Jan. 8, 2019---For my mold boxes, I use Lego's which I can make as big or tall as needed. And no problem tearing them apart and reusing them.
I've seen Lego ones leak, not badly though.
@@GaryMcKinnonUFO I'd wager a clear coat would probably prevent that in most cases that the tolerance didn't do the trick. It's not like you're likely to reuse the Lego bricks for play afterwards. I hadn't thought about using them and there's a shop nearby that sells used bricks by the pound.

Rather than cutting the mold wall out of foam core (which I did once), I like to print the outer wall for my molds. Minimizes the amount of silicone I use. Making the wall is particularly easy if you already have the model in CAD software and can just make an outline with a half inch offset from the original part and extrude it up.
That's a good idea. Then, you could probably hold everything together with screws, making your mold wall reusable.
Yep, this is how I make my molds. Works really well for my pen blank molds.
So this is more about making something from a mold. It would be neat to see how to create a 3D printed silicone mold.

Last i checked tc stood for tin cure... Not platinum.
No, TC- stands for Two Component. It's a rather old nomenclature system BJB has used. We also have SC- which is Single Component.

Most CAD softwares have a mold function for your part, which allows you to print molds, pretty cool
that is what i was thinking. do you really need that cardboards? you can print a mold than pour silicone on it. Is there anything i am missing?
Disposable “Tupperware” (or it’s generic equivalents) works nicely as a box too... 😀
Dark Winter i like to use solo cups flip them over and cut the bottom off.
I took a 2D vector image, greyscaled it for the heights I wanted, then too the flat 2D image and used it as a heightmap to extrude a model to print. Printed the model, then used it to create molds for soaps :)
Edit: By the way, for silicone I just used standard hardware store 100% silicone. You make a high concentration solution of dish soap and water, empty the entire tube into the solution, and then knead it gently by hand. It will stiffen up in the solution and then you can press it around your object to be cast. Very handy when you don't live near a place that carries casting supplies or don't want to wait for shipping.

I used hot glue for my 3d print and as soon as it got covered with silicone the thing lifted up and started floating I didn’t go cheap with the hot glue either would superglue be a better option?
I have a business where I do custom concrete and resin pieces. I have a request for an order to put an old photograph in resin on thier piece. This is way out of my league. I have been watching some of your videos and searching like a mad woman on if this is possible. Can you direct me on how I can accomplish this? It will be an heirloom so, quality of detail is of the utmost importance. I appreciate your time and learn a lot from your videos!

Any suggestions on how to keep the silicone pour from absorbing into the FDM print? I used PLA, any settings that are best?
Do the Smooth-On tin or platinum silicones produce any exothermic reaction when curing that may deform an original print (say it is printed in PLA or PETG) ? I know some plasters will heat up during the curing process. I'm concerned it will soften/deform an original print.
Nice job Alec. Looking forward to more of your mold making videos! A quick note, if you want a strong Platinum Silicone with lower viscosity for easier mixing and bubble removal, the TC-5041 is one of our favorite for general mold making. Keep up the good work!

Note: clear coats and spray paints were recommended for use as a mold release. This will often not work with platinum cure silicone. It will inhibit curing and ruin the mold and the part you are trying to make a mold of.
Did you prep your 3d print before molding? If so, what did you do? And how did your 3d print look before the prep. And how was the cast made from the mold?
Aren't resin casting thermosets? They are definitely not better than 3dprintable filaments( in terms of eco friendliness and bio degradability) like pla...

Just something ive recently discovered. If I don't let the 3d print cure for at least 2 or 3 days in natural light it will cause cure inhibition which is where the rubber will not set and stays sticky where it touches the 3d print.

How many times can you use a mold?
What do you do to the 3-d printed object to avoid cure inhibition? My silicone casts are still uncured where they are in contact with the 3-d PLA print.. using smooth-on Moldstar 30 and Dragonskin 20, both not curing on the contact surfaces. Please help. Thanks!. -Dave S.
Food safe silicone?
What you completly missed is cost: resins are relatively to 3d filament very expensive. I estimate your logo cast with smoothcast is about 3-5$ for resin. If you buy the gallons ist 2-4 $. This is about ten times the cost of 3d printing, not counting the even more expensive mold silicone. I think this very point is the reason why FDM printing is so accessable and resin casting isn't .
I have made molds and wax castings from 3d parts for metal casting and just spend the money to be able to have a high tempreture mold because there is no other way to get wax "prints" but for simple shapes like this.... imho way to much effort and money to have some resin parts.
I've used the BJB casting resins and silicone molds. It's actually very cheap if you're making many parts. Plus you can make the parts faster than on a 3d printer, casting doesn't use electricity, and the casting resins are often times stronger than a 3d print.
It depends highly on the quantity you need to make and also the finished quality needed. If your time is worth anything, then after about 6-12 parts making a mold is a time and money saver. If you are only making a few parts, then continue 3D printing. This is typically the key item missed when comparing the techniques.
I'm wondering about where to read/see more about the types of resins that can be used with silicon molds. Do you have more links about that?
probably one of the worst pours i've ever seen. the way you let the material fold onto itself over and over just folding air bubbles into the mix was face palm inducing . whatever!
What I'd the temperature rating for the mold. I cast at about 180 degrees with a platinum. Get about 1500 pieces out of one mold. Do you heat the mold in an oven first ? We do and then it goes into a deep freeze at 10 f for 15 minutes. Try this and get great results
... How can you make a mold of something challenging like a squid.. can a squid or octopus be done with one mold.

A note on food safety, it should be both food safe and platinum cured. From what I can tell, food safe doesn't automatically guarantee that it's going to be platinum cured. For things that just come into contact with food or the outside of the body that might be overkill, but it's worth it.
Can u do this with a 3d printed cookie cutters? Like say u printed a Mario head in 3d printed making it for make cookies but I want to use it for resin keychains instead?

Hi! Is it a bad idea to make the irrigator's part out of a usual (automotive or usual sealant) silicone? It will be contacting with water probably. The water will be filtered.
to minimize air bubble, why pour it higher? you introduce bubble at that height.

Excellent and informative, thanks a lot! Have you tried pouring recycled/melted PETG or PET into a mold? I've read that silicone molds can withstand high temp materials like pewter, so I suspect that's not an issue, but curious as that's my plan.
I like that idea a lot. From what I know it can go up to around 220c before you start to have problems. There are high temp silicone blends that can go closer to 300c if i'm not mistaken.

I have a 3d print out of resin and my 3d printer said platinum silicone won't cure on the resin, is this true? If so how can I make my resin print useable?
I’d love to give this a go but all I ever hear about resins is how toxic they are and how they shouldn’t be used in a home setting. Did you mention safety?
Not all resins are harmful. Epoxy resin is less dangerous than many household cleaners. Urethane (what he used in the video) is likely just a little worse than most household cleaners while acrylic resin is pretty nasty stuff yet it's what fake fingernails are made of and when it's sanded it's harmful dust that many people do in home.
Great video! Regarding the smooth cast 300q that you pour into the cast: is that stuff food safe when it cures or would I need to coat the new part with a food-safe epoxy?
