I found the same issues with eating raw kale, but I started mixing it in when I cook potatoes or other vegetable vegetables and I can digest it so much better. I need to try a arugula a little bit more. I normally am a spinach person, but I’m definitely interested in trying a arugula by itself. Great video today!
I agree, I really like the iceberg the best! I used to eat romaine, but now it is full of sand and dirt. I don't know what they do differently today but it's not an improvement, lol! Your salad looks delicious!!😊
I can have it with other greens in a salad. As we age, we seem to need to know what is in the foods we eat due to health issues (sigh). Your salad looks delicious Steve!
It's only been during the past several years that I've noticed Arugula on its own. I not only add it to salads but also to my stir fry and soup. Try wilting kale in a pan or water to soften it then add a little butter and lemon. In the old Berkeley Whole Foods (before Amazon takeover), they made a delicious kale salad. Someone tried to make it on their own and it was pretty close. Wilt the kale in a big pot with a little water. Turn it frequently for a few minutes, then add a little sesame oil, a tablespoon or two of soy sauce, your choice of seaweed cut up fine or wakame, sesame seeds, and a little salt. Now I have to find the recipe and make it soon! I'll probably throw in a little arugula too! Michael Pollans saying is "Eat (real food), not too much and mostly greens." By real food he means not processed but fresh. Stay healthy...
Growing up in the former ''Rubber Capital of the World'' (Akron), I am familiar with the smell of rubber!!! Never in my 60 years have I had arugula.......but you have inspired me to try it!!! Good morning to you and Jim 🌞
I have never had seagull or kale. Not a very adventurous old gal. Love your description. Have a great day and now I think I need to make a salad for my supper!
Hi Steve...I'm with you ...don't like anything except lettuce ....anything else I drown in dressing ..then I don't taste it.... LoL...have a great week.. Deborah 🇨🇦😜
I like arugula with parmigiana and a drizzle of lemon juice. With kale, drizzle some oil and salt, mix and put in the oven for a few minutes for kale chips.
To me, arugula is kinda peppery in taste. I like it mixed in with other salad greens. “Massaging” your kale before eating raw helps tenderize it and make it easier to chew and digest.
If you've had salads out at restaurants you've probably had arugula. I'm like you and more like iceberg lettuce in my salads. T hank for doing this video. You and Jim take care.
I put kale in smoothies. It’s the only way I can eat it. It smells and tastes like grass to me. Arugula is not my favourite, I find it to be bitter. I do love spinach though.
I love arugula, rock, rocket!! Yes, nutty, peppery, spicy. Try making your own balsamic viniagrette (tblsp dijon, couple tblsp good quality balsamic, salt pepper. then whisk in good EVVO, adding a couple tblsp at a time till you get flavor & consistency you want.
Ok Steve, I'm gonna share a little something with you and others. Be careful with those boxed Lettuce, etc, to me, it seemed that would it less likely to be spoiled etc because of packaging when it fact, i think it makes it spoil quicker, always pay close attention to expiration dates and stick to them, personally, I don't buy them that often and I'll just leave it at that🙀😹
I agree with you MrZ! I remember years ago that lots of people got botulism because they bought package cells like that in the plastic containers. Ever since then I stay far away from them. That’s why I didn’t even know arugula was sold in the stores because I never looked at those plastic containers. It’s crazy to think that it was already spoiled when I bought it. 🙁
I can eat an arugula salad, usually at a restaurant. Although I am not a picky eater, I do not like kale at all! Someone mentioned massaging kale to tenderize it…🤣even if I massaged the heck out of it, I still wouldn’t like it. Bon appetit Steve
Don't Greens (Vitamin K) also effect your blood thinners? For me Arugula is good in small amounts..... In some people Cilantro tastes like soap... Kale is good cooked in soups..... Older Kale is tough and strong, young kale is mild...
Okay I feel a little lame right now I thought Arugula was a cheese. You are looking great and I remember a couple months ago when you had your heart issue you were on Anticoagulants, I'm assuming you're not on them anymore as vitamin k can interfere with those medications.
Hi Tripper, it does sound like a cheese lol! 😂 and thanks for mentioning vitamin K and anticoagulant. I am still taking blood thinners. Thanks for the heads up. I will look into that and ask my cardiologist when I see him in two weeks. 😳😲🤔
I avoid buying Arugula. It just doesn't last in the refrigerator as long as other lettuces. I grow my own lettuce and I can get 4 weeks on lettuce. My lettuce is done by Thanksgiving. I have some garden kale but that will be gone soon. Sadly I will be back to store bought lettuce. I think this is the reason it tastes different. You should grow some. Container gardens will produce more lettuce than you can eat.
That’s awesome that you can grow your own Steve. I googled it, and apparently the rubber smell is when the arugula is spoiled. So you are right. It was spoiled the day I bought it. 😝
@@steveinpalmspringsca As a rule it has half the life in the refrigerator than other lettuce. They make vacuum sealing glass containers and then refrigerate it in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Doing this I get about 4 weeks with normal lettuce and two weeks with arugula. My main is lettuce butter crunch, then a purple bib lettuce (can't remember the name) and north pole lettuce (winters here in Wisconsin). I grow about 50-60% of my food in the city. Have a great week!
I imagine you were surprised!!!! it tastes peppery to me. usually I mix it with other lettuce. steve are you still on blood thinners? green leafy veggies are high in vitamin K...which effects it. I HATE KALE.

I always mix it with lettuce and baby spinach. But never alone. 👍 Thanks for sharing
I love arugula. It’s somewhat bitter which I like. I seek out a salad of arugula when I’m eating out and at home.
In Europe it shows up on sandwiches like lettuce. In England they call it "rocket."
Hey 👋 Steve - I love Arugula it has a pepper taste I think 🧐 olive oil w/ park cheese it’s yum
To me it has a nutty flavor. I love it with ranch dressing.
Now that's a gorgeous salad.
Arugula has a herbal pepper taste for me. I normally chop it up in a salad 🥗

Thanks for sharing Carla 👍
I enjoy salad everyday too. But i have never heard of that stuff. With ranch dressing.
It has a nutty flavor to it. I love it. That’s all I eat.
I enjoy it in a salad; never tried it on its own. I’ll have to try it now.
I luv arugula in a spring mix greens salad
Steve, your salad looks great! I do like arugula, even had it on a pizza one time. Happy Holidays everyone. 🎄 Paul
Oh wow, arugula on pizza. Now that would be interesting. Sounds kind of good. Happy holidays to you too Paul. 🎄🎁😄👍
@ Yes, it was, someone at the table ordered it and I had to try it.
I had a problem with sand in my greens too until I got a quality salad spinet! I wash my greeens in cold water then toss it in my spiner
I do use a spinner, but the water is brown that comes off of the lettuce and it looks disgusting! And I don’t think it ever gets it all . 😳
Enjoy your salad life! Ha ha. I am trying to eat more salads again too,

I use oakleaf lettuce in my salads. You can get it green or a darkish purple color. Im in australia so it may be called something else over there😊
Thanks for sharing that! I’ll have to look for it! 👍
I like arugula. It usually comes mixed in the spring mix salads that we buy at the store.
Rice vinegar olive oil and shaved Parmesan

Glad you enjoyed it Fig! 😄👍
Hi Steve I like it I grew it a couple years ago I love you chop it up and put it in soups❤
I’m sure it tastes and smells a lot better if you grow it yourself. 😄👍
I love arugula mixed with iceberg lettuce. For me it adds a peppery taste, but my taste and smell have been off since Covid.
Toss it in an egg dish. Frittata , scramble etc
I like arugula with parmigiana and a drizzle of lemon juice. With kale, drizzle some oil and salt, mix and put in the oven for a few minutes for kale chips.
I can't eat alot of Leafy veggies cause Its hard on my kidneys. I can eat it but not alot. God Bless and take care Steve. 😊
FYI, kale is high in oxalayes.
I thought when I looked it up and said it was very low in oxalate. I will have to double check. 🤔
I really admire your discipline. I've done a few things like. Cutting down on salt and caffeine but nothing like you. Good going!!!
Thanks! I’m definitely a work in progress. :-)
Love arugula, grow it every year. Great detoxer. Tastes peppery to me, no rubber smell
I later read that the rubber smell is what happens when it’s spoiled. I guess it was spoiled when I bought it. 😲
@steveinpalmspringsca Steve, try growing in a container outside, they take cold fine, very quick grower, 30 days bought for full grown.
Nice looking salad. I'm not really big fan of arugula, but I will eat it with other vegetables.
We all have different tastes! I ❤ asparagus & I cannot have eat them any longer due a medication conflict - my only food that I miss.💯👍
I used to love asparagus too. Unfortunately it’s also very high in oxalates! 😲🙁
Sprouts has the BEST no bake cookies!!! Look for them, as soon as they put them out they are sold.

Never heard of it.
enjoy Patrick in Ireland 🇮🇪
take your kale with a few drops of oil and some lemon and salt and "massage" it really changes the texture
I will definitely try that, thanks! 👍
Also arulgula sald goid with shaved parmesan, and just fresh lemon juice & EVVO as dressing
Everybody keep updated on all the food recalls daily!!!

Been eating it for 30 years since I lived in Italy. There’s many varieties in Europe with a variety of tastes and much tastier. Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing that James. Sounds like you guys are a lot healthier over there than we are here.

I put kale in smoothies. It’s the only way I can eat it. It smells and tastes like grass to me. Arugula is not my favourite, I find it to be bitter. I do love spinach though.
Wow that's wild ❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
If it was only $3 was it marked down? Therefore the smell. A few slimy leaves can really smell

Arugula is good mixed with other lettuce.
Kale in a smoothie!!!
Not fond of salads but happy you like them .Have a nice evening and am home only was in hospital two days back home with home therapy
Never tried it. But I think I will now. Cause I'm like you, Steve. I've had kidney stones. And I love spinach. Unfortunately can't eat it anymore
I love arugula and I've never smelled rubber.
Do you think it smells like rubber because of the packaging? I have never tried. It probably never heard of it merry Christmas to you and Jim.
That was the first thing I thought too. I googled it and apparently it smells like rubber when it’s spoiled. 😝

I thought the same thing. I looked it up and apparently when it's spoiled it smells like rubber! :-O
