      I've got the 10" Princeton and it is FANTASTIC! I like it better than the 12" version actually. I also have a Vox ac30 handwired head with a matching mojotone 2x12, and a pro jr v1. The Princeton is my favorite. I record it with an sm57 and r121 usually.

      Hi 🙂Thank you for your great videos, Andrew!!! I use a 1965 Gibson skylark GA 5. The model without the tremolo circuit . Great sounding amp. Rhett has some great videos on them. I use a ART Pro MPAII to feed it. I found some 1969 GE 12 AX 7 tubes to replace the stock ones in the ART MPAII . Made a huge difference . That gives me more control of volume and more flavors . From the ART MPAII the signal goes through a Alesis midi verb 4 , then to a JHS 3 series reverb a Ventura vibe pedal and , if I deed some more dirt , a super phat mod overdrive pedal as well. I mic the Skylark with a SM 57 . The SM 57 is ran through the second channel of the ART Pro MPAII and on to the audio interface .
      Thanks again for the great videos.

    Great amp! I got mine from Sweetwater (shoutout, Matt Kreager!) in 2017 and fell in love right away with the beautiful cleans, easy breakup, and reverb. Apart from my JP Henry custom (which is naturally on another level entirely), it's my favorite amp. Great with pedals, great with the Ox Box, great micced up.

    I've had this this amp for a couple of years now, for use at home, mostly playing jazz, and I love it 😊 It's the only amp I need or want for electric guitar Although it is a special edition, It is available in Canada also through Long & McQuade.

      I love to play my '78 Champ with it's new Weber. I put a green bullet mic in the back and send it into a Dual Showman Reverb. Sounds like a 100w Champ! Also, if you replace the 12ax7 with a 12at7, you get considerably more headroom (at the expense of the built-in Champ fuzz).

    I’ve had this amp on my Sweetwater wish list for years now. I used to have a ‘66 vintage black face super reverb and I’ve always wanted a quieter version of it. This may be the exact thing I need to be in my home recording set up. Mostly edge of breakup.

  • @GuyNarnarian
    @GuyNarnarian Год назад +2

    I have the "Bordeaux" version which is just blood red with a 12" Jensen Alnico (PQ12). I love it for the cleans, great pedal platform, etc. But without an Ox Box or attenuation of some sort, it gets loud in the room at 6. Mine doesn't really break up until 7 or 8. So I either use pedals for dirt, or a long cable and just crank it with the door closed in my office. Basically my point is the amp is pretty loud. I doubt it would work without being mic'd up at a small venue with a drummer, but don't expect it to be cranked to 10 and be able to sit right next to it and have a conversation, that's not happening. At least not with mine.

    We need a tweed and black face head with matching cabinet. They haven’t released anything full size like that for guitars in probably over a decade. They have the super sonic but that’s more of a lower end (even if the price doesn’t necessarily agree) amp. We need a fender custom shop tweed reverb style head at 100-150w with a matching 2x12, 4x12, and maybe even some weird speaker configurations like 1x15 or 4x10. It’s always been my dream to own a fender stack, but I don’t really want a bass amp and I don’t want an amp and I don’t want to deal with vintage stuff. Nor do I want a marshal clone like their old fm stacks. I want a real reverb style half stack in tweed. Hand wired. Custom shop. Plug in a 1972 thinline tele with dual humbuckers and go to town. My dream fender setup. Unless they finally released a hardtail strat with hss or hsh. Or even make a Tom delong inspired 69 hardtail with single humbucker, but more traditional rather than an invader and single volume.
    Dang it I started rambling again. Freaking gas.

But now I love playing the Tweed Prinston (C.R) and the Tweed Delux (hand wired) in stereo through a Twin City ABY. Now THAT is pure heaven.

    I just got the one with the Celestion speaker. It’s one of the best sounding amps I’ve had. The reverb and Tremelo is very similar to the older silver face fenders. The first good amp I got was a 68 Princeton when I was 12, my dad got it at Sam Ash on kings Highway in Brooklyn, so I’ve always had a thing for this amp. I never liked the 10 inch speaker though. I’ve had four Deluxe Reverb Reissues over the past 15 years but wound up getting rid of them cause I just didn’t like how they sounded, but this Princeton is just right. I don’t think you can go wrong with it.

    I bought this amp from Long & McQuade in Toronto, who said it was exclusive to them. 🙂 I love it. It's my main rehearsal amp, although I haven't gigged it yet. For recording and home practice, I use a Peavey Classic 20 mini head and matching 12" cab. I run it in 1 watt mode and can get it to the edge of breakup without pissing everyone off. I record it using an e906 hanging in front of the grill cloth.

    I play a fat 50’s strat through a 1975 Princeton. It’s the best setup I have. I’m convinced it has to do with the aged speaker wear and the signal size of the ‘fat’ pickups.

    More than any other amp I’ve used, the Volume control on the PRRI is a tone control.
    Meaning, the sound is completely different depending on where you set it, and small changes make big differences.
    You don’t set the volume control on the PRRI for the volume you need-you set it for the sound you want, and if it needs to be louder, you mike it. If it needs to be quieter, get an Ox Box.
    At least that’s my experience.

  • @thata6guy496

    I bought this one from Sweetwater way back when they were sub 1000 dollars. It's a fantastic amp, but I do have my reservations about the C Rex speaker. Some times it can feel a little muffled, or maybe it's just where the mid range sits. I still have this Princeton, but I got my hands on Mesa Cali Tweed 4x40 for a ridiculously good price, and it puts the Princeton to shame. I got the Cali Tweed 40 before the 20 watt was released, but I bet in a showdown of the 20 watt Cali Tweed and this Princeton the Cali Tweed would come out on top. I know with current pricing they aren't on the same spectrum, but at one time they were close. I only paid about 1500 shipped for my Cali Tweed, but those days are long gone.

    I am so glad I took a chance on this amp three years ago because of the user reviews on Sweetwater -- 5 stars and about 140 reviews at the time, now up over 250 and still at 5 stars. It runs so quiet that I legitimately thought mine was dead on arrival when I first turned it on. Takes pedals like a dream, especially low-to-mid gain transparent overdrives like the Timmy and the Lightspeed. I will always cherish my 1968 Super Reverb, but how often do any of us get an opportunity to play at that kind of volume these days?

    I have one of those. It's great, at least until you crank it up and use strong pickups. It can get quite flubby at high volumes. I suspect it's the speaker, so I just ordered a couple to try: a Weber Chicago and a WGS G12C/S. Will report back...maybe.😁 I'm also upgrading the output transformer to a Mercury Magnetics that has both 8 and 16-ohm taps, for more speaker options. AND, installing a mod package from Fromel Electronics. I'll also be running all of my amps through a Fryette PS-2A, so I'll have good tone at virtually any volume...if the PS ever gets here (they build them to order).
    Mine takes dirt pedals very well too. Mostly, I use a Wampler Euphoria.

    Great amp.....when it's working. Also check for the laser added tone between the F# and G# on the high E above the 12th. Fender said it was "within spec" but if you're doing clean jazz or country it absolutely won't work. Had the amp in for repair half a dozen times in the first two years. Finally had my tech basically rebuild the insides and it's been holding up for over a year(and the "within spec" laser went away). Amp never leaves the studio so it's not like it's abused.

What solution are you using to do serious mixing / mastering to make sure those drums are not creating weird resonance in the room that is interfering with your room /reverb sound that you thought you were hearing because I am definitely hearing a difference with just entry level "pro" monitors. I can take down the cymbals and shove them in the bag for an intensive mix session and that really makes a world of clarity....Do you throw a big quick blanket on top of the drum kit or what? Mix with it wide open?

    The problem with modern Fender amps is they sound nothing like the original amps they’re based on, and they use the cheapest components Fender can get their hands on.
    You’re better off finding a boutique builder who can build clones that are much closer to the originals we all know and love.

    I have a late 70s Vibrolux Reverb. Thinking about trading or selling for a 65 Princeton reissue or similar to have a more reliable amp. The amp needs some work.
    Does this seem foolish? I'm new to electric guitars and got the amp for free.

    • @charlesbolton8471
      @charlesbolton8471 6 месяцев назад

      Honestly, yes it does seem a little foolish. The Vibrolux Reverb is (in my opinion) one of the best amps Fender has ever made. Any Fender tube amp from the early 80s back is going to hand wired the old fashioned way, which means they will always be repairable.
      That being said, I do understand the need for a reliable amp if for no other reason than peace of mind, and the modern Fender Reissues (especially the American made ones) have proven themselves to pretty reliable. I would still keep the Vibrolux Reverb even if you decide to get a newer amp.

    Princeton amps sound good for punchy lead tones and studio recordings but for rhythm playing they lack warmth, body, and fullness. I even played one side by side against a cheap Peavey classic 30 for hours and was shocked how much fuller the Peavey sounded in comparison... it's like all the right frequencies were missing from the Princeton. However, again they sound good for lead playing, crisp overdrive tones and some other things... but I don't think they are a very versatile amp... and significantly overrated... but still good. Would I buy one... well probably not...too thin sounding... though I do like them somewhat. I guess it depends on playing style too... certain amps for different playing styles better. Princeton s are great finger picking amps... but can sound too bright, thin, and sterile when using a pick... just like a deluxe reverb...

  • @silverwings1843
    @silverwings1843 10 месяцев назад +1

    Hilarious: The Princeton was no more than a student amp in the 60s that had trem and reverb. A step up from the Champ. It made its way
    to the studio players that craved mobility. It was accepted by the sound engineers only because it was relatively buzz quiet and could be
    mixed to sound full. Its a testament to salesmanship and FAD!! Can never stand with a Deluxe, Pro or Super!!! But can be carried easily!!

    • @hootowl6354
      @hootowl6354 8 месяцев назад

      They designed the Princeton so it wouldn't compete with those amps. It's quite easy to upgrade them to where they do compete. Run it through a 50-watt or 100-watt Power Station and it blows them away.

      @@dahliafiend Princeton and Deluxe are both the same circuit up until the phase inverter. So, the preamp is the same. The biggest difference in the two amps is wattage, speaker type, and cab size. The big advantage of the Princeton is its small size. I have a 12-inch 65 reissue and it is still easy to transport. Nice amp.

    Ok, so nice studio, some nice playing, but (always a but eh?) other than a bit of talking generally about the amp, and showing some players adjusting settings (which not shown) then adding pedals and the variants in sound, not really a 'review' of just the amp is it? but hey, I have one and love it, thanks for sharing....
