The mom deserves jail time for neglect. There is no way she did not know, at the very least, that something was off. Even if she was undergoing abuse, that is her child. A mother's job is to protect your child and she failed beyond belief.
I agree! Allowing him to go down there for several hours a day for DECADES and never once questioning what he was doing or what he was working on?!? And never once trying to go down there herself to see what he had been working on?!? 🤨 And seeing the grandma being locked away against her will wasn’t already a red flag?!? Then her “missing” child’s children magically show up on her doorstep, and she doesn’t question that either? Even if she’s dumb, she’s still negligent af!

They can’t. The women who can, who are fully human, who would never allow it, don’t need to be told. The ones who would allow it even for one second aren’t fully human. They’re not all there. They’re derangedly desperate for men. And no telling them will ever convince them. They’ll even agree with you, in theory. But in practice, no matter what any man does to their daughter, they will take the man’s side. That’s just how monstrous gashes are.
I LOVE that the community is protecting Elizabeth and her family. That is what should happen when a tragedy like this happens. Also who in the world would want to buy that house? It should have been demolished. Bailey, loved how detailed this was!
I remember when the news broke about this horrific ordeal - and it's true, the story sticks with you forever. I think about Elizabeth and her children every now and again - and I hope they are doing well. I'm happy that they never leaked any pictures of her or her children after they were released. She deserves peace and privacy. I am also happy to know that there is a whole community around her protecting her privacy. I wish for her to have the best life and live happily. As for Joseph, I never think about him - let him sit in prison and be forgotten.
Exactly. I couldn’t agree with your comment more. Some people have memories reserved for monsters alone, but many of us devote our thoughts to wishing the best for their victims. The best thing we can personally do to help with their healing is probably to respect their privacy.
24 years!!!!😢 Like when you said that my immediate thought was- like what if her dad died😮 she would have died down there because nobody knew she was down there
That was my first thought too! Then I was like, her and her poor kids would have just thought he was punishing them and wouldn't have risked escaping incase he was upstairs. Glad they're now out and I hope they're coping ok.
What amazes me the most is the strength elizabeth had to survive. She has the shear strength to make it not 1 day or week or year, but 24 and raise her children with love and dignity. It was truly an amazing feat to learn about the strength of a woman
I will never get over the fact that she was his actual biological child, like this story is worst than nightmares it really gives you trauma and we are only hearing it, we didn’t experience any of it. Just AWFUL
@@marif2993 I don’t buy that he kept his mother locked up .. police say he told them that I guess shortly at his arrest.of this crime .of his daughter although he didn’t say how long thf police made an estimate of up to 20yrs. But it doesn’t add up. Maybe a few months before her death bc she was ailing ….
There is no way he ever planned to release her, unless he had a plan to continue the abuse with his granddaughter/daughter as a means of control. What an evil POS.
@@Santabruja444 that is still not the meaning of consensual.... she was a hostage, being horribly abused and coerced. She was possibly not resisting, she was possibly not putting up any kind of a fight anymore, maybe even pretending to consent by saying yes... but that is not consent.
Josef Fritzl actually said something along the lines of if you think what I've done is evil you should start looking in other basements. Sick people go out and function in society all the time and we have no clue. So deeply disturbing.
He was probably part of sone sick basement group in prison. No offence to the majority other “ normal” prisoners. Police probably should have investigated that statement.
I agree to a point. While I don’t think she knew about the dungeon bc the way it was structured. I do however believe she practically handed her dauhgter over to this monster and leaving her alone! And the siblings too horrible ppl as far as that’s concerned ‘
I absolutely hate the crafty ones 😔 it’s always a story that I end up thinking about while I’m doing smtn else one day. They stick in my mind forever 😓
Legit question…….how did she have that many kids and ZERO gyno care 😮 I’ve had 3 and needed varying # of stitches. How did she heal!? My gosh. She is incredibly strong
I'm sure she healed improperly. I'm sure there was scarring tissue where she needed real medical care. I agree, I think she is mentally strong because after so much time I think I would consider taken myself out. I mean what kind of life is that?
I nearly died with my childbirths. And that was with mass amounts of doctors and hospital staff and supplies at their disposal to save my life. I would have been buried in that basement.
She and the children absolutely deserve their privacy but I'd love to know that they are thriving and doing amazing, which I absolutely pray is the case.
American here; this story is so horrific that it transcends “regional interest”. I was old to read the daily news when it broke in 2008, and I doubt I’ll ever forget.
Thank you so much for covering this case. As someone from Austria this case is very known to me. The worst part nowadays is that he has a lawyer fighting for him to be released due to his old age. I am horrified and pray that he‘ll never be released. The austrian justice system is horrible and has nothing to with justice in my opinion. The fact that there‘s even a slight chance for him to be set free is just wrong.
This case is known here in Germany too. And it is horrific. He still has more freedom and more comfort in prison than his family. His old age should not be an excuse. But that is what they also did here with those who committed crimes in WW2 like their old age erases the suffering…. 24 years…. I actually don’t believe that no one knew. In small German and Austrian towns the neighborhood is always in your business. I can’t believe that they didn’t know. Especially that generation is always invested in the neighbors. I would believe them if they were a younger gen…. The mother and immediate neighbors and friends (especially the one that traveled with him) went off the hook easily. It is terrifying
i've actually heard this story before. But not with all the details, not with any of the picturess, and not with any of the follow ups on him in prison or the well being of the family. Thank you for being so thorough in your research before presenting it to us. it truly does make such a big difference.
As a mother myself the PANIC Elizabeth must have felt having her children ripped away from her moments after they’re born…? The screams she must have screamed for him to not take her babies. I can’t.
My name is Elizabeth.. and hearing it through out the story made me put myself in her shoes.. it's terrible . And I have children of my own, I could NOT imagine having my babies taken from me.. I fight for them ALL the time. Don't mess with the mama bear
The thought of my baby dying at like 3 days old is enough send send me to hysterics. My baby boy is almost 2 now. I can't imagine a moment without him.
@@molleirose I hadn’t gotten to that part when I made this comment and my jaw DROPPED. I needed to take a break and finished this video this morning. I was crying pick up our 16 month old and my mom was confused.
One thing that's cool about your research is, I've done a deep dive on a lot of the subjects you've covered, but somehow you always seem to find additional info that I haven't previously heard. Also I like that you don't sensationalize the stories or use dodgy articles as references in order to beef up the shock value. 10/10! The makeup is just a bonus.😄
I’ve known about this sad story for years, and was shocked when I first heard of it, but this is the most detail/background I’ve heard so far. Thank you for shedding more light on this sicko. He deserves to rot under the prison. I hope that somehow Elizabeth and her kids can heal enough to enjoy their lives. 💔
The mom was willingly naive to what was going on , it’s no way that the tenants heard the noise from the basement but she would see how much time was invested in the basement, she definitely heard the sounds and just never questioned anything … ugh … so sad smh
It’s such a shame that he is still alive, and also why is he allowed to see the sun whilst in prison?? That is such an injustice to Elizabeth and her kids, also the Mom needs to be in jail for her spinelessness
He is an absolute monster. I'm 100% sure the mom knew something. I don't care how afraid you are of your husband, when you know he's abusing your children and that way, you find your inner mama bear strength & you get them out of there. she stood by him after he was found guilty of assaulting a teenage girl that tells you all you need to know about her
Bailey is our investigative queen, cuz the amount of times I’ve heard this story without any of these details on this monsters back story is crazyyyyyyy. Love you queen
I've watched videos and read articles about this case but I can never fathom how someone can do that to their own daughter or a person in general. It still haunts me to this day. That man is beyond evil.
I think this is one of the most horrific and disturbing cases I've ever seen. Every time I see something about it, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. I can't even begin to imagine what Elizabeth and her children endured. I hope she's able to find some kind of peace in this world.
There is literally NO punishment to fit this crime. The damage to 7 innocent lives will live with them forever. Everyone in that house was controlled and abused by him. He’s the only one to blame for his actions. Pure Evil 😈
24 years. I just can’t fathom the layers of trauma & all of the different emotions Elizabeth/her children have had to work through. I hope they are able to find their much deserved peace and happiness & that they always have the support services that they need.
Where are all my Austrians? This case came to light when I was around 12 or 13. It deeply disturbed me. I also grew up only 2 hours away from the house he kept his daughter and her kids in. You did a great job, Bailey. I didn't know about the cases that could be linked to him. What a disturbing creature.
austrian here! i think i was about 11 when it all came out - even then it just stuck with me. the kampusch thing as well. just absolutely mind boggling when things like this happen so close to you.
I'm austrian. From Linz to be exact and I think it's just so weird to be this close to everything. Like I read about serialkillers from the US with a straight face and then there is this case where everything happened so close to my home. Once I even went on vacation to Mondsee. It's just a very strange feeling.
i’m happy to let everyone know that the entirety of the austria is ignoring his name change and refers to him by Fritzl, because no one is willing to erase people’s horrific memories of him
He’s still in one of y’all’s baby prisons with plush on the bars to stop them from hitting their heads too hard. Seems like he’s basically entered a cushy retirement.
@@oki__Having prisons designed for rehabilitation instead of purely punishment is not a bad thing. I know american minds can’t comprehend that, but it serves way more people (and the general population) than you people realize. Ofc it seems unjust for monsters like this guy, but people like this are the exception
What a heartbreaking story. The one positive part is that the community is protecting the family. I truly hope Elizabeth and her children are healing at their own pace and living a peaceful life.
It is honestly incomprehensible to think about what Elizabeth went through for 24 years in that cellar. I hope her and the children are able to find some sort of peace now, it is beyond disturbing to think about the memories they have to carry with them forever now 💔
Whats crazier is that he already finished his sentence ... hes a free man out here now SMH a monster able to roam the streets while his poor victims have to live wth the damage he did their whole live

When I first heard about this case, I thought it was a fictional story. Then I found out that it was a true story and I was totally shocked about how this could have happened. How he got away with it. It was like, WOW!!!
@@marybethcameron5624 Especially for 24 years. That's why I thought it was a fictional story. Then I started looking into the story and I found out it was true. It was just so shocking.
Never heard of this case until my sister found a movie called the girl in the basement on prime video one night an we couldn't make it through the movie cause of how rough the story line was so I looked up the story an then realized how crazy insane this case really is. I pray no one ever has to go through something like this ever ever again
I also saw that and i was horrified when i found out it was based on a true story. Absolutely insane! He was so evil and he is her dad and the grandpa all at the same time 🤯
I saw that movie and it was so emotionally draining when you know this story. I had to take an hour break from watching but thankfully I finished the movie. Idk how anyone could do this to their own kid.
As always, great story telling. I keep forgetting that this story didn't happen 50-100 years ago. the fact that this monster is still alive kills me. And thank you for doing goth justice. As a former goth-adjacent teen, some of the looks that people want to call goth are far from what we/they actually looked like. You killed it.
The mom 100% knew, come on. She must have been obviously conditioned by fear to not pay attention, but she 100% knew. I remember when this came on the news, my mom was like there's no way you don't know what's going on in your home, specially of you're a 'homemaker', and yeah, I don't believe for a minute she didn't know
I’m glad to know that she has a community rallying behind her/protecting her & and her family. And I’m happy that she was able to regain some semblance of her life back and found love. I would be so distrustful of men after going through something like that. Just shows her strength to trust again and try to heal. Maybe there is some comfort since he works in security as well.
I‘m from Linz in Austria and when this case came up everyone was in disbelief. Even tho i was familiar with nearly all the details about this case, i still watched the whole video. Gotta love Bailey‘s storytelling!

My storytelling is nowhere near as captivating as yours but I'm learning so much from you. My channel may not succeed but you've absolutely changed my mindset for the better. Thank you for being you Bailey!
Wait, I actually just recently discovered and subscribed to your channel! It's awesome and I hope more people flock to it - I love how you don't overdramatise the stories like some others do; it's respectful and honestly really relaxing to listen to :)
Thank you for covering this case! It has been haunting me since childhood. It is such a bizarre and truly disturbing insight into the evilness a human mind can do. I think what baffles me the most, is that we can never really understand how a human being would even think to do something like this to their OWN CHILD! This case has been so big in the German speaking media for years. I am glad it is finally talked about more in the international true crime community as well.
This poor family. My heart breaks for Elizabeth and her babies . I’m so happy to hear that they have a support system in their community. I wish love and healing to them.
Given his hair, when Bailey called him "Bozo" I LOST it. 😂😂😂 Also, anyone else wonder if he ate the dirt he removed? He seems like the type to eat dirt. 🤔
I have heard this story many times. But you made the people seem more real. Like they were actually human beings. I normally hear this read like a manuscript, you gave it emotion . Thank you.
This case and the Junko furuta case are the worst things I have ever heard, I hope Bailey does an episode on her too. Poor Elizabeth deserves nothing but peace for the rest of her days
I can not imagine the therapy those kids and Elizabeth must have needed to get over that kind of trauma. How do therapists even know what to do or what to say to people who have been isolated and abused all of their life?
It was a blessing her daughter got sick and needed medical attention. Imagine if something happened to him when they were down there! Like a car accident or something, and no one knew they were down there! Oh gosh. How awful. I hope they are happy and healthy now and I hope he lives a long miserable life in prison. Love your videos Bailey!
I‘m from Austria. After the Natascha Kampusch case had attracted worldwide attention this one was even more disturbing. Austria is just a little country with about 7 million citizens. And all of a sudden there were 2 subsequent cases of these dark human abysses😭🥵
When I heard about this story and the other one in the U.S. , Ariel Castro kidnappings. How these poor girls/woman were trapped in these spaces while the outside world kept moving and living everyday life. Tragic and horrific. Also Bailey, please cover the David Marmolejo case in El Paso Tx. It is WILD
I think his wife knew a lot more than anybody found out. Women are pretty intuitive and so I feel like after a bunch of babies just started showing up on the doorstep that were apparently their daughters that she sent to them. I’m sure she was suspicious and so I’m sure, she had an idea that something was going on like maybe she didn’t exactly know what was going on, but I’m sure she knew something was up, but she was obviously being abused by him too, so she was too afraid to say anything or do anything
Kinda reminds me of the Wolfpack brothers. The dad kept the family locked away in a tiny NYC apartment for 14 years. If I remember correctly he wouldn’t allow them to go into certain rooms because the neighbors would hear them. Eventually they got out and people found out they’d been locked up for nearly their whole lives.
The documentary was amazing. Those kids came out surprisingly well adjusted and are talented as well. I'm sure they have had their own struggles, but if anyone deserves a medal honor, they do😢🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Bro. I’ve heard this case a thousand times and almost didn’t click on this episode because of that…. But I’m glad I did, because I did NOT know any of Josef’s background!! What?! This guy should have been put away for life long before he did what this case is for… Wild!! Thanks Bailey for putting in his background!
Reminds me of the movie “Room” on Netflix where the girl is locked up and has a baby and raises it in a room and the child thinks that the whole world is just their room cause he’s never seen the real world. Great movie
I feel heard. Thank you for covering this story. It’s so insane! I feel for her and her children. I’m just glad her country protected her so well that there’s not many if any pics of her and her kids after this

That man should rot in prision forever. His daughter had a longer prision sentence than him. Disgusting.
It is horrifying! It stuck with me too.
To all the mothers, if your child is being abused by your man, no matter how small scale, you need to get active to stop that right now.

Or leave the man, hope that’s what you mean lol
Usually women are scared or sometimes these abusers are so sneaky
If I ever found out my husband was SAing any of our children, I don't think he would make it out alive. I can't even fathom the rage I would feel.

It is INSANE he got a lesser sentence than the one he gave to his victims.
i've actually heard this story before. But not with all the details, not with any of the picturess, and not with any of the follow ups on him in prison or the well being of the family. Thank you for being so thorough in your research before presenting it to us. it truly does make such a big difference.

The 6 foot high ceilings alone give me chills. The claustrophobia must've been terrible.
The mom was willingly naive to what was going on , it’s no way that the tenants heard the noise from the basement but she would see how much time was invested in the basement, she definitely heard the sounds and just never questioned anything … ugh … so sad smh
Also that the sounds started right when her daughter “went missing.” She definitely knew.
It’s such a shame that he is still alive, and also why is he allowed to see the sun whilst in prison?? That is such an injustice to Elizabeth and her kids, also the Mom needs to be in jail for her spinelessness
