The protagonist was an absolute unit to return to the tower and finish his service. BAD ASS
Every year, I take a group of unsuspecting 7th Graders, put lighthouse ambience on the screen and a curated list of creepy songs in the background, turn off the lights, and listen to this audio while they read along. Makes for quite a memorable class period! Thanks for such a great rendition of this story.
That sounds fantastic -- can you invite me next time? Ha.
We read this in middle school.... and I've NEVER forgotten this terrifying little tale.
i can here trying to get answers for my question i have to answers on the book after reading it lol ( i am in midsole school )
am
@@mae5954 oh my same
Your teacher was awesome
Same! Must have been 25 years ago now. Ian's narration really does the story justice.
8:17 "The three of us focused our glasses on her poop". I know what he meant, but I still had a hearty (if childish) laugh about that. 😆
If I said the word didn't tickle me when I read it aloud, I'd be lying.
Hahahaha That’s EXACTLY what I was about to comment. Because of my maturity.
i really like this story - maybe because it’s not sensationalized and the main character gets through it so well. :). whenever i listen to stories about boats and the deck is only being called the poop instead the poop deck. well, to be totally yucky, i always see sailors sitting on the railings. they’re totally clothed in pirate clothes and it only lasts a second. Would calling it the poo deck be better? probably not. LOL.
@@feralbluee lol😁
At the start of the story I was thinking how cool a job a lighthouse keeper would be. Now am not so sure!! Great listen!

Well that's it...I'm buying pythons...big ones...the rats keep eating my likes on these videos. Ian😄 Go to FL and adopt some Burmese Pythons😄 ya know in LA we got dem nutria...that'll take some 220 Conobear traps😄😄😈😈
I just got an ad for Cabbage Patch Kids. I think RUclips is confused as to where it is.
Brilliant.
First time hearing this and it's going to be a long time before I forget it!
Thank you.
My dad had an old collection of old timey radio shows on vinyl. I heard this with Vincent Price as narrator.
Great reading. We listen in my 7th grade ELA class every year before Halloween, noting suspense and foreshadowing.
Fabulous!
It's years since I heard this story and what a horror story it is! Thanx, Ian. : )
Wow, I just listened to this tale earlier this week. It was an episode of _Suspense_ (an old radio show). I first heard it in the early 90's when my dad played it for me. As always you did a great narration, but nobody could do it like Vincent Price!
A legend!
You my friend just helped me pass my English homework 🙏🏻
how?????????????????????
Enjoyed the story . Very well told . thank you 👍
I adore this story. First Heard this on escape radio program with vincent price (I'm not that old I just love all things retro like the old radio dramas) very cool
If memory serves the old radio show escape did an episode on this story. I really liked this one. Thanks again Ian for a masterful rendition
I loved this wonderful story! I have never heard it before , and so with my huge delight & your beautiful reading I was totally gripped & immersed from beginning to end .
However, I felt rather differently about the tale to everyone else here in the comments it seems, with my sympathy aroused and being kept for the poor Rats! Starved and demented yet they fought , tenaciously and literally clinging on for life...and I thought they were rather cruelly tricked at the end! Poor creatures.
Seriously its a fabulous old adventure story, great stuff! Thank you.
Great narration!!
Love your voice😊
That was great!
I love the radio drama from the early 50's with Vincent Price, if anyone hasn't heard it yet I strongly recommend.
This story wasn't what I expected it to be about but was even better. Reminded me of the level "Floodgate" from Halo 3 what with the ship completely writhing with rats crashing into the island and the sharks sort of "joining" the fight against the rats.
Good story and narration!
I would be terrified of ever setting foot in a lighthouse again unless I had a flammenwerfer and 200 cats.
Thanks!
Such a terrifying tale.
I enjoyed this one a lot , it made me think that you should do a "Horror at Sea" series one day. Thank you very much!!
A superb idea, Jamie!
That sounds like an awesome idea, there has to be a couple of good ghost ship stories out there.
@@HorrorBabble bad
Sike it was really good
Your idea is now history. We'll done
Ohh I know this one! I listened to the version that was adapted into a Radio play with Vincent Price.
the scariest thing about this is that it's really close to reality.
Great stuff as usual, guys. Love the narration for all your vids- so many narrators of horror/suspense try to project fear in their voice to somehow effect the audience, but it rarely, if ever pays off. The cool and articulate narration really helps me immerse myself in the stories, especially your work with Lovecraft. Keep it up!
Thanks Bryan! Much appreciated. Ian
This is a priceless piece. Thank you, the story was something riveting. 🙏🏽🎩🌹🖤❤️
Thanks John - I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
Banger!
Dude this story was amazing! I had to read this book for school and now I'm ready for my quiz! You did an amazing job at telling the story!
Wonderful as usual Sir!
I was eating while listening to this one... it was hard to finish my cereals while hearing the description on those filthy rats...
Ha!
I know right?? Not a medium rare rib eye story....hey honey...let's have a good salad instead huh😄😄😄
Very much enjoyed this unusual story. Thanks.
Truly creepy !!!
Well done Ian !
No matter how old I still haven't found anything I don't like here. Great story.
I've never disliked rats before this story. But now I find myself checking in all the corners. That was truly frightening.Excellently read.Thank you.
john oliva but there land rats
What a great, eerie tale!🐁🔥👏
This is one of my favorite stories.
good one - you made it more fun than scary, although in reality, i can’t imagine something like that being really real.
thanks much. :} 🐈🐾🌻
I remembered reading this in middle school literature book all the time I love it
Great one, love lighthouse stories
Having just finished off James Herbert’s The Rats, it’s interesting to see the same idea in a different context.
One has to wonder about “influence” though...
just stumbled upon this channel, I like it now
I use this audio with my students every semester.
Thank you, Heather! Great to hear.
what a great story :) fab reading as ever Ian !!
The rats though ! Them some Scary creatures , eh !!!
Its almost 1 am and I wasn't understand this story that my English teacher told me to read. I kept reading it over and over but for some reason I didn't get it. You're video helped me so much now I don't have to worry about failing!
this has always been such a strikingly claustrophobic story, but damn if it doesn't make the life of a lighthouse keeper sounds like bliss. terrible shame the trade has been whittled away by modernization. i think i'd give a good deal to mind a light with a library and look out over the beautiful bleakness of the cold sea each day.
Well done, Ian.
Cant help but wish they had flamethrowers when the rats attack them.
So close to October and begin by revisiting a favorite tale of mine from my middle school days.
One scary tale a day to Halloween!
Excellent
i forgot to read the book and i suck at reading. you made it so easy to understnad the story thank you so much
You just helped me pass English🙏🙏
Well done!
I adore the stories like this one. You should consider making a horrible rats playlist 😂
Eyes down for another eyes closed cinema visit 😀
Exactly...who needs to pay $30 to go to a theatre...we have Ian and Jennifer.😄
This was awesome. I love lighthouse stories. A horror at sea series would be amazing :)

@@HorrorBabble thank you! This is fantastic
One of my favorites.
Great tale. Another little man v nature epic I'd recommend is 'Leningen versus the ants'.
I read this in middle school(a few days ago. I'm not at all done with Middle School yet) and I felt nothing listening to this. The only thing I felt while listening to this story was sadness and shock at the part where the rats ate the dogs. I do love this though. I'm finishing my assignment which involves this story.
thank you! listening to you was a lot better then listening a computer read the story
Thanks, reading this for school and I’m a slow reader, this would have taken me 1-2 hours to read lol
Now there was a rat saved a sinking ship, his name was Roland.Roll VT Errol.
Really good
This story can be made into a movie
I've haven't heard this in years 😳
great story and wonderful reading. :)
i’ll still think about rats as those cute ones people have for pets. 🐀
The way he said "poop!" was funnier >O
This was also adapted into a radio program in the 50s old time radio has it the radio program ended with everyone but the narrator getting eaten and they never made contact with the outside world and a banana boat came to investigate the light being out all the rats got on it and left
this story is so freaking creepy
Giant sea rats that take over ships? I don’t know that’s pretty far fetched… and even then, why wouldn’t they just eat each other if starving
very good
Here for home work ✌️😗
Someone help me with my with on this ffs lol
What a horrifying read😖😭.....those rats were scary
it was a good story
I read it in a book
So visual this tale is. I can imagine it all, horrible. I heard it twice now!
Ugh! I had rats get in my basement when a sewer pipe cracked. They got into the walls and attic before I realized they were there. It was awful! Thank goodness for modern pest control!
Anyone get this for a school assignment and didn't want to read it themselves? Me!
I’m starting to think the narrator was the crazy one like who goes back to a place like that and when it’s time to leave almost cry I think that he was the actual crazy one but said LeGleo was crazy. Like there is no way he’s in his right mind WHO WOULD LIKE THAT PLACE
Mr.Drydale sent me here 304 Whitney Breeze
I just read this for school (middle school) and I love this story I just don’t know if it’s true or not some people say it is but I think it isn’t 😂
CREEPY! 😄
👍
Who else is here for school
Rat stories, Stephen King's favorite type. How do you find them?
This one had been recommended a while ago - works well as part of this series.
