Thats what Judges are supposed to be for, to interpret and apply common sense to laws. IMO not only the guy should get his car back, but the state of Kansas should be fully liable for the damages to his vette while in impound.
@@ubroc Wtf does that mean, ‘not if you’re a conservative judge’? Please, spare me your liberal BS!! We just put a judge on the Supreme Court because she was black, NOT because she was the best qualified candidate. She couldn’t even say what a woman is because she ‘isn’t a biologist’!🙄
The so-called cop who is sharpening his teeth on this case should be held solely responsible for the vehicle, seeings he's the one who made the initial decision to impound the car.
Easy to see why the country is so screwed up, no more common sense. Engines are frequently changed, there should be a serial number on the frame, if it matches the Vin tag there should not be a problem. Vin tags are frequently taken off during a restoration. I brought a car to have a Vin verified at the highway patrol a long time ago, they said it was 18436572, Chevy guys will know what that was.
Why should it get donated to a museum?? The ONLY conclusion that a sound mind could possibly draw is that the car is returned to it's rightful owner, and the owner fully compensated for the damages to HIS property, compensated for the legal fees, and compensated for the stress such nauseating, bureaucratic nonsense has undoubtedly caused.
My parent don’t understand why I want to get my dads truck back. It was my favorite vehicle we have owned and i practically lived my entire childhood in it.
At the very least, they should let Mr. Martinez return the car to the state of Illinois and get a refund on the car or sell it outright in the state of Illinois.
There are several sellers of vintage fiberglass Corvette bodies near me and some have frames too. The FBI came and investigated them, because changing identification plates on old Corvette bodies is a popular crime in order to sell ones without titles that aren't cracked, like the ones the ID plates were removed from. A lot of buyers don't know their Corvette bodies are illegally ID'd.
This is just wrong, Blow this up and get this mans car back and 100k. Do it now Kansas! FBI says its legal, what else you need KANSAS?! DIRECT WORD FROM YOUR MAKER? WELL YOU GOT IT!
Wow have a car with a reassigned vin from Missouri put in door jam with regular rivets that were supplied by Missouri. Same as here and was inspected and passed via a decal by Kansas.
This is nuts.. Crush the guys car because the rivets are aftermarket? Really? What if the vin tag was the one that belongs to the car? They may be crushing a car that is legal. This is not America anymore.
Classic Mercedes usually used Phillips screws to hold vin tag to radiator support unless the market required it be riveted which the US doesn’t require.
He got it back due to them changing the law to exempt cars 25 years and older. They gave him 20K for the damages but supposedly that wasn't enough to fix it.
That’s really sad and I feel his pain! People on power don’t really give a penny about the poor and powerless. They only start to care n amending certain laws when they find themselves in the same situation.
Hope he got his car back he doesn't deserve this That corvette to be destroyed that stupid the Car wasn't in a crime those peoples are Moroon that law is stupid. Giving back Ill bet he doesn't sleep worried about Dream car not fair this happened to him
That’s ridiculous, if the customer has all the proofs from the mechanic facility, it should not be impound, the mechanic facility is responsible for it.
Congratulations you got your car back, everyone who benefits from your legal battel owes you graddtude. This fight wasn't just over your car, but the states laws. 30 49 50 60 70 year old cars are only new once, after 10 years some states don't even look at mileage on the odometer, that car was priceless to you. But its not just your car you've saved its everyone after you who will also be great full for your efforts Laws very state to state. And you dont find out your states laws untill it crosses state lines. Taking somones property becuse its in the state isnt legal, you should have the option to sell it and or license it in a different state, if like your car was everything is legally done even changing the rivets legally out of state then its not breaking the states laws they needed to be changed to match other states laws. Auto motors are often changed, so a legally bought motor change dosnt mean the car was stolen. That cars 70 years old it would be a waste and crime to crush it.
Isn't this a clear cut 14th Amendment and 5th Amendment "taking" case? If the state wants to take his car to achieve their dream of a world where Corvettes all have proper rivets, then they have to compensate him for the property taken to achieve that public good.
Went to Mo. DOT with young friend. First ? has thier been any motor, trans, changes. Lifted the VIN tag. big no no here in Mo. Sorry about your luck man. I think Ks. is sendining message loud and clear do not lift tags and then come make it legal so you can sell stolen car. My take on it , or mechanic feels very important.
These are not old rivets they still use these same rosette rivets on GM vehicles today. These rivets are only able to be installed on an older car by the State Troopers in the state the work on the car is being done. When they reinstall the Vin plate back on any restored car it is placed in the driver's side rear part on the front door jam. The question that should be asked is why was this VIN plate removed in the first place? When a VIN plate is removed it has to be done by the State Trooper at their inspection station where the VIN tag is kept in a file until it is ready to be reinstalled to that same car by that State Trooper inspection station. And they will go through every inch of the car from top to bottom before and after removing then reinstalling VIN Tag. This is why most people don't have a VIN Tag replace because of where it must be reinstalled in the drives door jam. It scares people away from buying a car that had this done but it's the Law! The State of Kansas is not wrong on this at all. I do feel bad for this man but he should have brought a Corvette expert with him to do a full inspection on this car chances are the expert would have caught the VIN tag and told him to walk away due to the VIN tag in question. He could have bought another one elsewhere without any issues. Now he's out over 80k. There are only places that have these rosette rivets 1) Auto Manufacturer no Dealers & 2) The State Police in your state only are the ones that can have these heavily-guarded rosette rivets are each one has to be accounted for by the Manufacturer and State Police or someone is in big trouble with the Feds.
Where I live the state police are the ones to approve such things, but they usually refuse to do so. One wealthy guy got a custom car approved somehow, but everybody else I know says the state police don't help and DMV says the police have to be involved, or they won't accept it.
We don't matter. Innocent until proven. They knew that when they checked all the numbers. They are just being tyrannical because they can. Jealousy maybe. Or racist. The man's name was Martinez.
The parts make up a car at the end of the day. They have ways to check. But after 70years lots may of been changed / replaced. It is what it is. Not stolen on the system. Hopefully has a traceable history and pics before restoration
They're saying that the car wasn't stolen when in fact it was. The government stole his car.
This is literal insanity. Give the man his car back. Wtf is wrong with people?! All this over slightly different rivets?!!
agree😤

This is why the American Dream is long Gone. Give the Guy his car Back. Stupid Tyranincal Government.
Can’t they just verify the vin against the second vin on the frame? Classic cars have a secondary vin on the frame near the trunk area.

The cops wanted to buy it from the wrecking yard with a salvage title and I don't think they had actual Vin until the 70s only a production number
