Whorf never took linguistic determinism seriously; he used it as a straw person argument to set the scene for linguistic relativity. Quite a few credible linguistic anthropologists study linguistic relativity to this day with fascinating results. The work on spatial language by Eve Danziger, Steve Levinson, and others at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is perhaps the cream of the crop. The rotation paradigm experiment is especially worth checking out for its evidence of linguistic influence on non-linguistic cognition and might provide fodder for conlanging and world building.
