This animation is something else. Peach and Daisy hopping around, Mario's awkward hopping motion, and Luigi's """turning""" animation... was there just no budget left for the intro cutscene or something?
@@kevynvanaalst9529 have you seen mario sunshine? metroid prime? wind waker? luigi's mansion? smash melee? video game animation was leagues ahead of this by 2002. there isn't much of an excuse for this. it's clearly either unfinished or low budget.
My bro told me that when I was young I would replay the intro so many times he said that I loved it so much but when I come to watch it now I don’t remember what I loved about it 😂😂
Came here from TV Tropes, I can't believe this is actually an offical cutscene! Nintendo usually is known for polishing their games and having Pixar-level charm, but these animations and character models for this ram straight into the Uncanny Valley for me! Everyone looks so stiff and moves strangely, them being in a realistic background with their janky movements make things look more unnerving. The only character who doesn't look creepy is Donkey Kong. Good thing the character models are much better in-game! Also, were they just standing and hopping around in the fields like bipedal rabbits the entire time until Toad and the others showed up?
In my opinion, this isn't incredibly shoddy an intro. I mean, it was 2002, so things were obviously different, especially for a Mario spinoff game. Although I might be a little biased, given this is easily my favorite Mario Party game EVER!! One of my very first video game experiences ever and probably my most influential exposure to all things Mario when I was a 4 year old girl. I'll always love this game with all my heart and soul.
@@julianx2rl The sad thing about it is that Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion came out before this, and those games had beautiful cutscenes and quality to them. This is very lackluster in comparison.
Axel A. He's right, Daisy's was voiced by Jen Taylor from Mario Party 3-5. Not only she voiced Daisy, she also did Peach, Toad (like in this game), and Toadette, who are all now voiced by Samantha Kelly, and Daisy is now voiced by Deanna Mustard. You may be familiar with Jen's voice as Cortana in the Halo series.
Everyone's talking about the hilariously bad animation, but can we talk about the location of Peach's Castle real quick? Peach's castle lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, and yet there's no Mushrooms or a Kingdom on site. Just a plain empty field, lmao.
That was also the case for every other depiction of Peach's Castle, but at least with, say, Mario Party 3, there was actual terrain beyond a field of bland trees.

Mario: (skips into the scene) Hey, guys.
Okay, I understand, it’s a weirdly animated cutscene. Everything about it is wrong. Wario can’t close his mouth and is tilting his head like he’s Michael Myers. Donkey Kong looks like he’s getting off in public and nobody notices. Luigi’s lower lip is quivering like he’s looking at the love of his life. Koopa and Goomba are shuffling around like they’re slipping on ice, and Koopa’s arms are outstretched in a vaguely threatening manner. I get all that and I know I won’t get any answers for them beyond “It’s badly animated.” But putting all that aside, I have to ask, who put that tie around Goomba’s neck? What sick bastard put something on there knowing full well the armless mushroom won’t be able to remove by himself when this is all over?
The intro of Mario Party 4 already made me remember that it continues after the events of Mario Party 3, since at the end of the credits of 3 all the characters were happily calm in the castle garden.
It sure looks like it, doesn't it? And the sad thing about it is that Super Mario Sunshine came out before this, and that game had beautiful top-quality cutscenes. Maybe Sunshine had more budget put in for the cutscenes. This is really lazily done.
I think this intro would have been less weird if it used n64 models, cause the animation quality is like the animation they used to have on the n64 games

It's such a bombastic transition, and then it's just the Mario crew jankily doing idle animations as Mario himself awkwardly skips over from halfway across the planet.
The animation may look very aged, but to be fair, this is probably the first Mario game with fully rendered 3D cutscenes ( Super Mario Sunshine was recorded inside the game) At least games like Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, which was released nearly a year later, looked better than this. Then again it was developed by Camelot, not Hudson Soft.
