  • PS Waverley departed Southampton berth 102 outbound for her home port of Glasgow just before 9am this morning. It was interesting to see her being swung round with the aid of a very long rope one end tied to a bollard on dockside and the other end secured from the bow until she was fully turned round to head outwards then when the crew were ready the dockside workers untied the rope from the bollard and Waverley was then able to be on her way. Waverley was in port from 16th Oct till today her last port of call was Whitstable in Kent.

Beautifully filmed; thanks for the posting of this. I've been considering taking a trip on Waverley for a little while; this video has absolutely sold me. Not only is she ridiculously beautiful, but I am amazed at her turn of speed.

Many thanks for the update Dave, yes I do think she diverted into Southampton because of the bad weather when weather is really bad then sometimes ships do either anchor and shelter off the Isle of Wight or divert into Southampton, but still Waverley is a great old Paddle Steamer and can give many a small ship a run for their money, I like her alot, every time she comes down I have to go and see her.

Thank you for your comment Waverley took about 2 days to arrive back in Glasgow which is a pretty good time for her age.

Pretty impressive that trick of swinging the boat on a line; routine on Waverley, I don't know if other ships do it. As remarked by others, she is indeed actually quite fast (as boats go)!

Thanks for viewing and for the comment, the Cunard ship in the background is the Queen Victoria :)

Trev you are most welcome my friend I just could not resist the temptaion of going to see her depart after all she was due to leave originally about midnight but as you know times for departure always tend to get changed, so when I noticed the early departure I was raring to go lol up early and there. I did wonder how Waverley got swung round as I thought she would be going to swing round in the upper swinging ground but luck had it I had a great view on a grey and gloomy morning.

I guess with a paddle wheeler, you don't have the prop wash washing past a rudder to enhance steerage. Must be a whole different steering strategy, like a sailboat. you need speed through the water before you get any helm response from the rudder.

Great video as I have never seen her in Southampton before but I can't help but wonder is it the Victoria or Elizabeth in the background.

She arrived in Glasgow at around 0400 on the 21st October from Southampton , not bad going for the old girl , she must have averaged 14.5 knots all the way up. She was still ready for the last outing of the season that day. Was it the channel weather that kept her back three days alongside.

Don't get the dock line caught in the propeller...oh wait, paddle wheels. A tug sure would have been nice
