You could hardly tell what anything was because of all the mold. As soon as I got a whif of that smell I went back to get a mask, but my friend didn't care and he ended up getting extremely sick since we spent about 2 hours exploring up there.

    I work for Master Tech, we have a 12 step process that we do to get rid of mold. For one, instead of using dry ice (which I never heard of using) we hepa vacuum the wood and brush off any remaining mold spores, spray the wood with Serum which is basically hydrogen peroxide to the tenth power. It burns your skin if it comes into contact with your skin and will literally bleach your skin, it burns your eyes, and it burns to inhale it. However we wear our PPE so we don't have to worry about that. After we spray it with Serum, we hepa vacuum the wood again, and then we encapsulate the wood.

      Bert Cochran I guess there might be some range of pressure that will do. But not your default 8 bar workshop compressor. It shouldn't be too high to prevent cutting the wood, and not too low to achieve nothing. But adding something solid like dry ice will help a bunch.

  • @willythewave
    @willythewave 9 лет назад +15

    Using dry ice looks expensive. And I wouldn`t count on it not coming back. I have grown mushrooms before and the spores are microscopic. Just because you get rid of what you see means nothing. I also worked in the asbestos abatement services and I can tell you that one of those negative air filters cost $50,000 in the late 80`s. Granted it`s nothing more than a fan with some HEPA filters but that`s what they cost when I was using them. That reflects how much the services will cost you. Abatement services are for rich people or a government money wasting grant. You could tear your roof off and replace it cheaper.

    • @keithupton86ku
      @keithupton86ku 5 лет назад +1

      That is what insurance is for. Everything you mentioned is a fraction of the price now. You can buy an industrial, professional quality air scrubber (pretty much giant fan with HEPA filter) for around ~$2,500. Or you can rent something similar for maybe a couple hundred bucks. As far abatement of mold, a strong (high concentrate) peroxide will kill most.

    • @HoomerbirdG2
      @HoomerbirdG2 5 лет назад +3

      Or get good homeowners insurance and pay your 1000 dollar deductible....they'll send in a cat team to stabilize probably drop a dehu and set up containment then get appovals from the insurance to remove affected materials ie drywall and insulation then shockwave the piss out of the materials and wipe studs. Really not expensive at all. I know what I'm doing tho so if my house had grey/black water or microbial growth I'm not calling a cat team I'm documenting and demoing affected materials right away I dont care if they drop the claim.

      @@HoomerbirdG2 Same here. I currently work for a water and fire restoration company. If I had something like that going on in my house, then I'd get a couple estimates for the insurance company, then do everything myself and take whatever check insurance wants to cut. • @aaronmfarland

    • @willythewave
      @willythewave 2 года назад

      @@aaronmfarland Back in the late 80`s during the asbestos scare when the government first began to regulate things no insurance company was going to cover any of that. Those were all new rules and regulations. Wanta know the funny part? We replaced all old asbestos products with new fire retardent materials that clearly said they were cancer causing agents as well. I know because I used to sit on fork lift loads of the stuff and read the labels while I was having lunch while removing the old stuff. As far as finding a giant fan with HEPA filters I guess you could`nt give them away today but 40 years ago they were indeed $50,000 each. The whole thing was a scam just like changing Air Conditioning coolants from R12 to R134 in the name of the ozone. The rules are regulated by which ever company lobbys congress with the most money to change the rules so they can use their products. That`s how it works. Period!
      Lobby congress, line their pockets, create a scare and change the rules then use YOUR products. That`s how it works. Anybody that don`t understand that are willingly blind to how government regulations work.

    Loved the explanation, and it seems pretty easy, but don’t you think attic cleaning could be dangerous for a zero-experienced person? I would go to a company named Pure Eco Inc. every time for attic cleaning services in Simi Valley! Anybody looking for services in California can contact them!

    Get up there with a mask, scrup all surfaces with a stiff brush and detergent and wipe clean with water to remove residues. Wipe everything down with a bleach solution to kill everything. vacuum/mop debris and coat with an anti mold coating. Have a dehumidifier running before during and after process. This over complicated extraction process with dry ice is a money grab. 😂

    Unfortunately this method does nothing for the rest of the house. Mold is not just where you can see it, mold is an airborn molecule and if you have mold in the attic you have mold spores in the HVAC ducts, the walls, the drains, the carpet, the furniture etc., especially in a house this old. The only way to be sure the mold problem is solved is to have a Pure Maintenance licensee come and use their patented dry vapor non-toxic whole house process to be sure the mold problem is really solved. Unfortunately traditional remediators can only address what they can see which is effectively "spot cleaning" a much bigger problem. I love This Old House, but they really need to invite a Pure Maintenance licensee on their show to solve the mold problem once and for all.

    If they're trying to get rid of the existing mold, they shouldn't be pressure washing the walls, they should be scanning the air for the hot spores.

    Bull sheet....attic mold is a huge scam. You breathe in more mold sitting in a yard with mulch than you could in 10 years sitting in an attic.

    One could buy 50lbs of soda or some organic abrasive media (corn cob, walnut, etc.), a media blaster and a decent air compressor (all of those from from Harbor Freight: 1 time use, cheap tools fine), rent a HEPA air scrubber and a HEPA vac (or just leave a shop vac outside and run a long hose) and do this themselves in a few hours for a under $500 IF you have to buy all the above. If you already own a good air compressor then just a few hundred bucks.
    OR you could pay someone like this to do it for $5000-10000. This isn't rocket science.

    what do you do if the attic roof is so low that only an anorexic person could fit through to crawl on top of the studs???? literally a 2.5 ft triangle to crawl through !

    • @Mr.WS6
      @Mr.WS6 6 лет назад

      John Smith you cut your triangle out and make a bigger hole but first you build the new brace. Then cut out the old. Then climb on in. My issue is red wasp all in my attic. They crawl in eve's of the house then nest up in my attic. I need a sting proof bee suit lol.
