Seeing this makes me smile .... miss you Buttons, RIParadise! He was 1 good bradda, and always laughing and smiling good times ! Aloha from westside Oahu
What a iconic human, so much character on and off the surfboard. Rest In Peace uncle Buttons I know you are getting the best waves that are on offer up in Da heavens.
I remember seeing that episode. I felt really sad that he had fallen into drugs. He was way before his time, back in his day and such a kind lovable person. Rip Bruddah
Rest Peacefully Buttons I miss the times when I lived at V Land in those row of homes that where ripped down in the 80s ya I miss when you would come in at the crack of dawn and say get up you lazy haoles, I know you and Jay are up there hanging out together I miss you both and love you guys REST IN PEACE TO BASICALLY MY ENTIRE CREW BUT MY BOY ANGIE RENO IS STILL CHILLING AT THE WALL IN MALIBU
Cool bit! I got The Missus on her first wave at Waikiki the same way, and she took it all the way in. Biggest smile on her when done. The binoculars were funny. Work better with lense caps off.
To me, around circa 1980, he and Larry Bertleman were the best shredders. The contest circuit judging is fairly subjective. They all could get deep barrel rides and these guys were all very good, but Buttons and Larry Bertleman were seemingly the best cut back, top turn carvers, slash-back artists of that golden era of surfing. Could it be that Buttons and Larry B did not have the GQ good looks of Shaun Thompson and Peter Townend or the bushy-bushy blonde hair of Rabbit Bartholomew? Was marketing the personalities as much a factor as talent in the fledgling IPS contest circuit. Shaun Thompson cut a dashingly handsome champion and possessed the look big name sponsors were seeking at the time(just look at any ads for 1980). I don't know, but they seemingly did not get the contest results representative of their relative talent. Like anything in sports, especially X-sports, the natural progression and the pushing of limits makes later generations better. Today there are no-name surfers abound that out-rip the best of 1980, but I believe Buttons and Larry B would still be able to hold their own. They seemed to consistently push the limits to make it where, "Anything Is Possible".
Way before his time. Early 80s at panics, 4-6 ft…pulling into the barrel at the peak on every wave. Never saw anyone come close to his talent, that includes touring pros.
I remember seeing this as a kid. I thought Buttons was just the coolest dude. Thanks for posting this!

Buttons and Bertelmann still look contemporary, the rest you mentioned don't.
Aloha Buttons!!!
Great surfing
