- When Get Out first hit theaters in 2017, it took the world by storm. Jordan Peele gave us a horror film unlike any we've ever seen before. Get Out was a story filled with social commentary, evil characters, and terrifying sequences like The Sunken Place. When Jordan Peele first crafted Get Out he knew it would change the game, but fans didn't know what to expect. But when Get Out finally hit theaters, and subsequently won an Academy Award one scene specifically stuck in the minds of audiences everywhere.

Totally agree. One of the most underrated actors out there. Maybe he's just more specific on what roles he wants/takes. He crushes everything he does.

He’s a dark skinned black man. Very difficult for him to get roles unless he just wants to play gangsters his entire career. Unfortunately that’s the reality of being a Black actor in this industry. It doesn’t see talent first, it sees looks and aesthetics. (From a Black person)

this movie and scene completely changed my perspective on what a social thriller can be. a comedian directing this type of movie is perfect because humor and horror go so well together. the world can be incredibly scary and absurd, so finding a balance in both of them in life is where true art can be created. i wish hollywood would make movies like this more often and give people like jordan peele a chance to express their experience as a human. i remember being so blown away watching key and peele by how they could twist tragedy into comedy and entertainment and i believe that is why movies like get out are truly special.

When I first watched this was in the theater while being in an interracial relationship. I feel you. This movie hit differently.
I’ve been in an interracial relationship for over 13 years. When we saw this my partner was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Meanwhile, I was screaming in my head “EXACTLY!!”
Same for me. My wife would try to troll me by saying the line “I’d have voted for Obama a third time if I could”.

Get Out is one of my mosft favorite movies of all time in the genre, but I believe Peeel`s other movies and ideas didn`t land as good as Get Out.
I really liked both Us and Nope, but I would agree that Get Out is still his crowning achievement

Great video breakdown and amazing film. Old Boy and Parasite were 2 other films that left me silent in seat haunted
Ths movie has layers upon layers of subtext and symbolism so subtly displayed, that some people still fail to see it and call it "overrated", i remember having a discussion with a youtuber on the comments of his video saying how "Get Out" was so overrated because it played out just like any other horror movie, and he couldn't see how that's the whole point that's the genious of it, you have all this context and nuance wrapped on very familiar movie tropes that it will affect every person in a whole different way.
Completely agree with this take. I guess somethings just go over most people's heads.

The final scene also hits very different. It sums up racism without really doing anything. Such a strong moment.

the best part about that scene was the fact that people thought her eating the cereal seperate from the milk was bc she wanted "the colors and whites separate" and when jordan was told about that he thought it was amazing bc he thought it was just a creepy way to eat cereal- i LOVE unintentional symbolism
One of the best films I've seen it made me realize the worst monsters are humans afterall.

Didnt know this film was made by Peele
The moment another man, "owned"by a white woman, manages to lean forward just a bit and says the single word "Run". It's all he can do.
Our protagonist of course doesn't understand.
But I keep hoping he goes back with whatever it will take to rescue that man too.

It was all so creepy. The scene where the white woman touches his arm and says he’s so strong unlocked a lot of memories of when I was a swimmer when my friends’ moms would do that (and one dad). I didn’t think anything of it when I was that age, but seeing it in the movie almost made me have a panic attack.
What was worse, I was almost hypnotized. The sunken place view was what I started to see before I decided I did not want to “go”. It was weird that he used that “theatre of the mind” view because it was oddly accurate to being “pulled away” by hypnosis. My friend right next to me was hypnotized though and they made him dance like a stripper amongst other things he has no memory of.
It was so terrifying. I really thank god I could pull myself out of it or I would’ve had to stop watching the movie totally. I will not lie, I am one of like two black guys in the neighborhood I live in, and I stopped walking my dogs late out of fear of being abducted and “got out”.
Did not enjoy the movie at all, 10/10 horror film.

This is not even one of Jordan Peeles most terrifying scenes. I think that prize would go to The Star Lasso Experience scene or Gordys Massacre scene in Nope.
There were some truly terrifying scenes in Nope too. That Gordy scene would make for a great breakdown as well.

I could only handle seeing this movie once. It put on display my paranoias and assumption about ultra friendly white people. Because black have been victims of white for half a Millenia, a mistrust and paranoia gets passed down. We expect them to unleash cruelty that when they are being nice it's hard to believe. It's inherited trauma. Much like of a person was repeatedly mistreated by a particular gender, they tend to have a mistrust for that gender no matter what. I have white ancestry but that white ancestry was Irish and Scottish slaves, so the whites in my particular Caribbean culture don't feel threatening to me. Even though I work and make friends with white people for years... I swear when they are being ultra nice it makes me nervous.
Theres alot of ignorance in these comments. And like the film went way over yalls heads. Sigh.

Say what you will, but the noise of the teaspoon annoyed the f*** outta me. Instead of relaxing me, it frustrated me beyond belief. I have misophonia, so it made me want to punch something
I haven't heard anyone else say this, but I also experience misophonia, and the frustration I experience at the thought of hearing that sound while someone very calmly takes away my autonomy fills me with horror and rage beyond almost anything else I can imagine. This scene was so well done. It made me feel emotions that no other horror movie I can think of right now has ever made me feel
I didn't love the movie, it just lost too much realism especially in this scene. Also it's a bit preachy so was kinda blah to me. Think it resonates with Americans more generally than others.

This movie wasn't scary and definitely isn't a horror movie. It had great suspense, atmosphere, and terrific acting. But it wasn't scary at all. It's just a lot of suspense and a decent ride of a movie.

@@Nerdstalgic a lot of my favorites can be pretty gory. Like saw or from dusk til dawn. There's also cheap scares, but still with its mood and tone of scaryness like in paranormal activity. This movie didn't give off that mood of "I'm scared of this." I felt the suspense for sure and the anxious feeling of "what's going to happen next?" But it never gave me that scary feeling of suspense when watching. It was almost an action movie type of feeling of suspense. Like, when is he going to break free and start killing his way out. Which he somewhat did. I can ALMOST get a feeling like with the first "Hostel" movie, but it just fell short of that. Sorry for the long reply. Im not saying it was bad, but a lot of people say how scary this was, and I just felt like when people said the same thing about the babadook. The suspense was there, but this isn't scary at all.
@@NickolasNameolas I just didn't get that horror movie feel from it. It just felt like a lot of suspense. I can't explain it. As I'm talking about this, I can take back my saying it's not a horror movie. But it didn't deliver in the "scary" department.

@@Nerdstalgic it was super obvious what was going to happen and the lead character easily escaped without much happening. It was not thrilling, scary, or funny. It seemed like hollywood was more interested in celebrating the director’s race and not his actual ability.
