- This morning, Oreo the Barred Rock passed away. It's always a tough day on the homestead when you lose an animal.

Thanks for watching Al's Homestead!
I’m sorry about Oreo , Al.
I know she had a good life with you .
Although this is a downside of caring for animals, the upside is that you gave Oreo a wonderful life and have cherished memories. So sorry, Al. RIP Oreo.
You gave her a great life
Sorry to see her go and so happy to know she lived so well
Good job, son
Thanks for the comment!
I'm so sorry to hear that, animal we love are dearly missed. Again, I'm so sorry ❤ from Northern Michigan
So sorry for your loss ,Alex and your family :( Oreo had a great life with your family and she always knew she was loved .. it’s so hard to lose our pets 💙
Sorry to hear that Al. We just lost our dog Bailey this morning so I feel your pain. It's never easy. Very nice tribute.
Sorry about your dog. It's tough for sure.
@@AlsHomestead Thanks buddy.
I’m so sorry man, may she rest in peace
Just like humans, chickens vary in their life spans. I have one roo that is almost 10 years now...three hens that are over 7 years and they still lay eggs (just not every day). Mine are free range and eat a great variety of greens, seeds, insects for protein...and flowers. I think their expanded natural diet contributes to their longevity. I do treat my chickens three times per year with ivermectin to worm and to prevent lice/mites. The ivermectin is dosed in their water and works great...but you have to ensure that your dogs and cats don't have access to treated water.
Sounds like your chickens have a good life. I wouldn't be surprised if my other Barred Rocks still live for several more years. A couple of them don't seem to be slowing down that much. I've been using diatomaceous earth mixed in their feed for worms, maybe I'll have to put it in their dustbathing spots to help prevent lice as well.
Sorry Al...she enjoyed the life that God gave her! Watch any of the girls that were buddies with her. I've got a Dominique (looks a lot like a Barred Rock), that when her buddie passed she went into a depression and lost weight. I had to feed her a special diet of raw liver, egg, yogurt, olive oil and sea salt, three times a day until she got built up again. I did that with Gracie too! Dominique is still going strong! She turned 10 (ten) last May! I did lose one at 5 years old though. I have a cemetery of pet chickens in one corner of our yard and pet dogs and a cat in the other corner over the past 30 years. Again, I'm sorry. I know it's sad. Thanks for letting us know!
Thanks for commenting. Glad to hear your Dominuque is doing well!
Thank-you!
That sucks brother!! Been in your spot! These high breed chickens get 3-5 years. I had 5 barred rocks and fox got 1! Mine are 3 years.
Yeah I had a production red (hybrid layer) die of old age at 4 years old. Seems like the purebreds last longer.
@@AlsHomestead I got into breeding American bresse. Dual purpose best eaten chicken! If you want let me know I’ll send you eggs in spring! I got few golden comet girls who are 4 not laying but are so friendly
I’m so sorry . Rip Oreo.
Will the other chickens mourn her passing the same way maybe a dog or cat would mourn the loss of a friend?
I'm not sure, they will probably miss her a little but the good thing is the 3 Barred Rocks still have each other.
Oh…so sorry Al.
Oreo was a fine chicken. She will be missed.
