I've lived in San Diego for 30 plus years. All my former and present vehicles are registered out of state. I learned from my neighbors down south from Tijuana. These cars and a boatload of klunkers are unregulated. I drive a 1995 5.9 v8 Grand Cherokee straight pipe with North Dakota plates. Register your cars in Nevada or Arizona. South Dakota charges $55 dollars every 3 years.
Back in the 80's, one could see quite a few old cars around, LA. BUT, now you only rarely see an old classic , usually on a weekend car show. CARB, is really, run,may I say by clueless bureaucrats.
To be fair. Since then those cars are now 50 years older, which makes them ever more valuable and more likely to become a hidden away treasure, than chosen as a daily driver.
@@mrtopcat2 you are correct, just common sense. Back in the mid 90's my nephew was big into the VW bug scene, with events like "Bug O rama", but there really weren't that many on the roads, even then. Today a bug would be considered a death trap, for a everyday vehicle.
Used to be said, there are 49 other states that are better. Unfortunately that number is decreasing. Washington decided to build light rail to fix the congestion because the roads have no lanes. It’s only costing the taxpayers something on the order of $1-1.5B per mile of track. Many areas paying for the service won’t get it, and others won’t get it for another 15-20 years. Oh, and our governor softened his stance on gas powered cars. It was originally slated that 2030 you couldn’t buy new and 2035 to register. Now it’s moderated because of California (shocker) to 2035 to purchase new.
Good to hear they softened their electric car mandate but I fear it is only done to slow the boil of the loss of freedom so the people dont know what is happening to them. I left WA last year for TX freedom.

Yup, seeing these comments about current gas prices all I can say is YIKES! In the 80's I used to watch them get CRUSHED at the wrecking yard it broke my heart watching good classic cars and truck's get crushed and sent to China. Now they want to modern California as China!
I lived in SoCal from the late 50s thru the early 2000s. One of the common daily sights was gray smoke haze layer you could see in the San Gabriel Mtns. Recently I made a quick trip back into the LA area and as I was driving out to leave I noticed same gray smoke haze layer. Seems like there has been misguided focus on the source of pollution. 50 plus years of ever increasing automobile pollution controls and no improvement. I don't think getting rid of old cars will make any difference at all.
Thank you for addressing this problem. I try to drive my Cuda on a Saturday cruise of no more than 20 miles, 2 or 3 times a month. What can we do? Should we start petitions?
My dad bought a 1966 Ford Mustang brand new it's been through my brothers and sisters and now it's mine. I've lived in California since 1961, I've done so much work to it fixing this car up. Every month I go to Java & jalopies vintage car Meetup. It's been really fun California has their heads up their butt. They need to find another way to solve their issues because it's not the vintage cars.
I would love to see the California air resources board be fully defunded why do I say that it's because we truck drivers are also under attack especially when we're driving older model trucks that are at least 10 years old that are still on the road I wish you guys that own classic cars good luck keep up the fight while we guys and our big rigs driving or going to do the same thing.

I went to the CARB website and there was nothing to confirm but the suggested legislation, fortunately. However, I did read the allegations on 3rd party websites. I almost wonder if they are testing the waters. I also feel that they would not want to muddy the waters prior to an election year. Many that participate in the classic car hobby are well established and mature individuals with little to no tolerance for legislation that would impede on their hobby. This includes, hot rods, low riders, drag races etc. it’s a broad stroke attack on a vast demographic.
Look at the SEMA show in vegas this year ,, billions of dollars ,hundreds of thousands of people employed in various involved fields , lifestyles invested in these cars,,,it seems that the cali politicians want to start a war with thier citizens ,,the so called leaders are insane, and should be treated as such,, vote the bastards out,,,or loose everything...
I would bet everything I had that if California passed a law that said that any car you own made before 1978 had to be either removed from the state or the state would confiscate it and crush it, the democrats there would still win by a landslide like they always do. The indoctrination that has gone on in that state does not allow you to question what the environmental nassis do, and if you question it your life will be destroyed...
Total bull 💩 its about control nothing more they want that gps switch to eventually tell you when and where you can use your vehicle. Till the point its a privilege so only the privilege will get to drive all others use government transportation
I'd like to be able to drive anywhere I want, but all of my cars rely on paved roads; I don't own an ORV. The last time I saw a major road construction was about 30 years ago, and that superslab cost over $10M per mile to build. For the privilege of driving on those nice paved surfaces, I am willing to pay through the taxes on the fuel I buy and the houses I own. And my newest car is 33 years old.

Why don’t they focus on providing funding to develop hydrogen internal combustion engines instead of these mineral-sapping EV bombs. Classic cars are barely used for heaven’s sake. I bet they contribute less than 1% of emissions.
You said it "wasting tax payers dollars" and I'll add destroying our rights. This is what CA government loves to do. take our wealth and freedoms. I'm actively looking for residence in another state.
They have been already doing the same non-sense for decades with red-sticker off-road vehicles (mostly 2-stroke motorcycles). They were referring to principle, while has not mattered to them, that these vehicles were rarely used to begin with. Meanwhile several thousands of 2-stroke leaf blowers have been operating by migrants hands all day, every day in the cities.
This is all about control they don't want you to be able to work on anything, think for yourself, or have fun. They don't want a single vehicle on the road they can't potentially totally control.
I drive a 65, for many reasons. Registration and insurance are cheaper, no smog bullshit, I can work on it myself, no digital crap, and I dont owe the bank. Easier to find my car in a crowded parking lot😁, I can lean on the car and not dent it!
they already got rid of alot of them with the cash for clunkers program, they are trying to kill internal combustion engines all together from all directions wether it be classic cars, closing drag strips etc.
I can understand your point about modern engine efficiency. Back in the day I couldn't get more than 10 mpg out of a 318 Fury no matter what I did. On your main point, once Sacramento starts on an issue like this, nothing seems to stop them.
I live in Canada and I try to drive my 31 fordmodel a truck as much as I can, in fact I like to think its my daily driver in the summer. That would suck if the gov would prevent me from driving it.
The city of Long Beach is expanding their cruise ship docking port next to the Queen Mary to allow for two more ships. Making for a total of three. The amount of pollution expelled by a cruise ship for the sole purpose of 2400 people to putter up and down the coast for a few days is MASSIVE and many of those people on these cruise ships are from neighboring states! BTW, Liane M. Randolph is the chair person of CARB. This is her plans for California.
well if thieves didnt run the government here then it wouldnt be a problem everybody needs to vote the losers out so every person old enough to vote needs to vote the scumbags out
My suggestion if CARB bans driving old cars altogether: move to Pennsylvania. Here you can get a classic car license plate which excludes you from emissions or safety inspections, under the condition that you don’t drive more than x amount of miles a year ( I can’t remember the exact number) which they don’t enforce. even if you modify a modern car, the police usually don’t bother you unless you have really dark tinted windows. Also it’s my opinion that CARB should be either dissolved or stripped of most of its power.
Nevada has a couple of different classic plates. Smog testing is only done in the Las Vegas and Reno/ Sparks areas. The limit is like 5000 miles per year. They did change about 1-2 years ago that you had to have " classic vehicle" insurance if you went this route. I know a couple people who said this is better anyway as most of these policies are cheaper. They take into account the low mileage driven and usually offer agreed value in the event of a loss. Thousands of vehicles from Nevada and other states flock to Reno every summer for hot August nights. The benefits to the economy are HUGE!!
Very well said brother, 100% agree. Great (and valid) points. Let’s just hope it’s a big bluff and backlash from the majority make the powers to be reverse on their ludicrous plans.
From what I have read, when they get all the info they need, they want to allow city's to ban then..so anywhere that is "nice" or pleasant to visit, like beach city's, they will allow bands and restrictions..totally BS
Colorado has recently been trying to adopt emission laws similar to California. Its unfortunate and and people really need to pay attention and see how much of a racket it really is. Recently here they have made it basically illegal to have a federal catylitic converter and you need to spend thousands not hundreds more for a California certified cat for an emission issue that is fundamentally idiotic. Pretty soon it will be you need to pay to make your classic car have 4 cats or whatever else they deem necessary you know to protect the environment. Because electric cars dont have negative environmental impacts right? We charge them up with happy thoughts and rainbows. And the batteries come from fairies for free not from lithium mines.
This kind of stuff is red pilling a lot of Californians. I think that the GOP should spend a lot more time and money focusing on California. There is way more people ready to vote for a Republican there than they appreciate.
I own 4 cars, 2 of them "hot rods", and my 35 minute commute is by bike. Having done that for the last 25 years, I think I am entitled to this opinion: If you live less than 30 minutes or less away from work by bike, unless you are physically or otherwise health disabled, you should find a better way to commute than by a single occupant automobile. See if this makes sense to you: Consume a lot of fuel, generating a lot of pollution to move a vehicle weighing over 3000 pounds to haul a load that is 5% of its weight (you), contributing to traffic jams, and then fighting for a parking spot, and possibly contributing to America's health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and other problems associated with lack of physical activity. The funniest thing I see everyday is at a stop light along my commute. Some times I get stopped at that corner, and next to it is a health club, with a line of stationary bikes along the front windows, and people huffing on them.
You miss the point - it's not about the classic cars, it's about banning ALL fossil fueled cars, then it will be about forcing everyone to use public transit or live in "15 minute cities" like what's been done in China. It's all about control. Just look at how the gun control stuff started - first it was a 10-day waiting period on handguns, then long guns, then magazine limits, then the handgun roster, and on and on. They want to control every aspect of your life and having a car is too much freedom for them to allow. Remember about 20 years back when they wanted to ban black as a car color because it took more A/C to cool them down on a hot day compared to white cars? Gee, almost sounds like automotive racism........
We need a strong bill. Stop letting cali do all this. Stop giving the dems power. Power to push bs power cars that the grid isn't even built to charge. Push a car most can't afford and honestly don't want. Wake the people up to the costs of ev. Show the money cost, stress to power and potential harm from the batteries. Micro radiation while sitting in the ev and also when it comes to disposing of the battery. The best environmental protection we could do to replace ev already exists. Ethonal burns CLEAN! You can change any car over to run it by changing fuel lines, injectors and fuel pump. We have so much empty land when driving up and down cali that could be growing the corn we can use for fuel. The whole country has plenty of empty land that could grow corn. We could be independent from foreign fuel and not need batteries with clean renewable fuel. We could possibly even be the largest exporter and possible put a dent in foreign oil if we did it right and grew enough. But no the politics involved get paid off from the countries (china) where the batteries come from, get paid from the tax of the car and from the charging of the car/ power plants. Wakt tf up people! Vote, vote red. Wake up and get out the dems bed.
They only get driven , like once every two weeks , make a stand get everyone involved, Sema, NHRA , E-magazines , I think emissions from China Russia an India would be more of a concern.
Very interesting video, John and thanks for it. Here in Europe it is very similar. Probably even worse. What about the production of batteries for electric cars? Is electricity made from air? Total nonsense. It is clear that those who have a classic car do not use it every day. This is somewhat of a lifestyle and a hobby. Othewise I would never change your Chally engine for a modern one.
Gov Newsome needs to realize what "accidents " may happen to him by banning old cars . He is pissing off thousands of car people that are NOT gonna give up their classics . Just sayin . . . . . . .
I ended up selling my '88 GTA Firebird because I gave up trying to make it pass a smog test. I still have an '88 Corvette that won't pass smog testing. It sits in my garage just collecting dust. I tried throwing parts (money) at it but it still won't pass. I gave up. I would move out of Commiefornia but both of my sons and their families have deep roots here.
Do not underestimate these people!! If they say they are coming for your classic cars they are coming after your classic cars. They will chip away and slowly break you to the point where you will give up.
Even with the modern fuel injection stuff both California and the Fed are banning us from using unlocked programmable ecus in our cars. Going as far as raiding ecu tuning and supply wholesalers as if they were drug traffickers. The irony of course with ecu tuning the closer you get to optimal air/fuel ratios the cleaner the engine burns and thus lower the emissions.
I used to live in San Diego and its an amazing town but I ended up leaving because of the poor leadership. I know many others who have done the same. It sucks because I love California. But I couldn't see myself ever being free living there under so many rules and regulations and constant attacks by the government.
Australian here. There was some talk here about banning old cars,as they are polluting. It never went anywhere. But never under estimate the politicians and the public servants as they dream up crap ideas to justify their own jobs. Our car fleet is old , nationally, average being 15 years, I believe. But cars from, even the '80',s are very rare on the road.
Totally agree. No one I know received a survey. There’s no room for logic on these issues (and all the insane issues today) they just jam their ideas through somehow.
It all starts with the voters. I was a former classic car owner for many years and am presently part of that "other" group of people that are being attacked by Newsom and Bonta.
The classic car industry is huge, and the results of the custom car ideas influence all of the major car manufacturers so all of us can enjoy really nice machines to operate in our daily lives. There are also those of us who can't afford a newer vehicle which include, bank loan payments, high insurance to cover the cost of the new vehicle should it be in an accident, and now the high cost of registering the car including smog inspections.
I think that when an engine swap is done there should be a update to the title being in the event modern engines are installed it technically is a newer version of its original manufactured condition also normally if someone does a engine swap they aren’t only just replacing the engine it’s a complete overhaul & rebuild frame off type of restoration that way the vehicles chassis can handle the performance modifications such as suspension & braking capability
If they really wanted to do something about pollution they would ban private jets. 😂

Keep your Commiefornia regulations out of my BattleBorn State & If You Leave Comiefornia your being forced out of that state by your voting decisions so if the people who you vote for totally go the opposite direction of everything they campaigned for & said they weren’t going to be swayed by lobbyists & their campaign contributors either recall the election & remove them from office just do your homework & research who your trying to put in control of your state if they say whatever the issues are at the moment & time they’re for or against they a couple years later the popular view changes differently than before if they have a track record of doing that they are a bullshit lying snake that will say they are supporters of this movement or legislation then the next day in a different county they say they are against the same thing the day before they supported they just are going to lie the entire time just to get elected then do the exact opposite of everything they were going to do
Sorry I said the same thing about 12 times don’t wake & bake
... Yeah, I received a freaking survey letter ... They wanted to know how often I drove, where I drove, how much fuel did I leave in the tank, where did I park it as in a garage, under a car port, etc. And a whole lot more if I intrusive questions ...
... I felt like returning a letter of my own, in effect:
Dear Nazis ... We have a contract. I am a licensed driver, in good standing. My cars are insured. My cars are registered. Therefore, I am upholding the terms of our contract. And you must uphold your end. You do not question the use and driving habits of ANY vehicle owner who is upholding and maintaining the terms of their State contract, whether they be classic or modern. Period. ...
California should ban Old politicians
In 1978, while living in Vacaville Ca, I bought a 1964 F100 and because it had a 1969 429 in it, I had to smog certify it to 1969 standards. Cost me a weeks pay and I removed it as soon as I left the certificate facility as it ran like crap. Rediculous Ca bullshit has been happening for decades.
In Nevada you would only have to certify it to 1964 standards. If you declare the GVWR over 6400 lbs the standards are more lax.
Need to become an illegal invader....the Feds and State will pay you for everything...including flights.
California would ban the wind if they could.
...don't forget the fog that roles into SF etc they'd have a go at that as well.
That would never happen there because most of the wind comes from the politicians when they speak.
They’ve definitely already banned common sense and morality in CA
The air pollution is not caused by the wind.
All the cry babies should move to the moon. No air pollution there 😂😂live with Gov. Moonding😂😂
Stay out of South Dakota. We are full and don’t want COMMUNISTS in our free state.
Youre making the assumption that they care about air or environment. Its not about any of that and only about total control.
You're completely right!
@@LifeatSpeed I wish I wasnt. This stuff is getting to me. Little by little, our lives are more like inmates.
They probably didn't send out any surveys. It's enough for them to claim that they did. That way they can also report whatever 'findings' they please.
Sounds like California hasn’t heard of a thing called the Constitution.
CA has lost it's marbles

Back in the 80's, one could see quite a few old cars around, LA. BUT, now you only rarely see an old classic , usually on a weekend car show. CARB, is really, run,may I say by clueless bureaucrats.
bureaucrats = idiots?
Jay Leno bought them all. 😅
I left WA last year for TX freedom.
well said. All those other states are being screwed up by citizens that flee states like California, NY, Washington, etc. they leave and set up "shop" in places like my state and start doing/voting for the same thing they bitched about where they left. Makes no sense.
Someone needs to log Newsom and Peloski’s Carbon Footprint .!
Everytime their jet’s takeoff and land !
I was unlucky enough to be stationed in California when in was in the Marine Corps in the mid 90's. I was so glad when I got to leave.
I said the same thing about Hawaii
@@dogsense3773 I hear ya. Did 3 years there before Cali.
Well said John. 100% truth!
Thanks Miguel!
Get out of California, before it's too late.

The fact your paying $6.00 a gallon is crazy . I left a restrictive state for one a bit easier on my hobbies and life in general .
Gas is $4.98 in the san francisco bay area
@@dogsense3773 $2.88 for 87 octane here in KY.
Yup, seeing these comments about current gas prices all I can say is YIKES! Gas here in Northeast FL last fillup on 87 octane was $2.87 / gallon, but seeing these CA prices I'm gonna stop complaining about paying almost $4 / gallon for the now widely available ethanol free 89 octane I run in my motorcycles!
@@terrybeavan4264 wages are higher in California, the san francisco bay is higher than most of California so it covers the higher cost
@@terrybeavan4264
It's 3.25 for 87 around here in the 845, but open your wallet to the tune of about 425-450 for 93.
Super is usually running the same cost as diesel around here.
Sad thing is my classic car emission’s are lower than my new car. It’s also better maintained better than most newer cars on the road
I'm in my 50's and that's all I own my whole life is classic car's for my every day driver. I'm old enough to see most of the good fixer uppers disappear. In the 80's I used to watch them get CRUSHED at the wrecking yard it broke my heart watching good classic cars and truck's get crushed and sent to China. Now they want to modern California as China!
"Now they want to modern California as China!"
Wut?
I'd start by contacting your state representative
California is a great place to be...from.
My dad bought a 1966 Ford Mustang brand new it's been through my brothers and sisters and now it's mine. I've lived in California since 1961, I've done so much work to it fixing this car up. Every month I go to Java & jalopies vintage car Meetup. It's been really fun
California has their heads up their butt.
Boycot the state. When someone offers you a load to cali turn it down. When they dont have any product they will wake up. Maybe!
I'm going to start agreeing with you I believe I am not going to be driving into that state even if they offer me $10,000 extra for the load to deliver those goods in that state I believe it should be at least 75% to 80% of the truckers that deliver in that state of California should boycott that state and at the same time too the railroad companies should not call any Freight into that state and then I would guarantee you within 3 months if all goes well Gavin Newsom is now going to realize his so-called largest economy of a state is not going to be that economy anymore so in other words I think it's time to pull the plug out of that state .@@holmes1956O
Most classic European cars want the original engine kept in place. I don’t want to put a modern Engine in my 1967 Porsche 911!
I work in a restoration shop, old cars only ,and not one car this came in with a modern engine this year
@@dogsense3773 I work in a restoration shop too all we do is restore brake caliper for vintage cars
Rumor has it pretty soon farting will be banned in California 😂😂
The place DOES stink. Is a good idea!
Total bull 💩 its about control nothing more they want that gps switch to eventually tell you when and where you can use your vehicle. Till the point its a privilege so only the privilege will get to drive all others use government transportation
I don’t disagree, but by the time it gets that bad I already will have left this place in my rearview.
@@eycchu driving should never be a privilege!!! It's beening challenge in Supreme Court...haven't checked on that in a while. Right to travel with your personal effects.

@@Jefforey You have the right to travel anywhere you want, but as soon as you have to rely on someone to provide you with the road surface on which to drive, you will need to have at least permission from them to use their road surface. For most of us, that's the moment we leave our driveways.
got to get rid of Newsome and the whole bunch of them .
This is why I love living in Ohio, no emissions, praying for you people in california
No checks on cars 76 down
Try Minnesota - NO CHECKS AT ALL. They did at one time, but inconsistency between shops and legislature was its downfall. Yay for us...
Don’t even waste your time praying for a state that is scraping the gutter.
Why don’t they focus on providing funding to develop hydrogen internal combustion engines instead of these mineral-sapping EV bombs.
Classic cars are barely used for heaven’s sake. I bet they contribute less than 1% of emissions.
Exactly!
Vote with your feet. There are plenty of other states who'd love to have you and your classic car(s).
Government goes after the low hanging fruit much easier that way and it makes people think there doing there jobs
You're not allowed to drive a classic car in California but you're allowed to shit on the sidewalk ??? lol Keep voting for people like Gavin.
I can understand your point about modern engine efficiency. Back in the day I couldn't get more than 10 mpg out of a 318 Fury no matter what I did. On your main point, once Sacramento starts on an issue like this, nothing seems to stop them.
I get 19-20 mpgs (City) out of my big, heavy 1969 F250. That’s better than a brand new F150
Sacramento Raceway just shut down for good.
Too many rich people own million dollar classics in CA. Not going anywhere.
Oh no not the “free” state according to Mr hair gel 🤭
I live in Canada and I try to drive my 31 fordmodel a truck as much as I can, in fact I like to think its my daily driver in the summer.
That would suck if the gov would prevent me from driving it.
Im in Ontario & drive a 48 dodge daily, it gets better mpg than my crown vic
They've been at it since 1975.
Next step will be forcing insurance companies to cease coverage. People need to push back.
My name Bill Thompson I would never live in California y'all governor is nuts i would move from there i happy i live in Ga my name Bill Thompson
Remember folks the us constitution grants the right to travel on pubic road ways in your private automobile
I live all things mechanical, but please show me where those words appear in the U.S. Constitution?
When I went to California regular leaded was still available in 1990. There were still a few older cars used as daily drivers.
Very well said brother, 100% agree. Great (and valid) points. Let’s just hope it’s a big bluff and backlash from the majority make the powers to be reverse on their ludicrous plans.
get the hell out, everyone else is. they will never listen to reason, just go while you still can
From what I have read, when they get all the info they need, they want to allow city's to ban then..so anywhere that is "nice" or pleasant to visit, like beach city's, they will allow bands and restrictions..totally BS
War on the car period. They want you on a bicycle in your 15 minute community
Truth
6 dollars a gallon ? I find that hard to believe !
It’s $2.70 here in MN, so in California it’s more than double ?
You can believe it. This is our reality.😂
Move to Florida like I did! We don't have them problems or smog!
Who didn't see this coming?
California is a state of democratic sheep.
I sure hope you Calli folks are able to take back your state . Trumpy 2024 ! 👍
They did it to commercial trucking. Easy for me to say, but ya'll just need to leave the state and let it rot.
Stop the Wildfires 🔥 not the classic cars!
Love classic cars. You are right. You don't see many out there. Plus the worry of vandals damaging them.
They only get driven , like once every two weeks , make a stand get everyone involved, Sema, NHRA , E-magazines , I think emissions from China Russia an India would be more of a concern.
Time to move.
Just sayin . . . . . . .
Commiefornia. They didn't allow those in the Soviet Union either.
This is what Californians voted for.
How about getting UP and BNSF railroad to stop idling locomotives in there yards all night!!
Here’s the problem, You live in California. You couldn’t pay me to live there.
It all starts with the voters.
I was a former classic car owner for many years and am presently part of that "other" group of people that are being attacked by Newsom and Bonta.
One reason to move out of california the land of fruits and nuts
The classic car industry is huge, and the results of the custom car ideas influence all of the major car manufacturers so all of us can enjoy really nice machines to operate in our daily lives.
There are also those of us who can't afford a newer vehicle which include, bank loan payments, high insurance to cover the cost of the new
vehicle should it be in an accident, and now the high cost of registering the car including smog inspections.
Another reason to flee Commifornia.
