal Migration. While at Cambridge, he was chairman of CUCA and President of our Society.
3. Andrew Mitchell MP
Andrew Mitchell has been the Member of Parliament for Sutton Coldfield since 2001. He has served as Chief Whip, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurary, Secretary of State for International Development and, most significantly, as President of our Society.
