My older sister bought a beautiful prom dress for $40 at Loehmans. 5 years later when it was my prom, I had the dress altered for $25 to fit me as I am much shorter. My mom still brags that she only spent $65 for both of us to have a prom dress, mom is 70 and my sister and are are 40 and 45 😂. The shoes were from my closet. My sister did my hair. The jewelry was left over from my cousins wedding. And I paid for my share of the limo and hotel room because I worked my senior year. And the BEST part: my prom date is now my husband of 15 years. We started dating at 17 and 18 years old. We are now 40 and 41❤

I live in the Deep South & come from what is called an "old family". Basically, it means my ancestors were here before the American Revolution, were once rich, but now we're broke. My grandmother was obsessed with me being a debutante. I was the youngest grandchild & I guess that's why she wanted it so bad. My aunts were debs, but only a few of my cousins were. I love my grandma, but it was definitely not my thing, so I talked her out of it. So glad I did.
You were a young woman of full self determination, obviously! I'm not at all surprised to find the whole Deb thing is still alive and well in today's US deep South. The 'Source Debs' themselves took your tack in increasing numbers during the 40/50's. Just wasn't their thing, what with the 60's coming and all! 😉
U sorta confirmed my cursed bloodline theory. We are the curse breaking generations. Our generation and prior to us paid for our families debts. Now it's up to us to raise our family up better e🎉❤
I love your videos! My husband's friend has a daughter named Bailey (her mother was also a fan) but unfortunately she passed shortly after due to developing ALS. It makes Mike happy to watch your videos since it reminds him of his wife.
I have a suggestion for future Dark History: the dark history of tunnels. (Subway tunnels in NYC, tunnels under Vegas, tunnels under Denver airport, etc).
I'm a lifetime thrifter and the amount of formal dresses I see at the thrift store is sad. Some still have tags and they come in all sizes. I do history bounding so I buy them to do slice and dices, and sometimes dye them.
Thrift is PERFECT for that!! I’m not nearly as fancy as you but I will straight up take some bed sheets or curtains from goodwill and use them as fabric to make other things! But I think it’s great that there are so many formals at thrift stores. Then parents or teens don’t have to spend exorbitant amounts for a fancy school dance.
I remember hearing a story about girls in this small Alberta town high school who would fly to PARIS to get their prom dresses (oil money, sheesh) and the school had to put a cap on how much anyone could spend because it got so competitive! I also didn’t go to my prom (small town HS) because I was still the new kid and didn’t really know anyone, but I found out after the dinner they corralled everyone into a field and they drank and danced and stuff in the dark IN A FIELD 😅
Love this story. When I went to prom I spent 0 😂 I wore a pair of flip flops little denim skirt and tank top. Was the most comfortable one there!! Didn’t pay for ticket as wasn’t meant to go in was just meant to see friends go in but teachers wouldn’t let me miss it. Love listening to you as I struggle to read but learn so much throw listening.
In Australia, when I was in high school in 2013, about year 9, we also do a debutante. It about 16 years old. We spend weeks learning a dances with male partner. Buy a dress that looks a lot like a wedding dress but cheaper. Then all our family and friends are invited. We get presented as well. Walk down the these steps and a host reads out what we want to do with our life. Then we dance a few dances. Have dinner and dance some more. Then in the last two years on high school. We have the Australian equivalent to prom called formal. We dress up formally, get our hair and make up done. No rehearsed dances this time. Just a DJ and dinner and school awards and dancing.
My senior prom: I was the only girl to wear a ball gown, all the others wore cocktail dresses. With that in mind, I wore just socks on my feet, no heels or shoes.. my hair was done at a salon for like $50 and my makeup was done at a kiosk in the mall 😂 wore gloves that went halfway up my triceps to compliment it being a strapless dress. My mother bought the dress on Facebook for $100 and decided to resell it after the event.. (as well as my graduating cap and gown 😅… ) my date was a junior but he didn’t want to dance so I danced with my friends. And had to be home before midnight. I missed out on a lot of experiences.. never went to a high school party. The only other dances I was allowed to go to were for end of 5th grade and junior year homecoming (we lost the game) 😂
Our Protestant church had a coming out ceremony for young girls dressing up in white dresses. The practice was brought over from Germany. My dad was also in a Tom Thumb wedding when he was very young marrying each other. The best thing I remember was playing dress up with my mom's prom dress from the fifties.
i just love dark history!! I always have your DH playlist running on our tv. I’ve seen every episode atleast 5 times & i can’t get enough!! thank you bailey ily🖤
I was homeschooled so I've never gone to a dance, I've sometimes envied getting all dressed up but I got to do that at my wedding lol so it's okay. The history behind it is wild though, thanks for sharing it and diving into the nitty gritty of these kinds of stories!
In 2002, my high school had a "male" Prom Queen. She won almost unanimously, and all the males running for King said they were cool with her running and would be willing to dance the King & Queen dance with her, but the school put their foot down on that. So, Trans prom queen but no court dance. It's still an amazing win for her. Extra- she slayed with her dress, looked better than a lot of the girls in our class. I definitely feel she looked better than me.
My prom was a magical night for me. I got together with my high school sweet heart now fiancé that night. My family didn’t have a lot of money to throw me a quinceañera when I was 15, so for prom they pulled together money to buy me a beautiful quinceañera dress to wear. I felt like a princess riding in a limo to the dance! So interesting to learn the history of prom after experiencing it years ago. Thank you Bailey!
laredo!!! i live in Nuevo laredo (litterally just accross the river) and the festivities around the ball last two weeks. They celebrate George Washignton's bday and there are parades, contests, exhibitions, air shows and so many more activities.
1970s teen heartthrob Robby Benson (Ode to Billy Joe) had a cow heart for 15 years before he got a human one!!! He’s still alive & kicking (& still handsome asf) today! FACTS! 💯 ✌🏼
In Canada, our end of high school dance is called grad (for graduation; weird how we also shorten from the original word). I paid about $10 for my dress at a thrift store, and wore my mom's heels from when she got married to my dad.
I watched queen charlotte on Netflix - king George was a mad king & she loved him so much her kids didn’t even see her as mother - & I believe she had 15 of them
Greetings, lovely Bailey. Your recent story evoked memories of Quinceañeras and the myriad transformations they have undergone through the years. It also brought to mind the misconceptions held by those unfamiliar with this rich cultural tradition. Would you consider producing an episode dedicated to the Quinceañera, shedding light on its significance and evolution?
This totally applies to the next episode but my grandfather suffered from 7 heart attacks before he received a pig heart transplant. He made many jokes about not eating bacon because it could be one of his new relatives 😭
Found out I need colonoscopy done, then, I had passed out in Dollar Tree yesterday, heart stopped and all. Next thing I knew I was cleaning my mess up and having to go back for refunds for being double charged. So, I gotta do that this morning after Fortnite.
I am from the town with Boylan High school. The funny thing is Homeschool prom in our area has even more rules for the dresses. You can't go strapless, thin straps, belly showing and more. In Illinois outside of Chicago, the more inti the country you get, its pretty conservative. We also have something called Rebecca's Closet where you can get free formal dresses that have been donated.
I had a beautiful quinceañera which my parents sacrificed for years to be able to financially be able to host it. It's one of my most beautiful memories. I was surrounded by family and friends and felt loved and cherished. And yes, I was born in Laredo, Texas and yes, that's very true on the costs.
My favorite thing you do Bailey: that little giggle and then you say it’s not funny but you know you get it lol it’s the funniest most disturbing most relatable thing ever
I can't remember how much i spent on my formal outfit, but i got this purple dress that made me feel like Disney Rapunzel, high heels i had to take off five minutes in, a bag and a pearl necklace. Also had my hair and makeup professionally done. My friends and i all put $50 towards a limo and we went together.
I haven't seen Suzy Q in so long but it was absolutely one of my favorites! I'm so happy to hear you remember it too because when I mention it people usually look at me like I'm having a Mandela effect moment. 😅
My country doesn’t have prom. Most countries didn’t until recently and they decided to Americanise it because of movies it was just an American thing not a teenage thing do no not really a major teenage experience
I'm sorry you never were able to experience going to prom. I went to prom (in 1991) with a guy not from my high school (no one wanted to go with me bc I was considered a 'nerd' and NOT popular at all!), and this guy who was my cousin's friend, ended up leaving with another girl (who was a cheerleader and VERY popular). I think I'd rather have not gone to prom instead of being humiliated by being 'dumped' by the guy I went with. Maybe it's perspective?
I went to prom but never had an actual date to it. I took myself my friends all had dates kinda sad about it but I made the most out of it . Dancing with my friends was great.
Hi bailey! I was wondering if you haven't already done it, could you do an episode on consumerism/inflation? I'm sure there's a lot of shady government cover-up to reveal.
At old proms, they promenaded into the ball room in front of parents. Each couple was announced as the son of blank and the daughter of blank. It sounded very much like 4H cattle show when the pedigree of the cattle is read off as it is shown.
I always got second hand dresses for my school dances and a family friend tailored them for me. My prom dress was free and it was an awesome gold dress with a corset top. I looked great without spending much
My Junior Prom was radical! Most of my friends had already graduated, were too young to go or were from different schools. Tickets were ridiculous, and not everyone could go... Instead, we wore our dresses/suits and went black light laser tagging instead! My dress was white and I got the lowest score 😂 But I had the best night ever! Went to the mall and to tacobell in a car full of crinolines and glitter! Saved so much money and had the best time! Next year I went to Senior prom when the economy was bad in 2010. No one could afford it and everyone had already dropped out to get a job or moved away. It was so boring. Proms should be more fun! I didn't pay that much to stand there and look pretty.
I went to the IL school mentioned about the PowerPoint and I remember when we all saw that. People were shocked, the teacher who made it also ended up leaving our school shortly after.
In Racine, Wi, senior prom is held our festival hall, downtown. I was kicked out of highschool when i was a sophomore so i didn't have the opportunity to attend prom. BUT, the whole point of this comment is to talk about how big a production it is. I *think everyone starts at their respective school (when i was in school there were like 6-7 schools that participated) then make their way downtown. Every year the prom "parade" is televised live (with multiple camer setups) and shows what wild or opulent transportation everyone arrives and the red carpet so the students can show off their looks for the evening. I haven't lived in Racine for years but i heard its still done this way. I used to love watching it every year ❤
I learned in a psychology class that low income people tend to splurge on certain “unnecessary” things (like an expensive prom dress) because it brings happiness and momentary reprieve to a difficult situation.
21:00 the idea of them checking for virginity does seem hilarious. Until you realise that in certain parts of history a doctor would have been brought in to do a physical examination of the girls internal genital area.
Love the opening with Susie Q. My last name is the same and I loved this movie but not going to lie, still panicked every bridge due to this movie lol. Thanks for the nostalgia!
As someone who came from a lower income family, p[rom ends up being more expensive for us because we don't have as much as the more well off families. We had to buy brand new jewelry that was fancy enough to match our dresses, I paid for someone to do my hair and make up (because I didn't have the tools or know-how to do it myself), I also had to buy new shoes. Most of my friends did their own hair and make up since they had the stuff already. Thankfully I was able to get my dress and shoes for pretty cheap and my mom paid for my hair to get done.
The Wallis Simpson/King Edward story is pretty fascinating. The common story is that they fell in love, but a few podcasts have brought to light letters & interactions that occurred between her ex, Simpson, would lend credence to the idea that she was essentially stalked & forced to marry Edward & then she could never get out of the marriage. It is a sad story.
I lucked out with my prom. My sister got married a week before & I was in the wedding party so I wore my bridesmaid dress to prom (it was a very pretty dress). Plus a friend of my dad drove a limo so I had a free limo too. The only things I spent money on were my hair, a purse & a pair of gloves I wore.
Girl you are amazing, I spent my mornings listening to you while working on my paintings and I just want to say I have learned so much and thank you . Much love from jordan 🇯🇴
Covid made me miss my sophomore and junior prom, but my senior prom I wore a black leather dress and went with my long-distance girlfriend. We had the most awkward dinner date and they were pretty standoffish and rude to my friends. This was later revealed to be because they started feeling really sick, so we ended up leaving early and I stayed with them instead of going to after-prom with my friends. We broke up a couple weeks later and I still regret it :,(
My sister worked for a radio station at the time I went to prom. So they were hosting a princess of the ball or something event where you could get free stuff for prom. So I got a dress, corsage, shoes a bracelet. All for free all we had to do was altar it. This was back in 2014. My hair and makeup was done so that was all that was spent. My dad drove us and then we went to Denny’s after with a bunch of other friends. Oh my ticket was free too because I was on senior council. We were in charge of prom and the senior trip and all those sorts of events.
I was a debutante for one of the African American debutantes for Mardi Gras! It was really nice being able to eat at places like the restaurant that inspired princess and the frog, a second line party on a boat and more. Hated having to practice the bowing and dance routines
In 2002, I spent $400 on a dress, $50 on hair, $50 on nails, and probably $50 on shoes. Tickets were $100, and I contributed to a limo for a group of us. So it was under $1000. I’m sure people spend much more these days, but those who do it on the cheap have just as great a time- at the end of the day, they’re all at the same party.
That Catholic school prom dress presentation was basically a shorter version of my high school's dress code. The dean of students went around with a ruler to measure skirts and had a closet of plain clothes for people to wear when they were found to be wearing something inappropriate. However, the biggest "controversy" wasn't hems and necklines, it was about sweatpants. We had a decent athletic program, so of course folks showed up in gym shorts and sweats. The code kept getting amended until there were probably 2-3 paragraphs just about sweatpants... It's been years, so hopefully the dress code has relaxed since then.
I thought the opening story was Beetlejuice.... Now that I've watched the whole video, I have to agree about prom. I went because I was "supposed to", but I remember not really wanting to go. My friends and I mostly sat outside the prom talking because we were the nerdy crowd. We went to our local diner after. It was kind of fun, but I'm glad I didn't spend an outrageous amount of money. I was so excited to watch this episode when I saw it because I read a book featuring debutantes a year or so ago. It was fun to learn their origin story!
I would always buy my dress off the clearance rack. I think the most expensive one I bought was $200. But I used to sing in a summer performance so we would always use my prom dress. Double win. Also my mom is a kidney transplant nurse so I can't wait to tell her about the next episode!
Tell me why I was obsessed with showing my daughters this movie last week!!! Finally found it on RUclips horrible quality but still watched 😉 I loved this movie as a kid ❤
When I went to prom I wore I black wedding dress. My mom made it and I loved it. My daughter got married in a black wedding dress and I loved that she had a little piece of me.
This reminds me of my Quinceañera especially when it was my entrance. The MC said my parents were presenting me to society, and as a woman so you could imagine how my 15 year old felt.
Everyone is talking about queen charlotte and brodgington but Cinderella is a CLASSIC example of a debutant ball I mean that’s literally the main event of the whole movie she wanted to go to the ball for the prince
I went to 3 proms. Freshman, junior and senior year. I spent less than 50$ on first dress and I wore my second dress twice which probably was around 50. I did graduate in 98. I did my own makeup. My junior year I helped with Special Olympics and my cheeks were a little burnt. Still friends with the family of my buddy
For my senior prom, my mom went to JCPenney and got a cheap dress and then cut it and added tool underneath. Very 2008 emo I know. I wore hit top chuck taylors that I already had and my mom did my hair and makeup. I wore black biker shorts underneath because ya girl went HAM!! Maybe spent $30 on everything. It was awesome!!

(Subway tunnels in NYC, tunnels under Vegas, tunnels under Denver airport, etc).
...is there really that much history in tunnels?
I'm a lifetime thrifter and the amount of formal dresses I see at the thrift store is sad. Some still have tags and they come in all sizes. I do history bounding so I buy them to do slice and dices, and sometimes dye them.
What's history bounding?
Just curious to know whatcha do with the dresses!
I suggest an episode on the dark history of insurance. I mean we all are required to have it on our cars for health. Why are we paying so much in
Insurance was created by fear mongering pigs
Joan ate it up with that pageant fit 💅👑
Mhm, Saint.
Our Protestant church had a coming out ceremony for young girls dressing up in white dresses. The practice was brought over from Germany. My dad was also in a Tom Thumb wedding when he was very young marrying each other. The best thing I remember was playing dress up with my mom's prom dress from the fifties.
The upper classes had the best reputations, but many of the men were keeping child brothels running.
🤮
i just love dark history!!
Dark version of Bridgerton!! I love it! Hey Bailey you should do an episode of the dark history of flat Earth 😮 🗺️
As a teacher who escorts, I always shop the end of the prom season, June, where dress $$ is 75% off plus
I used to be Obsesseddd with Susie Q, finally someone else that remembers!!🥲♥️
0h yes a lot of fun. I'm from Laredo. The city also has the Pocahontas pageant where the girls and young men dress as Native Americans
Susie Q was my FAVORITE movie! So many have never heard of it. I was obsessed lol
Every time she said Chamberlain, I got flashbacks to The Dark Crystal 😂
I thought u were going to say your quinceanera lol 😅
Hi, Bailey! Love the variety of topics you cover in Dark History. Continued successes!!!
My promise was 2020, so I didn't even bother with a formal zoom call🤣
Thank you Bailey for telling the WHOLE INCLUSIVE history of prom. More historians need to acknowledge the various factions that make up our society.
I just love you Bailey ❤I'm watching all the way from South Africa and our proms are called Matric dance💃
1:04 the movie that forever made me afraid of driving off the side of a bridge
Me too
@@SolielB and I saw that movie wayyyy too young lol, time to find it and rewatch
Right!!!!
That and Beetlejuice
I had a beautiful quinceañera which my parents sacrificed for years to be able to financially be able to host it. It's one of my most beautiful memories. I was surrounded by family and friends and felt loved and cherished. And yes, I was born in Laredo, Texas and yes, that's very true on the costs.
I love that prom is a short for promenad but that is the word for taking a walk in Swedish. Love you
My favorite thing you do Bailey: that little giggle and then you say it’s not funny but you know you get it lol it’s the funniest most disturbing most relatable thing ever
love you so much bailey!! Thank you for all the knowledge, much love from Norway!
Hey. My hometown made Dark History. Way to go Boylan. 😂😂😂
when you started explaining debutant parties i immediately thought of bridgerton, like it snapped right into my mind instantly
I skipped my senior year prom to go to an open bar wedding :)
🤣🤣🤣Priorities FTW 😈
@@tracycarson8589 exactly! it’s just simple math 🤷🏻♂️
I haven't seen Suzy Q in so long but it was absolutely one of my favorites! I'm so happy to hear you remember it too because when I mention it people usually look at me like I'm having a Mandela effect moment. 😅
I never got asked to prom, and I’m weirdly still sad about it-12 years later! I feel like I missed out on a major teenage experience.
I was never asked to prom but I still went with my girl friends . Couldn’t care less what others thought we still had a time
Girl you didn't. You avoided making your parents waste $1k for an experience with people who didn't even care about you. 🤷🏽♀️
I went to prom but never had an actual date to it. I took myself my friends all had dates kinda sad about it but I made the most out of it . Dancing with my friends was great.
The way I paused at 2:33min to make a drink and come back… 👌🏼 it’ll be a pleasure playing this game Bailey
Absolutely loved the movie Susie-Q... core memory unlocked!
I was a debutant and it was so much fun! Thank you for breaking down the history about it. Have no idea!
They still have a debutante ball in Central City, CO. It's called the Yellow Rose Ball and is held at the Teller House Hotel/Opera House garden...
Gone with the Wind also came out as 2 VHS tapes. My folks got it in 1984.
25:28 there IS a movie on Wallace and her marriage!! It’s called “WE” directed by Madonna! Check it out it’s a wonderful movie
I'm trying to keep track of my water intake, so took a sip of water instead of liquor 😂😂
Bailey is always looking flawless🫂
I lucked out with my prom. My sister got married a week before & I was in the wedding party so I wore my bridesmaid dress to prom (it was a very pretty dress). Plus a friend of my dad drove a limo so I had a free limo too. The only things I spent money on were my hair, a purse & a pair of gloves I wore.
Girl you are amazing, I spent my mornings listening to you while working on my paintings and I just want to say I have learned so much and thank you . Much love from jordan 🇯🇴
0:12 I was like I know exactly what movie this is lol 😅
Covid made me miss my sophomore and junior prom, but my senior prom I wore a black leather dress and went with my long-distance girlfriend. We had the most awkward dinner date and they were pretty standoffish and rude to my friends. This was later revealed to be because they started feeling really sick, so we ended up leaving early and I stayed with them instead of going to after-prom with my friends. We broke up a couple weeks later and I still regret it :,(
Should slept on the floor at your friend's instead.
*should've *
My sister worked for a radio station at the time I went to prom. So they were hosting a princess of the ball or something event where you could get free stuff for prom. So I got a dress, corsage, shoes a bracelet. All for free all we had to do was altar it. This was back in 2014. My hair and makeup was done so that was all that was spent. My dad drove us and then we went to Denny’s after with a bunch of other friends. Oh my ticket was free too because I was on senior council. We were in charge of prom and the senior trip and all those sorts of events.
My hometown had segregated proms into the 2000s, too. Lifetime made a movie, oddly enough called "For One Night", starring Raven Symoné.
Great show Bailey. You make learning History fun!!!💯♥️💯
I’m sure people spend much more these days, but those who do it on the cheap have just as great a time- at the end of the day, they’re all at the same party.
please do an episode about princess alice, she was the deaf mother in law of queen elizabeth and she has amazing story!
I love that you opened with Susie Q! I grew up with that movie.
My grandmother made my prom dress. My uncle had a limousine and my cousin drove me, prom date and my friends around.
Oh man...Susie Q. What a blast from the past. I remember the premiere for that movie.
My daughter got married in a black wedding dress and I loved that she had a little piece of me.
i love everything about these episodes
I didn't spend a dime on my Sr prom dress. I wore my Mom's formal when she was 18 & had a blast doing so. Made me proud 🦚
I was obsessed with Suzy Q when I was a kid too. Back when Disney Channel movies SLAPPED🫶🏻
King who resigned for the woman he loved - would suggest a movie ,, The King's Speech” ❤ It was even higher stakes and I love the actor’s portraying them ❤
